Editorial Review

Product Description
Rajani Palme Dutt (1896-1974) was a leading figure in the Communist Party of Great Britain from the 1920s to the 1960s. His strong links with the Comintern made him, throughout this period, a devoted - and stern - supporter of orthodoxy within the CPGB. This political biography provides an insight into the mind of a Stalinist, and the twists and turns of communist politics, from the first enthusiastic support for the Bolshevik revolution through to the beginnings of decay in 1956. Dutt was an intriguing political character. He had a brilliant analytical mind, and a strong commitment to the international working class movement and the cause of national liberation - especially in India, his father's birthplace; yet it seems that, even within the leading circles of the Party, he was regarded as a cold, dogmatic and ruthless operator. Through an intertwining of personal and political history, this book not only tells the fascinating story of Palme Dutt's life, but also provides a key to understanding the rise and fall of communism in the 20th century. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Mistaken Identity
The previous reviewer has Rajani Palme Dutt confused with someone else. 'She' is actually a 'he' and he is a long deceased Stalinist stalwart of the CPGB. Dutt's early career was impressive, but as Callaghan makes clear he became a mouthpiece for Moscow. That said Callaghan's book is an ordinary overview and not very engaging. Dutt's life was more exciting than the version conveyed by Callaghan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop slandering Dutt.
I haven't read this book but I have read a book by R. Palme Dutt and she is a great writer.Don't take antything John Callaghan says about her seriously.Read one of Dutt's books to learn the truth. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This is a comprehensive analysis of the issues surrounding monetary union. It presents a review of how EMU works and the ups and downs of history. Monetary union poses major problems for many European governments. In Britain, the exit from the EMU signalled the failure of John Major's economic strategy and also led to the break-up of his European policy. For Blair too the issue will cause problems. A critical supporter of the project of European monetary integration, the author puts forward his own suggestions for an alternative approach. He argues that it should exist within an overall neo-Keynesian approach to fiscal management. Recent successes of the left - the electoral success of new Labour and of the new French socialist government - means that Grahl's analysis is increasingly representative of that of the major players in Europe: that joining the EMU should not automatically necessitate fiscal stringency and cuts in public spending. John Grahl is the author (with Paul Teague) of "1992 - The Big Market: The Future of the European Community" and "Industrial Relations and European Integration". ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A book on the effect of European economic integration on industrial relations and working practices across Europe. With the coming to an end of the era of Fordism, the welfare state, collective bargaining and mass consumption, we are entering a new period whose lines of development are not clearly defined. Paul Teague and John Grahl argue that, in this period, it is vital to develop a new style of compromise between management and the unions. They highlight comparative case studies, for example the steel and coal unions in Great Britain and the rest of the Community. They demonstrate where new forms of industrial practice emphasize the productive value of the "negotiated involvement" of the workforce, at the level of the firm. The authors call for a new form of co-operation in European industrial relations, based on decentralised and pluralistic labour representation and communicated through a national and European framework.Such a framework would be based on institutional developments along the lines suggested by the EC Social Charter, supported through a set of alliances and links between trade unions and other organisations and through a common European ethos of active industrial citizenship. ... Product Description
Marx lived in London as a political exile from 1849 until his death in 1883. This book links the story of Marx's life in London to the places he lived and worked, and is aimed at visitors who are interested in seeing the places with which he was particularly associated. It is fully illustrated with photographs, maps and illustrations, and includes transport details to places of interest. Marx spent most of the first years in London in Soho, before moving to Kentish Town in 1856. Other places of significance to his life include the British Museum Reading Room, where he worked on Capital, Covent Garden, where the meetings of the First International took place, and Hampstead Heath, where Marx and his friends spent family Sundays. ...
