Excerpt: Saints Cyril and Methodius (Greek: , Old Church Slavonic: ) were two Greek brothers born in Thessaloniki in the 9th century. They became missionaries of Christianity among the Slavic peoples of Great Moravia and Pannonia. Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title "Apostles to the Slavs". They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe the Old Church Slavonic language. After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as saints with the title of "Equals to the Apostles". In 1880, Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them co-patrons of Europe, together with Saint Benedict of Nursia. The two brothers were born in Thessaloniki - Cyril in 827-828 and Methodius in 815-820. Cyril was reputedly the youngest of seven brothers, according to the "Vita Cyrilli" ("The Life of Cyril"). Their father was Leo, a droungarios of the Byzantine theme of Thessaloniki, and their mother was Maria, who may have been a Slav. The two brothers lost their father when Cyril was only fourteen, and the powerful minister Theoktistos became their protector. Theoktistos was at the time logothetes tou dromou, one of the chief ministers of the Empire. He was also responsible, along with the regent Bardas, for initiating a far-reaching educational program within the Empire which culminated in the establishment of the University of Magnaura, where Cyril was to teach. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=29161 ... This sect lived in the vicinity of the main center of the Caliphate until 1258, when the Mongols destroyed their last shrine. During Muslim rule, they were a protected minority, and around the time of al-Mutawakkil's reign their town became a center for philosophical, esoteric, and medical learning. They may have been joined by the descendants of pagan Greek scholars who, not tolerated in the Byzantine Empire, settled in lands that became part of the Abbasid caliphate. After 750 AD, some Muslim rulers and scholars became interested in Greek culture and science, collecting and having translated many ancient Greek works in the fields of philosophy and mathematics. Although they later became Arabic speakers, in pre-Islamic times, it was common for Sabians to speak Greek. Thabit and his pupils lived in the midst of the most intellectually vibrant, and probably the largest, city of the time, Baghdad. He occupied himself with mathematics, astronomy, astrology, magic, mechanics, medicine, and philosophy. His native language was Syriac, which was the eastern Aramaic dialect from Edessa, and he knew Greek well too. He translated from Greek Apollonius, Archimedes, Euclid and Ptolemy. Thabit had revised the translation of Euclid's Elements of Hunayn ibn Ishaq. He also rewrote Hunayn's translation of Pto...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Hunayn ibn Ishaq (also Hunain or Hunein) (Syriac: , Arabic: , ; known in Latin as Johannitius) (809-873) was a famous and influential Assyrian Nestorian scholar, physician, and scientist, known for his work in translating scientific and medical works in Greek into Arabic and Syriac during the glory years of the Abbasid Caliphate. unayn ibn Isaq was the most productive translator of Greek medical and scientific treatises. He was originally from southern Iraq but he spent his working life in Baghdad, the center of the great ninth-century Greek-into-Arabic/Syriac translation movement. Impressively, Hunayn's translations did not require corrections at all. This perfection possibly came about because he mastered four languages: Arabic, Syriac, Greek and Persian. He studied Greek and became known among the Arabs as the "Sheikh of the translators." Hunayns method was widely followed by later translators. In the Abbasid era, a new interest has arisen in extending the studies of Greek science in the Middle East. At that time, there was a vast amount of information in Greek language pertaining to philosophy, mathematics, natural science, and medicine. However, this valuable information was at that time accessible only to a very small minority of Middle Eastern scholars who knew the Greek language. Therefore, a need for an organized translation move was imminent. Within time, Hunayn ibn Ishaq became arguably known as the chief translator of that era, beside laying out the foundations of Islamic medicine. In either case, both sects have a great interest in astronomy, astrology, and mathematics (especially in the case of Mandaeans). Thabit and his pupils lived in the midst of the most intellectually vibrant, and probably the largest, city of the time, Baghd...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=207547 ...

In his lifetime, Ishaq translated 116 writings, a few of which were Platos Timaeus, Aristotles Metaphysics, and the Old Testament, into Syriac and Arabic. Additionally, Ishaq produced 36 of his own books, in which 21 covered the fields... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1101492 ... Read more

Read more
