5-0 out of 5 stars What the...?
When the back of the book said; 'If you think that you are beyond surprise. That nothing can shock you...Think again.' They were correct. I was utterly taken by surprise. Did I feel it was strange to lose three close people of that magnitude. Yes. However, I figured it to be bad coincidences by the author. I was pleasantly wrong.

At first, I thought Sam to be whipped by the experience of Evelyn bestowed upon him. (Well, most likely he was.) Come to find out he's this clingy guy, and likes to do away with those that attempt to leave him. I went through an array of emotions with Sam, and at times, I often found myself feeling sorry for him.

The book carried me from page to page weightlessly, and I found myself gobbling the book in no time.

Although there was nothing spectacular about this prose, I was moved by the story. Good Job, Simpson! ... Read more

Product Description
Thomas K. Simpson examines Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism with the tools of literary criticism, exploring questions of meaning, structure, and style. Maxwell was very concerned with the relation of meaning to form of presentation, as Simpson brought out in his guide to three Maxwell papers, Maxwell on the Electromagnetic Field: A Guided Study, published by Rutgers University Press. Figures of Thought is the definitive argument against Hertz's claim that "Maxwell's theory is Maxwell's system of equations." This exciting new book carries out a project seldom undertaken in our time, that of recognizing a classic of mathematical physics as a work of literature. James Clerk Maxwell s Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (1873) established the scope and the shape of classical electromagnetic science from field theory (epitomized in Maxwell s equations ) to the electromagnetic theory of light. Maxwell, however, wrote as a natural philosopher, with purposes reaching far beyond the equations of electromagnetism. We get closer to Maxwell s underlying thought when we read the Treatise with an eye to its literary form and to what Simpson identifies as Maxwell s rhetoric of mathematical physics. Comments on Figures of Thought: "Simpson perceives Maxwell as driven by a purpose, which is to render the electromagnetic field as a dynamic whole that is everywhere evident, a kind of dramatic presence, in its observable parts. Simpson's account of this is, like Maxwell's own, a work of discovery, not dissection, wonderfully fresh and always happy in the task of interpretation it has set itself, with serious implications for science generally and the natural world it tries to know." John Van Doren Past Executive Editor, The Great Ideas Today "With a sure hand and a discerning eye, Simpson reveals the interpretive and transformative functions of Maxwell s principal theorems and several of his fundamental experiments. He reviews the literary tropes Maxwell employs and delineates the poetic whole to whose shaping those devices contribute. Thomas Simpson has written an original and challenging study of Maxwell s Treatise, deftly showing how an appreciation of Maxwell s literary strategy reinforces the reader s understanding of his conception of electricity and magnetism. Simpson evinces the unity and clarity of Maxwell s vision, and convinces the reader of his higher purpose. Simpson s evocation of the 'poetics of the indirect way' will be read with profit by scientists, historians, philosophers, and the lay reader." Robert H. Kargon Willis K. Shepard Professor of the History of Science, Johns Hopkins University ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that rightly treats "Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism" as a work of classic literature
Reading the original works by the greatest scientists and mathematicians teaches you in ways that no other exploration can provide. Unfortunately, sometimes the material is so poorly written that it is almost incomprehensible. Yet, some of the greatest scientists in history have been passable or even good writers. In 1873, James Clerk Maxwell wrote "A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism", a work that provided the theoretical foundation for a broad spectrum of modern devices. The Maxwell equations describe the interrelationship between electric fields, magnetic fields, electric charge, the structure and speed of light and the electric current. In my opinion, only Newton's "Principia" has had a greater influence on the development of technology.
In this book, Simpson treats Maxwell's "Treatise" as a piece of literary history, which is unusual and accurate. The classic works by the scientific greats are masterpieces of literature and should be studied as such. Simpson does an excellent job in explaining the historical context of the project, giving due credit to those whose work was the foundation of "Treatise." Ampere, Faraday and Lagrange all helped set the stage for this masterpiece of scientific reasoning. Simpson also explains the content of "Treatise" in a manner that most people can understand, although to his credit, he retains the equations. For any comment on "Treatise" without reference to Maxwell's equations would indeed be hollow.
It is my wish that this book is a trend setter in the sense that the classic scientific works be considered as works of literature as well. Because they are, their influence in the world is far greater than almost every other book and they should be treated as such.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real-life guide to Poland's Ancient Capital
Scott Simpson's "Travellers Krakow" is the perfect companion for the visitor who wants to look past the tourist traps and potted history and delve into the back-alleys and esoteric hotspots of this amazing city. Krakow is one of the least-appreciated of Europe's old cities, and author Scott Simpson shows you what you've been missing. Krakow was a medieval enclave of heretics and intellectuals, boasts one of the oldest universities in Europe, and was a jewel of the Renaissance. Simpson takes you to the churches, fortifications, pagan mounds, inside the legends and rollicking festivals in this book that will make any visit to Krakow a memory of a lifetime.

The author is an American expatriate who has lived for years in Poland and understands the language, history and culture, and doesn't steer the reader into the pap and crap so many other guidebooks do. "Travellers Krakow" is not only thorough, it's an exciting read. If you get one book on Krakow, this is it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good City Book - Cook's Editions are solid!
Simply put, the Thomas Cook guides are superb. My only gripe with them as a long-time user has been that their maps could use work and that they are a bit heavy (because they do a super-quality print job on excellent paper) -- and those maps still can use some work (and larger print!) But you can get a good small map free at any hotel - or once you're there, the very short guide to Krakow at most souvenir stands (a bright yellow book that comes in many languages and is very slim) to supplement the Cook's guide.

I always come back to Thomas Cook guides - for both countries and cities. ... Read more
