5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I bought this book for a photo class, and I barely used it, but it's still an interesting book. I enjoyed it

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Choice
I did not like this book at all.For starters, the printed Images, are of such poor quality that, for a photography book, it belies belief. This is the sort of book that could be written by anyone willing to spend the time "Googleing" for some information.Do not compound yor error, by purchasing Kim Mosely's companion volume "Workbook for Black & White Photography".It is merely a litany of questions the answers for which are presumably in Horenstein's Basic Manual. It might be useful to a High School Photography teacher using his book, but I cannot imagine any photography teacher using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
its an amazing book! especially for beginners. I am a photography student and this is our text book. If you want to start learning manual black n white camera then this is the book you want in your bookshelf. It teaches basics of photography including step by step film processing and developing. If you are a photographer or interested in learning manual black n white photography, this is the book you should definitely buy

4-0 out of 5 stars OK introduction
Covers the basics of camera, negative and print for the absolute beginner with no technical inclinations. If you are an analytical personality with a little technical education, you will miss the math. I want the equation for depth of field! I want the grain size in mm! But that's just me ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
A Basic Manual, 3rd Edit Revised is an excellent resource for the new (film) photographer. I'd also argue its not a half-bad general resource for the more experienced photographer.I used his previous version in an introductory course in black and white photography that I taught for a number ofyears.Of late I have been using Mastering Black and White Photography byBernhard Suess but will now switch back to this text.Student response to both texts has been overwhelmingly positive however I feel Horenstein's writing style iseasier for them to follow. The sequence, illustrations and figures of the Horenstein book seem both logical as well as well done.Particularly useful are the illustrations of common negative faults, something I had missed after moving to the Suess text. Highly recommended but please note that this is a bookheavily weighted to using film cameras as well as processes and procedures in the darkroom. There are other works more suited for digital photography and for those who are looking for a reference on the "art" of photography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice and Easy
For a College Photography class, this is probably the easiest and definately one of the cheapest books you will ever buy for class. Very easy reading and excellent directions.A must have for anyone who needs the basic steps to using a camara and darkroom for black and white film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Starting Point
If you are new to black and white film photography and you intend to work in the darkroom, there is no better place to start than with this book. It has for a long time been the definitive college level introductory text, and for good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photography 101 in Book Form
Photography 101 for me was an actual class which I took in 1983. This book is a must-have in my opinion, because it really is Photography 101 in book form, lab not included. The book contains excellent quality black & white drawings and photographs, and the style of writing is in straightforward, plain English. For me it's as useful now as it was then. I'll never get rid of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Black and White Techniques
Even though the photography world seems to be going completely digital, film will probably not die out any time too soon, and the last to die will more than likely be black and white film. There will still be hard core enthusiasts who will enjoy the medium of black and white film and know that nothing compares with the excitement of developing one's own photographs. For those who wish to learn this art form, Henry Horenstein's BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY; A BASIC MANUAL is an excellent resource. This book is sued by many instructors as a textbook. It contains excellent information about the basics of photography including camera, lens, shutter and exposure and the developing process. Throughout the book there are many compositional techniques as well as the use of filters to enhance photographs. Though this is a manual for black and white photographers, those interested in color photography will find the boo helpful since understanding eth techniques involved in black and white photography help detect important nuances in color photography that can truly enhance a photograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vastly underrated, excellent book
A few years ago I did a 1:1 study with a retired fashion photographer who recommended this book.Even though I have been working in b/w for over 30 years I find the book useful.Nice to have all the basic info in one place and this book does that!!As to a lack of "artistic suggestions" in the book...well I have a huge library of texts that were purchased to help me learn the "art" of photogaphy. My retired friend taught me a valuable lesson, learn the technical from a book then shoot, shoot, shoot!!That's about the only way you will learn the "art" of it.I've been asked to teach an intro to b/w photography this summer and this will be the textbook for it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on a widely unknown great in US history
This book was a fantastic beginning to research on a man largely ignored by American history. I hope this study sparks more work on White. He was a great man, flawed, but with superb strengths of character, facing the final consolidation of Jim Crow in the south, as a member of the demographic community the evil Jim Crow regime targeted. Thanks to the author for removing my ignorance on such a great American.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Ahead of His Time
I know the author of this book, and that is what first interested me in reading it.But I quickly learned there was more to George White than the novelty of being the only African American in Congress (1897-1901).He was a talented, accomplished man--ahead of his time in choosing to combine successful public and private careers with an unusual attention to the less fortunate of his own race.He faced a momentous decision at the turn of the century: accept the new segregation oin the United States, and the disfranchisement that came with it, or condemn both and fight them.he chose the latter, and effectively ended his own political career. But he remains a fascinating man, and one well worth reading about.I recommend you read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little-Known Renaissance Man From NC
George Henry White represented North Carolina in Congress from 1897 until 1901.When he left, he became the last man of his race to be elected to Congress during the post-Reconstruction era, leaving a void which would not be filled for nearly 30 years (North Carolina didn't elect another African-American to Congress until 1992).White became, sadly, an historical footnote.

Benjamin Justesen has performed an intense labor of love in resurrecting White's story.Armed with prodigious amounts of careful research - reflected in the copious footnotes sprinkled throughout the text - and his own personal determination to bring this biography to public attention, Justesen has realized his dream of writing George Henry White's life story after becoming acquainted with his subject while working as a reporter in the 1970s.

He brings to life the issues and prejudices of the period, which only serve to magnify the high principles to which White held himself.Believing that education and one's own hard work got one where one wanted to go, White proved his beliefs in a time when Southern public sentiment was gradually moving into its shameful Jim Crow era.

A lawyer, politician, banker, real estate developer, family man and man of faith, George Henry White is a model for anyone today - black or white - who thinks, "I cannot."His life is an example to us all, and his biography a fascinating look at both a man and an era in Southern history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The man of the hour at the turn of the century
At the outset: I'm the author, and of course, I'm partial to my own book. But I'm also immersed in the subject, having spent the last four years of my life bringing George White's story to readers.George White was a fascinating man, but one about whom little is known today: the first African American to serve in Congress in the 20th century (retiring in 1901) and the last of 22 to serve from the South after the Civil War until the 1970s.He was a stalwart Republican, and served alone in the Congress for four years. But he was more than a token--an accomplished teacher, lawyer, prosecutor, developer and banker. He deserves to be studied in depth; my attempt is the baseline, a painstakingly drawn outline, based on a careful study of limited evidence.Judge for yourself--and then place him in his rightful position in our history, as the intriguing, honest, flawed but eminently admirable individual he was.I recommend him--and this book--highly! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
This book is a real classic. You will see how rocket wizzard and space visionary Wernher von Braun and his colleagues imagined a manned mission to Mars with the technology available in the mid 20th century. With today's knowledge and financial horizon, von Braun's vision looks pretty oversized, and the surface of Mars certainly is very different from what they believed 50 years ago. The very value of this book is that it simply showed how such an extensive mission could be made feasible -- that it is possible to send people to Mars without fancy technology of science fiction writers. The authors use some calculus and diagrams to explain the complicated flight dynamics for sending a spacecraft to another planet and landing on its surface.
Today we know that a mission to Mars will not look like von Braun's "Mars Project" but it is good to know that most of the basics haven't changed. Buy this book together with Robert Zubrin's "Case for Mars" and you'll see the progress within half a century.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the true space junkie.
Do you wonder how they did it? How they actually figured out how to get to the moon? Well, this is Von Braun's plan for getting to mars using the technologies available in the early 1950's and it shows the detailedthinking necessary to figure out how to make it all work. Lots of math anddiagrams. My vote for the best book of the century. To give you some idea,I already own this book, a 1962 edition. It is getting too precious tothumb through. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
When too little is known and too much is feared, we turn to books. In the spirit of providing much-needed solace comes Henry & the White Wolf, an illustrated storybook-and poignant allegory--to help kids who are sick, or kids with friends who are sick, or kids whose parents or siblings or teachers are sick.

What makes the simple, straightforward story especially comforting and so close to a child's point of view is that it is written and illustrated by a teenage brother and sister who draw not only on their own feelings of being in the hospital, but the experience of offering support to close friends with serious illnesses. It is this spirit that inspired the authors to package with the book a soft, round stone for every child to hold-just like the talismanic stone in the story that Henry, the little sick hedgehog, must hold onto while undergoing the debilitating treatment offered up by the fearsome White Wolf. No matter how bad it gets, Henry clutches his stone for dear life-literally-and it reminds him that the dignity and courage he needs to get better are always with him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Tale
This story provides a way for children and parents alike to put in simple terms the complex feelings which arise with chronic illnesses and disorders. For children too young to discuss their feelings, this book voices the fears they cannot express with words.I recommend this book to all children who must face illness, whether it be chronic or temporary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Treat
Henry and the White Wolf is an extraordinary fable and a must-read for families with, and without, young loved ones who are ill.Beautifully written and illustrated, this magical little story offers hope and healing for children undergoing difficult medical procedures. The accompanying smooth pebble and the book are treasures to be held onto in time of sickness and in health.Enjoy this enchanting tale of strength, hope, and dignity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Courage

this was advertised as a new book when in fact it is used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall
This bok overall has captured my eye out of every book I have ever had to read for any course. It has many interestcing topics andstories I highly recommend this book. Received in good condition and good timing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Informative, Introductory Book
I utilize Profit Without Honor as one of the required textbooks in an college course I teach at Herkimer County Community College entitled CJ 122: Intoduction to Economic Crime Investigation.

I find the book is quite comprehensive, extensively researched and very well written. There is just enough theoretical foundations along with a true plethora of historical and recent examples to educate and inform. My students have received the book very well, commenting that while it is far reaching it is also a fairly easy "read" that isn't to confusing or overwhelming. It's my opinion that Profit Without Honor is an excellent introductory text to aquaint the casual reader or the student with the far reaching, comprehensive nature of economic crime, white collar crime and fraud present today.

I look forward to a third edition when recent incidents such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom etc. would hopefully be addressed.

As a side note, the fraud realted quotes from motion pictures that serve as chapter headings are hilarious! (i.e. Teacher: What is the capital of Nebraska?First Student: Lincoln.Teacher: Right. Who freeded the slaves?Second Student: LincolnTeacher: Right. Charles Keating cooked the books at what S&L?Third Student: Lincoln?)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR combines immaculate scholarship, penetrating insight, and a witty and engaging style of writing. Readers will find material that will trigger righteous indignation, and insights that will make them nod in agreement and wonder why they hadn't thought of that. The authors provide a vast array of information on white-collar offenses that challenges current concentration on street law-breaking as the most serious crime problem in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
That is probably the wrong word to begin a critique of a book... PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR is one of the finest books that I have ever read on the subject of white-collar crime. Each chapter was outstanding: the writing style; the organization of material, past and present; the research; the footnotes. PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR is outstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRED BLACK AND WHITE SKETCHES
Hans, a young boy, comes from a family of bakers.Nonetheless, he dreams of working with the handsome Lippizan stallions of Vienna.

How this unlikely dream comes true is an encouraging and challenging story for young readers. It's a reminder that goals can be achieved.

This is a handsome book with the march of the stallions around the arena decorating the front and back fly leaves.Wesley Dennis's inspired black and white sketches which appear throughout are treasures in themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Horses, Our Teachers
Ah, what can I say about such an important book in my life?

Hans is a poor boy who dreams of riding dressage with the Spanish Riding School of his native Vienna. He attains his goal through hard work and perseverance, by his own merit and against the odds. The book is beautifully written with a flowing narrative style, engaging for both adults and children. The illustrations are the best I have seen from Dennis, at times humorous, at times scholarly, and always precise.

I did my senior thesis on the birth of dressage in the Renaissance, but without this book I would never have even heard of Xenophon, or the passage, or known that the Ancient Greeks rode without stirrups.I illustrated it with my own copies of Wesley Dennis's drawings from this book.

Also highly recommended as horsey history, "Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio" by the same writer/illustrator team.

If you would like to find out more about Classical dressage please check out Laura Camins's "Glorious Horsemen" and Walter Leitdke's "Royal Horse and Rider," both of which deal with the birth of dressage in the Renaissance according to modern scholarship, and by extension the noble equestrian ballets of which the Spanish Riding school is the last still extant.Did you know that the Louvre's great central courtyard was designed to accommodate horse ballets exactly like those in this book?

When I first read this book, when I was about seven years old, I owned a Lipizzan mare of my own.She was for me what Borina was to Hans, my schoolmaster. She was small and gray, with a wide girth, branded, and very long lived. She would do caprioles as we galloped through the field, I kid you not. Were it not for this book I would not have the words to describe her, to remember her like this, and so I am indebted Marguerite Henry.

To bring one spark of beauty into the world is worth a life's dedication, is it not?Certainly mine.

Read the book and you will understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it.Now.
If you have any doubts about purchasing this book, forget them and buy itnow.I was given this book when I was a child (20 years ago) and itthrills to me to this day.Ms. Henry writes with such imagery that youfind yourself caught up as Hans, the young boy who is captivated by thestallions. Not only is the writing terrific, but so is the artwork.Thisstory is one of my all-time favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Horse Story Ever!
This is the story of Hans, a young Austrian boy that wishes more than anything to work with the "Dancing White Horses," the Lipizzaner stallions of Vienna. In the story he is accepted to the Spanish RidingSchool, the finest riding school in the world, and then the work begins.Teamed with his patient instructors, one two-legged and one four-legged,Hans sets out to achieve his dream and prove to everyone that any goal ispossible with dedication. This is my all-time favorite horse story; thecharacters are believeable, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the storyis timeless.
