Product Description
In 1984, Jasper Johns suggested to an interviewer that he had made a critical shift in his working process. "In my early work," he said, "I tried to hide my personality, my psychological state, my emotions...I sort of stuck to my guns for a while, but eventually it seemed like a losing battle. Finally, one must simply drop the reserve." His paintings of the 1980s and 90s bear this out: their imagery often includes objects and locations in his present studio and home, as well as allusions to memories of his childhood. These motifs are reiterated, altered, reworked and quoted in the context of new compositions, forming layered and complex spaces of recollection that merge past and present. This profusely illustrated volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings organized by the Walker Art Center, is the first to look broadly at this period in Johns' career. All of the artist's major bodies of work from the past two decades--including those based on the Seasons, Green Angel and Catenary motifs--are covered in this study, with special consideration given to imagery appropriated from Picasso and Manet. Many of the works are published here for the first time, making this an invaluable tool for the study of Johns' work.Edited by Joan Rothfuss.~Essays by Richard Shiff, Victor Stoichita, ~Foreword by Kathy Halbreich.Hardcover, 8.5 x 11 in./144 pgs / 80 color 0 BW0 duotone 0 ~ Item D20257 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material and topic coverage.
This book is well-written, and does not waste the reader's time with useless, off-topic, or wordy writing.John Walker does an excellent job explaining different machines and processes as well as what items may be produces from those machines and processes.Very worthy reading or reference material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well-detailed.
This is an excellent resource for someone who is just getting into machining work. I come from a CAD design background and wanted to know more about the actual processes of production, as well as tools used, etc. Thebook does a really solid job of covering everything from the proper use ofa hammer to giving an overview of modern "high-tech" machiningprocesses using lasers, water saws and so on. Many pictures and exceptionaldiagrams help to explain the text quite clearly. Done in textbook formatwith questions at the end of each chapter. It should be noted that whilethis is an overview of an immense amount of information, I though it did apretty good job of being detailed and thorough on each subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good starters book for understanding the basics.
An easy to understand basic machining book.Good for introducing the various types of machines and associated tooling.Written for the classroom, with questions at the end of each chapter to reinforce what you have read.No techniques or how to stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Machinining Fundamentals
Dear: Mr. WalkerI am an instructor of Machining Technology and have used and studied your textbooks for a long time I wish to complimnet you on the latest edition of machining fundamentals, the text is super with the color illistrations and layout this was exactly what I was looking for in a textbook. the student workbook is also of good quality. however the instructors guide is beyond compare it is one of the best instructors guides that I have ever seen including the masters. the only complant that I have is with the testing software it is far better than nothing but is far below what I would have expected from you. you could have at least made it a Windows based program that is more user frendly and flexable for the instructor to use and edit to their pacific needs. Their is too many limits on the abilities of the software to use fonts, printers, layout of the test.ect. What I would like to see in the future editions is an improvement on the software maybe even include the text, illistrations, text questions, and a lot more project prints that relate to the text and program that will allow the students to be more compedent in the shop. Thank you for your time and effort. Thomas C. Leckey ... Read more

The list of master artists whose work is housed in theNational Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, seems endless. This massivevolume contains rich color reproductions of works by Pollock,Brancusi, Cezanne, Picasso, and hundreds of other artists. Thearrangement of the paintings and sculptures shows a strong curatorialhand, for often the works of two or more artists are mingled toillustrate the impact of one artist on another. To enhance theexperience of leafing through this book, John Walker, directoremeritus of the museum, places the artists and their work inhistorical, artistic, and social context with concise, revealingessays. Walker also discusses the inception and evolution of thegallery as well as the collecting habits and tastes of its majorbenefactors, people such as Andrew Mellon and Chester Dale. 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive work
This is a truly stunning book on the works in our most important art gallery. Overall quality of the reproductions is excellent, and the explanatory text is very helpful, and aimed at the intelligent beginner level. You could learn a lot about art history just by perusing this book and reading the material on your favorite artists, or your favorite period, such as the Impressionists, the high Renaissance, or the Dutch masters. If you actually read it cover to cover, you'll know a lot. Organized chronologically, this makes it easy to use. The book mainly covers paintings, but the museum has a fair amount of scuplture too, but I don't know if there's a book that covers that. Perhaps that book would be on the Hirschorn Museum, which is the part of the Smithsonian that has the sculpture. I recently had the chance to visit the National Gallery again after 30 years, and I was equally impressed just as I was the first time. If you were to read this book before your visit, you'd probably know enough to do your own personal tour. Although not cheap, this is a great book on our greatest art gallery.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE...USEFUL AND EDUCATIONAL.BEAUTIFULLY DONE
By nature, I am not overly fond of "coffee table books."I do own quite a number but seldom do they ever find a place on any of my coffee tables; rather, they are stored on shelves with the rest of the bookish flotsam I have collected over the years.Of the four books that I do have out in the open, this is one of them.If nothing else, it is so large (696 very oversized pages) that it could be used as a defensive weapon if needed...if of course you could lift the thing. Now that being said:

I have spent many hours reading through this wonderful collection of primarily paintings found in our National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.These paintings start with offerings from the Byzantine era and work there way through in chronological order up until the early 20th Century. Each painting has been very well photographed (more about that later) and is accompanied by a brief description and vital statistics such as measurements, artist, surface used, era, year painted (if known) and date of birth and death of the artist, etc.The book offers compact briefs on many of the paintings and quite a bit of history can be gleaned from these numerous offerings.

Now no book of photographs of paintings can come anywhere near equaling the quality or impact of seeing the work of art first hand...in the original.I don't care how good the photography is...it just is not going to happen. But if you are an individual like myself who does not have accesses to these paintings (I have never visited the National Gallery and have no intension of doing so in this life time), then photographs are the next best thing. The paintings represented here are well done.I have seen better quality in books which are more specialized, but for the massive number of works represented here, I am quite satisfied.Yes, many of the paintings posted here would be much better represented if the prints were larger but of course there are limits on such things. You get a very good idea of what each school of art is trying to represent and a good insight to the artist's work.

Reading and browsing through this work year after year, month after month, gives the reader a sort of mini art history/appreciation lesson and much can be learned.I find myself reaching for this thing more than I care to admit to and simply enjoying brief moments with each and every page.Like another reviewer here, this is one of my favorite books to kill time with and I always walk away a bit richer for the time I spend with it.

The neatest thing about this work is that you do not have to be an art expert to appreciate and enjoy it.The test is not made up of the pretentious clap-trap you so often run into with books of art.So often you run into books of this ilk which read more like wine reviews; filled with ramblings which no one has a clue as to their meaning but fear to say so because they do not want to appear unwashed, uneducated and uncouth.I like simplicity in this sort of thing and the fewer obscure adjectives, the better.

All in all, this is a book worth owning.I treasure my copy. (Note:If one of my kids happens to read this review, be aware that most of the pages are annotated with my scribbling and the resale of this work will be nil, so you might as well keep it and enjoy it because you certainly are not going to get much out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riches beyond belief
Anyone with an interest in art should add this book to his/her library. But it is not the book that is important, also.It is the wonder of a visit to the National Gallery of Art in Washington that was the reward of having purchased this book and invested the time to study it intently instead of just putting it on a coffee table to gather comments. Our country has a treasure. The National Gallery of Art.If one cannot visit, one can experience it through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed with the Smithsonian
This compilation does an excellent job of displaying well-defined pieces of art from the Smithsonian, many of which may be discontinued or moved elsewhere. The author does an excellent job of respecting each work and giving a good back ground of major works and their creators, honoring the historic reference, and subject matter of each piece.

Excellent, classy, "heavy" coffee table or reading room piece for enlightenment.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent critique of masterpieces
anyone wanting to understand what makes great art great should study this book. this collection includes tasteful and insightful comments about numerous paintings. this book is invaluable to me as an aspiring artist ... Read more

I am very happy with the book. The pages are black and white, which I don't think I was made aware of at purchase, but it is not a big deal. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Guide
I used the 5e/International Edition of the book "Marketing Strategy: A Decision-Focused Approach" which has the advantage of being compact in text but meaningful in the approach to present the knowledge that you need know for the daily marketing practise. It helps to endeavor the core concepts of marketing strategy with a clear language and "short" (compact) passages. If you have to study in length this book works only as references but if you are looking for an overview this book will serve you well with sections divided in "Introduction of Strategy", "Opportunity Analysis", "Formulating Marketing Strategies and Implementation and Control". Furthermore this book uses company cases (3M, Iomega's Zip, IBM etc.) to introduce new topics and allow for every chapter to have a rich reference guide to second literature. If you combine this book with other literature like (Kotler/Keller,Marketing Management (12th Edition) (Marketing Management) ; Kerin/Peterson,Strategic Marketing Problems: Cases and Comments (11th Edition)), it will complement the study of marketing strategy well. ... Product Description
Can fine art survive in an age of mass media? If so, in what forms and to what purpose? These are the challenging questions addressed in this thoroughly revised, updated and expanded edition of "Art in the Age of Mass Media", as John Walker examines the fascinating relationship between art and mass media, and the myriad interactions between high and low culture in a postmodern, culturally pluralistic world.

Using a range of historic and contemporary works of art to illustrate theoretical points, Walker explores the variety of ways in which modern artists have responded to the arrival of new, mass media. He ranges from the socialist paintings of Courbet to the anti-Nazi photomontages of Heartfield, from community murals and Keith Haring's use of graffiti to the kitsch self-promotion associated with Jeff Koons. The new edition describes what happened during the 1990s, including Toscani's adverts for Benetton, the simulations of Leeds 13, art and cinema, Damien Hirst, and the cyberart currently being produced for the internet. "Art in the Age of Mass Media" is an invaluable introduction to the continuing debates between high art and low culture for students of media and cultural studies and art history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Art in Society
Art is a social institution. So it can't be insulated from social influences. Artists are sellers in market. They earn their bread by selling their products, artworks.
Art is a language shared by social actors. Artworks can't be read without shared code to interpret the meaning of the text. They call it as convention. Convention is established through the power relationship in the market among producer (artists), intermediary (critics) and consumer (audience).
In this regard, art is just another medium like mass media. The author questions when the mass media dominates the culture, what is the status of pure art? In this vein, following questions, which have haunted the field of artistic production since the 19th century, gains renewed significance. Could art secure its autonomy as modernists dreamt of? What is the social role of art?
To answer those questions, the author probes into the language and market of visual art from pop art to postmodernism. Various avant-garde movements since pop art has borrowed and exploited material, subject and strategy of mass media. In turn, mass culture has utilized the art as high culture. But the position of pure art is still restricted to institutionalized sanctuary like museum, university. It's no more than high culture protected from below. It's utilized to distinguish from others by high society. It's not clear whether artwork is different from luxury goods in its utility. Adorno's word still reverberates in the circle of artists: "Today, it goes without saying that nothing concerning art goes without saying, not much without thinking. Everything about art has become problematic: its inner life, its relation to society, even its right to exist". ... Read more
