[Currently out of print.] P sychiatrist Dori Laub, writing about the difficulty of narrating events such as genocide, observes that "The horror of the historical experience . . . is, indeed, compelling not only in its reality, but even more so, in its flagrant distortion and subversion of reality." Little wonder, then, that many fantasy writers - practitioners of a genre often considered escapist, rather than realistic - have produced powerful work about historical trauma, texts in which fantastic images and language represent the strangeness reality assumes in moments of extreme violence. One of the most successful narratives of this type is Geoff Ryman's The Unconquered Country, set in Pol Pot's Cambodia. Originally published in 1982 in the British science-fiction magazine Interzone, Ryman's story went on to win the British Fantasy Award for Best Novella in 1985 and the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction in the same year. An expanded version of the novella is included in Ryman's collection Unconquered Countries, now out of print, but well worth tracking down. The main character of The Unconquered Country Third regains what she has lost only at the end of the novella, when she dies and is reunited with the ghosts of everyone she has loved. Her spirit and the spirits of her country remain unconquered. "The temples would be there waiting too, and the villages, and the houses. The houses would greet their families with their cries for the dead." This final grace, however, cannot justify the pain that has come before. Ryman's strange and beautiful story uses the metaphors of fantasy to pierce hearts calloused by the numbing realism of the evening news.

Peace is providing the basic necessities of life for every human being; eliminating violence, oppression, greed and environmental destruction; and working through conflict at home, at work and between nations. The 20th Century has seen far more soldiers and civilians die in warfare than in any other century. Our cities and suburban regions, too, are hit by frighteningly high levels of violence. Systemic poverty grinds away at healthy community life in certain urban and rural districts even as sexism continues to support patterns of violence against women. Likewise, the last 40 years have seen an upsurge in humanity's impact on the natural biosphere. Advances in technological, industrial and agricultural power have changed patterns of production and consumption and increased humanity's conflict with basic ecological balances on the earth. Given the pervasiveness of contemporary violence and conflict, it is imperative to explore patterns of conflict resolution and peacemaking grounded in commitments to social justice. Loyola's Peace Studies Minor Program is the only such program in the Chicago area. It focuses on three distinct spheres of violence, conflict, and peacemaking: international, societal and ecological. Peace Studies offers an intergrated examination of violence and conflict in these diverse spheres, the linkages between and among these different patterns of violence, and modes of conflict resolution and peacemaking pertinent to each sphere. Extractions: The purpose of the Master of Arts: Peace Studies (MAPS) program is to provide the environment for a deepening understanding of and commitment to the biblical vision of peace and justice and its embodiment in the world. The program is grounded in the assumption that Christ calls us to become part of a new community whose mission is to participate in God's reconciling work throughout the world. While not designed for a specific profession, the MAPS program prepares students for peace and justice ministries from congregational to worldwide levels. The principal thrust of the MAPS program since its inception has been reflection on the biblical-historical-theological foundations of the peace position. Attention is also given to experiential learning, contemporary social ethics and the contribution of the social sciences to peace/justice-making. The MAPS faculty seeks to take seriously the hermeneutic that knowledge grows out of obedience and obedience grows from hearing the word. They are thus committed to assisting students in the integration of action, reflection, and prayer. Length of course Completion of the program will normally require two full academic years (60 hours), including Interterm and/or some summer school. However, depending upon the student's academic background, the Curriculum Committee may approve a shorter period of time upon petition and recommendation of the student's adviser and the M.A. Director.
