Mel Waldman's short stories in this issue are hair-raising - he's a shrink in NYC - make me think he should lying on the couch, not sitting impassively at the end of it.The photos by Doug Johnson are beautiful, his poems are ephemeral and cryptic.Like them anyway - no, don't know what they mean - just find them beautiful.I like all 5 issues of this journal I've bought. My main interest is the poetry, which I think is far above average. ... Excerpt: Bernd Schneider (born 20 July 1964 in St. Ingbert) is a retired touring car driver from Germany. Schneider was named after legendary driver Bernd Rosemeyer, winner of the 1936 European Drivers Championship. Introduced to karting at an early age, he displayed an obvious talent for racing. After several years in the junior kart series, Schneider won the 1980 German Kart championship. Two years later, he would win the 1982 European Kart championship with the national team. In 1983, he won the African kart championship. The next few years, Schneider would race in the various Formula Ford series in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. In 1986, he joined the German Formula Three circuit, winning the title the following year in 1987. This brought him to the attention of Erich Zakowski, who signed Schneider to drive for his Formula One team Zakspeed in 1988 and 1989. However, the small German-based squad did little to make an impression on the F1 circuit, with Schneider only able to qualify for nine races. Schneider also briefly drove for Arrows, before racing Porsche sports cars in the early 1990s for Joest Racing, in the World Sportscar Championship and races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Schneider won his fifth DTM championship in 2006.In 1992, Schneider moved to the DTM (German Touring Car Championship), driving for AMG-Mercedes. Finishing third his first season, he...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1872233 ... Read more

Product Description

A Stranger to Myself: The Inhumanity of War, Russia 1941-44 is the haunting memoir of a young German soldier on the Russian front during World War II. Willy Peter Reese was only twenty years old when he found himself marching through Russia with orders to take no prisoners. Three years later he was dead. Bearing witness to--and participating in--the atrocities of war, Reese recorded his reflections in his diary, leaving behind an intelligent, touching, and illuminating perspective on life on the eastern front. He documented the carnage perpetrated by both sides, the destruction which was exacerbated by the young soldiers' hunger, frostbite, exhaustion, and their daily struggle to survive. And he wrestled with his own sins, with the realization that what he and his fellow soldiers had done to civilians and enemies alike was unforgivable, with his growing awareness of the Nazi policies toward Jews, and with his deep disillusionment with himself and his fellow men.

An international sensation, A Stranger to Myself is an unforgettable account of men at war.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional, poetic, figurative tale of one man's experiences
The author of the book, Willy Peter Reese, describes his experiences at the front from a purely emotional perspective (as opposed to historical) in this book. The author, who was (literally) a want to be poet, provides a poetic and figurative description of his experiences at the front written while he was at home on leave. It should be stressed, however, that this book is in no way meant to be a historical account of even one man's struggle through the war. It is definitely not Bibermann's "In Deadly Combat: A German Soldier's Memoir of the Eastern Front" or Guy Sajev's "The Forgotten Soldier". Those who desire a literal and historical of a soldier's personal experiences should read these instead.

Although the book does a good job of conveying a soldier's emotions and their development as the war progresses, it is still not as strong, in terms of this attempt, as many of the better known English poets of the First World War (i.e., Owen). Then again, the English poets were products of Cambridge and Oxford and the British "Public" school system (i.e., Eaton). In other words the educational elite. Reese, on the other hand, was only a middle class high school graduate with no formal post-secondary school education when he was drafted (he was a bank trainee when he was drafted). Hence it is no surprise his eloquence is not match of the English poets. Nevertheless, it still provides an emotional outpouring of one soldier's experiences and how they were shaped by the harsh climate of combat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lyrical Account of the Eastern Front Meat Grinder
The prelude describes the Eastern Front as the desperate struggle between two clashing ideologies, with both sides knowing that the stakes involved not only defeat on the battlefield, but annihilation of the respective civilian populations caught behind the ever shifting front line.Reese describes the harshness of the Russian winters and summers with as much feeling and terror as the mortar rounds and merciless Cossack charges that were endured by German soldiers.

Reese is not a committed Nazi, and as such, does not go through the complete transformation that disillusionment with war normally brings. He joined the Wehrmacht not because of patriotic fervor or racial hatred, but more out of boredom from being a banker. There is never any expression of a hope for victory over the Red Army, only a lyrical narrative of the Hieronymus Bosch backdrop in which he is a helpless figure. There is no redemption in this book other than the author gaining asense of freedom after ultimately losing his fear of death.

I am surprised that we haven't had more accounts like this fromWehrmacht soldiers.Willi Heinrich's "Cross of Iron" comes close to capturing this same pervasive fear and cynicism felt by the average German front line soldier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Underrated and Underpriced!
A very candid look at life in a hopeless situation on the battlefields of the eastern front. Because this was written before the author had time to reflect after 20 or 30 years like most memiors, it is honest and does not ask for forgiveness. This book gives a true inside to life as a Gernan soldier in world war two. This one is different though because in most memiors the author spend at least a chapter apalogizing or dening knowledge of Nazi atrocities. Because this book was written during the war it is brutally honest and has not been molded by time. It shares a consistant theme with many other German memiors as to life in the front, but this one is depressing and transforming. Worth a read and well worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars A STRANGER TO MYSELF
Willy Peter Reese is a young low ranking German foot soldier attached to various infantry and artillery units on the Russian front. This is his story, his experience. A talented writer, Reese documents his transformation in combat from civilian to soldier to killer to desperate survivor to someone alien to his former self. The account is extremely descriptive and honest. The Russian front is skillfully portrayed like nothing else I have ever read. I recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II and in particular, the Russian front.

2-0 out of 5 stars War is Hell. Blah blah blah
I wanted a horrifying memoir of war. SOmething that would haunt me for years. Maybe my expectations were too high. Sure there are scenes of people cutting off feet so they cat get new boots, but I'm from Minnesota. I've spent months grabbing lost gloves from bus stops. If I was desperate for new boots I seriously doubt I'd have a problem with taking them off a dead guy; although as dead people on Minneapolis streets are a rare commodity this theory has yet to be tested.

Beyond that it's a lot purple prose and flower arrangements. Willy Reese might have grown into a competant writer had he lived. He might have mined this experience for some of the most horrifying novels of the 20th century. It could have been an All Quiet on the Western Front or a The Naked and the Dead: 50th Anniversary Edition but instead it's just a book about a guy who is in a war. He doesn't like it. He's not sure if he believes in G-d. He's horrified about most things.

And there are several false notes like when he breaks down crying toward the end of the book. There's nothing in that crying jag that seems genuine since this guy has presumably been at war for years. If he's going to cry about getting rescued or seeing his friends die he would have pulled that move early. It's pure literary flummory to gives us tears at such a late hour. SOunds more like he's trying to impress some woman with his sensitivity than him actually being at war.

So it's pretty much a badly written book by a guy who was one of the cogs in the machine of the worst crime of the 20th century. Boohoo. He's dead. Good. ... Read more
