Extractions: Queer Masculinity Studies INTRODUCTION Men and Masculinity Studies Why Men's Studies? B In the early 1970's, this awareness was expanded into a new area, Men's Studies. Scholars in this field began to ask the question, "If the experience of being female has a profound effect on a woman's behavior and on others' reactions to her, does the experience of being male also have powerful implications for men?" The answer would seem to be an emphatic "yes." Brod (1987b) pointed out that traditional scholarship is "about men only by virtue of not being about women" (p. 264). Men's Studies moves masculinity from the periphery of inquiry into the center. The subject of study is not, as in most traditional scholarship, about men as historical, political, and cultural actors, but rather about men as men.
