Almost nothing is known about Ries' childhood, youth and education. It is not even possible to determine the year of his birth with certainty. The caption on the only known contemporary portrait of the mathematician reads: ANNO 1550 ADAM RIES SEINS ALTERS IM LVIII. Therefore he was in his 58th year of age at the time of the picture, which was made in 1550. From this it can be concluded that he was born in 1492, although if he did not turn 58 till the end of 1550, he could also have been born in 1493. The location of his birth, Staffelstein, can be determined with certainty, since he gives information about himself in the preface to his book, "Coß". His father was the owner of the mill there, Contz Ries, and his mother, Eva Kittler, was his father's second wife. The first decades after Ries' birth are not documented, so it is not known which schools he attended. There is also no information about the studies of the later mathematician in the matriculation registers of the universities which existed at that time. The first time at all that Adam Ries was mentioned in a document was on April 22, 1517, when he appeared before the Council of Staffelstein because of a dispute over an inheritance. Already in 1509, he stayed with his younger brother, Conrad, in Zwickau, who attended the Latin school there. In 1518, Ries went to Erfurt, where he led a mathematics school, and he wrote two of his mathematics books and had them published there. In 1522 or 1523, he moved to the still new mining city of Annaberg, where he spent the rest of his life. There he ended work on the manuscript of his algebra textbook, "Coß", in 1524, although the book was not published until 1992 by B.G. Teubner. Brings Helen Keller's story to life
I just read this book to my 5-year old daughter and she was hooked from beginning to end. I'm not sure that means this book is for kindergartners, but manga (Japanese comic books) in general tend to have a cinematic style that, at least in the case of Helen Keller's story, worked surprisingly well for reading aloud. Since I do not know much about Helen Keller I can't say whether this "Edu-Manga" gets the story 100% right, but I'll give the author and artist the benefit of the doubt of having strived for accuracy. Overall, it felt like I was learning something along with my daughter, so I presume most people new to Helen Keller's amazing story would benefit from reading it, especially book-averse teens (I personally have no problem with gaining information through comic books/graphic novels/manga), which is undoubtedly the Edu-Manga series' target demographic. I would have given the book 5 stars, but the translation at times retains too much in the way of Japanese modes of speech. For instance, the translator has the book's characters throughout the story call Helen Keller's assistant "Teacher" rather than "MIss Sullivan" or "Anne." As a student of Japanese I know that this is simply a direct translation of the word "sensei" (teacher), which is how Japanese people refer to teachers whether they know their name or not. Americans, though, do not speak this way, and that and other awkward translations give the dialogue a stilted feeling at times. Also, a quick look at the Wikipedia article on Helen Keller shows her to have been a brunette as a child, whereas the artist made her a typical blonde caucasian girl of the type found throughout the Japanese manga universe. Nonetheless, these are really quibbles, and if this and the other Edu-Manga help kids learn history, then they've done their job. Overall, a fine effort. ... Read more
