FESTIVAL OF CULTURES This amazing Festival is a celebration of diversity. 7000+ guests join the Festival Board and volunteers on the RMC Green to sing, dance, and sample the ethnic delicacies. The two phrases "our community" and "Festival of Cultures" are synonymous on this day. A full year of meeting and planning and learning precedes each Festival. This working Board brings new, fresh ideas to the Festival each year. They remember both the extended family and the entire community as they plan activities, entertainment, and layout. This event is open to anyone at no cost for attendance, performances, and children's activities. Festival 2002 is June 9th, 10am - 5pm. Our work with the farmers in Southern Siberia has evolved into an electronic bridge that facilitates the exchange of farming ideas and current technologies. Our partners in the Kuzbass send questions and the Institute's professional consultants then respond through our Russian interpreters. The exchange is quite specific to the needs expressed and is proving to be a valuable "connection." The information is reprinted and distributed in Russia for use by the area's private farmers. As they gain experience and as the Russian economy stabilizes, this program is winding to a close.

The concentration is composed of a six-course cluster, centering around conflict and cooperation within and between nations. Of these six courses up to three may also count towards the fulfillment of the student's major. Peace and Conflict Studies draws upon the long-standing interest in war, conflict and peacemaking and social justice, as well as questions associated with the fields of anthropology, history, political science, social psychology, economics and sociology. It draws on these fields for theoretical understandings of matters such as bargaining, internal causes of conflict, cooperative and competitive strategies of negotiation, intergroup relations, and the role of institutions in conflict management. A student meets with the Coordinator (in the spring of the sophomore year) to work out a plan for the concentration. The two core courses for the minor, and the pattern of requirements for the major, make use of four stages (the "Circle of Praxis" ): (1) experience (actual and vicarious) of poverty and injustice; (2) descriptive analysis (study of the economic, political, and social realities of a culture, and the historical events that produced those realities); (3) normative analysis (moral judgment on existing society, study of alternative possibilities for that society, and analysis of the moral values at stake); and (4) action possibilities (Strategies and skills for transforming society from its present condition to a better condition including a variety of strategies such as those outlined in the "Social Change Wheel").
