4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun read for kids on vacation!
This is a delightful book from the series by Henry Winkler. My grandson is autistic--but has a wonderful sense of humor (he draws his own cartoons). He also participates in drama camp -- so even though this was a little below his reading level, I knew he would love the character and the circumstances surrounding the story. He did-- so I consider this a good summer read for kids.As a former English teacher, I believe that reading fun things develops both imagination and skill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive for kids learning from each other.
I really like these books. Hank learns he can learn from other kids. Kids can sometimes learn better from other kids because they have a closer point of view on things. I really like that the know-it-all girl learns she can really learn from someone like Hank and be better for it. In real life I have paired LD with Gifted students and had something like this really happen, each learns something from the other. I do wish the dad would learn that LD students really do have to work harder and take small steps to get the better grades. Why doesn't Hank get some help in his school to get better? All schools are supposed to have some sort of classes to help these students learn how to see things like Hank learned using the library books with peer tutoring. Even with these problems as I see them, I really do like the books and the message they send about how you can learn even if you learn a different way to see the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars All of life is a stage for Hank Zipzer
This is a great series, it does an amazing job of capturing the experience of living and growing up with learning disabilities. Henry Winkler admits that he himself has a form of dyslexia. However this is the second book with a glaring continuity error, and it is beginning to bother me. In Book 10 My Dog's a Scaredy-Cat: A Halloween Tail it states that Hank never got above C's he saysthat his "grades have only ever traveled to C-ville and parts south". In this book on p.3 Hank states that "A C-Minus was a step up for me. I usually live in D-Ville." Yet in book 8 Summer School? What Genius Thought That Up? He got an A+ on his oral presentation. There is also a second incident in this book whwre he states he never got A's. The continuity error being missed a second time by editors and proof readers is disappointing. However setting that aside this is another wonderful adventure for Hank and his friends at PS 87(Public School 87).

In this story Hank wants' to try out for the role of the King of Siam, in the school's adaptation of the play Anna and the King, but he has just flunked a math test and started peer tutoring. His father only allows him to try out for the play if he agrees he will get a B+ on his next math test. If he does not achieve this mark and has got a spot in the play, he will have to drop out. As we can tell from the title it sounds like he made it but how many trials does he have to overcome to make it. Follow Hank as he get's to know Heather Payne as both a peer tutor and friend, and maybe Hank can teach Heather a thing or two, read and find out.

I had ordered 16 books from Amazon, from various book sellers, for my grandchildren's visit this summer.I had a change of address at about the same time, which resulted in a big mess.Out of the 16, the post office forwarded to me only five.Out of the remaining 11, you were the only seller that offered and did reship!Thank you so much for your diligents and kindness in reshipiing free of charge. The book is in excellent condition and your customer service is excellent. I will certainly remember you in the future.Thank you again.

5-0 out of 5 stars too bad this is the last Hank Zipzer
My 11 yr ADHD & LD daughter will be in 6th gr 8/2010.We stumbled on Hank Zipzer in 2009, & she became an instant fan.I very much enjoy them myself when she reads aloud to me from the back seat of the car while we are riding, or when she comes to tell me a funny part of the tale she is reading to herself. The 17 bks in the series average about 150 pgs & are easy fun reading. They were well below her reading level as a 4th & 5th grader, however, she read them & loved them because of the kinship she felt w/a character with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder & learning challenges, & because of the entertainment value. The bks are funny & easy to "zip" through. She had read #s 1-7 by 12/2009 & received #s 8-11 for Christmas &/or bday 12/2009.She squeezed these into free time reading in the 1st few mths of 2010, & then received #s 12-17 as part of an end of school gift. Those last 6 bks in the series were finished in a matter of about a wk's time before the end of May!She is so disappointed that the series has ended. She has enjoyed not only the bks, but also the associated website w/fun activiites & author interviews & video. She has enjoyed learning about Henry Winkler's personal story of school troubles & learning issues & how he came to write the bks as a parent, as well as his early stardom as "The Fonz".We entered the drawing @ our local bkstore, hoping to win the honor of having him speak @ her school's middle school graduation, in conjunction w/Hank's graduation from middle school in the last bk of the series.Unfortunately we did not win. These bks would appeal to any early elementary age boy or girl with or without ADHD & LD.Read & enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry Winkler, please continue this series!!
My son with learning challenges absolutely loves Hank Zipzer. He can relateto so many of Hank's struggles. This series has been such a motivator for him. We read the first several books aloud, but now my son is actually reading them on his own. This is a huge thing for him. I hope there will be at least 17 more in the series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greak Book Great Series
Hank Zipzer, the world's greatest underachiever, is back at it again. In this seventeenth book in the series, we again encounter Hank towards the end of a school year, and again Hank is in the position of not finishing. This time it is because he has failed to complete his community service requirement. The biggest difference between this book and earlier books in the series is that Hank starts to see something in himself, some potential for something other than failure. He realizes this with the help of Mr. Rock, the school music teacher who helps him explore this new side. Soon he is practicing monologues, improv, and characterization. He has set his goals on auditioning for the Professional School of Performing Arts. Yet, as usual, he needs to convince his father to let him try out, and if he gets it, to go. Hank is desperate to succeed as his two best friends are going to the Enhanced Science program, and he does not want to be left without them or something special himself.

These books are very well written. In the last year I have read or re-read 16 of the 17 in the series. They keep my attention, and are fun and enjoyable to read. The humour is age appropriate. As someone with dyslexia, these stories do an amazing job of capturing the experience of living with, and learning to deal with, learning disabilities. They are great reads just as books, but for young people with learning disabilities or people close to them, they will provide encouragement and support also. ... Read more
