Product Description
In 1633, George Herbert published what has become the best-known religious poem in the English language, The Temple. Actually a sequence of poems, The Temple is shaped by the order of church ritual and liturgy. At the heart of The Temple stands "The Church," poems that are patterned on the Church's liturgical calendar and that discuss theological ideas such as death, judgment, and heaven. Herbert's poetry is at once personal and confessional. His poems about the Eucharist and holy baptism are not only general theological explorations of the sacraments but also the poet's expression of the struggles of his own flesh to be reconciled to God. This mildly modernized edition makes the spiritual insight and quiet passion of this great poet available to today's reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of scholarship
I totally agree with tifepiphany! The work is a gift to all who love 17th Century poetry / George Herbert / and poetry of the highest level. The Critical Introduction alone makes this a necessary book - the re-creation of the text and a generous selection of facsimile prints on corresponding pages make this a delight!Do yourself and favor and buy this book... I bought 2 copies.Books like thisusual cost 50 to 60 dollars.Thank you Mario Di Cesare for this amazing work that should set a new standard for scholarly re-creations of texts - especially for those of us who can not afford $150.00 facsimiles. This is now one of my most beloved books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for students of Herbert & 17th Century Eng Lit
The amount of detail in this reproduced/recreated edition of the Bolleian Tanner 307 edition of Herbert is a GREAT service to all interested in Herbert and 17th Century English Literature. This text, convincingly, elucidates many elements of the strong editing by Buck (1633) and makes available the source text for Buck and what is arguably the central text for understanding George Herbert. Thank you Mario Di Cesare!!!

--- by way of correction, Amazon lists this work as only a little over a hundred pages, it is in fact closer to 400 - and each page a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps authoritative
Di Cesare makes a relatively persuasive argument that this Bodleian manuscript is more authoritative than a widely accepted first printed edition of 1635. The manuscript is not Herbert's, so it is a live argument as to which represents his most specific intentions. I don't know which is closer to what Herbert had in mind, but the extraordinarily painstaking reproduction of such elements as the relative size of letters is appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the editor's description; ignore 5-star rating.
Mario A. Di Cesare writes: The Bodleian manuscript of George Herbert's wonderful set of poems called The Temple is a beautiful work made with loving care at Little Gidding in the months after Herbert's death in 1633.It is also the most important manuscript of Herbert's poetry.

This volumepresents an exact transcription of the manuscript, page by page, renderingprecisely or recording not just the spelling and punctuation (including theplacement of punctuation), but also the visual layout, the specialcharacters (size, position, emphasis), the corrections and insertions, andthe graphic characteristics of the page: Computer typography allowed me toimitate the original pages closely. (Lots of facsimile pages are alsoincluded.) My three-part introduction shows why contact with originalmanuscripts is important, argue the primacy of this manuscript forHerbert's text, and give critical readings of the poems themselves.

I amhappy to report that my book has been widely praised by reviewers andcalled indispensable for anyone seriously interested in Herbert's poetry. ... Read more

Product Description

For more than 1500 years, from the Indian subcontinent to the islands of the Indonesian archipelago, the temple has embodied and symbolized the Hindu worldview at its deepest level and inspired the greatest architectural and artistic achievements in Hindu Asia. In The Hindu Temple, considered the standard introduction to the subject, George Michell explains the cultural, religious, and architectural significance of the temple. He illustrates his points with a profusion of photographs, building plans, and drawings of architectural details, making the book a useful guide for travelers to Asia as well as an illuminating text for students of architecture, religion, and Asian civilizations.

Michell's discussion of the meaning and forms of the temple in Hindu society encompasses the awe-inspiring rock-cut temples at Ellora and Elephanta, the soaring superstructures and extraordinary sexual exhibitionism of the sculptures at Khajuraho, and the colossal mortuary temple of Angkor Vat, as well as the tiny iconic shrines that many Hindus wear around their necks and the simple shrines found under trees or near ponds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer for Hardy's "The Temple Architecture of India"
I would most definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Indian temples ... an easy read for the beginner to digest and provides valuable insight into the divine nature, purpose, and construction of Indian temples ... a great primer for his student Dr. Adam Hardy's book "The Temple Architecture of India" ... reading Michell's book first makes Hardy's much easier to read and more intelligible

4-0 out of 5 stars The classic text on the subject
Michell is an extremely careful and conscientious chronicler of this difficult, dense subject. He writes unusually well - absolutely clear English - and makes his way through a wide array of topics. Invaluable to the student of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the philosophy student
This book is great for those who want an in depth look at Hindu philosophy and the place of temples within it.It's a bit scanty on cultural practices and rituals - that is not the book's aim.It does a wonderful job of explaining things so that a Westerner (like me) can understand. It is, however, a very heavy book.It is certainly not light bed time reading like a National Geographic would be. :) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference in Regards to the People's Temple!
I felt this book was exactly on target in regards to studying about how the event of November 18, 1978 came to be and how people tried so hard to prevent such a catastrophe. I felt this book was well-detailed, researched, and easily to read. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down for long. It's a page turner. For anybody interested in studying about the People's Temple, Jim Jones, and Jonestown, this book is a must have on the reading list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, excellent resource
I read this book in high school when I chose to write my term paper on Peoples Temple. I found it again while I was moving and read it again with a much more appreciative attitude. I finished reading it today. This is THE book to read if your simply looking to learn all about the Peoples Temple, Jim Jones, and the tragedy at Jonestown. I have read several other books on the subject, but they lacked the amount of insider knowledge and first-hand accounts of the events that took place. This book is entirely based on FACT, without speculation. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I did not particularly like the way the book ends. Over all, I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It is the most informative source for Peoples Temple facts that I myself have come across. It is the perfect source for research about the Temple, Jim Jones, Jonestown, or even just cults in general. It gives a great perspective from various Temple defectors who came forward and spoke of what life with the Temple was like. George Klineman deserves a lot of recognition for his work on this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Eugene O' Neill is one of America's most celebrated playwrights, but relatively few Americans know the name of the man who essentially gave O' Neill his first chance at greatness: George Cram "Jig" Cook, one of America's most colorful and original thinkers and the founder of the Provincetown Players, the first company to stage O'Neill. Cook's story, with all its hopes, dreams, and disappointments, is told in The Road to the Temple.

First published in 1927 in the United States and reprinted in 1941, this biography is the work of Cook's third wife, Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Susan Glaspell, It traces Cook's lifelong search for self, a search that took him from his birthplace in Davenport, Iowa, to New York to Delphi; from university teaching and truck farming, to the Provincetown Players, to the antiquity of Greece. Part of Jig's story is told by excerpts from his journals, pictures, poetry, and fiction. Interwoven with narrative flashbacks, these entries concerning his day-to-day activities as well as his thoughts and feelings bring him to life for the reader. In addition, Glaspell offers finely crafted portraits of the American Midwest in the late nineteenth century; a vivid picture of Greenwich Village between 1910 and 1920; and a moving and lyrical account of the life she and Jig lived in Greece, where Jig died on January 11, 1924. A compelling combination of biography and autobiography, this volume presents a unique and personal picture of a fascinating American original." ... Read more

So far he was betrayed in one of the letters to the first Lord Camden, for in that letter he touched upon a fact, known only to three persons, Lords Chatham, Camden, and Temple. The latter, during almost the whole period of the Junius, was bitter against the two former: and so was Junius, though with an air of guard and candour."Lord Temple had not eloquence or parts enough to have written Junius; but I have no doubt that he knew the author."Junius addressed only one of his Letters to Lord Camden, No. Ixix., the last in the series of his acknowledged writings, and in this Letter there is only one sentence in which, hy any possibility, such a fact can be involved." After the noble stand you made against Lord Mansfield, upon the question of libel, we did expect that you would not have suffered that matter to have remained undetermined. But it was said that Lord Chief Justice Wilmot had been prevailed upon to vouch for an opinion of the late Judge Yates, which was supposed to make against you ; and we admit of the excuse. When such detestable arts are employed to prejudge a question of right, it might have been imprudent at that time to have brought it to a decision. In the present instance you will have no such opposition to contend with."The above passage, therefore, probably contains the fact to which Mr. Justice Hardinge alludes, as being known only to Lords Chatham, Camden, and Temple. In what manner Lord Chief Justice Wilmot was prevailed upon, or what was the opinion of Mr. Justice Yates, or upon what occasion it was given, I regret th... ... Read more
