3-0 out of 5 stars Eh?Not what I wanted
This book gives a good overview of the test, and tells you what content is eligable. The practice test is pretty accurate and explanations are good. However I was hoping for a book with more content review, as some of the other ETS books are.Not in this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money !!
If you are in need of a resource to study for a Praxis Test....do not buy the books written by ETS.They are a waste of money and provide you with no insight of how to study for these tests. Basically , these books tell you to know everything. I think Barron's puts out the best books to study for Praxis Exams....at least on the elementary level.I got the Barron books for the Praxis.....followed their advice and passed the exam .I do not recommend the books by ETS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent study guide
While this study guide does have some good information a lot of the first couple chapters are fluff.By this I mean that they spend time going over the purpose of the test, the grading process, how they train the graders, etc... The last couple chapters are quite good because it gives examples of what an essay response that received a grade of "4" looks like vs. one that received a "6".You can than highlight or take notes and formulate your own style. What I got the most out of was the style of essay answers and the jargon that was used.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed with this book. The information was all stuff I had already read on the ETS website plus a practice test. A very small booklet for a rather large price. I found the best test prep book for this exam was Kaplan's Praxis, it had much more detailed information about the content itself. All in all, this book was good for the pretest and detailed example answers that followed so it isn't a complete waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars study guide
This was useful in my preparation for the test.I passed the first time.

Editorial Review

Book Description
Under globalization, the project of area studies and its relationship to the fields of cultural, ethnic, and gender studies has grown more complex and more in need of the rigorous reexamination that this volume and its distinguished contributors undertake. In the aftermath of World War II, area studies were created in large part to supply information on potential enemies of the United States. The essays in Learning Places argue, however, that the post–Cold War era has seen these programs largely degenerate into little more than public relations firms for the areas they research.
A tremendous amount of money flows—particularly within the sphere of East Asian studies, the contributors claim—from foreign agencies and governments to U.S. universities to underwrite courses on their histories and societies. In the process, this volume argues, such funds have gone beyond support to the wholesale subsidization of students in graduate programs, threatening the very integrity of research agendas. Native authority has been elevated to a position of primacy; Asian-born academics are presumed to be definitive commentators in Asian studies, for example. Area studies, the contributors believe, has outlived the original reason for its construction. The essays in this volume examine particular topics such as the development of cultural studies and hyphenated studies (such as African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American) in the context of the failure of area studies, the corporatization of the contemporary university, the prehistory of postcolonial discourse, and the problematic impact of unformulated political goals on international activism.
Learning Places points to the necessity, the difficulty, and the possibility in higher education of breaking free from an entrenched Cold War narrative and making the study of a specific area part of the agenda of education generally. The book will appeal to all whose research has a local component, as well as to those interested in the future course of higher education generally.

Book Description
This is a book of Afghanistan, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by historical and cultural factors. Each study is written by a multidisciplinary team of social scientists. The authors seek to provide a basic understanding of the observed society, striving for a dynamic rather than a static portrayal. Particular attention is devoted to the people who make up the society, their origins, dominant beliefs and values, their common interests and the issues on which they are divided, the nature and extent of their involvement with national institutions, and their attitudes toward each other and toward their social system and political order. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AFGHANISTAN BEFORE THE TALIBAN
"AFGHANISTAN a country study", Dept Army Pamphlet 550-65 5th edition, January 1986, 400+ pp. As I write this review, I see that an updated November 2001 edition of this book has only just now become available. The 5th edition was written during the Soviet occupation and war against the mujahidin resistance.

As usual with this excellent series, the author gives a concise summary of the nation's historical, geographical, cultural, political, economic, and military aspects for his readers. What I especially found most helpful, in light of more recent events, were both his detailed description and analysis of the previous 10 years of history and political developments through the end of 1985 as the Soviet Union came to dominate, invade, occupy, and devastate Afghanistan and the detailed explanation of the differences and relationships between the 15+ major Afghani ethnic groups separated by language, religion, geography and history. The author includes an extremely astute analysis of Soviet political, economic, and military strategy and tactics which led to their withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, defeat of the Najibullah regime in 1992, and the subsequent fundamentalist Islamic state ruled by the Taliban.

Having read several other DA pam 550 Area Handbooks, I was struck also by the author's appropriate use of humor in many places, which is not usually found in other area handbooks or in federally funded documents in general. Unfortunately, this series is not updated as frequently as I would like it to be. Obviously, an annual edition is not necessary since other government agencies perform that function but I would like to see more frequent revisions of titles in the series which incorporate the most recent current events and available economic data on a 4 or 5 year cycle whenever possible. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Protected areas have emerged as major arenas of dispute concerning both indigenous and environmental protection. In the Malay Archipelago, which contains two of the twenty-five biodiversity hotspots identified globally, rampant commercial exploitation is jeopardizing species and rural livelihoods. While protected areas remain the only hope for the imperiled biota of the Malay Archipelago, this protection requires consideration of the sustenance needs and economic aspirations of the local people. Putting forward the views of all the stakeholders of protected areas - conservation practitioners and planners, local community members, NGO activists, government administrators, biologists, lawyers, policy and management analysts and anthropologists - this book fills a unique niche in the area of biodiversity, and is a highly valuable and original reference book for graduate students, scientists and managers, as well as government officials and transnational NGOs. ... Book Description

The development and study of human rights have increased significantly over time and have seen an intensified interest at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Much can be learned about the status of universal human rights by approaching the subject from regional perspectives. These diverse vantage points shed new light on the importance and complexity of the issues.
David P. Forsythe and Patrice C. McMahon have brought together a collection of essays from top scholars in their fields. Each essay examines how a region, as defined by geography or culture, affects the standards and practice of human rights in a particular area. The issues discussed include human rights and child labor in South Asia, women’s rights in Muslim states, the prospects and challenges of human rights in the Middle East, the role of women and tradition in Africa, and accommodating diversity in Europe. The collection also includes essays commenting on the parameters and intersections of international human rights in relation to area studies.
