Product Description
This book is concerned to analyse the production of criminological knowledge, with particular reference to one of the most important institutions in the western world involved in thisthe official inquiry. The core focus of this book is thus to investigate the structures and processes of official discourse, and the ways in which this produces knowledge on crime and justicea much neglected topic in comparison to the attention that has been played to the role of the media in this process. The mechanisms that produce official discourse vary according to different jurisdiction, but some clear themes nevertheless emerge. ... Read more

Product Description

Arranged chronologically and in counterpoint, this unique book samples all conceivable forms of oral and written documentation to illuminate the United States' involvement in its longest and most divisive war. The attitudes and experiences of foot soldiers and generals, hawks and doves, politicians and protesters, writers, spies, and pilots are graphically revealed in news releases, excerpts from fiction, poems, graffiti, speeches, intelligence reports, personal diaries, songs, official memos, and more. All viewpoints are included: American, French, British, Cambodian, Thai, Lao, and South and North Vietnamese.

John Clark Pratt--teacher, writer, and veteran of the Southeast Asian conflict--has compiled this book so that any reader can comprehend the Vietnam War and perhaps for the first time move from prejudice and confusion to acceptance and understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Compilation--Should Be Expanded To 10 Volumes
I bought this when it first came out, but continue to use it as a reference book. What is most irritating is that this book is out of print, while the cheap knock-offs keep rolling!!

Pratt has compiled a cross section of everything, from literature to music to poetry, to help explain the Vietnam War from start to finish. As the subtitle explains, this is from 1941-1982, so you get the French view as well as American, North and South Vietnamese mixed in. If you look on page 187 you will also even see a Swedish poem by Goran Sonnevi based on what he saw on television! This is why I say this should have been 10 volumes. And, like, why is poet Bruce Weigl missing?

What is interesting is how Pratt also chose to compile this volume. By that, I mean that authors writing in 1979 on what they saw in 1965 are interspersed with what was reported that year. His Prologue is 1941-May 1955, with an Epilogue for 1975-1982. Each "Act" starts with a page of GI graffiti, such as "As I slide down the banister of life I'll always remember Veitnam as a splinter in my ass." Believe me, I saw this and much better by 1971. Sometimes, you just had to be there to understand the humor and what it was all about.

What is also important is that Pratt also included the casualties for each year. Curious about how my year stacked up with the current situation in Iraq, I noticed we had about 156,000 troops in Vietnam in Vietnam which suffered 1,381 killed and 8,936 wounded. Seems to be getting close by that calculation. I also liked the inclusion of the Christmas song at the end of the 1971 section. We actually sang that in Christmas 1971. The refrain "Take your Merry Christmas cheer and shove it up your ass" got louder each time. We supplied the free fireworks for that and New Year's. Sure beats waving sparklers.

Like I say, my only complaint is that this was never seen as the definitive compilation for Vietnam. What I would like to see would be a much more ambitious project along these same lines. ... Read more

Product Description
The theory of rotating hydraulics is important in the study of certain types of swift oceanic and atmospheric flows. Applications include overflows in deep ocean passages such as the Faroe-Bank Channel, shallow exchange flows gaps such as the Strait of Gibraltar, and atmospheric flows such as in the California amarine layer and jet stream. Despite a 30-year history of development the subject is not covered in any of the standard graduate textbooks on geophysical fluid dynamics. This book thoroughly covers the development of the theory of rotating hydraulics, making frequent use of supporting laboratory models and observational data. The need to understand rotating hydraulic phenomena is growing as the general interest in climate and global circulation is continuously increasing. The book includes numerous exercises, making it a perfect textbook for graduate students in oceanography and meteorology. In addition, it identifies cutting-edge research and is of interest to more advanced researchers who seek specialized reference as well as engineering graduate studetns learning about hydraulics in general. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not the last word but a great start...
This book has some ambitious aims. One is to provide an introduction to research methods which is both practical and rigorous, equally relevant to policy research and high theory, and to ad hoc "on the job" data collecting and highly sophisticated research programs. Another is to bring together people with very different assumptions and methods to find how much they can communicate with each other when given the opportunity in a structured but non-confrontational setting.

The editors are admirers of Karl Popper and they use his ideas to frame the organisation of the book, however it is not necessary to accept any of his more controversial ideas to extract value from resulting discussion.

Part I is a short chapter by the editors explaining why they think the book makes a useful contribution. They aim to correct the most common kind of teaching about research methods which tends to promote an impression of competing or mutually exclusive methods, quantitative versus qualitative, for example, reflecting a positivist/scientist versus a non-science or humanistic approach.

"In addition, many texts ignore the messy aspects of doing research - the muddling through, and the constraints of time and limited resources. One consequence is that people who undertake various kinds of small-scale investigation of activities...may not think of themselves as researchers, because what they do does not measure up to the canons presented in much of the literature".

This speaks to the situation of people in practical or service delivery situations where there are neither time nor resources for "proper" research. An example of this is the place where I work at present where there is a concern about a minor epidemic of abuse of a particular kind ofdrug and people want to exchange ideas on the most effective interventions. Obviously, well designed RCT (randomised controlled trials) would take years to design and implement, even after funds are found. The need here is to devise simple protocols that can be used bybusy service-providers to record strategic items of information which can be collated to inform everyone who is working with this particular group.

Part II contains several chapters spelling out the rationale for some very different research traditions: the Popperian approach, the postmodern prism, policy-oriented research, the critical (Frankfurt School) approach, research in the context of an alternative culture (New Zealand maori) and the "case study" approach.

To demystify the practices of research the contributors were asked to structure their presentations in a consistent manner: to explain why they do research, what they do, the rationale for the particular assumptions and methods that they use, and what kinds of outcomes they hope to see as a result of their research. A fair amount of esoteric jargon is deployed in some of these chapters and the editors have provided a glossary of technical terms at the end of the book to help people who may otherwise be
intimidated.

Part III contains the edited transcripts of dialogue between one or other of the editors and each of the other contributors. These are not as dramatic as one might expectfrom the polemics that one reads in the literature where protagonists tear strips off other schools of thought. The editors may have been too conciliatory but still there are some passages ofstrong but polite disagreement.

Part IV is a wrap-up by the editors, summarising some principles of good research gleaned from the creative confrontation of their approach with the others. They sum up theirprinciples in an acronym PRICE.
Purpose.
Rigour.
Imagination.
Care for others.
Economy.

To conclude this brief notice, the book provides a very good presentation of alternative methods and programs. The protagonists get to strut their stuff in their own language and then they have to explain themselves to a Popperian interlocutor. It is hard for me to see this through the eyes of the naive beginners who are the intended audience, I think it works, but they will have the last word.
