5-0 out of 5 stars non violent comunication
just an incredible book to have in everyone's household. just imagine if we all could communicate in more productive way without all of this chaos in relationships with spouses? children? family members? co-workers? Wow!! what a better place we would live in!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Return To
Wow. This book has helped me immensely in my personal relationships.By taking a step back from daily frustrations, disappointments, and stressors, and re-examining the purpose of my own and others' "needs," this book has helped me to listen more deeply, act more genuinely, and find acceptance in difficult situations.Rosenberg's done an amazing job in writing a clear, concise book that is helping bring more compassion and patience to the world.Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kathryn Mayton, The Work and NVC forever
I love NVC.I teach at a community college and used it in a class for Adult High School and also taught it to staff.I felt unsure of myself and thought it would be better to train to do this in person with Marshall. However, insecure or not, Marshall's techniques DO work with anyone in my life, when I use them. One idea of Marshall's was adopted by a fellow teacher in her classes with great success.A former teenage student came to me and said she wanted to be able to talk to everyone in her life like this, but she can't because no one she knows talks this way and they'll think she's nuts.sigh.I also taught Byron Katie's "The Work" and think these two things have a lot in common and could be used together with great success.

Marshall's book is easy to read, understand, and apply, although as I said, the application is not the way we do it normally. I used exercises in my class from companion books based on Marshall's work like, "The Compassionate Classroom" and got so much from them as well.Other books written by Marshall, specifically, "Speak Peace in a World of Conflict" and "Life-Enriching Education" need fresh examples and material.I do so wish that schools would adopt Marshall's NVC.I wanted my daughter to have an experience in school of being listened to with empathy, but it rarely happens.sigh.

These books on NVC would be so helpful to anyone who is tired of complaining about relationships that don't work and wants to create an alternative.Go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and delightfully straightforward
This is one of those books that's potentially life-changing.Its conclusions, exercises, and recommendations are delightfully simple, and in some ways even obvious - except - the obvious isn't always so obvious, is it?

One example that really struck home for me was the concept of positive feedback.Instead of just giving someone a compliment - "Wow, great work!" or "I really appreciate your help" - say specifically what was great about it or what you appreciated."Without your help in the yard last weekend, I wouldn't have been able to get the fruit trees pruned in time to get all the branches out for curbside pickup.I really want to thank you for helping me meet that deadline."

This is only one of the truly meaningful ways that Nonviolent Communication can help you make a difference in your relationships with others and can help you really get your requests and needs *heard,* *understood,* and *acted on* by others. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
I ordered the book with the free saver shipping. I was going to pay for the shipping so that it could get here faster. But at the end of the order said that it would get here by the date I needed it. And it was delivered faster then the date guaranteed. The book was exactly like the description. New and still in the plastic. Very satisfied customer.

My book came to me two days before my class started. It was in the condiction that was stated. It was in better condiction than the books in the bookstore on campus. Thanks for being speedy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, Bloated, But Useful
This textbook is expensive. I think the price is absurd.

However, the information contained is worthwhile. Guffey could have condensed a lot of material.

Things that work in the book's favor are the checklists at the end of sections and a summary of the chapter. Small useful side menus abbreviating useful terminology or steps are littered through out the book; and they are worthwhile to review and use.

Condense the text and make it more affordable. I say to Guffey stop aiding Publishers the in grifting of student's pockets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Just what i needed for my college class, nothing is wrong with the book and seems to be well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to read useful book and not only for Business
I always thought I was good at communication until I read this book (text book really). I was particularly impressed by the examples of emails that on the surface look fine until the writer points out the loop holes. Despite its title this book comes in hand for many situations well outside business. I have also used my newly acquired skills in academic, political and philanthropic forums and received very positive feedback from colleagues who noticed a change. Buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book
I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion.

Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it.My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a communication problem, they are responsible for writing memos and reports to both the client and me.

However, I guess that the biggest endorsement is the number of students who do not resell this book at the end of the semester.I have had several tell me that this is one of the few books that they will take with them when they graduate because they view it as a good reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full of It
This book is choc-full of useful techniques for good, solid business communication. The samples are well thought-out and are very true to life. However, the questions, especially the ethics questions do not have any answers provided.Even the instructor copy doesn't have any of the answers, so effectively it boils down to your opinions and whether or not you can defend them.Yee Hah, just like real life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Communication Today
The book combines much useful infomation. Various examples and appendixes are helpful in ordinary (but important) questions. It is a straight-to-the-point book.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of paper!
Reviewer John Zabroski hits on some great points and I have a few more to add.
The book definitely contains some useful information. This is why I give it two stars. Still, the amount of fluff, bloat and redundancy is incredible. It is painful to read through page after page where information is repeated.

For concepts that would need a one inch paragraph for their explanation, the authors occupy a page. The nature of business communication is to be short and to the point. The authors completely fail to convey this essential feature. This book should have comprised of 200 pages maximum, not counting the appendices. Instead it turned into an almost 600 page monstrosity. In my opinion the price of paper is too low. This is why there is so much of it wasted.

In some instances, things can turn outright ridiculous. For example, look at page 269. In the fifth line of the first paragraph the authors list objectivity as a trait of credibility. Then they encourage the reader to exceed this by "Being Objective" (the sixth bullet below the paragraph). Give me a break!

1-0 out of 5 stars How Did This Book Make It To The 8th Edition?
If you are a college professor or instructor, please do not use this book.A far more accessible and technically correct book for your students would be Dale Carnegie's The Leader In You (How To Win Friends and Influence People). While Carnegie's book does not have "reading exercises" like a traditional textbook might, your students will get far more out of reading his book than Bovee's.

I am a senior in college and my Communication for Business Professionals course is using this textbook as the primary learning resource.I feel this book was a waste of my money due to the number of content faults in the 8th Edition.I have not reviewed nor read previous editions.

A major gripe I have with this book is incorrect statements, a polite way of saying the author did not fact-check and proof-read their work.Again, this book is in its 8th Edition and the current layout of this book is discouraging considering the book is supposed to be about communication.I accumulated a list of content faults regarding this book, and will try to share some of them with you to help dissaude you from wasting your money on this book:

(1) Indirectly referring to the United States as a high-context culture, stating that high-context cultures prefer very strict schedules.A few pages earlier, the book contradicts this statement by directly detailing how the United States is a low-context culture.

(2) The book constantly mixes up its point-of-view on what the best way to approach others is.Earlier on, it suggests its important to consider your own feelings first.A few chapters later, it scalds you for putting yourself before others and on several occasions reminds you that "earlier" in the text it referred to how important talking in terms of others desires is.What is the better way?Well, having read Dale Carnegie's book on leadership, I can tell you the best approach is always to "bait the hook to suit the fish" as Carnegie would say.In other words, address your audiences needs before you take into account your own feelings.

Overall, the book tries to be all-encompassing and fails. To cover communication in detail, you cannot be general and all-encompassing.You have to be specific and follow a model for communication.

This book also does not appropriately address large issues in communication, such as PERCEPTION.In business, perception is everything and can lead to you trying to negotiate too hard and costing your company dollars. There is a famous anecdote of Japanese and American businessman sitting across the table from one another negotiating a business deal. After the American finishes discussing his business proposal, he is unnerved by the silence of the Japanese negotiators to the point where he believes something is wrong. The end result, and conclusion of this anecdote, is the American perceived the need to devoid the silence by talking more.In the process, the American lowered his demands and the Japanese negotiators then agreed once the American backed himself into a corner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Communication Today
I really liked the book.I got it pretty fast and with no problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reference
Although I owned the 6th edition, I can say this book is a must have for everyone. Actually I was a silent person and everytime I wanted to talk, I was a bit trouble sometimes, and this book has help me communicating easier, whether it is business or general.

With this book, started with easy to understand short-theory, move into non-verbal communications, divided by step-by-step preparations, suggestions, how-to-practice, then into verbal communications with letters, from routine & persuasive messages into how to deliver bad news (one of the hardest task), how to create report, how to make visual aids, how to make presentations, and how to make a job letter.

One of greatest feature is it provides many sample letters include few other culture or other countries' style letters, and along with it, there's a reason why he or she write that. There's also some tips how to write in e-mail, or make recorded voice for telephone systems.

This is a must have for everyone, include those who never attended this lecture. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Technical Writing Textbook I Have Seen
Being very nervous about my first semester as a technical writing instructor, I pored over about half-a-dozen different books to get ideas and to see which textbook would be best to teach in the future. In spite of its shocking price, this book won hands-down.

This book (even more than the 7th edition) does an excellent job of taking students through the process of creating documents, helping students to understand the parts of the document and what each part does, and also gives some helpful sample documents. Unlike many technical writing texts which I have seen, both ethical and rhetorical issues are treated effectively and simply, while a good balance is struck between nuts-and-bolts grammar and formatting advice and discussions of audience awareness, credibility, and tone.

This book also has a number of helpful "Guidelines" boxes, wherein specific, concrete advice for particular writing tasks is given in a straightforward bulleted list. There is also some useful material on the companion website.

Overall, aside from the high price and the sometimes too-intense use of color and formatting features to draw attention to every little thing, this book is extremely useful for aspiring technical communicators.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellenct book to technical writting

4-0 out of 5 stars better then most I've read for sure
This book was better then most I've read.It seems to give you some very good skills to apply to your marriage/relationship that do work.Yes, marriage takes two...but it does seem to help.I love just the smile tactic. That does work...you may have to force yourself to do it...but it definately works to put your spouse in a good mood when they first walk in the door.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book but....
but I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the analogies (such as describing why we fight as being because our 'self esteem bank account' is low and we want to make a deposit in it by arguing with a loved one). I did find some helpful hints about ways to diffuse an argument, but I did feel like most of the time the author wants you to 'give in' when arguing because he feels it is better to be loved than be right. I didn't feel like the author really gave any advice on how to handle serious issues where giving in isn't an option. For example, if your spouse is drinking too much and becoming belligerent should you decide that you like being loved more than being right and chose to get over the situation by making a 'deposit' in your spouses self esteem bank account so that they feel better about themselves and are less likely to fight? But to be fair, overall, the book is well written and easy to identify with thanks to the author's many examples, be they personal or from couples he has counseled. One of the best pieces of advice from the book was about calling a time out while arguing during which you spoon or cuddle with each other for five minutes and then resume your argument. Just like the author said in his book, when my husband and I tried this, we found that we no longer wanted to argue after the cuddling. And while the first minute of cuddling was awkward due to the argument, it really was effective in calming both of us down and putting things back in perspective. In my opinion this book is good if you are looking for a way to get over or completely avoid small arguments, but is not very helpful if you are looking to facilitate communication/get past arguments about more major issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This book is fantastic for both partners of the couple to read!! Easy, quick reading and very insightful!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book. Hands-on, easy, to-the-point relationship rescue.
When I purchased this book, I chose it as an impluse buy in addition to another communications book that I thought would be great. Instead, after reading only a couple of pages of this book, I was floored with how quickly this short book targeted common communication problems with couples, and had easy solutions that you could start implementing right away. We have used the techniques in this book and find it very instrumental in saving our relationship. Our communication is much more what we mean to say now, and we have less tension in our commuunications. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely One of Many Have-to-Read Books
I am a Divorce Mediator in Oklahoma and recommend this book to my clients who are not divorcing, yet have issues conveying their needs or desires.Whether it is help with the home duties or consideration of situations that arise, this helps encourage couples to view each other as partners/friends/lovers.This book tunes couples into more intimacy by connecting emotionally.Doing little things matter most. ... I am an instructor for a local college.I selected the Essntials of Business Communication as the textbook for my Business Communications course after working with it in a previous class. It is the best organized text I have found with step by step instructions for students to readily grasp the techniques used in modern business documents. The book covers e-mails, memos, a variety of business letters, reports, business proposals, resumes, letters of application and communication skills for oral presentations and interviews.Lectures, examples, assignments, and grammatical challenges are pre-designed for the instructor's use, making this a turn-key system for teaching communication skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes Indeed.
Yes indeed this book was/is (I still crack it open)very helpful to me. Before I read this book, or took the class that used this book, I was a very bad speller. My grammer was poor and my writing technique was even worse. If this book helped me I am sure it will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for college and your career
Finally, a complete text that is always useful.I have read this book over and over... each time learning something new. It's great if you need a complete and extensive description or a quick overview. This book willgo from your college backpack to the desk of your new exciting job! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for personal communication, poor for professional.
I was recently looking for books to improve my communication, particularly at work. I purchased this book, as well as "What got you here won't get you there".

This book (Messages...) is far fluffier, more touchy-feely, and has less professional content than What got you here...

For personal and family communication, this book may be best, but perhaps it's just not my style of book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Practical discussion of communication concepts at various levels. It has helped me to explain communication skills to clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beneficial to Everyone
This is a well written book that should benefit everyone. The book explains the importance of effective communication skills for success in business (a large corporation, a small company, or even a home-based business) or in the home, with friends, in relationships and anywhere else. The author methodically explains the communication process including the message, the channel through which the message is conveyed, the receiver, feedback, the context of the communication and the barriers to effective communication and ways to overcome them.

For example, the author highlights the fact that in verbal communication, an active dialogue is engaged with the use of words. At the same time, however, non-verbal communication takes place, relying on nonverbal cues, such as gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, even clothing and personal space and how they influence interpretation of messages, including how the message is delivered.. The need to be mindful of cultural differences in communicating was explained, for example when using or interpreting nonverbal cues. The need to pay close attention to your tone of voice, even your voice's overall loudness and its pitch was highlighted.

The book also covers public speaking and how you can make better presentations, for example, by keeping the message clear and simple, being prepared, being vibrant and natural when delivering the message.

Other very important and interesting subjects covered including the importance of being assertive, having good listening skills, and being an effective negotiator, among other topics. The author reinforces his message with exercises that you can use as a self-help tool to improve your communication skills.

All-in-all, an excellent book that is highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and detailed
This is a very thorough and detailed book, which presents the topic from a cognitive point of view.I found it a bit heavy on case studies and slanted toward cognitive approaches, but there is still a lot to learn here.

If you are looking for books to complement this, I highly recommend Crucial Conversations and Difficult Conversations. The Communications Skill Book sort of gives the lay of the land and some essential skills. The other books flesh out some areas where this book could be a bit stronger.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic book, just take a look at the contents.
I cant say im a complete extrovert at this moment, but thanks to this book I have opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about communication in a most delightful way. The title describes communication as a skill, something I personally haven't even begun to understand yet until I picked this book up and since then my skills have multiplied enormously. The book contains all the essential information you need and more. Just take a look at the contents. This is one of those books that will never be out-dated, Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sequel to Love & Respect
This series (Love & Respect and Cracking the Communication Code) are very convictng and life changing.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book, but a bit long-winded
I read Emerson's previous book "Love And Respect" 7 times, just because it was so good and it touched my heart deeply. The principles in his book are so profound and important that it was no surprise that Emerson decided to write a follow-up book called "Cracking the Communication Code: The Secret to Speaking Your Mate's Language". The material in this book goes into great detail about the inner workings of conflict and Emerson picks apart typical marital arguments and shows the reader exactly the dynamics that are at play.

I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it is rather long-winded in places and because this book comes across to me as Emerson's exhaustive exposition and commentary on the core principles and crux of the "Love And Respect" book. In other words, there isn't a lot of NEW material.

Having said that, I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book. If you haven't read either of these two books, then I'd suggest the "Love And Respect" book first, but if you buy this one, you get a "mini-Love And Respect" recap "book-within-a-book" in the first few chapters.

Good job Emerson! I would love to attend one of your conferences when you are in my area!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring book.
After reading the book, I realize that marriage is a spiritual path. Marriage is a relationship that tests me to reach a higher spiritual plane and to connect with God. I really liked Emerson's prayer of commitment. I don't normally buy Christian books and I had to "decode" a few things for myself to so I could relate to it, but after reading it, I have more appreciation for the nature of man and the nature of woman and how to respect and appreciate our differences. I also have more appreciation for the teachings of Jesus. Thank you Emerson!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Reading
I've not read the entire book yet, but am anxious to do so. This, in my opinion, is a must read for every couple wanting to strengthen their marriage. Good basic "stuff" we all need to know.

2-0 out of 5 stars More of the same...wordy
More of the same... I would stop at Love and Respect, the first book. This book is too wordy and seems to go nowhere. No real new information. I sold it back right after I bought it, but I kept Love & Respect. Don't bother. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand
The business data communications and networking book is very to read and understand. The bold and italicized writing makes it easier to comprehend the communication being presented. The information is up to date and I'd recommend this book to anyone who requires a clear understanding of business data communications and networking

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite there.....
I purchased this book for a class I was taking. It was the required text for the class.I have 15 years experience in network design and administration and recently returned to school to earn a second degree.I found this text to be overly technical for its intended audience, and would not recommend it to any instructor. Also the accompanying test bank from which an instructor can pull quiz/test questions are absolutely horrible and only serve to confuse students trying to learn.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth It
I'll admit, communication theory made my head hurt as I had the daunting task of taking several theorists, study their theories, then present the information to the class in plain english.Sometimes it was difficult, but I learned a lot.

This book is really awesome (after the fact), and I'm sure my classmates feel the same way.

But here's the funny thing: it's been a year since I've taken that class, and I can still remember the theorist, the theory, and sometimes I go around watching behavior and I'm able to call out the theory and some of the traits expressed in that theory. That's thanks to Em for making the text plain and sometimes simple.

Also, my teacher was just good.

If you apply yourself and attempt to open your mind you'll like the book regardless of the price.I still have my old blue one, although there is a newer edition (a green one). *wink*

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
Somebody complained that this text is overpriced.I like a low price as much as the next person, but this text is well worth the cost!My other communications texts literally put me to sleep trying to slog through them. Not so with this one!It is engaging, easy to read, and entertaining.Em Griffin writes about the theories in ways that stick in your head so that you can keep things straight a little better. His writing style is clear and doesn't leave you re-reading sentences to make sure you know what they really said.He also incorporates cartoons and film lists that illustrate theory components.

I highly recommend this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and practical textbook!
I used an earlier edition while in graduate school and found it very helpful.Griffin has boiled down and concisely described about 30 or so communication theories. What's more, he does so in practical terms and concepts that college students can easily grasp and apply. While I believe that this text is more applicable to the undergrad than grad student, it is an excellent reference andtext. As a professor of communication, I now use it in my undergrad courses on communication theory.

And by the way, what's all this [stuff] about liberals and communications??? I am a liberal (bleeding heart variety, and proud of it), I teach communication, and I think the book is valuable, candid, and balanced....

2-0 out of 5 stars terribly overpriced

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text book ever
I can't believe I was forced to buy this book from my school for an Oral Communications class. The book has almost no bearing on communication in an office or business setting. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro text
This book is wonderfully accessible and serves as a great introduction to interpersonal communication and preparation for upper-level coursework on relational communication.I have used this textbook for 4 years at a community college and 2 years at a state university and the students have always rated this textbook very highly.Although they do state that the chapters are a bit long, they feel it is very accessbile and easy to understand. The students also report that they like the examples/blurbs from other students that pepper the chapters, and many of them bring up those examples or Wood's personal examples in relation to their own lived experiences during class discussion.

Thanks to the students' positive responses to the text, I have been able to explore more options in teaching besides reiterating the text in lecture format and have developed quite an array of exercises and projects that push my students to understand some difficult concepts better, to learn more sophisticated materials, and to improve their interpersonal communication skills through practice.

I praise Julia Wood for creating a textbook that allows students to be in charge of their own learning and teachers to go outside the expected routine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, but tedious
This text was required reading for an interpersonal communications course I took.It provided a ton of valuable information, very helpful insight, sample conversations, and examples which helped me to acctually apply what was learned. However, the writing style was highly repetitive, and each new section repeated earlier ones then built on them instead of starting with completely new information. While this did help me learn better, it was also somewhat boring.I would still recommend this book for it's ability to make abstract terms much more tangible.Hope this helps!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a reader friendly book.
Ms. Wood is intelligent and provides a lot of good information in thistextbook. This was chosen for the course I teach before I took theposition and if I had my way, we would have found a different book.It isnot that the information is bad, it is just that Ms. Wood becomes veryrepetitive.About half of the first six chapters seem to drag on and mostof the time restates the same thing from an earlier chapter or from thesame chapter.I like what she has done with discussing multiculturalissues, but some of it seems to be patronizing to the reader.I thinkanother edition should be done and making the chapters shorter and morereadable (Chapter 1 goes on for 78 pages -- which lost my attention, so Iknow my students had the same problem.)In the course review, the textbookgenerally gets a poor or below average rating.I can not give you arecommendation, as I am in the middle of searching for a better option. ...
