Product Description
A stunning new edition of the first book to cover the increasingly popular subject of Pratt Ware. It is the only book which recounts what is known of the Pratt family of Fenton near Stoke-on-Trent and explains how this distinctive pottery came to be associated with their name. This type of ware was also made, however, by many other potters, not only in Staffordshire but also in Yorkshire, Liverpool, Sunderland, Tyneside, Devonshire and on the East and West coasts of Scotland. The wide range of products is comprehensively discussed and each piece is traced to its manufacturer. The latest findings on the subject are presented here - including the details of a new maker who came to light during research for the book. New colour illustrations have been introduced thoughout to replace many of those which were previously in black and white. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Updating of the Standard Reference
First, a disclaimer: I know Griselda Lewis and am very fond of her. I also was fond of her husband, John, who passed away several years ago. Some may not know that this was the same John Lewis responsible for extraordinary books on printed ephemera, graphic design, and sailing. In the case of Pratt Ware, this was the first book on the subject of British relief-molded earthenware painted with the colors available at the time that would withstand the heat of the kiln. The original version (1984) was later reprinted with minor changes to meet demand. This new version, in a smaller page size but still hardbound and well-printed, not only brings information up to date but adds a good many color images, in most cases the same objects that originally appeared in halftone. For this subject, where color is one of the critical components of the characteristics of the subject, it makes for a huge improvement on the original. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a revised and enlarged edition of this extensively-researched book. "Pratt Ware" takes its name from a family firm of potters who worked in Staffordshire in the 18th and 19th centuries. This type of ware was also made, however, by many other potters, not only in Staffordshire but also in Yorkshire, Liverpool, Sunderland, Tyneside, Devonshire and on the East and West coasts of Scotland. The authors trace Pratt Ware to these various manufacturers and discuss the wide range of pieces which were produced. This book, now with the benefits of all the latest findings on the subject, an additional 16 pages and full colour throughout, is a study by authors with over 50 years' experience of collecting Pratt Ware. The numerous black and white and colour photographs, many of rare and unfamiliar objects, have nearly all been taken especially for this book from Museums and Private Collections around the world. In many cases the designs on the jugs and mugs are shown alongside the engravings, paintings or jasper ware cameos on which they were based. ... Read more

Each chapter builds to provide a complete picture of long-term care and understanding how all the parts fit together to make a whole system. This book is strongest is in its discussion of funding structures and how funding impacts service delivery. The strongest chapters were on quality and the various ways that quality is currently measured.Pratt points out that measuring process and systems as is currently and most commonly done does not always guarantee quality outcomes.

Chapter 2 which discusses the "ideal" long-term care health system and Appendix A: Criteria for Designing or Evaluating a Long-Term Care System are worth the price of this book because the information contained in these pages can assist long-term care administrators strengthen their facilities and service delivery and policy makers in understanding the complexities of long-term care systems.

"I wonder how long it will be before someone misses me, and I try to remember if I have any appointments this week.I don't think so.Then I wonder if Teresa or my landlady would sense something wrong if I didn't answer the telephone.I doubt that, too. Then I begin to hope that perhaps Quick has really "put someone on me," and I remember telling Casey that Quick saw all.But I know that no one really does, except perhaps God, so I pray a little.I imagine myself as the condemned man with his life flashing, but I do not know what I have been condemned for - or by whom."While scenes of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq dominate today's news, this elegant novel provides an insight into an earlier attempt by America to install a democracy in a formerly totalitarian state that is undergoing a revolution. Sectarian violence, language problems, CIA and State Department goofs all contribute to the occasionally lovely but ultimately sad experiences of a well-meaning American professor who becomes intimately and tragically involved with a lovely woman and the deteriorating political scene."John Clark Pratt wrote one of the truly great Vietnam War novels, The Laotian Fragments, and now he has written a comparably great novel that resonates strongly into our present unsettled times. American Affairs isworldly wise and richly moody and absolutely compelling reading. Pratt is a worthy descendant of Graham Greene."--ROBERT OLEN BUTLER, novelist and Pulitzer Prizewinner."American Affairs is superb. It is a timeless tale of love and upheaval with tragic results. Having been an American Foreign Service Officer in Portugal, I can attest that John Pratt's graceful novel of the last ColdWar struggle captures a poignant vignette of this century." --CRESCENCIO ARCOS, former US Ambassador and Regional Vice-President of International Affairs to South America. ... Product Description
In "Chaucer and War," John Pratt studies Chaucer's attitude toward the warfare of his age and how his major poetry reflects this attitude. Using biographical information, reliable fourteenth-century sources, and Chaucer's own writings, Pratt explores Chaucer's use of war through such works as the "Knight's Tale," the "Squire's Tale," and "Troilus and Criseyde." Pratt gives an overview of the military picture during Chaucer's time, examines Chaucer's knowledge of military weapons and his use of this knowledge in his poetry, and evaluates the poetry based on references, word usage, and historical context among others. Pratt concludes that Chaucer, despite his English-Christian perspective, was a writer who knew a good deal about warfare on a global scale, and supported warfare when he felt the cause was just. A strikingly unique perspective from the current evaluations of Chaucer's work, "Chaucer and War" will be of value to students and scholars of Chaucer and medieval history and literature, as well as those with an interest in the Middle Ages. ... Product Description

Expertly drawing on international examples and existing literature, Penal Populism closes a gap in the field of criminology. In this fascinating expose of current crime policy John Pratt examines the role played by penal populism on trends in contemporary penal policy.

Penal populism is associated with the public's decline of deference to the criminal justice establishment amidst alarm that crime is out of control. Pratt argues that new media technology is helping to spread national insecurities and politicians are not only encouraging such sentiments but are also being led on by them. Pratt explains it is having most influence in the development of policy on sex offenders, youth crime, persistent criminals and anti-social behaviour.

This topical resource also covers new dimensions of the phenomenon, including:

  • the changing nature and structure of the mass media
  • less reliance on the more orthodox expertise of civil servants and academics
  • limitations to the impact of populism, bureaucratic resistance from judges, lawyers and academics and the restorative justice movement.

This is essential reading for students, researchers and professionals working in criminology and crime policy.
