A pleasant discovery
Laurent Schwartz was awarded a Fields Medal for his development of distribution theory (sometimes called generalized functions). Despite the international prominence of Schwartz and the blooming interest in distribution theory, his tome in French has yet to be translated.

This was the closest thing available to learn about this fascinating theory from a mathematical pioneer. The text is brief, to the point and clear. A very enjoyable read. Hopefully, Dover will pick this title up one day and give this treatise the exposure it serves. ... Read more

Grappling is the word
This book is as fascinating to anyone interested in mathematics as any other mathematician's biography, with the extra asset of his life being deeply imbedded in 20th century history. While it gives a most interesting account of the French and international mathematical world during the second half of the century (especially on Bourbaki and, of course, on the distributions), it also tales the story of a "committed" (formerly trotskist) intellectual who valued his struggle for decolonization as highas his mathematical work. ... In this book the authors suggest that a "dysmethylation syndrome" may affect the vital regulation of cell growth, metabolism and mitosis, and may then lead to cancer. These dysmethylations (which may be hyper- or hypomethylations) affect not only the expression of the genes involved in growth and mitosis, but also the activity of enzymes such as phosphatase PP2A, which is assembled after methylation. This phosphatase limits the effects of the trophic kinases activated by growth factors or oncogenes. In the neurones, the syndrome associated with a deficit in the methylation of phosphatase and other substratsa favours the accumulation of hyperphosphorylated proteins, as in Alzheimer's disease. This would mean that cancer and Alzheimer's disease, as well as Biermer's anaemia, are linked to cellular methylations. ... Read more
