4-0 out of 5 stars Walker Exposed
There are four full-length treatments of the Walker spy case> The first, by Jack Kneece is a well-done reporter's job, relying largely on trial transcripts, news clippings, and interviews with peripheral characters. The second, by intelligence expert John Barron, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how the case was broken by the FBI, and an illuminating assessment of the damage done by the ring's treachery. The third, by Howard Blum, offers interviews with some of the participants, but suffers from a hard-to-read writing style, including the frequent - and excessive - use of the hyphenated aside.

Pete Earley has put it all together in a well-written book that offers all the needed details in a fast-paced narrative, which includes in-depth interviews with all the particpants except Whitworth. Most revealing are the interviews with Walker himself: He is shown to be a self-centered person with some bizarre personality conflicts. In candid and revealing rationalizations, Walker suggests that he was actually helping his family by involving them in espionage, indicates that he was annoyed that the FBI did not accept his suggestion that he become a "double-agent" after his arrest, and theorizes that he, himself, was the victim of some sort of set-up. Walker comes across as detached from reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars portrait of treachery
"Family of Spies" is an excellent account of the Walker family spy ring, perhaps the most devastating spy ring ever to operate in the USA, certainly within the US Navy. One is constantly amazed in this book by the extent of John Walker, Jr.'s treachery, deceitfulness and total psychpathology. There isn't a person he doesn't try to use, a life he doesn't try to destroy.

It also shows the utter incompetence of US military intelligence security.Walker, his son Michael, and his main accomplice, Jerry Whitworth, stole secrets with impunity and never came close to being caught until Walker's ex-wife turned them all in.Michael was working in secure areas with access to all sorts of classified materials and didn't even have a security clearance--no one bothered to check to see if he had one.Walker faked his way through a regular five-year security background check just by forging an "approved" stamp for under $3.00 and stamping his personnel file.

The book is well-written and fast-paced.Michael Walker served 15 yrs of a 25 yr sentence and is now free but his father deservedly remains in prison. ... Read more

Book Description
Walker Evans's career spread over 46 fitful and prolific years, yet in a scant two, 1935-1936, he produced the singular body of work that came to define him. During that brief time, while working for the Farm Security Administration (previously the U.S. Resettlement Administration) photographing the consequences of the Great Depression, he refined a hybrid style that combined documentation with sly personal comment. He delighted in traveling incognito as an artless photojournalist, but with the independence to satisfy his own artistic designs. Walker Evans: Lyric Documentary presents these seminal images for the first time as a comprehensive, cohesive body of work, in chronological order. These are prime examples of Evans's alchemy, his seemingly effortless transformation of mundane fact into sweeping lyricism. They not only define his mature style, but also offer a path for artists of future generations. Evans has been called the most important American artist of his century, and the impact of his vision reaches well beyond the province of photography. With texts by John T. Hill, Heinz Liesbrock and Allan Trachtenberg. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Walker Evans Book
At once a splendid coffee table book and an impressive work of original scholarship, "Walker Evans: Lyric Documentary," by John T. Hill, has much to please nearly everyone. The duotone black and white reproductions are sumptuous, among the finest I have seen. They illustrate Evans' seminal production during the years 1935-36, photographing for the US Government's Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Their selection, presented in chronological order, is a fine mix of the familiar - many of Evans' greatest images - with lesser known works and variants. Of particular interest to me is a plate comprised of two consecutive exposures that the author has joined together into a powerful panorama (pp. 158-59), a risky move that he manages in bravura fashion.

John T. Hill has written, co-written, or edited, to my count, at least nine books and catalogs on Walker Evans, including "Walker Evans First and Last," "Walker Evans At Work," "Walker Evans The Hungry Eye," "Walker Evans Simple Secrets," and "Walker Evans: Havana 1933." As Evans' friend and colleague for ten years at Yale University, and then as executor of Evans' estate for twenty years, John Hill is uniquely qualified to discuss the photographer and his work. And as a printer of Evans' photographs for nearly forty years, Mr. Hill possesses a thorough understanding of this photographer's oeuvre and intentions.

John Hill's two essays - one on an unpublished lecture Evans gave at Yale, illustrating what the photographer called his "aesthetic autobiography," and the other a short history of Evans' book publications within the context of their times - are important additions to Evans scholarship. Additionally, Alan Trachtenberg has provided an illustrated essay comparing the image selection and sequencing of the two major editions (1941 and 1960) of Evans' and James Agee's "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men."

Of the countless books and articles that have been written about Evans in the thirty-plus years since his death, "Walker Evans: Lyric Documentary" is among the best. It is one of a few that I would classify as an essential Walker Evans book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Walker Evans:Lyric Documentary" by John T. Hill
Walker Evans' famous gift as a photographer is said to be his ability to erase himself as the creator of the images he captured, but he was there, of course, and made the necessary artistic judgments that distinguish his work.John T. Hill's masterful book, "Walker Evans:Lyric Documentary" is, in every way, an apt tribute to Evans' artistry.

Giving us a comprehensive presentation of the best work from Evans' most creative period is valuable enough.Yet Hill has provided something equally wonderful and useful, by illustrating what Evans called his "aesthetic autobiography."Using an unpublished lecture at Yale, in which Evans identified works of art, architecture and science he viewed as inspirations for his work, Hill furnishes compelling examples from these artists as visual annotations to Evans' work.

The result is exactly what one would hope for--not a laborious reinterpretation or egotistical "appreciation" of these great photographs, but a vivid presentation of the images themselves in a fashion that invites interest in the background material as an additional reward for the viewer."Walker Evans:Lyric Documentary" is John T. Hill's fifth book on Evans and provides new insights into the work of the legendary photographer, considered by many to be the greatest artist of our time. This book is a great achievement by Hill, although fittingly, the reader will scarcely notice the skilled editorial hand shaping and ordering these powerful photographs that need little adornment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A uniquely fresh look at the photographs of Walker Evans
This is the only book I know of that contains Evans' own account of his aesthetic genesis with illustrations of his visual sources.Excellent essayby John T. Hill, who was a colleague of Evans at Yale University.Particularly noteworthy are the very finely reproduced plates of the seminal work of Evans during the years 1935-36.These are easily the best reproductions of Evans photographs that I've seen. A scholarly work and an important research tool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Guide
I used the 5e/International Edition of the book "Marketing Strategy: A Decision-Focused Approach" which has the advantage of being compact in text but meaningful in the approach to present the knowledge that you need know for the daily marketing practise. It helps to endeavor the core concepts of marketing strategy with a clear language and "short" (compact) passages. If you have to study in length this book works only as references but if you are looking for an overview this book will serve you well with sections divided in "Introduction of Strategy", "Opportunity Analysis", "Formulating Marketing Strategies and Implementation and Control". Furthermore this book uses company cases (3M, Iomega's Zip, IBM etc.) to introduce new topics and allow for every chapter to have a rich reference guide to second literature. If you combine this book with other literature like (Kotler/Keller,Marketing Management (12th Edition) (Marketing Management) ; Kerin/Peterson,Strategic Marketing Problems: Cases and Comments (11th Edition)), it will complement the study of marketing strategy well. ... Book Description
The Book Lindh's Attorneys Do Not Want You To Read:

"This is to put you on notice that publication would be at your peril."--Brosnahan, Harris, West, Chatterjee, attorneys for John Walker Lindh.

"Yes, I Supported" the 9/11 Attack on America. - John Walker Lindh

John Walker Lindh, at age 14, was a confused, unhappy, angry little boy with a fascination for the violent rhythms of hip-hop music. By age 16, his anger was directed at Jews, Gays, Zionists, Christians, and White America. In 1998 he joined a "Pakistan-based jehadi organization" linked to terrorists wishing to overthrow the USA. He wanted to be a holy warrior. The presence of U.S. ships off the coast of Yemen was "an act of war against Islam" he declared. He journeyed to Yemen on a mission which coincided with the bombing of the USS Cole. Mission accomplished, John Walker left for Pakistan and met with Taliban officials, and then journeyed to Afghanistan where he swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden who preached "Death to America." But was it the USA which John Walker wished to destroy, or his unknown face? John Walker was at war with himself for he hated and sought to destroy his true identity. He called himself "doodoo" but pretended he was a Black "gangsta" rap star wannabe, and announced he would "remain anonymous" because of homosexuality. He was not a "worthless dickrider" but an imitation Muslim in search of purity. Yet imitation is not reality, which is why John Walker Lindh, in picking up the martyr's gun, was aiming not for the "Great Satan" or the United States, but at something more insidious and full of sin... his unknown face. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudo-psychology and bigotry offered at pop history
The thesis is that John Walker Lindh became a jihadist is because he was a self-hating homosexual.Astonishing.The Taliban didn't recruit a lot of gays, that I know of.The author also says that 50% of RC Clergy are gay and that the Middle Ages burned witches because gays hate women. It says some equally ridiculous things about Jews, Christians, Muslims-- and the whole thing is a rant and worthless to someone
looking to understand the extremist mind.I have found what I was looking for in Eric Hoffer's 60's manifesto, The True Believer. This book is truly awful.I often sell used books to Powell's in Portland, but this book I intend to toss in the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitious pop psychology
This book was disappointing. It did answer my basic questions about Lindh's childhood years, adolescence, and joining with Islamic extremists. The link between Lindh's political leanings and his alleged repressed homosexuality is intriguing. But do the authors have to repeat things over and over? The writing is amateurish. And what's the deal with Chapter 7, with the authors' diatribe against homosexuality and the American Psychological Association? This is certainly not a scholarly book, and is even questionable for an audience of laymen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hire a fact checker and an editor
The connection between religious fanatacism, repressed homosexuality, and self-hatred has a long an ugly history, and the authors make their case. But do they have to do it over and over and over and over again? Jeez! they clumsily revisit every point ad nauseum. On top of it all, their facts are a disaster. For example, they give historical background on Boy Taliban's hometown in Marin County, and state that its old Spanish Mission San Rafael was founded in 1681 (it was founded in 1817), and that those same missionaries enjoyed burning the Indians alive.I have studied California history my whole life, and have never, ever, ever, ever, read that, ever (Oh, do I repeat myself? That's a tic I developed after reading this book). As for clumsy, after giving useless detail about Marin County, they state that Boy Taliban liked playing with plastic Jedi warrior("Star Wars") figurines, yet failed to mention George Lucas and company are based in Marin County as well. So what was the point of local color when you forget the obvious? Later on, they talk about Islam's jehadi (jihad) warriors, and completely missed the opportunity for delicious irony...

1-0 out of 5 stars The most atrocious work I've ever read...
I'd be embarrassed to have my name on the cover of this book (and I'm NOT talking about Lindh!) Beyond even the topic of this book, I have several major issues. First of all, I cannot believe that Jess and Beck even have the gall to call themselves writers. They should go back to 1st grade and start again. This book was a joke, the most poorly written thing I've ever read in my life. Ever heard of an editor? Because I found more typos on the first page than I could count. Ever heard of writing clearly and concisely to get your point across without repeating yourself over and over? How about actual sentences, rather than endless fragments? Maybe you should find some concrete facts before accusing Lindh of unfounded allegations (i.e. his homosexuality, etc.) To potential readers: regardless of your own opinions of Lindh, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! It insults your own intelligence. I returned mine!

3-0 out of 5 stars Question up on question!
It raised questions about his parents. Why didn't they draw the lines? If I would be a Mom, I'd never let my Teenage- kid study in another Country but USA, especially not without a Highschool-
diploma. And is he now gay or not? If he would be, why did he write an E- Mail to his Mom about Family-life in Yemen and that he wants to build a house there and get married ( FOXNEWS ).And why did he write to his Parents "... I'm in safe hands now. "?(around Dec., after his capture)I hoped this book would answer questions about this case, instead it raised even more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great first opening book for beginners
I was a bit disappointed when I finally received it. I expected something that would help me to spot general mistakes in blitz games, but take my word for it, it's for the individuals who seek a book about basic traps in the king pawn games and beginning opening guidelines (castle early, advance only the center pawns, etc).

Nevertheless, it is an excellent and helpful book for the beginning individuals. It emphasizes the important concepts and the format is easy to read. It also tells of possible mistakes in the opening and how to basically take advantage of them. If this were the first opening book I read, I would be a better player today. This book is also recommended for those who teach chess, as it could serve as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tactics Book For Opening Play
This is the natural follow-on to Mr. Walker's OPENINGS FOR JUNIORS. Thiswork includes 34 well annotated short games (fewer than 25 moves) whichillustrate the teaching points in the first part of the book.Anadditional aid is the variety of openings and defenses these games present.

If a serious student of chess, with a rating below 1500, were to studythe games you will be prepared for most tournament competition with the oneglaring exception -- the Evan's Gambit. While not seen in every tournament, enough people still use this opening to have warranted it'sinclusion.

Still, the book is well worth the money to purchase and thetime to study. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars potentially useful survey of artists, but little else to offer
Left Shift professes to be a year-by-year analysis of left-wing British art in the 1970s, but it ends up promising more than it delivers. For starters, there's less sustained analysis here than you'll find in most Art History textbooks; instead, you get a near-endless stream of facts presented in overly simple prose (example: "One British artist who eventually died from Aids was Derek Jarman.").The year-by-year conceit is similarly disappointing, partly because Walker doesn't actually stick to it, preferring instead to somewhat arbitrarily assign artists to various years and then biographize them.Gilbert & George, for example, are strangely confined to 1972, COUM Transmissions 1976.I'll grant that any year-by-year book structure is inherently difficult to pull off coherently, but it's disapointing how little Left Shift attempts to use the basic idea of this structure - socio-economic history - to try and weave its facts together.Despite the book's interest in socially involved artists, each chapter largely avoids socio-historical synthesis. In lieu of that, we're offered a series of long and highly idiosyncratic lists of historical "events" of the kind published by print weeklies as "The Year in Review".

For all these faults, however, Left Shift is a useful survey of radical left-wing British artists and would likely be helpful to readers just setting off to explore this territory. For scholars in search of a comprehensive history or collection of critical arguments or approaches, however, this book leaves much to be desired.

4-0 out of 5 stars A shift to the left then a lurch to the right
Left shift provides a fascinating year by year analysis of how artists in the UK responded to left politics, women's liberation and the gay movement in the 70s. Many artists at this time were seeking to re-establish a social purpose.

Some of the work produced was truly innovative. The work of Brisley and the lifestyle adopted by the mavericks Gilbert and George crossed into performance. Brisley produced a disturbing effect:

"At Gallery House, Brisley converted a large room into a kind of filthy prison cell by splashing walls and windows with black and grey paint and covering the floor wity debris, dirt and slop water. He occupied the room for two weeks while living on a restricted diet and with no amusements or external communications."

"Clearly, the performance was a metaphor for the existentialist predicament of man, an isolated, nameless individual reduced to a National Insurance number and imprisoned in squalor, with no history and a future limited to survival. (p.72)

The boundaries of art were being stretched in other ways too. Artists were seeking to take art to new audiences with community art, art working within industry and agitprop art linked to social movements. As the author points out community art:

"reflected a strong desire on the part of many artists to escape from the isolation of the studio, the existing gallery system and its middle-class audience, in order to reach out to new audiences who either had no experience of the fine arts or were hostile to them." p.132

The motivation was clear. John Stezaker is quoted in regard to avant-garde artists but in fact his observations apply much more widely:

"The avant-garde artist has simply become a business man, wheeling and dealing in a restricted cultural circle and to a specialist clientele". p.76

The problem of absorbtion or incorporation runs as an understated theme throughout this history. Most art seems dependant on the indulgences of Capitalists (Alistair McAlpine and the Saatchis being obvious examples. Most of what is left is funded from public money dispensed by groups like the Arts Council.

The arrival of video "challenged the monopoly of existing broadcasting institutions and, by enabling children and laypeople to use video equipment, the medium and technology of television were demystified. Thus, the passive consumption of television was replaced or supplemented by the active production of images." p.151

Or didn't as it turned out. Even where grants or the grace and favour of wealthy patrons played no part the corrupting pull of the market made itself felt:

"As in the case of so much photomontage art of the 1970s, radical film and video often had a love/hate relationship with mainstream media because they were the dominant forms of communication and because they provided - if access could be obtained without compromising artistic integrity - the opportunity to reach a much wider, non-art world audience." p.152

How far "artistic integrity" had been compromised during the 70s is not really seriously examined. There are, however, few examples of outright censorship documented - one of the few being the closure of the Art Theory course in 1973 at Coventry. This might indicate a suprising liberality or it might show that the process of funding art or its relationship with the market were themselves enough to ensure that any questioning of the status quo was within clearly understood boundaries.

There are a few areas where I feel radical art broke out of the box. Jamie Reid: "the man who more than any other created the cut-and-paste graphic-guerilla style associated with the punk era, particularly in his record sleeves for the Sex Pistols"according to Esquire (June 2002) did communicate to new audiences. His work is briefly considered in Left Shift but others working in the same field are not on the basis that that David Laing and Jon Savage have already done so.

We all come from somewhere

What I find interesting is that Left Shift places Reid in a context. He came from somewhere (as all we opponents of capitalism do):

"Reid,s activities during the first half of the 1970s can be considered part of the community arts movement that was then gathering momentum having started in the 1960s. The Surburban Press was only one of many such small, alternative printing presses, phoyography and poster workshops. Community art, of course, was defined and limited by its local character. However, in Reid's case, the advent of punk enabled his experience of community publishing, printing, politics and agit-prop graphics to find a new lease of life in one of capitalism's most powerful cultural industries - the music business - consequently, his ideas, images and slogans were to reach a huge, transatlantic audience." pp. 42-43

I was disappointed that Left Shift did not analyse mass art more. I remember the late 70s as a time of people wearing badges, and political posters, graffiti and stickers of both Left and Right (in the form of the National Front) being highly visible. I recall attempts to subvert commercial adverts (by both feminists and racists) by blanking words out to change meaning or adding words with spray-paint. There was an excitement, a confrontation and a buzz going on. Left Shift is interesting and well documented but it doesn't get the feeling of the period over to me.

Ultimately in order to judge whether any real challenge had been made by the Left in the 70s we should consider what happened next. As the author points out "the shift to the Left in the British art world during the 1970s was not sustained during the following two decades." p.253 Politically, there was in fact a lurch to the Right with the election of Thatcher in 1979. The reasons for this are briefly examined but the knowledge of outcome should have led the author to re-examine far more the long-term significance (or lack of it) of Left art in the 70s. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for introduction
This book will improve your play.
Walker goes through step by step how to improve your game.
He starts by making sure that you understand basic tactics, then where others go to openings he goes straight for the end game. By using this approach he shows you how to win from established positions. Once again it is about tactics.
From here he moves to openings, he gives you standard openings, then explains the principles behind them, once again it is tactics.

I strongly reccomend this book especially to beginners and average players, but I beleive that everyone will come away with something from it

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best for Improving Players
I am a strong (A) player with a large library of quality books.I purchased this one to use in teaching my friends the joys of this ancient game without scaring them off with reams of variations. The beauty of this book is that it presents the most essential chess concepts in a manner that will not scare off newer students to the game.I especially enjoy how the book starts with the endings and tactics and then progresses to strategy.

I am a HUGE fan of Tarrasch's the Game of Chess and Lasker's famous Manual--however both of these works are quite verbose and will not foster a love from the game in most newbies.Get this book and use it to teach your friends how to play a solid game of chess.Get this and use it in combination with some of the classics (may I suggest art of the middlegame?) and begin the climb to expert status! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The "BestEver" Intro Book for a Overview of Hospitality!
I have been teaching the college lever intro course for well over 20 years.I have used many text and supplemented same. John's book is succinct, well written and dosen't bore you with trivia.Students thinking about a career in hospitality are interested in finding out all they can in a short period of time what the hospitality industry has to offer. Walker's book, I have used as Department Chair at two colleges, is still the best book on the market. John quickly exposes the unsuspecting student
to a array of opportunities that many of them never thought that they could get to via a career in the hospitality industry. The stero typical notion of HRIM Majors being "Burger Flippers" is quickly dispelled when John's book is used along with supplemental material demonstrating further connections to many facets of the service industry.

I thank John Walker many times over for his diligence in keeping consistent the material with regular updates. Other books are good, but John's is the best.Afer more than 44 times of teaching this class, I will stick with John's text.It is an sperb read for those who are either beginning a career or who may be searching for a place to start. It also ties in nicely with other courses that often capture a readers interest to continue on and seek out more information. It is a great recruitment tool if used well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Cinema List to Argue Over But a Relatively Thoughtful, Well-Presented One
One could argue endlessly with the final list presented in this voluminous 2005 book which begins with the preferences of the late British film historian Leslie Halliwell and continues to be replenished with the viewpoint of British film critic John Walker. The result is a good though hardly definitive list of feature films starting with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" at #1,000 and tackling the list backwards. The bottom half, in particular, is full of head-scratching entries like "Starship Troopers", "The Hot Rock" and "Fourteen Hours", but the list gains more credence as you move up the ranks.

The editors identify Yasujiro Ozu's quiet 1953 masterpiece, "Tokyo Story" as #1, and I happen to support the selection given the film's amazing emotional resonance. Of particular interest are the top ten lists provided by leading film directors and scholars from around the world. Most of their choices are worthy, though some are proudly idiosyncratic like Quentin Tarantino including the 1973 Pam Grier blaxploitation star vehicle, "Coffy". At the very least, Walker and his team provide a valuable service in introducing or reminding people the great variety of fine films to see on DVD and consequently fill their Netflix queues. The book is well-organized and formatted, making it fun for film fanatics to peruse.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This book is not very good. For starters, a lot of great movies are place WAAY in the back. The list is good, but the ranking is way off.Not only that, but Toy Story is #25!That movie is a good one but I wouldn't even have included it in my personal Top 100 list.

5-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE READ
I got this book as a gift and have been delving into it for days because it is SO interesting and informed.

The layout is colourful but easy to read and the top 1000, according to Richard Halliwell's film-expert partner,is inclusive and there are some surprises - such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (original version)- being included as #1000.

There are quotes on many of the selected movies by respected critics such as Roger Ebert, Rex Reed, Judith Crist, Pauline Kael, etc.

For film buffs and aficionados of the obscure or those films hard to find, this book is for you because many of the selections are definitely for very precise tastes.

There are also lists of top ten movies by various directors, producers, technical people that are also interesting to glean.

A recommended book for all lovers of good cinema.
