3-0 out of 5 stars The foreign language translation was better !
I first came across Rosenberg's book on Nonviolent Communication in the form of its Dutch translation. Because I initially liked it and because I am much more fluent in English, I decided to order the original version in English. My goal was to acquire a manual on how to communicate more effectively in private life. The new copy (second edition, paperback) is full of abbreviations and full of marketing statements about all the wonderful things Nonviolent Communication supposedly does for you. Superficially, the book sounds great. However, applying the technique of Nonviolent Communication day to day is much more difficult than it seems. In hindsight, I got sold on the promise of the book, and I awoke with a much more difficult topic than I thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Usueful, insightful book
Got this book for a workshop, but have been interested in it for a while. Full of really great principles that foster better communication in all sorts of relationships. The workshop I used it for only covered a few chapters, but I read the whole thing and found it to be more relevant than I initially respected. Compassionate communication is all about communicating needs and feelings and exhibiting empathy rather than making value judgments and potentially harmful assumptions. To take it all the way sounds great in theory but nearly impossible in practice, however I have found that utilizing this approach as best I can has helped me greatly in difficult communication situations.

You don't have to see yourself as a poor or violent communicator to grow and improve you communication skills through this method- it can help on every level. And there is always room for improvement in human communications!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, difficult to implement
I went to an NVC information session and am reading the book for the first time.I will take the presenter's advice and read it 2 more times.I really need to learn NVC and would benefit from using it in all areas of my life. The process seems like it will be difficult to learn to implement in a way that seems natural and effortless.I hope to be able to attend practice sessions to help integrate the principles into my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teachings
The teachings in this book are easy to read and comprehend. I have applied them immediately in my workplace and was delighted with the results. It adds on as a great management skill. I particularly liked the chapter on "Anger".Out of experience and observations I have noted that when one comes away angry out a conversation one tends to look for a sympathizer. The sympathizer is usually a close friend or a relative who listens "understandingly" to all the details of the event. Feeling understood by the listener more bad points about the person who "made" one mad in the first place begin to emerge. The listener usually will add on some social values and declare the behavior absolutely unacceptable. Hence the anger is legitimized the relationship with the person who "made" one mad becomes irreparably damaged. Empathy works very well in diffusing the situation and leaves all possibilities open to express one's feelings and get what one needs. I used this in my family to help a loved one to resolve an issue when she came back angry with somebody at work. With "Nonviolent Communication" at work, She is still friends with the person who she thought was responsible for her anger.

I think if Mahatma Gandhi had read this book he would have been delighted at Dr. Rosenberg's contribution to Non Violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read
I was impressed with how well written this book was, as well as the amount of thought and insight contained in it. The huge steps I've taken in the past 2 years toward peace, self-acceptance, and realization of my potential seem to have come from attending workshops and classes based on this book. When I re-read Nonviolent Communication, I find bits I missed the other times. The chapter on self-empathy is particularly helpful on the problem of self-acceptance. I always had a lot of trouble with the phrases of you deserve, you were born with basic rights. The author helps the reader see all parts of themself, which helps them make choices that are aligned with their individual priorites and values. To me, Nonviolent Communication, the book, is a superb guide to healing, and life, helping me to be how I want to be in the world. I had a hard time with the language the first time I read it, and I know that some of it could be said more beautifully, but I've read it several times now (the second time I started with the last chapter I liked it more than the first), and given it to people. Here's why: WhenThis is a core value or belief for me and I suspect that if you really can't accept that concept, the book would not be so useful and healing in yor situation. The book goes on to show examples of thinking that gets in the way of living this core value. Most wonderful of all, it offers tools to help us live in accordance with our values. Some of the tools are: the idea that feelings point to met or unmet needs; the list of needs; the differentiation of needs from strategies to meet needs; examples of how to find the feelings and needs in some common scenarios; the insistence on separating observations from judgments; the idea of listening for the needs underlying a person's words; the explanation of feelings as having internal origin rather than being 'caused' by others, etc.

Product Description
Many people assume that good communicators possess an intrinsic talent for speaking and listening to others, a "gift of gab" that cannot be taught. The reality is that communication skills are developed slowly and with deliberate effort, and even the most gifted speakers may feel that there is at least one communication skill--say, public speaking--that they just can't master.

Messages is a best-selling classic that has already helped more than 100,000 readers develop communication skills in all areas of life. Now in its third edition, this comprehensive and endlessly practical guide includes a new chapter on couples communication and new information on using validation strategies during conflicts. Topics covered in this book include: active listening, reading body language, developing conflict resolution skills, talking to children, communicating with family members, public speaking, handling group interactions, being interviewed for jobs, and being the interviewer. This book is an invaluable resource that can help any reader develop one of the most important skill sets they have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
I had to force myself to finish this book. I am OCD about finishing books that I have started, no matter how much they may bore me. This book was very superficial and just skimmed the surface of how to deal and relate with people. I don't know, but I just didn't find it very informative at all. I am certainly not versed in "communication skills" so I thought this book would enlighten me, well, I am just as uninformed as I was when I started reading this book. Don't really recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but may be to many topics
It is a good book but may be a bit academic and is covering a lot of tooics from communication with children
to work.

This is without a doubt, the best book ever! Great depth and breath of the subject matter, presented in a very understandable and logical format.
I've reccomended it to, or bought it for everyone I talk to! Wife, kids, friends........

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for basic communication skills, not so good ath public skills
This book is great for personal communications skills. It reveals many of the mistakes we all make in our personal communications. I didn't like the second half of the book which talked about social communication skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for self awareness and relationships!
As my husband and I were reading this book together we both realized how important it is to learn more about our own reactions, approaches, etc. It's so easy to point the finger at the other person, but this book opened our eyes to what we could do differently, too! We also found benefit in reading Understanding Other People:: The Five Secrets to Human Behavior (Volume 1)where we learned some practical tools for understanding ourselves and other people better. It's all about learning more about self!

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing customer service!
The book I ordered and received was used and was in very good condition. This seller was great! The book was shipped quickly with no problems. The main reason for my great opinion of this company though is how they treated me when I had an issue.I had dropped the class that this book was intended for and when I sent the book back I had mistakenly sent it to the wrong company.By the time I realized my error it was right at the 30 day mark.I email them and explained what had happened and they still told me they would accept the return even though by the time it was settled, it was past the 30 day window for returns. It is a pleasant surprise to deal with a company with such good customer service.I will definetely use them in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I'm am a Recreation Therapist at a behavioral health hospital and I use this book for a variety of activities. Very good for all the uses that are in the title: self-esteem, teamwork, communication, anger, and coping skills. However, while the book provides these great activities it doesn't supply the needed debriefing properties that are key for my line of work. Over all very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive!
If this book was titled "40 Activities..." I would give it 4-5 stars. Yes, many if not all of the activities require various materials, but for the most part they are everyday, common materials like straws, pens, paper, paper clips, etc. My problem with this book is the highly repetitive nature of the activities. The premise of the activities are the same with variations so small that it's a stretch to call them separate activities.
For example, in the Self-esteem section so very many of the activities call for items (envelopes, flower petals made from construction paper, balloons, etc.) to be passed around to members of the group in order to write a positive comment about the owner of the item being passed around. So, while the materials used are different the basic premise, as previously stated, is the same.
Here's a perfect example: One activity calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope. Each envelope is then hole-punched and threaded onto a piece of string. The envelopes remain hanging throughout the various group sessions and members are encouraged to write positive comments about their group mates. They then put these comments in the respective member's envelope. Contrastly, another activity, calls for each member to write his/her name on their respective envelope which are then passed around to every other member who then writes a positive comment on a piece of paper and places in the respective member's envelope.
So, as you can see, the activities themselves are decent, but there is simply far too much repetition.
I simply think it would have been more honest to not indicate

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers
Excellent resource for kids activities. It you are a pre-school, k-3 and elementary level teacher.Very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages and large groups
This book has great activities for young children to old adults. It's great for any type of group, small or large. I've used activities in this book for family therapy and elementary classroom settings. I highly recommend it for building positive attitudes and feelings in all types of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tool for anyone working with Children
I am the type of person who loves to create cirriculum for children. As a social worker, I love gathering books like these, because it is instant group therapy/ group cirriculum right at your finger tips. I love how organized the book is. It breaks in down into very interesting and specific categories. The activities are described well and with rationale for each activities given, so that you can determine the appropriateness for your kids. For the clinically struggling children to the most stablized children, you will find a way to fanagle, like I did, activities to fit your and your childrens goals. I found a way to turn a fun genomap activity with candy mentioned in the book into a solution-focused, narrative, introductory parent group. I would've never thought of it without some inspiration from this book. Kudos. ... Read more

The picture of the book clearly indicates that it is the 12th edition. I received the 10th edition and the seller will not take it back even though I wrote to her as soon as I got it. 1-0 out of 5 stars Did not recieve the book I ordered
I was very disappointed about the purchase I made on Amazon.com. The book I had ordered was intercultural communication and the book I had recieved was Essentials of marketing research. I also shot an email of the situation to the one that sold the book and I got no response. So thanks to everyone for wasting my money in these hard times. Most of us are just getting by.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Text is Excellent.
I have taught with several of the major readers on the market: Samovar and Porter's, Nakayama and Martin, and others. This text has the most well written readings and contains articles on many seminal issues, context (Hall), time (Hall), etc. This text has the LEAST blatantly fluff filled articles intended only to titillate and pander to students. Additionally, if you review some of the other texts, you will see that they often have poorly referenced articles and the work is less than scholarly. It is possible to write a chapter for a reader such as this and support your content with support and references. The articles here are interesting, well written, well referenced, and more-grounded in theory and research than a lot of the competition. I recommend it highly. MLK

Perhaps the book is useful for learning about Human Communications, but personally and in my case the book needs a more interactive website to accompany it, or a study guide that helps out with the tests.Questions related to the test for the book, are not simple, and examples are needed so that it makes it easy to follow.I would not have bought this book, if it wasn't because my school required it :(

It is a good text book. Easy to understand and clear on what its' motives are for the learner.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD merits multiple listenings
I must have listened to this CD a half dozen times. Often, when I am upset by the outcome of some conversation in my life, I'll find just the right chapter from this CD and a few minutes later I'll have the "Aha!" insight as to what went wrong in my conversation.

Marshall is hypnotic and enchanting - its worth the price to hear his voice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yes and No

This is an excellent book in many ways. The author is teaching a language of authenticity or of the heart. The purpose of teaching this language is that people will find it easier to express their desires in a way that does not make others defensive so that they may better get their needs met.

The author teaches that it is not good to flatter people or to give them encouragement like "way to go". I have a hard time understanding why this is. He says that things should not be viewed as good and bad but more relative. This theme of relativity is repeated throughout the book as he gives examples of how people can use relativity and empathy to get needs met.

I do not think that ALL things are relative though, and I do not appreciate his example of a battered wife coming to him for help and him teaching her to treat her husband with more empathy as a way to keep from getting beaten as the end all be all solution to her problem. In that situation I still think it is wise for the woman to get out of the situation where she is getting beaten.

I think that alot of this authors tools would be so helpful to law enforcement workers who need to diffuse possibly volatile situations.

The goods in this book far outweigh some of the radical danger zones that I think an extreme relativist could get into with it.

I think it does help to stop looking at everything as good and evil and to recognize that much of behavior is habitual and that habits can be changed. This is an idea that the author bases his workshops, books, tapes, and retreats on. It is an idea from the famous woman philosopher Ruth Benedict. He never once though gives her credit for this idea (as far as I have seen). I think that is kinda sad and borders on plagiarism but I do not think that Ruth Benedict is still alive. I only know of her philosophy from a beginners philosophy course that I took and she was one of the many philosophers on ethics.

The Cd is awful! He just goes on and on with no inflection in his voice and his teeth keep moving around in his mouth sliding off his gums which makes it hard at times to understand him. The cd of the book is about 10 cds of just him droning with no speech skills or organization when it comes to getting to his points.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the world, for me.
A leaf falls. An ordinary event, and yet sometimes it appears not only beautiful but also deeply mysterious.

Listening to Marshall Rosenberg's audio book is simmilar. The principles are simple, and yet I can't even fathom all the ways they could be used to improve life.

5-0 out of 5 stars framework for resolving conflict
When I am in a conflict, there are really just two things I need to do - listen to the person I am talking to, and make requests from him or her. Marshall's NVC provides a framework for both. You may ask "why would I need to have a framework for such simple actions?" The answer is simple - in the heat of a conflict I can easily fall into the trap of blaming or accusation or name-calling, none of which lead to resolution. If I use the NVC framework, I can keep a level head and focus on the solution. These CDs have really improved my interactions in my personal life and at work. The only downside is Marshall's soothing voice, which is too easy to tune out after 5 hours of listening. But if you can listen, the content is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, life-changing lessons!
Life-changing.NVC is a wonderful approach!Highly, HIGHLY recommended!

I grew up in an environment of critical, angry, blaming and disrespectful communication. So, that's what I knew how to do when my needs were not being met:blame others for not acting the 'right' way and 'making' me unhappy.Doesn't give much leverage for changing the situation, does it?I don't like treating people that way, they don't like it either, and those behaviors don't work very well for meeting my needs!I felt helpless, frustrated, guilty and angry, and learned to mostly withdraw and suffer in silence.Very unpleasant.

Marshall's NVC approach shows me how to take responsibility for my emotions and reactions. When I'm unhappy, NVC tells me that my needs are not being met.NVC shows how to consciously figure out what I need, to distinguish which needs are my responsibility vs. needs that are reasonable to ask other people to help with, and how to connect with people in a respectful, loving and gentle way to get my and their needs met in a way that everyone is happy with.

NVC also helps me handle people feeling angry at me:I work with them to understand and communicate their needs in a gentle, respectful way. Then I'm generally glad to help.Very win-win.

I LOVE this approach!THANK you, Marshall!

Also highly recommended:Pema Chodron's "Don't Bite the Hook".

4-0 out of 5 stars Business Communication (Harvard Business Essentials)
It is a very well writtien and structured textbook about business communication. It uses plain English. I just liked it right after I opened the first page.

I have purchased many books from Amazon.com and was very happy and pleased with my dealings with this seller. The book was in excellent condition and arrived sooner then expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential business guide for improving your business communication
All businesspeople can improve their correspondence skills. That's why this short, easily digestible guide belongs in every communicator's bookcase. It might not contain many new ideas, but it certainly emphasizes the time-tested rules of good grammar, organization and editing, while providing tips on overcoming writer's block, framing your fundamental ideas and making successful presentations. getAbstract certainly appreciates the value of straightforward letters and lectures, so we recommend this handy manual to anyone who wants to become a clearer communicator. The foremost idea is that all businesses and careers can benefit from confusion-free correspondence. This little book will help you reach this goal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental
It's really a fundamental book of communication especially on writing, even for a reader, English is not the native language. I can't see special focus on business.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Essential," Yes, But Also Invaluable
This is one of the volumes in the new Harvard Business School Essentials Series. Each offers authoritative answers to the most important questions concerning its specific subject. The material in this book is drawn from a variety of sources which include the Harvard Business School Press and the Harvard Business Review as well as Harvard ManageMentor®, an online service. Each volume is indeed "a highly practical resource for readers with all levels of experience." And each is by intent and in execution solution-oriented.Although I think those who have only recently embarked on a business career will derive the greatest benefit, the material is well-worth a periodic review from by senior-level executives.

Richard Luecke assembles in this book (and in all of the issues in the series) cutting edge thinking. In this volume, he was assisted by a subject adviser, Professor Mary Munter of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and they organize the material within nine chapters. Here are their titles:

1. Good Writing (It Begins with Principles)
2. Start-Up Strategies (Your Launch Point)
3. The First Draft (Getting It Down)
4. Getting It Right ((The Editing Craft)
5. Everyday Writing (Memos, Letters, and E-Mails)
6. Presentations (Timeless Principles)
7. Backstage (Preparing Your Presentation8. Show Time (Making an Effective Delivery)
9. Dialogue (The Ultimate Communication)

If you need assistance with mastering essentials in only one of these areas, I urge you to purchase a copy of this book ASAP. Luecke is an uncommonly clear thinker and writer. Thoughtfully, he provides a "Summing Up" section at the end of each chapter to facilitate a review of key points. There are two other books which I also presume to recommend highly: Kevin Ryan's recently published Write Up the Corporate Ladder and William K. Zinnser's On Writing, 25th Anniversary: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy the older edition, save money
Publishers must think people are complete sheep. The new edition is not critically different from the older copies. The version-mill game is designed to do nothing but eliminate competition from the used book market. (pro tip:the new versions are 99% unchanged, they just want your money)

Also, try switching majors before you graduate, a com degree does not make you any more eminently employable than general studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars IT Book not available on IT gadgets.
I have to say that I'm only buying this book for a course.I am VERY disappointed that I can't get this book about technology on my Kindle.I really hate having to lug around 500+ page books that we will only actually use 100 pages of during class that I could have in digital format.Who knows that could definately save the publisher the reviews stating how out of date this book is in reguards to what technologies we are actually using in business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated to the point of being useless
This book contains some useful information, however, most of the information is horribly outdated. Goes too much into detail about obsolete technologies such as T1 lines and 56K modems. It's fine if they want to cover that for purposes of showing where technology has come from, but it does not go deep into more current technologies. If I wanted a book in networking history, I would have bought one. The latest edition is copyright 2009, but you wouldn't know it from reading the text.

Unfortunately this book is required at my class at DePaul University, so I have no choice but to read and learn about outdated information. If you can avoid a class that assigns this book, I would highly recommend doing that.

I see other reviews of this book are mostly positive, but I cannot see why.

Product Description

An in-depth study of the vital principles from the best-selling Cracking the Communication Code now in workbook form.

Communication between couples has been dissected in thousands of books and articles so why does it remain the number one marriage problem? "Because," says Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, "most spouses don't know that they speak two different languages. They are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won't crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect." Dr. Eggerichs' best-selling book, Love and Respect, launched a revolution in how couples relate to each other. Now with the Cracking the Communication Code companion workbook, the message of this hardcover trade book can be studied and applied whether for a group or for individual couples. The result will be better communication, mutual understnding, and a successful godly marriage.

3-0 out of 5 stars One Trick Pony
This book is a follow up to the book Eggerichs wrote called "Love and Respect" which demonstrates how husbands are energized in their marriage relationships with demonstrations of respect and wives are energized by demonstrations of love. My wife and I found that when we put the principles of this book into practice we had much less conflict--but obviously it is still dependent on us going against our selfish nature which wants to punish the other spouse for unsatisfactory behaviors. From a pragmatic view both this book and Love and Respect are worth reading if a couple has a commitment to applying the principles.

This being said I think that Cracking the Communication Code is not a well written book. It seems like a compilation of "B" material that Eggrichs had left over from "Love and Respect".Intellectually he treats his readers like idiots in the way that he repeats the concepts over and over. Boring stories, boring illustrations, and beating to death the same concept of husbands loving their wives (through actions) and wives respecting their husbands. In the introduction Eggrichs says that you can skip the first chapter if you already read "Love and Respect" because it is simply a review... which is what my wife and I did. But in chapter 2 lo and behold the same boring testimony of how Eggrichs came to the incredible "Love and Respect" revelation. Eggrichs is a one trick pony.

My recommendation: read either "Love and Respect" or "Cracking the Communication Code" with your spouse but don't waste your time on both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Marriage information I have ever read
I loved this book. It has been very useful, biblical and relivant to todays marital issues. Even if only one spouse reads the book you can get so much out of it. It helpped me turn my marriage around and my husband still hasn't read it. This is a must read!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cracking the Communication Code: The Secret to Speaing Your Mate's Language

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for me
Audio book review: I've listened to many tapes on this topic, lots of videos. Not much result - till now. Ok, some of the ideas are similar in other books, but the presentation to me hit the spot. The light came on. It helped explain to me why I always back off instead of engage, and why unconditional is the commitment and only option to make it work. Still not sure why God made this so complicated; why we are opposites; but a hint comes from the book - God made marriage as practice for the heavenly relationship we will have with him in heaven. We are not the same as God, just like we are not the same as our mate. Its even more important to get this mastered now with our mate, to mirror the one when we get to heaven. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Sent the Book
After ordering this book I had to wait to no avail for this person to at least put the book in the mail. It never happened. The book never arrived, incredibly disappointing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall Review - More than Technical Writing
This is a response I sent to the Publisher about one portion of the book, but it will give you an idea of my overall review.

I have written many technical documents in the military and for companies in technical information and have found that some of the information in your book can be misleading; for instance, making a technical document personal. Giving the pretense of the tone as 'conversational' is in of itself a bit hard to swallow. Technical writings are to convey technical directions, how to operate something, how to prepare for something, what to do in case of, things along this line.

Turn to page 240, Guidelines, 3rd bullet, "Use, and informal tone - writing to be conversational?" Technical documents are not about personalities, or tones of conversation. Technical documents convey information in a scientific factual way. They are unilateral, not bilateral. Tones tend to lead toward a persona. Technicality has no persona, it is an inanimate non-tangible, though as written, it gains substantiality on the script, but in and of itself, it is information.

Now go to page 216, "Ways in which style goes wrong." Near the bottom of the page, "Sounds stuffy and impersonal." Your thoughts at the beginning of the page state that the document needs to be readable. This is very important, I agree, but why must you state this here, when if the book should be predictable in teaching `technical writing' only, you would never have to approach this subject matter.

I think this book is more than a technical writing instruction; it is a writing course of all types of styles complete with grammar emphasis. This is a book for the masses, instead of a teaching source for "Technical Writing."

In my opinion, your book brings many other types of writings such as creative and personal forms such as documentary to the readers mind and unloading the cart of many other features and tones that are not conducive to the learning of technicality, but could cause disruption in the minds of the student and the teacher.

I believe also that you all have introduced pluralism and diversity of writing techniques that cause deception to subject matter.
Perhaps there is too much personalization introduced in this text. What if the technicality wassimple and to the point by concentrating on the old foundations and introducing some new techniques with the age of computers, internet and electronics without personalizing it, wouldn't that serve the purpose?
