Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban and later Marquis de Vauban (15 May 1633 - 30 March 1707), commonly referred to as Vauban, was a Marshal of France and the foremost military engineer of his age, famed for his skill in both designing fortifications and breaking through them. He also advised Louis XIV on how to consolidate France's borders, to make them more defensible. Vauban made a radical suggestion of giving up some land that was indefensible to allow for a stronger, less porous border with France's neighbours. Vauban was born in Saint-Léger-de-Foucheret (renamed Saint-Léger-Vauban in his honour in 1867), in the département of Yonne, in Burgundy, France, into a family of minor nobility. At the age of ten he was left an orphan in very poor circ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt:Anthony Fokker Anton Herman Gerard Fokker (6 April 1890 23 December 1939) was a pioneer in aviation and a Dutch aircraft manufacturer .Early life Anthony (Tony) Fokker was born in Blitar (then Dutch East Indies , now Indonesia ), son of Herman Fokker, a Dutch coffee plantation owner. Some sources say that he was born in Kediri . At that time, Blitar was a part of so-called Kediri Residency, a colonial-era administrative division whose capital was in Kediri.Four years later the family returned to the Netherlands and settled in Haarlem in order to provide Tony and his older sister, Toos, with a Dutch upbringing. Tony was not studious but rather played with model trains and steam engines, and he did not complete his high school education. He devised a leak-proof tire but this was not an original invention and was already patented.Move to Germany Anthony Fokker in 1912.Fokker's first interest in flight stemmed from Wilbur Wright 's exhibition flights in France in the summer and fall of 1908. In 1910, at age 20, Fokker was sent by his father to Germany to receive training as a mechanic , but his interest was in flying , and h... ... Read more

Van Den Berg, Bas Van Der Vlies, Rik Grashoff, George Arnold Escher, Guillaume Daniel Delprat, Evert Dudok, Andries Vierlingh, Cryn Fredericks. Excerpt: Simon Stevin (1548/49 1620) was a Flemish mathematician and engineer. He was active in a great many areas of science and engineering, both theoretical and practical. He also translated various mathematical terms into Dutch, making it one of the few European languages in which the word for mathematics, wiskunde ("the art of what is certain"), was not derived from Greek (via Latin). Stevin was born in Bruges, Flanders (now Belgium) in the year 1548, to Antheunis Stevin and Cathelyne van der Poort. Very little has been recorded about his life. Even the exact date of birth and the date and place of his death (The Hague or Leiden) are uncertain. It is known that he left a widow with two children; and one or two hints scattered throughout his works inform us that he began life as a merchant's clerk in Antwerp, that he travelled in Poland, Denmark and other parts of northern Europe. After his travels, he became advisor and tutor of Prince Maurice of Nassau, who asked his advice on many occasions, and made him a public officer at first director of the so-called "waterstaet" (the government authority for public works), and later quartermaster-general. In Bruges there is a Simon Stevin Square which contains his statue by Eugen Simonis, which includes his inclined plane diagram.
