The book was just as described and arrived a week before it was scheduled to!!!Would recommend!
Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those stepping into the world of B&W film and darkroom
I have another book on the same subject. It covers more and it offers more detail in almost every subject it handles.
And, it made me feel helpless when I tried to read it. I said, "no, I cannot do this whole processing, printing and whatever thing"!
Now, after reading Horenstein's book, I think I CAN do it! I must do it! That, I call a big difference.

In short: This is a beautifully prepared, detailed guideline for entering into the conventional B&W photography world.
It has almost nothing that could be useful for digital photography.
I say "almost" because there are many beautiful photographs by some leading photographers within (all related to the subject matter, by the way).
Watching those can be inspiring even for those shooting digital only :)

In fact, its title says it all (this has become a rather unusual event, lately): "A Basic Manual".
It handles every imaginable subject with, authority and care; from film ISO to mounting prints.
Suitable even for those who have started photography just recently.
I recommend this book without any reservation to the small, specific subset of B&W film photographers who intend to print their own images in a darkroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read if you need the basics
A well done book about Black and White photography. It was purchased for a class I'm taking. It essentially goes over all of the basics.

Product Description
When too little is known and too much is feared, we turn to books. In the spirit of providing much-needed solace comes HENRY & THE WHITE WOLF, an illustrated storybook-and poignant allegory-to help kids who are sick, or kids with friends who are sick, or kids whose parents or siblines or teachers are sick.

What makes the simple, straightforward story especially comforting and so close to a child's point of view is that it is written and illustrated by a teenaged brother and sister who not only draw on their own feelings of being in the hospital, but the experience of offering support to close friends with serious illnesses. It is the same fresh thinking that inspired the authors to package with the book a soft, round stone for every child to hold-just like the talismanic stone in the story that Henry, the little sick hedgehog, must hold onto while undergoing the debilitating treatment offered up by the White Wolf, a figure feared by all the hedgehogs. No matter how bad it gets, Henry clutches his stone for dear life-literally-and it gives him the dignity and courage he needs to get better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Tale
This story provides a way for children and parents alike to put in simple terms the complex feelings which arise with chronic illnesses and disorders. For children too young to discuss their feelings, this book voices the fears they cannot express with words.I recommend this book to all children who must face illness, whether it be chronic or temporary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Treat
Henry and the White Wolf is an extraordinary fable and a must-read for families with, and without, young loved ones who are ill.Beautifully written and illustrated, this magical little story offers hope and healing for children undergoing difficult medical procedures. The accompanying smooth pebble and the book are treasures to be held onto in time of sickness and in health.Enjoy this enchanting tale of strength, hope, and dignity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of believing
Beautifully illustrated story that moves the soul. This book fills your heart with joy. It's not only for sick children but any child that is enduring a difficult time in his or her life, like the sickness of a sibling, freind, parent or close one.I highly recommned this book to anyone that is able to read or is able to be read to, while experiencing the uncertainty of being ill.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Courage
A superb little book! It's a truly wonderful gift for seriously ill children who are naturally frightened by the whole experience. Also a worthwhile gift for healthy children as well.A great way to teach compassion and prepare children for all sorts of scarey situations. The story is very sweet, and I applaud the talented young authors for their imagination and storytelling skill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Quick delivery and in good condition. The book is a real weighty tome, written by a great mind; I love it.A great example of why second-hand book buying through Amazon is such a wonderful idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful.
Whatever your views on Kissinger, and let's be honest we all have a view, this is a fascinating look into the Nixon White House and Kissinger's role throughout it.Though Years of Upheaval/Renewal are good in their own right, White House Years sets the table for a fascinating series and should be a part of any government/political junkies reading diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont be stupid
1 "1" how the hell could they have ended the war when Hanoi demanded a unilateral pullout and that the US toppled the Saigon government on the way out?? It took years of political and military pressure for Hanoi to abandon that demand. Dont be stupid.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1-1 is a raving idiot
1-1 has cut and pasted the same idiotic rant for all three volumes of Dr. Kissinger's memoirs, and has obviously NOT READ ONE SINGLE PAGE OF ANY OF THEM!!!! Go post your polemics on Indymedia you moron.
This is a first rate account of one of the most influential statesman in history.

1-0 out of 5 stars War Criminal
if you want the evil truth about Dr K and how he undermined the 1968 peace talks, read "No Peace, No Honor: Nixon, Kissinger, and Betrayal in Vietnam" by Larry Berman.

This book explains how Nixon and Kissinger illegally colluded with SVN and Nguyen Van Thieu - he was told by Nixon via Anna Chenault to "hold on, we are going to win" and "you will get a better deal with us". So Thieu says he won't talk peace, Nixon wins, Kissinger openly changes sides after working with the Democrats, and together they crank up the war.

The point is: The War could have ended in 1968 if it were not for this man - Dr Death himself, Henry Adolf Kissinger! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Film Photography Basics
This book is very helpful for those interested in photography. Especially film photography, but the earlier chapters are good for any photographer. It explains the basic principles of photography, as well as gives a good composition foundation. A worthwhile purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice and Easy
For a College Photography class, this is probably the easiest and definately one of the cheapest books you will ever buy for class. Very easy reading and excellent directions.A must have for anyone who needs the basic steps to using a camara and darkroom for black and white film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Starting Point
If you are new to black and white film photography and you intend to work in the darkroom, there is no better place to start than with this book. It has for a long time been the definitive college level introductory text, and for good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photography 101 in Book Form
Photography 101 for me was an actual class which I took in 1983. This book is a must-have in my opinion, because it really is Photography 101 in book form, lab not included. The book contains excellent quality black & white drawings and photographs, and the style of writing is in straightforward, plain English. For me it's as useful now as it was then. I'll never get rid of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Black and White Techniques
Even though the photography world seems to be going completely digital, film will probably not die out any time too soon, and the last to die will more than likely be black and white film. There will still be hard core enthusiasts who will enjoy the medium of black and white film and know that nothing compares with the excitement of developing one's own photographs. For those who wish to learn this art form, Henry Horenstein's BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY; A BASIC MANUAL is an excellent resource. This book is sued by many instructors as a textbook. It contains excellent information about the basics of photography including camera, lens, shutter and exposure and the developing process. Throughout the book there are many compositional techniques as well as the use of filters to enhance photographs. Though this is a manual for black and white photographers, those interested in color photography will find the boo helpful since understanding eth techniques involved in black and white photography help detect important nuances in color photography that can truly enhance a photograph. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother...
This book was the least expensive on Amazon, but the book still wasn't worth the money. It's a story book about stuff readily available in the news and on the Internet.Even our instructor, who is also an attorney, commented repeatedly that he hated the book--the class did too.In fact, the instructor said he is changing the book for next semester. We all told him to wait before telling the bookstore in hopes they would buy back this piece of crap from us poor students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall
This bok overall has captured my eye out of every book I have ever had to read for any course. It has many interestcing topics andstories I highly recommend this book. Received in good condition and good timing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Informative, Introductory Book
I utilize Profit Without Honor as one of the required textbooks in an college course I teach at Herkimer County Community College entitled CJ 122: Intoduction to Economic Crime Investigation.

I find the book is quite comprehensive, extensively researched and very well written. There is just enough theoretical foundations along with a true plethora of historical and recent examples to educate and inform. My students have received the book very well, commenting that while it is far reaching it is also a fairly easy "read" that isn't to confusing or overwhelming. It's my opinion that Profit Without Honor is an excellent introductory text to aquaint the casual reader or the student with the far reaching, comprehensive nature of economic crime, white collar crime and fraud present today.

I look forward to a third edition when recent incidents such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, WorldCom etc. would hopefully be addressed.

As a side note, the fraud realted quotes from motion pictures that serve as chapter headings are hilarious! (i.e. Teacher: What is the capital of Nebraska?First Student: Lincoln.Teacher: Right. Who freeded the slaves?Second Student: LincolnTeacher: Right. Charles Keating cooked the books at what S&L?Third Student: Lincoln?)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
PROFIT WITHOUT HONOR combines immaculate scholarship, penetrating insight, and a witty and engaging style of writing. Readers will find material that will trigger righteous indignation, and insights that will make them nod in agreement and wonder why they hadn't thought of that. The authors provide a vast array of information on white-collar offenses that challenges current concentration on street law-breaking as the most serious crime problem in the United States. ... Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:MORE MOON HELPyEARS ago, before there were any railroads, New York city had thousands of tons of merchandise it wished to send out West. Teams were few and slow, so they asked the moon to help. It was ready ; had been waiting thousands of years. We shall soon see that it is easy to slide millions of tons of coal down hill, but how could we slide freight up from New York to Albany ?It is very simple. Lift up the lower end of the river till it shall be down hill all the way to Albany. But who can lift up the end of the river ? The moon. It reaches abroad over the ocean and gathers up water from afar, brings it up by Cape Hatteras and in from toward England, pours it in through the Narrows, fills up the great harbor, and sets the great Hudson flowing up toward Albany. Then men put their big boats on the current and slide up the river. Six hours later the moon takes the water out of the harbor and lets other boats slide the other way.New York itself has made use of the moon to get rid of its immense amount of garbage and sewage. It would soon breed a pestilence, and the city be like the buried cities of old; but the moon comes to its aid, and carries away and buries all this foul breeder of a pestilence, and washes all the harbor and bay with clean floods of water twice a day. Good moon ! It not only lights, but works. The tide in New York Harbor rises only about five feet; up in the Bay of Fundy it ramps, rushes, raves, and rises more than fifty feet high.In former times men used to put mill wheels into the currents of the tides; when they rushed into little bays and salt ponds they turned the wheels one way ; when out, the other. 22STAR HELP" We for whose sake all Nature stands, And stars their courses move." 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story!
This book was much larger in size than I had anticipated. It is more the size of printer paper (8.5" by 11"), than a standard paperback. However, it gives more scope for the beautiful illustrations.Beautiful story, beautiful book.Another Marguerite Henry treasure! As with all of her books, there is a tremendous amount of education going on regarding horses. My daughter begs me to read to her.It is a wonderful activity for us to do together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of the books required in the Sonlight curriculum for 2nd grade. We enjoyed reading this book.If you buy this book, make sure to look up on You
Tube to see how the Lipizzaners actually dance. This is quite a nice addition to learning about the Lipizzaners along with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRED BLACK AND WHITE SKETCHES
Hans, a young boy, comes from a family of bakers.Nonetheless, he dreams of working with the handsome Lippizan stallions of Vienna.

How this unlikely dream comes true is an encouraging and challenging story for young readers. It's a reminder that goals can be achieved.

This is a handsome book with the march of the stallions around the arena decorating the front and back fly leaves.Wesley Dennis's inspired black and white sketches which appear throughout are treasures in themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Horses, Our Teachers
Ah, what can I say about such an important book in my life?

Hans is a poor boy who dreams of riding dressage with the Spanish Riding School of his native Vienna. He attains his goal through hard work and perseverance, by his own merit and against the odds. The book is beautifully written with a flowing narrative style, engaging for both adults and children. The illustrations are the best I have seen from Dennis, at times humorous, at times scholarly, and always precise.

I did my senior thesis on the birth of dressage in the Renaissance, but without this book I would never have even heard of Xenophon, or the passage, or known that the Ancient Greeks rode without stirrups.I illustrated it with my own copies of Wesley Dennis's drawings from this book.

Also highly recommended as horsey history, "Gaudenzia, Pride of the Palio" by the same writer/illustrator team.

If you would like to find out more about Classical dressage please check out Laura Camins's "Glorious Horsemen" and Walter Leitdke's "Royal Horse and Rider," both of which deal with the birth of dressage in the Renaissance according to modern scholarship, and by extension the noble equestrian ballets of which the Spanish Riding school is the last still extant.Did you know that the Louvre's great central courtyard was designed to accommodate horse ballets exactly like those in this book?

When I first read this book, when I was about seven years old, I owned a Lipizzan mare of my own.She was for me what Borina was to Hans, my schoolmaster. She was small and gray, with a wide girth, branded, and very long lived. She would do caprioles as we galloped through the field, I kid you not. Were it not for this book I would not have the words to describe her, to remember her like this, and so I am indebted Marguerite Henry.

To bring one spark of beauty into the world is worth a life's dedication, is it not?Certainly mine.

Read the book and you will understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it.Now.
If you have any doubts about purchasing this book, forget them and buy itnow.I was given this book when I was a child (20 years ago) and itthrills to me to this day.Ms. Henry writes with such imagery that youfind yourself caught up as Hans, the young boy who is captivated by thestallions. Not only is the writing terrific, but so is the artwork.Thisstory is one of my all-time favorites. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on a widely unknown great in US history
This book was a fantastic beginning to research on a man largely ignored by American history. I hope this study sparks more work on White. He was a great man, flawed, but with superb strengths of character, facing the final consolidation of Jim Crow in the south, as a member of the demographic community the evil Jim Crow regime targeted. Thanks to the author for removing my ignorance on such a great American.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Ahead of His Time
I know the author of this book, and that is what first interested me in reading it.But I quickly learned there was more to George White than the novelty of being the only African American in Congress (1897-1901).He was a talented, accomplished man--ahead of his time in choosing to combine successful public and private careers with an unusual attention to the less fortunate of his own race.He faced a momentous decision at the turn of the century: accept the new segregation oin the United States, and the disfranchisement that came with it, or condemn both and fight them.he chose the latter, and effectively ended his own political career. But he remains a fascinating man, and one well worth reading about.I recommend you read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Little-Known Renaissance Man From NC
George Henry White represented North Carolina in Congress from 1897 until 1901.When he left, he became the last man of his race to be elected to Congress during the post-Reconstruction era, leaving a void which would not be filled for nearly 30 years (North Carolina didn't elect another African-American to Congress until 1992).White became, sadly, an historical footnote.

Benjamin Justesen has performed an intense labor of love in resurrecting White's story.Armed with prodigious amounts of careful research - reflected in the copious footnotes sprinkled throughout the text - and his own personal determination to bring this biography to public attention, Justesen has realized his dream of writing George Henry White's life story after becoming acquainted with his subject while working as a reporter in the 1970s.

He brings to life the issues and prejudices of the period, which only serve to magnify the high principles to which White held himself.Believing that education and one's own hard work got one where one wanted to go, White proved his beliefs in a time when Southern public sentiment was gradually moving into its shameful Jim Crow era.

A lawyer, politician, banker, real estate developer, family man and man of faith, George Henry White is a model for anyone today - black or white - who thinks, "I cannot."His life is an example to us all, and his biography a fascinating look at both a man and an era in Southern history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The man of the hour at the turn of the century
At the outset: I'm the author, and of course, I'm partial to my own book. But I'm also immersed in the subject, having spent the last four years of my life bringing George White's story to readers.George White was a fascinating man, but one about whom little is known today: the first African American to serve in Congress in the 20th century (retiring in 1901) and the last of 22 to serve from the South after the Civil War until the 1970s.He was a stalwart Republican, and served alone in the Congress for four years. But he was more than a token--an accomplished teacher, lawyer, prosecutor, developer and banker. He deserves to be studied in depth; my attempt is the baseline, a painstakingly drawn outline, based on a careful study of limited evidence.Judge for yourself--and then place him in his rightful position in our history, as the intriguing, honest, flawed but eminently admirable individual he was.I recommend him--and this book--highly! ... Product Description
In His Own Words: The Writings, Speeches, and Letters of George Henry Whiteoffers a comprehensive view of the career of an African American political pioneer. The first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress in the twentieth century, George Henry White was also a renowned American orator and public servant for nearly four decades.

Editor Benjamin Justesen, author ofGeorge Henry White: An Even Chance in the Race of Life (2001)--the first full-length biography of White--compiled this exhaustive supplementary collection. Known best for his 1901 "farewell speech" to Congress, White's varied career extended far beyond the U.S. Capitol, including a powerful role as an early civil rights leader. Beginning as a North Carolina lawyer, Republican legislator, and school principal and ending as a Philadelphia banker and assistant city solicitor, he personally touched the lives of thousands with words and deeds. White also set a rare example of selfless racial leadership during a troubled period by founding Whitesboro, the experimental New Jersey colony which still bears his name.

Letters, speeches, and other documents highlight White's eloquent thoughts on key issues of the day, such as:

  • the epidemic of lynching
  • Southern disfranchisement of African American voters
  • the dismissal of African American soldiers after the Brownsville, Texas, incident
  • the most effective political philosophy for African Americans.

In His Own Words offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a true American hero, as well as a compact, useful tool for scholars of the post-Reconstruction era of American history.
