Excerpt: Olympia Jean Snowe (born February 21, 1947), née Bouchles, is the senior United States Senator from Maine. She is a Republican and a leading moderate within the party. Snowe has become widely known for her ability to influence the outcome of close votes, including whether to end filibusters. In 2006, she was named one of America's Top Ten Senators by Time Magazine. Snowe was born Olympia Jean Bouchles in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Georgia Goranites and George John Bouchles. Her father immigrated to the United States from Sparta, Greece. She is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Snowe's early life had its share of tragedies; her mother died of breast cancer when she was eight, and her father died of heart disease barely a year later. Orphaned, she was moved to Auburn, Maine, to be raised by her aunt and uncle, a textile mill worker and a barber, respectively, along with their five other children. Her brother John was raised separately, by other family members. Within a few years, illness would also claim her uncle's life. Following her mother's death, Snowe was sent to St. Basil's Academy in Garrison, New York, where she remained from the third grade to the ninth, and she was taught by Athena Hatziemmanuel. Returning to Auburn, she attended Edward Little High School, before entering the University of Maine in Orono, Maine in 1969, where she earned a degree in political science. Shortly after graduation, Bouchles married her fiancé, Republican state legislator Peter Snowe. She received an honorary degree from Bates C...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=375219 ... Read more

This book is certainly of its time, and the rapid development of computer graphical tools since publication has meant that there are options for data exploration which were unachievable at the time of writing. Nevertheless, it makes for an excellent primer for how to think about exploring data and why various graphical approaches make sense before get caught up in the details of how to finesse your chart of choice. It is one of the classics in the field of data visualization.

This book is an excellent introductory book to graphical data analysis. If you are an advanced reader, this book is a good one to have lying around for reference (especially since it costs so little and does not take up much space). The book relies heavily on the use of S-PLUS, a grapical and statistical analysis program. One thing that this text lacks is quantity of examples. The text is also lacking in that there is a lot of material in simple paragraph format rather than broken down steps of procedures. However, the quality of the examples that are included is very high and they usually encompass theoretical concepts completely. With that said, this book covers a wide variety of methods of analysis ranging from simple histograms to advanced data transformation and also touches on a bit of probability. ... Product Description
A fast Fourier transform (FFT) is an efficient algorithm to compute the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and its inverse. There are many distinct FFT algorithms involving a wide range of mathematics, from simple complex-number arithmetic to group theory and number theory; this article gives an overview of the available techniques and some of their general properties, while the specific algorithms are described in subsidiary articles linked below. A DFT decomposes a sequence of values into components of different frequencies. This operation is useful in many fields (see discrete Fourier transform for properties and applications of the transform) but computing it directly from the definition is often too slow to be practical. An FFT is a way to compute the same result more quickly: computing a DFT of N points in the obvious way, using the definition, takes O(N 2) arithmetical operations, while an FFT can compute the same result in only O(N log N) operations. ... Excerpt: Theresa Sparks is a former president of the San Francisco Police Commission and the CEO of a multimillion-dollar sex toy retailer. She is also one of San Francisco's most famous trans women and was a Grand Marshall in the 2008 San Francisco Pride Parade. Sparks is also a member of the Emeritus Board of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, an Army veteran and a trained engineer. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Horizons Foundation, a community-based LGBT philanthropic organization. Theresa Sparks was born on April 8, 1949, in Kansas City, Kansas, where she grew up. A male at birth, Sparks expressed her gender identity at an early age by wearing women's clothing, though she later resisted these impulses in adolescence. Sparks went to Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in engineering. She served in the United States Army. Later she managed several waste management and recycling companies and patented two recycling techniques. She married her first wife in 1971 and together they had three children: two sons and a daughter. After nine years of marriage, Sparks finally revealed to her wif...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11198508 ... Read more
