Product Description

Product Description
The modern city always exerts a semiotic bombardment: we are surrounded on all sides by a pictographic labyrinth, whether in notices, posters, graffiti or advertising. But with the use of digital cameras and GPS receivers, this bombardment can be turned into a tool for creativity, for the pursuit of chance associations and synchronicities. In Signs of the City, teenagers and young adults in Barcelona, Berlin, London and Sofia do just that, with the aid and encouragement of professional artists. The book is the result of a project that lasted one year, incorporating workshops, online activities, conferences and exhibitions, and that initiated a network between over 30 institutions. The perspectives that emerge from the lenses of these teenagers and young adults are of course fresh and surprising, and offer new takes on the four European metropolises, through the most innovative possibilities of data processing. ... Product Description
On the Nature of Things commemorates a photojournalistic genius whose passion for his subject has rarely been equalled and whose pioneering techniques continue to define contemporary science/technological photography. Accompanied by commentary from Nobel prize-winning scientists, Goro's extraordinary images create a work of expertise and enchantment.

For almost fifty years, Fritz Goro gave Life magazine readers of all ages an eyewitness view of the greatest scientific and technological breakthroughs of our time. The splitting of the atom; the deciphering of DNA; the invention of the hologram; the coming of fiber optics, lasers, computers, microsurgery--these are only a handful of the momentous discoveries he captured in his consummately innovative photography, providing an intimate look at the way new phenomena work and revealing as never before the infinite shapes and dazzling lights and colors that comprise the universe.

It was Goro who went on-site with the Manhattan Project, actually standing on ground zero while it was still radioactive from the A-bomb test; who first photographed blood circulation in living animals; who documented a minute quality of plutonium as it was being produced, thus marking a milestone of the nuclear age; who captured a fetal image so hauntingly universal, it became the inspiration for the Starchild in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001. Perhaps most remarkable of all, he photographed the first model of explanation of the atom. Photographing subjects that were sometimes abstract and often evasive, Goro became a master of technical improvisation; in order to translate atomic physics visually, he used four lenses of different focal lengths, rotated the film position fifteen times, and made a total of thirty-three different exposures one one sheet of eight-by-ten color film.

Nearly a decade after his death, Aperture accords Fritz Goro the tribute he so richly deserves with the first comprehensive collection of his landmark work. More than a handsome book of 159 photographs, On the Nature of Things draws the reader into the environment of each depicted breakthrough with an immediacy intensified by the comments of eminent scientists--all international leaders in their respective fields, many of whom worked closely with Goro while he was visualizing their great achievements. Among them are Dr. Lennart Nilsson of Stockholm, one of the greatest of all medical photographers; Professor Ilya Prigogine, Nobel laureate in rotating chemical reactions; Professor Glenn Seaborg, Nobel prize-winner in medicine, neurology professor David Hubel; and Oliver Sacks, neurologist and celebrated author of Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Anthropologist Stephen Jay Gould, one of the most widely read scientific writers of our time, supplies an introduction; while Goro's grandsons, Thomas, Peter, and Stefan Goreau, all respected scientists, contribute to a biographical essay.

Beautiful, startling, enlightening, On the Nature of Things shines with a rare fascination.

Product Description
In the dissertation combined reinforcement learning(RL) and simulated annealing (SA) concepts, problems, proposedsolutions, algorithms and application examples are shown.RL models a decision maker as a goal-driven agentaiming to reach goal states in the problem representation statespace. The agent takes different choices among the numerouspossibilities, but each choice can make different impact in the environment. Each decision has someeffect being expressed in the form ofnumeric honor or dishonor, in a reward value. The agent utilizes thefeedback to recognize which actions are honored and which arenot. The agent then tries to govern its decision sequence into thedirection that maximizes the ¿environment¿s satisfaction¿.The concept of SA is based on the analogy of howliquids freeze. There an initially high temperature and disorderedmelt is slowly cooled down and reaches thermal equilibrium. While in annealing the temperature parameter bounds are straightforward, in SA they might be dependent on theproblem and its numeric representation. This dissertation gives a method which can be usedfor defining temperature bounds in RL environment. ... Excerpt: Heiner Müller (January 9, 1929 December 30, 1995) was a German (formerly East German) dramatist, poet, writer, essayist and theatre director. Described as "the theatre's greatest living poet" since Samuel Beckett, Müller is arguably the most important German dramatist of the 20th century after Bertolt Brecht. His "enigmatic, fragmentary pieces" are a significant contribution to postmodern drama and postdramatic theatre. Müller was born in Eppendorf, Saxony. He joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED) in 1947 and began serving for the German Writers' Association (Deutscher Schriftsteller-Verband, DSV) in 1954. Excerpt: Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner (25 or 27 February 1861 30 March 1925) was an Austrian philosopher, social thinker, architect and esotericist. He gained initial recognition as a literary critic and cultural philosopher. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he founded a new spiritual movement, Anthroposophy, as an esoteric philosophy growing out of European transcendentalism and with links to Theosophy. Steiner led this movement through several phases. In the first, more philosophically oriented phase, Steiner attempted to find a synthesis between science and mysticism; his philosophical work of these years, which he termed spiritual science, sought to provide a connection between the cognitive path of Western philosophy and the inner and spiritual needs of the human being. Excerpt: Jan Garrigue Masaryk (September 14, 1886 March 10, 1948) was a Czech diplomat and politician and Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia from 1940 to 1948. Born in Prague, he was a son of professor and politician Tomá Masaryk (who became the first President of Czechoslovakia in 1918) and his American wife, Charlotte Garrigue. Masaryk was educated in Prague and also in the USA, where he also for a time lived as a drifter and lived on the earnings of his manual labor. He returned home in 1913 and served in the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War. He then joined the diplomatic service and became chargé d'affaires to the USA in 1919, a post he held until 1922. In 1925 he was made ambassador to Britain. His father resigned as President in 1935 and died two years later. He was succeeded by Edvard Bene. In September 1938 the so-called Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia was occupied by German forces and Masaryk resigned as Ambassador in protest, although he remained in London. Other government members including Bene also resigned. In March 1939 Germany occupied the remaining parts of the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia, and a puppet Slovak state was established in Slovakia. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks too..
I'd like to thank the previous reviewer for the link information to the pdf file. It is rough and incomplete, but heck, it's free and will help me out a lot with a new 168-portlet project I have been assigned too. Thanks David.

5-0 out of 5 stars Free download of the almost-complete manuscript from Manning
The publisher, Manning, is certainly a good public citizen. They assembled an excellent team of subject matter experts to write a book on Portals and Portlet development. The team wrote the book, but Manning chose not to publish it. Consequently, it hasn't gone through the usual edit/review process, but it's still an excellent resource. Manning is offering the book, in PDF form, as a free download at manning.com/hepperThe manuscript was made available on October 25, 2005.

I wonder why they chose not to publish it? Insufficient demand, probably. But as someone who would likely have bought the book, a free manuscript, authored by fellow technical experts, is an excellent deal. It's a little rough, but excellent value!

Enjoy!
