5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for any student of history
Read it once, you'll never read it again--but you'll never forget the contents. And you'll want the rest of the world to read it. The author was the curator of the museum. This is an overview of daily life in the camp, as well as the Nazi killing machinery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 5-star rating for coverage - three stars for depth.
This is an easy-to-read-and-understand history of the background of Naziism and how it led to the concentration camps and then to Auschwitz in particular. For readability and coverage, I have to give it five stars. Once you read this book, containing plenty of good photos, and plenty of documentation, you do have a pretty good understanding of what Auschwitz is all about.

This book is a translation of the book "Guide to the Museum" which is sold at Auschwitz. Since it is addressed to the audience of Auschwitz museum-goers, it does have a good bit of that political neutralism you find in institutional documentation as well as the good look of a book you walk out of the museum with and show later to your friends.

It is a little glossy chapbook of sorts, but well worth reading to those not that familiar with the subject, or for those wishing to refresh themselves of Auschwitz history in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars It sent chills down my spine. A must for decedents.
I've read other books on Auschwitz but this one really stuck in my mind, The photo's and the experiences of this author as a survivor of the horrors of his daily existence in this death camp sent shivers down my spine. How is it possible for people to do this to other human being ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Casimir Pulaski
This is an excellent book to read about the life of Casimir Pulaski who was a hero in the Revolutionary War. Pulaski was from Poland, yet came over to America to help fight against England. There is a monument and a fort named in his honor in Georgia. Best read by 4th graders and older. Middle School students would enjoy the book and read it easily. The cover of book offers a nice visual for early elementary students during a study of Pulaski's life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The portrait of the twentieth century
Kazimierz Moczarski's book is a compelling portrait of the totalitarian personality, the "banality of evil": the SS killer Stroop is above all a person bereft of real personality or character - actually, although speaking about toughness and hardness all the time, a spineless, repulsing, soulless coward at heart. It is also a portrait of twentieth century totalitarianism and its cynicism, because Moczarski actually was a resistance fighter himself, but belonging to the "wrong" (non-Communist) resistance, was equated and put in the same cell with this Nazi criminal after the war. This should be compulsory reading both for unreconstructed communists and right-wing holocaust deniers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mass Murder Without Convictions
The author, Kazimierz Moczarski, was a member of the Polish Home Army, the Polish resistance to the German occupation during World War II. After the war, the Communist authorities imprisoned Moczarski because he was not a Communist. Ironically, he was held in a cell with Jurgen Stroop, the SS general who commanded the German forces that destroyed the Warsaw Ghetto, and with another German, a member of the SD (Sicherheitsdienst - Security Service). At one time, Moczarski had been ordered to assassinate Stroop, who was also a police official in Warsaw.
During several months, Moczarski had daily conversations with Stroop about his life and especially his role in the destruction of the Ghetto. After his release, Moczarski conducted further research about Stroop. What emerged is this book, partly biography and partly Stroop's account of his career.
The picture of Stroop is that of a shallow man with few convictions, whose SS superiors considered undistinguished, "but a good man!", presumably because he would be willing to do what ordered.
Trained in SS Leadership courses, Stroop could recite long lists of long-gone Germanic tribes of the Roman era. Knowing racial types, he plucked the hair on his head to give himself a higher, "more Aryan" forehead, and the hair on his chest, to remove any "ape-like hairiness." He changed his name from the original Josef, which was too Jewish, to Juergen, which "suited his Weltanschaung". Aware to some degree that he himself did not fit the Nazi mold, he nonetheless willingly murdered others who did not fit the same mold.
In his conversations with Moczarski, Stroop admitted that material things were his primary interest - opportunistic advancement, how much he earned, and how many uniforms and pairs of boots he had. Even after his arrest by the Allies, Stroop was puffed up by the fact that he was given a red Eisenhower jacket, until he learned that it was used to mark him as being sentenced to death by the Americans, who used his actions as police general of Wiesbaden in the killing of Allied fliers to try him in the so-called "chain of command" case. He was then sent to Warsaw, where the Poles tried him for his role in the Warsaw Ghetto - using a picture album and copy of a report that he had kept with him till his arrest. Stroop was hanged on the terrain of the former Warsaw Ghetto.
Moczarski has created a portrait of a totally bland evil-doer who in another time may have lived out his live as an uninteresting policeman in Detmold, his home town.
This is must reading for historians of the criminal types that came to the fore in the Third Reich. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An early tribute to Pope John Paul II
In what are, sadly, probably the waning days of the ailing Pope John Paul II, I found Brandys Diary to be a memorable portrait of the early days of the then newly elected "Polish Pope." Throughout the 3-year span of WD, comprised of a selection of passages from 2 volumes of Brandys' journals (the complete volumes were published in his native Poland), are anecdotes of the effects this Pope had on the streets of occupied and dispirited Warsaw. Because the West weakly buckled at the Yalta conferences, giving in to Stalin's territorial demands, Poland, Hungary and other central European countries turned into Russian "satellites." Shocked and disappointed at Western indifference to their desperate situation, the Poles saw new hope in the newly elected John Paul II and he embodied their new hopes for freedom. Feeling that "He has come to lift us out of the mud," the Polish people found redemption in this Pope, believing that "the holy fire of faith burns in this Pope." Brandys lauds this Pope's "liberality" also, reporting on the 1979 televized Mass performed at Auschwitz and of his plea for tolerance of other religions, including the Jewish faith. As for the ever-unanswered "Jewish question" which plagues Poland, Brandys wisely concludes "The whole truth is clearly too complex ever to be grasped." Papal views are not the sole comprisal of WD, of course. Throughout the text of this quick read with it's abbreviated diary entries, we glean Brandys' feelings on such diverse peoples like Americans: "I envy them their innocence and naivete;" Russia: "the deranged void" whose existence he prefers to totally ignore and whose literature, touchingly enough, frightens Brandys ("especially the stories of Gogol"). Woven throughout WD are the usual descriptions of life under occupation: the long lines at stores everywhere, the chronic shortages of necessities...witness Brandys' sarcastic "There is no lack of anything here except for the half that has been amputated." Passing references to then-new historical figures and events are of interest, too. A October 1979 entry remarks on playwright Vaclav Havel's "huge act of heroism" in his choosing trial and sentencing over emigration in defending his "dissident" stand on human rights in then-Czechoslovakia. In the 1981 a certain Lech Walesa starts to get mentioned as he heads the Solidarity movement: "He incarnates the spirit of the street and is the hero of the lines." As 1981 is the cut-off point for the diary, however, we are left hungray for more bird's-eye views of these all-important leaders and movements. It is impossible to convey all that is contained within the 260 pp. of WD. Its' richness goes way beyond what is discussed above as Brandys digresses into weighty questions of spirituality and divine Providence. A 1979 quote helped me understand a 1999 quote from my college professor who believes that the starting point for postmodern society began as a direct result of the Holocaust. Unable to believe that such a massive change in society could result from this one aspect of the second World War in Europe, Brandys' comment "With Auschwitz, it is impossible to defend oneself against the idea we've been abandoned by Providence" makes me understand her position a little more. After all, Brandys lived through such atrocious times and survived to tell the tale. ... Read more
