Hsiao Tyzen, one of the most important contemporaryTaiwanesecomposers, firmly established the status ofTaiwanese art songs in thetwentieth century.Although Hsiao?s compositionalstyle is stronglyinfluenced by romantic composers such asRachmaninov, and bynationalistic composers such as Bartók, his musicalstyle is alsostrongly associated with Taiwanese tradition.Hehas created his ownindividual style by adopting native Taiwanese folkelements andcombining them with western compositionaltechniques. This bookpresents a brief historical background of Taiwaneseart songs, introduces Hsiao?s biography, discusses Hsiao?scompositional styleand characteristics, addresses diction in Taiwaneseart songs, andanalyzes four of his Taiwanese art songs with regardto diction andmusical expression. ... From the author: The thiol-ene photopolymerization, which could be achieved with less ultraviolet (UV) intensity and photoinitiator content was first introduced into the application of injectable intraocular lenses (IOLs), thus the damages to the eye from the UV radiation and photoinitiator toxicity were greatly reduced. The bulk samples were obtained from the mixture of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropio4ate) (PTMP) by the thiolene photopolymerization. It was found that PEGDA-PTMP bulk samples had the similar transparency and the hydrophrlicity as the ones from PEGDA by homophotopolymerization. Meanwhile, when PTMP was added into PEGDA, the elastic modulus of the bulk samples was decreased and their flexibility was improved. The experimental results indicated that the thiolene photopolymerization was one potential method to obtain the ideal injectable lOLs, although many works have to be done in the future study, such as selecting proper monomers and testing the biocompati-bility of polymerized samples. From the author: Polyoxymethylene (POM) composites modified with nanoparticles, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Mo[S.sub.2] were prepared by a twin-screw extruder. The effect of nanoparticles and solid lubricant PTFE/Mo[S.sub.2] on mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were studied. Tribological tests were conducted on an Amsler friction and wear tester using a block-on-ring arrangement under dry sliding and oil lubricated conditions, respectively. The results showed that generally speaking POM nanocomposites had better stiffness and tribological properties than corresponding POM composites attributed to the high surface energy of nanoparticles, except that the tensile strength of three composites and dry-sliding tribological properties of POM/3%[Al.sub.2.O.sub.3] nanocomposite decreased due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles. Tribological properties differed under dry sliding and oil lubricated conditions. The friction coefficient and wear volume of POM nanocomposites under oil lubricated condition decreased significantly. The increased deformation resistance supported the increased wear resistance of POM nanocomposites. POM/PTFE/Mo[S.sub.2]/3%[Al.sub.2][.sub.3%[Al.sub.2.O.sub.3] nanocomposite had the best mechanical and tribological properties of all three composites, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of nanoparticles and PTFE/Mo[S.sub.2]. From the author: The morphology and mechanical properties of the in situ microfibrillar blend based on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) were examined. The microfibrillar PPS/iPP blend was prepared through a slit-die extrusion, hot stretching, and water quenching process. Morphological observation indicated that the well-defined PPS microfibrils were achieved by the method used in this study, which provided a promising method for both PPS and PP recycling. The morphology study showed that the minimum diameter of PPS phase was independent of PPS concentration. The diameter of most PPS fibrils in the microfibrillar blend was unexpectedly comparable to that of the PPS particles in the common blend at the same PPS content. The tensile strength of microfibrillar blend was higher than that of common blend, indicating the mechanical enhancement of microfibrillar processing to the PPS/iPP blend. The tensile strength of the microfibrillar blend also increased with stretching. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 45:1303-1311, 2005. [c] 2005 Society of Plastics Engineers

Description:
A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to determine vitellogenin (Vtg) in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) based on the separation and purification of rare minnow Vtg (r-Vtg) as well as the production of polyclonal antibody against r-Vtg in rabbits. Three different ELISAs for measuring r-Vtg were then compared: (1) indirect ELISA with the antibody against carp (Cyprinus carpio) Vtg (c-Vtg) (IC-ELISA); (2) competitive ELISA with the antibody against c-Vtg, and using r-Vtg for coating the plates and preparing standard curve (CC-ELISA); (3) competitive ELISA with the antibody against r-Vtg, and using r-Vtg for coating the plates and preparing standard curve (CR-ELISA). The result showed that the homologous CR-ELISA was the most sensitive among the three assays for quantifying r-Vtg. The sensitivities to 17@a-ethinylestradiol (EE"2) of rare minnow and zebrafish (Danio rerio) were compared upon the establishment of homologous competitive ELISA. The lowest observed effect concentrations (LOECs) to induce Vtg were found to be 0.8 ng EE"2 l^-^1 for rare minnow and 4 ng EE"2 l^-^1 for zebrafish respectively. Afterwards, CR-ELISA was applied to measure Vtg concentration in whole body homogenate (WBH) of juvenile rare minnow fed by three diets (tubifex from wastewater treatment plant, Artemia nauplii and commercial pellet food), and the agreements between bioassay and GC-MS analysis demonstrated that rare minnow was a sensitive fish model for assessing estrogenic effects of endocrine disrupting compounds in aquatic environment. ... Product Description
This book is a comprehensive and intensive monograph for scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians, as well as graduate students in fluid dynamics. It starts with a brief review of fundamentals of fluid dynamics, with an innovative emphasis on the intrinsic orthogonal decomposition of fluid dynamics process. This is followed by vortex dynamics dealing with the motion, interaction, stability, and breakdown of various vortices. Typical vortex structures are analyzed in laminar, translational, and turbulent flows, including stratified and rotational fluids. In another chapter vortical flow management is presented, such as diagnostics and control. Physical understanding of vortical flow phenomena and mechanisms is the first priority throughout the book. To make the book self-contained, some mathematical background is briefly presented in the main text, but major prerequisites are systematically given in appendices. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice monograph, bad editorial work
The book gathers many previously scattered result and is written at an level and with the choice of subjects that suit me very well (I do research in astrophysics).
Flow decomposition methods are presented nicely and succinctly. The range of topics is commendable. References are given in appropriate quantity. I would definitely rate the book as 4 or maybe even 5 stars, if not for the editorial aspect.

The reading is substantially less fun than it should be, because of sloppy editorial work Springer has (or maybe hasn't at all?) done on this text.
The text is marred by grammatical and stylistic language problems, sometimes more than one per page. Take p.42 (but that's just a random example): A sentence "The formulas not only show (..) but also, via (2.103), tells how fast the influnce of (..) increases." is followed almost immediately by this beautiful statement, which am I still trying to decipher: "It does not care any boundary condition for \nabla phi and \nabla\cross psi." I almost feel that learning some Chinese might be helpful..

I hope that Springer corrects itself in a second edition of this useful book. ... Read more
