Any one who has had occasion to direct the study of young men preparing for the duties of the profession, must, in the course of his practice, have encountered the difficulty, on the one hand, of inducing students to extend their researches after the principles of their profession into the intricacies of the higher calculus, and, on the other hand, of contenting himself with the very limited discussion of principles, found in many works which have been hitherto employed to give the desired basis for pro fessional knowledge... ...
