Excerpt: Xun Yu (163 - 212), styled Wenruo (), was a strategist and statesman who served as a key advisor to Cao Cao during the Three Kingdoms era of China. Xun Yu was a native of Yingchuan (modern day Xuchang, Henan), and was born to a renowned family. His grandfather, Xun Shu, served as a local governor and his eight sons were called the "Eight Dragons"; an uncle, Xun Shuang, served as one of the Three Excellencies, while his own father Xun Fan was the chancellor of the feudal principality of Jibei. Xun Yu proved to be a talented youth, and was evaluated by the scholar He Yong as "someone capable of assisting kings" (). In 189 he was nominated as Xiaolian (literally "Fillial and Incorrupt"), beginning his career as an official in the Eastern Han Dynasty, but Dong Zhuo entered the capital of Luoyang soon after, and fearing for his safety Xun Yu fled to Ji Province (modern-day Hebei), resigning his post. In the subsequent years local warlords quickly rose in each region; Xun Yu first served Yuan Shao, whose power base was in Ji Province, but later left him and went over to Cao Cao in 191; Cao Cao recognised his talent, calling him "my Zifang" (Zifang being the courtesy name of Zhang Liang, a key advisor to Han Gaozu) and appointing him as an army commandant. Xun Yu's contributions to Cao Cao's army and administration are i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=459399 ... Read more

Product Description
Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Lucius Septimius Severus (or rarely Severus I) (11 April 145 - 4 February 211) was a Roman Emperor who reigned from 14 April 193 until his death in 211. Severus was the first emperor of the troubled Severan dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of the Roman principate before the Crisis of the Third Century. The Severan house included the emperors Septimius Severus, his sons Geta and Caracalla (r. 211-217), and his wife's grandnephews, first Elagabalus and then Alexander Severus (r. 218-235). Septimius Severus was born at Leptis Magna in what is now the Libyan part of the Africa Province. As a young man, Severus advanced through the customary succession of offices under the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Severus seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193 during the so-called Year of the Five Emperors. After deposing the incumbent emperor, Didius Julianus, in a bloodless coup, Severus waged war with his rival claimants, the generals Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, who were finally defeated in 194 and 197, respectively. Septimius Severus was born on 11 April 145 at Leptis Magna (in modern Libya), son of Publius Septimius Geta and Fulvia Pia. Severus came from a wealthy, distinguished family of equestrian rank. He was of Italian Roman ancestry on his mother's side and of Punic or Libyan-Punic ancestry on his father's. Severus' father was an obscure provincial who held no major political status, but he had two cousins, Publius Septimius Aper and Gaius Septimius Severus, who served as consuls under emperor Antoninus Pius. His mother's family had moved from Italy to North Africa and was of the Fulvius gens, an ancient and politically influential clan which was originally of plebeian status. Severus' siblings were an older brother, Publius Septimius Geta, and a younger sister, Septimia Octavilla. Severus's maternal cousin was Praetorian prefect and consul Gaius Fulvius ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt: Sima Jiong () (died 302), courtesy name Jingzhi (), formally Prince Wumin of Qi (), was an Jin Dynasty (265-420) imperial prince who briefly served as Emperor Hui's regent after overthrowing the usurper Sima Lun in 301. He was the fourth of the eight princes commonly associated with the War of the Eight Princes. Sima Jiong was the son of Sima You, Prince Xian of Qi, the younger brother of Jin Dynasty's founder Emperor Wu, making him Emperor Hui's cousin. Sima You's abilities were so highly regarded by both his father Sima Zhao and the officials that, at times, he was considered as the proper heir, first for Sima Zhao, then for Emperor Wu. After Emperor Wu therefore exiled him from the capital Luoyang in 282, he died in 283. Sima Jiong, as the oldest son of his wife, inherited his post, and complained to Emperor Wu about doctors' misdiagnosis. (The doctors, who had thought that they would gain Emperor Wu's favor if they informed him that Prince You was healthy (so that he could indeed go to his principality, had minimized the illness that Prince You was suffering.) As an imperial prince, Sima Jiong had a sizable number of troops under his command. When Sima Lun overthrew Emperor Hui's domineering wife Empress Jia Nanfeng in 300 after she murdered Emperor Hui's crown prince Sima Yu, Sima Jiong was a participant of the coup, but did not receive great rewards afterwards. He therefore resented Sima Lun. Sima Lun, seeing his resentment, tried to appe...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3585033 ... Read more

Excerpt: Taizu () Cao Cao (Mandarin pronunciation: ; 155 March 15, 220), styled Mengde, was a warlord and the penultimate Chancellor of the Eastern Han Dynasty who rose to great power during the dynasty's final years in ancient China. As one of the central figures of the Three Kingdoms period, he laid the foundations for what was to become the state of Cao Wei and was posthumously titled Emperor Wu of Wei (). Although often portrayed as a cruel and merciless tyrant, Cao has also been praised as a brilliant ruler and military genius who treated his subordinates like his family. He was also skilled in poetry and martial arts and authored many war journals. Cao Cao was born in the county of Qiao (, present day Bozhou, Anhui) in 155. His father Cao Song was a foster son of Cao Teng, who in turn was one of the favorite eunuchs of Emperor Huan. Some historical records, including Biography of Cao Man, claim that Cao Song's original family name was Xiahou (thus making Cao Cao a relative of Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan, two of his most prominent generals). In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Song was said to be from the Xiahou clan and was adopted into the Cao family. Cao Cao was known for his craftiness as an adolescent. According to the Biography of Cao Man, Cao Cao's uncle often complained to Cao Song about Cao Cao's indulgence in hunting and music with Yuan Shao. In retaliation, Cao Cao feigned a fit before his uncle one day, who immediately rushed to inform Cao Song. When Cao Song went to see his son, Cao Cao behaved normally. When asked, Cao Cao...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=241636 ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Excerpt:Aquila Romanus , a Latin grammarian who flourished in the second half of the 3rd century AD. He was the author of an extant treatise De Figuris Sententiarum et Elocutionis , written as an instalment of a complete rhetorical handbook for the use of a young and eager correspondent. While recommending Demosthenes and Cicero as models, he takes his own examples almost exclusively from Cicero. His treatise is really adapted from that by Alexander, son of Numenius , as is expressly stated by Julius Rufinianus, who brought out a supplementary treatise, augmented by material from other sources. Aquila's style is harsh and careless, and the Latin is inferior. References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Arnobius of Sicca (Greek : ; died c. 330) was an Early Christian apologist , during the reign of Diocletian (284 305). According to Jerome 's Chronicle, Arnobius, before his conversion, was a distinguished rhetorician at Sicca Veneria (Le Kef, Tunisia), a major Christian center in Proconsular Africa , and owed his conversion to a premonitory dream. Arnobius writes dismissively of dreams in his surviving book, so perhaps Jerome was projecting his own respect for the content of dreams. According to Jerome, to overcome the doubts of the local bishop as to the earnestness of his Christian belief he wrote ( ca 303, from evidence in IV:36) an apologetic work in seven books that St. Jerome calls Adversus Gentes but which is entitled Adversus Nationes in the... ...
