Editorial Review

Book Description
"In 1984, Jasper Johns suggested to an interviewer that he had made a critical shift in his working process. ""In my early work,"" he said, ""I tried to hide my personality, my psychological state, my emotions...I sort of stuck to my guns for a while, but eventually it seemed like a losing battle. Finally, one must simply drop the reserve."" His paintings of the 1980s and 90s bear this out: their imagery often includes objects and locations in his present studio and home, as well as allusions to memories of his childhood. These motifs are reiterated, altered, reworked and quoted in the context of new compositions, forming layered and complex spaces of recollection that merge past and present. This profusely illustrated volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings organized by the Walker Art Center, is the first to look broadly at this period in Johns' career. All of the artist's major bodies of work from the past two decades--including those based on the Seasons, Green Angel and Catenary motifs--are covered in this study, with special consideration given to imagery appropriated from Picasso and Manet. Many of the works are published here for the first time, making this an invaluable tool for the study of Johns' work." ... Read more

Amazon.com
The list of master artists whose work is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, seems endless. This massive volume contains rich color reproductions of works by Pollock, Brancusi, Cezanne, Picasso, and hundreds of other artists. The arrangement of the paintings and sculptures shows a strong curatorial hand, for often the works of two or more artists are mingled to illustrate the impact of one artist on another. To enhance the experience of leafing through this book, John Walker, director emeritus of the museum, places the artists and their work in historical, artistic, and social context with concise, revealing essays. Walker also discusses the inception and evolution of the gallery as well as the collecting habits and tastes of its major benefactors, people such as Andrew Mellon and Chester Dale. This book is an excellent companion to the museum and an wonderful addition to any art lover's collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent critique of masterpieces
anyone wanting to understand what makes great art great should study this book. this collection includes tasteful and insightful comments about numerous paintings. this book is invaluable to me as an aspiring artist

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reproductions & informative text!
This big, beautiful book should be on any art lover's shelf!A treasury of reproductions of the world's best art is contained here. The reproductions are excellent; colors are preserved in all their glory.Walker's text is informative & interesting. The next best thing to actually visiting the National Gallery is owning this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich selection of works from a great national treasure
This is a large book full of pictures of beautiful artworks. While there are some photos of sculpture and some of drawings, the bulk of what is reproduced here is painting. While many pages have multiple artworks, there are also quite a few where the painting is given a full page for more close observation and study.

The quality of the reproductions is quite good, if not quite superb. The captions and text describing the art and artists are very good and most helpful for the general reader. The book opens with several articles on the National Gallery and its history and policies.

The plates are organized chronologically and by the national schools of their times. The earliest artworks are circa the 13th century and concludes with works of the 20th century.

You could spend many days enjoying this glorious selection of art and still find many more days of study before you exhaust all that is offered in this fine book about a great national treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!
This is a beautiful book! The color plates are very nice and are good representations of the actual paintings.Brief histories are also presented.I bought it after my first visit to the National Gallery of Art and before my second visit.I enjoyed the second visit much more because I felt that I really knew what was going on with the artists and paintings.Get the book and then go to the National Gallery of Art!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book is one of my favorites, and has been for many years. Its beautiful color illustrations are grouped by the period and country in which they were created. The book presents works (mostly paintings) from many countries (mostly Western) beginning in the Byzantine era, extending up until the early twentieth century. Many of the works are accompanied by art historical abstracts which offer insight for both the inexperienced and learned art enthusiast. This is a great book to have around as an extensive survey of Western painting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Burroughs at his best!
This is the anthology readers and scholars of John Burroughs (1837-1921) have been waiting for. Charlotte Walker, a professor of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta, has gathered selections from Burroughs's vast oeuvre and assembled them in a handsome volume. The words are set in modern type, and the subject matter is as fresh and timely as ever. Burroughs is often remembered as a naturalist, but he was much more than that: a perceptive and accessible literary critic, a philosopher, a radical thinker who advocated the overthrow of traditional religions in favor of an open-eyed nature worship steeped in science and wonder. Earlier anthologies of Burroughs's work have tended to ignore or suppress his thorny and provocative side, but Walker gives us the man in all his dimensions. As the author of a concise biography of Burroughs, I was pleased to open this collection and find it crowded with favorites---philosophical essays such as "Faith of a Naturalist," travel pieces such as "A Hunt for the Nightingale," an excerpt from "Our Rural Divinity" (about the dairy cow!), perceptive criticism of Emerson and Thoreau, studies of Catskill farm life, and more. This book makes a fine addition to any library and offers the best intorduction to Burroughs in print. Bravo! Highly recommended! ... Read more

Book Description
Within the intelligence community, Bob Hunter is known as the agent who caught master spy John Walker and brought an end to what many top officials call the most damaging espionage ring in U.S. history. Hunter, a foreign counterintelligence agent for the FBI, was the lead investigator on the case. His book presents an insider's account of the detection, pursuit, and capture of the U.S. Navy communications expert and his partners in espionage. He writes from a unique perspective--no one else was involved with the case from beginning to end--and he allows the reader not only behind the scenes but into his mind as he plots his course of action.

Although we know the outcome, this is a first-rate mystery story that pits the hunter against the hunted in a benchmark case against which all others are measured. It offers a front-row seat to history in the making as it reveals, with the accuracy and attention to detail only this author could provide, the events that led to Walker's arrest. That arrest at a motel in Maryland brought an abrupt halt to eighteen years of spying activities. In an unprecedented breach of Navy security, Walker had sold more than one million secrets to the Russians--vital information on codes, ship movements, weaponry, tactics, and plans so crucial that a top KGB official called the ring the most important operation in the KGB's history.

Walker's elaborate spy network included his son, who was a seaman on a nuclear aircraft carrier; his brother; and his best friend. This book is the first to discuss in detail the interviews with his wife (who first put the FBI onto the case) and his brother, and to explain why the agency never believed the brother told the entire truth about his involvement. This is the first book to include interviews with the KGB general who supervised Walker and with the judges and prosecutors involved in the case. It is also the only book to offer a close-up look at how the investigation was conducted and what the lead investigator was thinking as he attempted to bring down one of the biggest traitors in U.S. history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, accurate read!
As a former sailor and current resident of Virginia Beach, I was stunned to learn that much of this entire story happened in familiar places surrounding me.The author spares no details and does not hesitate to give addresses, places, names, etc. to make the story come to life.

I readthis book over a weekend because I simply could not put it down.I enjoythe way the story was told. Our country should thank the FBI, Bob Hunter, and his team for their professionalism in catching America's most damagingspy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Excellenttrue spy story from the justics side of the case.Other books ont his case don't cover this much at all.The author (and case agent) is agood, unpretentious storyteller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping True Spy Story
Espionage stories like this are usually fiction! The author tells his story in a casual way, like he's talking to you personally over a glass of ale. He's a character himseld!

1-0 out of 5 stars Good agent- not so good author!
Having read few earlier books on this subject and served on-board a nuclear powered submarine during John Walker's "active years", I had high expectations for this book. I was disappointed! The book seemed tobe simply an "off the cuff" recollection of the author's verysignificant experience with this case. It was a very surface, rambling treatment of a very complex story.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent factual insider recounting of true spy case
The author is the FBI agent in charge of this spy case, who actually arrested Walker and was present at trials and debriefings. It is the only actual insider book about the investigation.Hunter is the FBI counterintelligemnce agent who holds the record for the most spy convictions ever. Very exciting stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing reading
I love this book. Dryden finds the way to write about really complicated topics in a way that is very clear (and clever).

5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring Dryden
John Dryden is one of those poets who everyone respects and nobody reads. His public poetry often seems out of place to modern readers as he bashes his now obscure enemies and recalls long since forgotten political events. Yet Dryden was the leading figure in British literature for a number of decades. There's a reason for this. He was the master of the heroic couplet and few figures were more influential in taking literature to the common readers.

The Oxford World's Classics edition is excellent. Most of the major poems are there though "The Hind and the Panther" is excluded. This is the most personal of Dryden's poems and you simply can not understand the poet's conversion to Catholicism without it. It is as if the editors prefered to reinforce the common perception that Dryden is the least personal of poets. The introduction needs to be fleshed out and the endnotes are not accesable (they really should have included footnotes). Even worse, Dryden's plays are neglected. Still, one has to concede this is the most accesable version of Dryden out there and this redeems a great deal of its flaws.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Poetry, Mediocre Editing
The blurb's claim that this edition includes all of Dryden's major original poems is not quite true. "The Hind and the Panther", the long and very important poem which marked Dryden's conversion to Catholicism, has unaccountably been left out. This omission would have made this edition worthless if there were any other affordable editions of Dryden.

An irritating feature of the editing is the relentless modernisation, which obscures the metre by dropping elision markers, and spoils the rhyme by respelling "wrack" as "wreck" etc. It is doubtful whether Dryden needs modernisation at all, but it seems unlikely that spelling out "Int'rest" as "interest" or "th'offence" as "the offence" is likely to help any reader.

As for the poetry. Dryden is an exceptionally readable and entertaining poet; his very natural style makes him much more accessible than Milton or Pope. Like Pope, he is a great verse satirist who writes in couplets, but the two poets are otherwise not very similar. Dryden's couplets are less close-packed or self-contained than Pope's, but they move more swiftly and are more energetic. Dryden, unlike Pope, uses the triplet quite often as an amplifying device, and many of his best lines are in triplets:

"I am as free as Nature first made man,
Ere the base laws of servitude began,
When wild in woods the noble savage ran."

"Thy generous fruits, though gather'd ere their prime
Still show'd a quickness; and maturing time
But mellows what we write to the dull sweets of rhyme."

"A fiery soul, which, working out its way,
Fretted the pygmy-body to decay,
And o'er-inform'd the tenement of clay."

This type of verse is fairly typical of Dryden: the statement is direct, unambiguous and forceful; in T.S. Eliot's words, "Dryden states immensely". Dryden's satire is much more like caricature than Pope's; his characters are monstrous and misshapen giants, while Pope's are amazingly realistic dwarves. This is the Dryden note:

With all this bulk there's nothing lost in Og,
For ev'ry inch that is not fool is rogue:
A monstrous mass of foul corrupted matter,
As all the devils had spew'd to make the batter.

The difference is one of genre. Pope's poetry is an idealisation of the letter; Dryden's of the speech or sermon. Therefore, Pope is intimate and delicate, while Dryden is energetic and sonorous. Of course, this is a generalisation; my point is just that they are very different in their methods, and that to expect Dryden to be like Pope (or the other way around) is probably a bad way to start.

Dryden is notable for much more than his satires. His religious poems are very fine; so are his translations, especially of Lucretius, Juvenal, Horace (Ode 3.29), Boccaccio and Virgil. (His version of the Aeneid is probably the best we have in English.) So are his two St. Cecilia's Day songs and the Ode on Killigrew, and especially the splendid elegy "To the Memory of Mr Oldham". And his critical essays, from the "Essay on Dramatic Poesy" to the preface to "Fables", apart from being the first great literary criticism in English, is often very acute and is always written engagingly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A filing cabinet condensed into a book
This book is a must-have if you are designing HF magnetics, highly useful if you are seriously applying them, and still useful but probably not needed if you are just buying parts and plunking them on a PCB.This book is a collection of papers from the classic to the recent. The oldest was published in 1944, some are from the 1950s through 70s, but most were published in the last 20 years or so, when the rise of computer based modeling began to fuel innovation in the field.Because so much of this literature is scattered through various journals, magazines, and conference records, the fact that someone with a good eye for what is relevant has done the work to collect it all into a single volume is a great service. The fact that the articles range from classic windings-on-a-core transformers to baluns to microstrip give the book a breadth and continuity that enhances the value of the collection. However, many of the papers are highly theoretical. For the most part, this is not a how-to cookbook of readily adaptable designs. Some of the papers are trade magazine articles that emphasize practical results, and there are some manufacturer application notes, such as the inclusion of Motorola (Freescale) AN-758 "A Two Stage 1kW Solid State Linear Amplifier" that can as easily be pulled off the web. You also have such gems as the original papers by Wilkinson, Ruthroff, Guanella, and Marchand on the popular devices called by their names.Altogether, if you want something that you can pull off your shelf to learn at least something about almost any aspect of combiners, couplers, and transformers from HF through microwaves, this book will meet the need almost every time.If you are writing any sort of academic paper in this area, here you have a bibliography in a book.Highly recommended -- if you're sufficiently deep into these types of devices.

5-0 out of 5 stars first class collection
This is a collection of reprints of famous magazine and journal articles about passive devices used in RF designs that are hard to find.It is arranged in sections with a summary preceding the reprints.

The classic papers vary in clearness. The ones from trade magazines are short on theory but very practical for designers. The ones from scientific journals are very compactly written and may be hard to follow by some engineers. ... Read more

I was hoping for more family history with this book. I've been looking for years for Pres. Tyler's parents, his father's siblings and forward ancestry, in hopes to open a snag I have in my mom's Tyler line, as her ggrandfather was a first cousin to Pres. Tyler, as my grandfather and siblings often stated. Maybe this John and mom's ggranfathers were brothers or their fathers were connected. I just need a better lineage.
Thanks,
