1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a nickel
Very disappointing.I could only get through the first chapter or two, concerning intrapersonal communication. The author constructed some analogy concerning a lake and how to fill it.I am sure the author thought this a cleaver analogy, but for the reader it is pratically worthless. If you are serious about learning something, anything, don't read this book.If I were the editor of this book, I would be embarrassed to have let it be published.

I am no expert, but I am in a business that requires considerable communication skills.

1-0 out of 5 stars This will teach me!
A dazzling journey through the tediously obvious!

My mistake buying the book though. I should have noticed that there were only 3 reviews and that all three were raves - usually a suspicious sign. Written in the most irksome PC jargon (eg. vapid notions such as "meaningful interpersonal relationships" Yikes! I thought ALL interpersonal relationships were, by definition `meaningful'). The book isn't even properly proof-read: eg. Page 80, "Do you possess these problem habits and to what degree? - Giving into internal noise", "into internal noise"? Huh?

Perkinsmoves effortlessly from one banality to the other as she lays out her pearls one by one. Dig this for profundity you would never have guessed unless Perkins told you (page 82): "Listening behaviors: looking directly at the speaker, body is facing the speaker, using responsive nonverbal communication, maintaining an open pleasant facial expression, reducing intrapersonal noise (this last concept is not in the index so I'll simply have to use my fantasy - finger tapping? burping? flatulence? Or are these `interpersonal?), tracking main points, using your eyes, ears, mind, and memory" (gotta remember that one next time! "Hey, Egbert, don't forget to use your ears next time you listen!"). And then, next to these gems, we have the so-called "non-listening behaviors". These include, "Consistently looking away from the speaker, allowing intrapersonal noise to take over (here we go again - finger tapping? burping? flatulence? Or are these `interpersonal?), interrupting, paying attention to mental and physical distractions in the environment, fidgeting, nonexpressive face and body, reading, watching TV, and other distractions, paying attention to the speaker's vocal or physical limitations instead of the message". Yawn, yawn. I could get my 11-year old kid to make a more interesting list than this.

One can literally open any page of the book to find similar superficial nonsense. Particularly amusing is the sagacity contained in the boxes dotted all over the book with a little light bulb with PS on it: "It's time to realize that the only person you are competing with is yourself and it's never too late to start your personal race towards self-fulfillment". Gosh, now who would have thought that! Here was dumbo me thinking that Maslow's messianic self-actuation claptrap had been long ago buried and forgotten! Here's another, "You cannot have and keep what you are not" (where did she get that one from? Frank Zappa?). But hey, she even mentions Hegel! Talk about putting a saddle on a cow!

Anyway, I'm giving this one a 1 star as a token of thanks to Amazon for allowing me to learn a lesson for the future. Read the `look inside' info carefully next time. I didn't and literally paid the price. That `race towards self-fulfillment' nonsense was even accessible in the `surprise me' link!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read for the workplace
P.S. Perkins' book The Art and Science of Communication: Tools for Effective Communication in the Workplace is a quick read for employers and employees to improve their communication skills.Perkins addresses and separates the seven fundamental components of efficient communication in each chapter of the book. The reader can than find or identify which component they wish to improve upon without having to read the whole book; example chapters include Interpersonal, Intercultural, Small group, and Public communication.I would recommend this book for all levels of communication theory because it covers the basics while providing workshop ideas that are can be easily created as part of the work day.The books broad context can incorporate any professional environment and helpful Q&A sections bring the material down to a personal level that is easily digested by readers. Perkins' ability to organize and simplify the content makes The Art and Science of Communication... a standard text in any workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone that wants to improve their communication
This book is very easy to follow. I took so much away from this book. If you want to improve your communication with your family, business partners, or friends, this book will definitely help you do it. Putting things into words that makes so much sense, you'll wonder why you never put it in that perspective before. I was preparing for a speech I had to give and this books helped make that speech so much better than it would have otherwise been. Everyone should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Workplace Communication
The Art and Science of Communication delves into the science of communication offering straightforward, universal patterns that reveal the keys to communication success. This book will guide readers as it clearly presents the connection between the systemic power of the word and self-fulfillment.

It combines valuable communication expertise with practical, universal principles that produce life skills. These life skills are what individuals, couples, families, groups, teams, organizations, people are desperate for. A personalized program to help you:

·Bridge the gender gap·Negotiate power dynamics·Talk to teens, children, and elders·Build intimate communication·Manage emotions in difficult conversations·Be assertive·Learn to say no·Master the art of persuasion

When we asked Dr. Matt McKay—coauthor of Messages: The Communication Skills Book, New Harbinger publisher, and psychologist in private practice—how many of his couples clients had communication problems, he answered without hesitation that it is 100%.

Simply put, skill at communicating with others is the single largest determinant of anyone’s happiness, and success. Rewarding and lucrative careers, strong and lasting friendships, meaningful and satisfying romance all hang on this one uniquely human ability.

The original Messages taught you to listen well, disclose honestly, and express truthfully while communicating with others. This workbook helps youapply these skills specifically to different aspects of your life. Step-by-step worksheets, fill-in exercises, and case stories help you avoid communication pitfalls and make long-lasting, life-enhancing changes. The workbook extends the techniques of Messages to a wide range of situations: Exercises teach you to communciate with teens and children. They help facilitate partner understanding by exploring gender communication differences. The workbook guides you through challengingcommunication situations like talking through a power dynamic with a bossor a subordinate, with elders, or with people of different cultures. An important chapter applies emotion-regulation techniques from dialectical behavior therapy to communication, teaching you to express yourself effectively even when feeling emotionally unstable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A launching pad for new emotional acuity
This is an excellent book for practicing and beginning to utilize the skills one learned in the original Messages. If you're feeling a bit abandoned and at a loss for how to start integrating the knowledge you gained in the original book into your life, the workbook picks up where it left off.The Messages Workbook puts emotional communication in context. The exercise in chapter eleven about identifying irrational fears was surprisingly effective; the mere act of acknowledging my emotions helped me discern which ones had any real merit.
"If you don't communicate well, you are always at a disadvantage. When you fail to express your ideas clearly and forcefully, other people's ideas prevail. When you can't express your feelings, your feelings get hurt. When you can't ask for what you want, you don't get it." p.1

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowers your communication skills
This book helps anyone to improve his communication skills, it will help u understand people more, I loved mostly these chapters:Hidden Agendas, Blocks to listening, and the Transactional Analysis (the Child/parent/adult thing). I used the skills in this book, they made me understand beyond a conversation, what is really said and why it is said. It will also help u identify what keeps you from delivering your message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion to Messages.
As the cliche says, practice makes perfect. The book helps us hone and improve our communications skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This book was a good investment, but I felt I could have spent more time working on my communication skills. Some of the practice sections require an investment of a day or more, or even another person involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "lifesaver" book
I bought the book some time ago, and sincerely, I start to read it last week.I read "making contact" chapter first, because I start a Network Marketing business, and "approach" (making contact) is a must in business. Well, that chapter change my mind in approachpeople. They (autors), say what you think when approach people,(and it is true), and how to change that think, for a better approach. That chapter alone is worth the price that I paid. I still finish the book but I am very excited to say that if you want to communicat better with anybody that book will done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource to manage conflict
Chapters are organized well and easy to follow. Theories are discussed, conflict is defined, communication techniques are suggested included confronting techniques, many examples are provided, and the processes are explained well in an easy to read book that will help the reader. One entire chapteraddresses the forgiveness and reconciliation process after the conflict that other books fail to discuss or only touch. The final chapter touches briefly on the mediator process. I purchased the book for a class but it is a book I will hold on to. The chapters are laid out so the book can serve as a "how to" guide during/after a conflict in the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars What all Physicians should read during training. . . and after.
Communicating serious news and dealing with end-of-life issues are poorly taught in medical school, but something that is constantly present in practice. This book is a quick read, but a great resource in how to have those discussions go well. As we are constantly dealing with death, we easily forget how new, personal and foreign a serious situation is to the individual patient we see. This book walks through discussions about breaking serious news, giving a prognosis, to discussing code status while being mindful of where the patient is at. I can't advocate this enough as needing to be a book in every doctor's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I was fortunate enough to attend a communication skills training retreat with the authors and it changed the way I practice medicine.I was moved to write this review because the book so effectively distills their years of experience as clinicians and educators into a readable and practical format. It serves as an ideal refresher and reference for those who have taken part in their workshops.More importantly, though, the text is accessible enough that it could be used by anyone of any discipline who deals with seriously ill patients, even if you never thought of communication skills as something that could be taught!Written in the style of "Difficult Conversations" and "Getting to Yes" the authors have structured the book to make it a quick, high yield read. They use tables to highlight "what happened" in a conversation and "what we can learn" then end each section with "the bottom line" and a few tips to help you in "maximizing your learning."This material made me a much better communicator which has not only helped my patients but has also made my practice infinitely more fulfilling. This book offers the same opportunity to anyone who reads it which I find very exciting for the future of medicine.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for EVERY clinician
I have been a palliative care physician for 5 years now, and I was amazed at how much this book taught me.I appreciate its straightforward language and found that I was learning new communication techniques from the very first page (yes, really!).I think this book is a great resource for any clinician regardless of their level of expertise, experience, or training. From the novice to the expert - from medical student to attending physician - and for every discipline - this book should be required reading for anyone who deals with patients with serious illness and their families. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Critical Review
The book, Mastering Communication At Work by Ethan F. Becker and Jon Wortmann discusses and demonstrates different techniques and theories on how to lead, manage, and influence others in the workplace.Though the book touches on a lot of important aspects of how to perform excellent communication skills at work, there are a few critiques I would like to mention, in my opinion.
The examples mentioned in the book in every chapter seem to be more like stories.I am more of a deductive person however I can be open-minded while reading books.I found myself drifting off a lot while reading examples rather than picking up on specific criteria.I was able to get a clear picture and understanding of each chapter but I felt that there should have been more specific examples that got to the point instead of long drawn out examples that at times were more than 2-3 pages long.
Also, the examples and stories demonstrated throughout the book seemed repetitive.A lot of examples were long and that is ok if there is plenty of relevant information to get across. Not only were the examples extremely unfamiliar, they seemed to be saying pretty much the same thing throughout the example.
Finally, I noticed the use of "she" and "he" being used.I thought this to be a little unsettling because "she" and "he" was never referring to a person. When there were statements being expressed, instead of using a universal term, such as "they" or what not, sometimes "she" would be used and other times "he" would be used.I did not quite understand that unless I missed something.
I have just mentioned my critique of the book.Though it is my opinion, others may feel differently.I am a deductive communicator so that may be the reason for the way I feel about certain things about the book however, as far as the book in whole, it was very influential to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Initially, I picked this book up for my husband as a gift for his birthday. He raved about how he was able to apply the techniques from this book into real life situations immediately.Being a part of a large team that was spread out over seas, it was important that communication between groups be clear and effective.

I was skeptical at first, but I have to admit this book has helped me round out my professional communication skills.I found the book very easy to follow and understand.I was able to apply what I had learned in the book immediately and it's already paid off for me

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some insight!
Finally a book that deals with the real issue of communicating at work! This has helped me deal/communicate with some co-workers that I've ignored for years!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Communication at Work
I was initially prompted to read the book because one of the co-authors, Ethan Becker, was secured to facilitate a staff development workshop at the college where I work.Reading the book was a good use of my time because it is loaded with practical tips to motivate yourself and others, to run effective meetings, to give and receive criticism and keep it in perspective, and to master effective presentation techniques. These are but a few of the concepts that Becker and Wortmann so aptly deliver and discuss in their book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful how to...
This book is an excellent compilation of stories, activities and practices that the reader can begin to apply immediately. Unlike most books that serve as a reference and stop after providing basic theories, this book dives right in to the "how" and empowers you to begin bridging your communication gaps.

After reading chapters of "Mastering Communication at Work" I began practicing based on the suggested activities, and noticed that I was learning a lot more than I had expected. The true measurement of success started when others at work were taking notice and sharing their excitement in regards to our improved communications.

Since sharing these exercises with my teams, we know refer to the book for reference on a frequent basis. Well worth the time to read, but don't stop there...take action! ... Read more

I found this text at the the best price on Amazon. It came as promised and was in better condition than I had anticipated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mass Media
Great! Book was exactly as described. ;) came rite in time, i give 5 stars!!

2-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT however....
The book itself is great! However the copy I received when purchasing is not. I received an Examination Copy.

For those that do not know what an examination Copy is... An Examination Copy is a book that's sent out from the publisher for free to teachers and other people in an attempt to sell the book. Upon sending this book out to potential customers, it is suppose to be on a basic level of understanding that the book will not be sold. The reason being is because it takes away from well deserved royalties that belong to the author and publisher. Someone profited from the book I purchased where the publisher/author has not. This is slightly disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality College Text!
I ordered this book for my daughter's intro mass com class. She loved it and I loved the price!I will order all of her textbooks through Amazon! You saved me a mint!

1-0 out of 5 stars Earlier editions were better
I started using an earlier version of this book three years ago for my college mass
media class. I decided it was time to update-a media text should be current. A big mistake. My students liked the 8th edition and so did I. The 9th edition is disjointed and needs a great deal of supplemental material. This has been a long academic year. I will pick another book for next semester. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow response to customer contact.
Received the book in good time, however, it was not the edition I was under the impression I was supposed to receive. I have contacted the seller several times, but have not gotten a response with my latest e-mail. I am very frustrated and am considering filing a claim with Amazon regarding this seller.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be better...
This book could do with some revising. The important terms are not bold, but italic. Headings only loosely describe what you are learning. There are no "key terms" type boxes, or review questions at the end except for some touchy-feely discussion questions.

If your professor is using the test bank for the book, be forewarned that you will have to dig for the key concepts in each chapter.

Earth to Katherine Miller, no one in their right mind is going to read your book cover-to-cover because they want to. Any study skills class will enlighten you to how students actually cover textbook material.

5-0 out of 5 stars i guess it's not bad
I am NOT really reviewing the content of this book, so please don't say this review wasn't helpful.

I just want to say that there are international versions of this textbook, which is the same, that can be bought on other websites (a certain auction website). I got mine for about $32 (not a hardcover) with no shipping fee.

But in terms of the content of this book, it has been pretty straight forward and easy to understand so far (I haven't finished my organizational communications course).

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice buy
A good buy from Amazon. The book is in good shape yet has some highlighting inside that I sometimes find annoying.

2-0 out of 5 stars Theory, theory, theory
This book lists theory after theory after theory, with hardly any examples in the text to explain, or at least break up the monotony. If you can avoid getting this book, you will be a happier and more knowledgeable person (since you can probably find something else that explains things better). ... Read more

Communication in Action integrates the language arts—speaking, listening, viewing, reading, and writing—into a total curriculum that centers around children's literature. The text conveys the author's creativity and enthusiasm with ideas for using literature to teach language skills across the curriculum.

A professional development resource, "Access Pages: The Teacher's Planning Resource Handbook," appears in a tabbed section at the end of the text. The handbook helps teachers create lesson plans, select children's books, and evaluate software options. It also provides information on e-mail and the Internet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading...and Not Just For Communications Professionals
Sally Patterson's and Janel Radtke's new edition of their classic "Strategic Communications for Nonprofit Organizations" aims high and again hits the target dead-on.

Patterson's and Radtke's book is clear, compelling, specific, and readable. The organization of the material is comendable, with workbook-type exercises after each major section to assist in using the book to best advantage. And here's the best part: the authors take readers through a Seven Step planning process; but I'll bet that most nonprofits only consider two of the middle steps, if any. Yet the other five are equally crucial to guarantee enduring communications successes that advance the organization's mission.

My only criticism that I hope the authors address in furture editions is the need for more treatment of just-emerging communications beyond the web, email, blogging, etc. For example, the mass phenomenon of text messaging as a tool of social activism. But with the speed at which technology moves, this is understandable and, in any event, not too serious because "Strategic Communication" is associated with a solid companion website.

Certainly if you are a communications professional, but as well a nonprofit board member or senior staff member, don't just read this book, for gosh sakes use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Probably not a good book for newbies
This book is inadequate for people without a decent amount of experience with data communications. The book regularly jumps between from extremely basic to fairly complex information making wild assumptions at the reader's base knowledge. An example of this is evident early on when the book starts by going into detail on what the parts of a wave are and then expecting you to understand Fourier Analysis to the T with very little explanation a few pages later. Charts and diagrams included in the book are referred to pages before and after they actually appear, leading to a lot of flipping back and forth. The charts are also poorly explained and detailed, often leaving out important bits of information that most people with limited knowledge wouldn't be expected to know. The review questions aren't worded well, and often leave you wondering whether or not the author had anyone from outside of his department (or even in his department) actually review his writing.

Sadly, since this is a required reading for my class, there's really nothing I could do to get away from this book. I'd assume that the majority of people looking to purchase this book are in the same position.

Honestly, I could only recommend this to people looking for a refresher on data and computer communications.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not pleased with quality of book
Would not buy from this seller again; despite book being listed in 'GOOD' condition, the spine had a significant tear and was overpriced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor wording and terminology inconsistencies.
This book is written decently if you are using it a professional reference text. As class textbook it is a poor choice for one reason. The terminology used in the chapter questions does not match up with the terminology used in the rest of the text about half the time. Students are left wondering what the questions are really asking and what some the new terms mean. This book makes the topics way more complicated than they need to be, and it is all a result of terminology inconsistencies.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
The book covers most of the important aspects of communication and network. The basics of communication theories including nyquist & shannon . It provides a solid background of network, communication and basics of how things work from network & communicationspoint-view , I loved it

3-0 out of 5 stars Text Book
This seems to be a in depth study... a bit more than I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow Read But Worth the Wait
this book is an excellent source for information on nonverbal communication. it presents some ideas in a way that I have never heard them discussed before. this book is a little difficult to read through if you are not interested in the subject, but the quality of the information is wonderful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great information, uninspiring presentation
I can't argue with the reviewers who point out that Knapp and Hall are two very distinguished scholars who know their stuff.I also can't argue with the fact that this book is very thorough, jam-packed with fascinating information, and one of the most useful guides you can get about the many different aspects of nonverbal human communication. What I will say is that this book is painfully DULL.The authors try to liven things up by adding a humorous story or a joke on occasion, but the feel of the book remains like a textbook in the worst possible sense. It's faceless, lifeless, and hard to finish. It's a crime that such fascinating information has to be delivered in such a dry, tiresome style.Get this book if you're interested in nonverbal, but also keep a cup of coffee handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Researchers
This is a terrific compilation of research into nonverbal communication. It is a thoroughly sourced review of writings on nonverbal topics, tending toward a psychological, academic tone.

Note: If you are seeking original research, Knapp's and Hall's book would be a good reference aid. However, in this work they are content to primarily synthesize the work of others. That said, they do a marvelous job of collecting and reporting on a wealth of valuable insights. ... Read more

It has been very relevant for me to have the historical background of PR in order to understand the fundamentals of my professional practice as well as to become concious of the breath of the PR and communications application to business and government.

5-0 out of 5 stars The nature of change
A fantastic overall look at the history of public relations. This book looks indepth at public relations as well as the more recent developments of issues and cris management.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Tough Read
Evidently, this book does not target people starting out in Public Relations. I am a VP of Marketing in a start-up company looking to get some feel for the value of PR. I found this book utterly unintelligible. I was also irritated by the constant reference to `clarity of communication' - advice that the author clearly ignores. Why is `plain English' considered to be such a crime? After reading this on a 3 hour flight from Denver to New York, I was none the wiser about PR and given the significant weight of the book, decided to leave it on the plane. This is a text for PR academics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesante

4-0 out of 5 stars Path to Leadership
You can't learn leadership from a book, but you can learn the styles including what works and doesn't.Therefore this book covers all the research for the last century or so on leadership. As such it is very good tool to work out why some styles of leadership (yours, your bosses) don't work, and why other do.

This is the text for a Masters university course I am taking, so the book is of a very high academic standard.

The book is very in depth, but also very American centric.

I would suggest reading this book AND other books - such as "The 7 Heavenly Virtues of Leadership".That way you can start to see the concepts and styles of leadership at a broader level to make up your own mind on the style that is most productive for you and your team. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important college-level guide
This new second edition of a classic updates crisis examples and case studies but retains its multi-disciplinary coverage to provide an integrated approach to crisis communication and the entire management process. The author uses three stages - precrisis, crisis, and postcrisis - to example how crisis management can prevent or reduce threats, offering practical guidelines suitable for emergency applications. An important college-level guide for both undergrad and graduate courses in public relations, management, or crisis communications.

As both a student and professional of crisis management and communication, I have read countless articles and books on the topic. After a while, they all start to sound alike, and you can begin to wonder whether there's really anything new and insightful out there.

This book is it.

The author compiles research from a vast number of fields, as well as adding some of his own analysis resulting from a distinguished professional and academic career. The final product is the best "holistic" guide to crisis management I've ever read. 5-0 out of 5 stars Still Has Much to Offer
I bought this book at a psychology conference in 1980 and it has remained a treasure to me ever since.

Yes, it is true Gottman wrote this book way back, but it still has much to offer and I find that it's straightforward style suits both myself and my clients.

Of course his later books have much to offer also. It is just that this is one I find myself seeking out and sharing its content with my clients. And what it covers is STILL very helpful. Old truths have no "use by" stamp on them. And Gottman has always had a lot to offer. I am very grateful to him for his assistance through this book.

But by all means seek out his other books; they are also helpful in their own way and maybe one of them will speak to a particular person better. Certainly, if one believes the most recent of something is automatically the best, that person should choose recently published books for the sheer placebo effect upon him or her. But I think there is are flaws/assumptions in the reasoning behind such a choice - think about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purchased book as a gift
Because I purchased this book as a gift, I cannot attest to its value, except to say that I've heard that this author and his book are very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring your communication back to square one
Although the book is now over 30 years old and some of the examples seem a bit foreign, "A Couple's Guide to Communication" helps partners take the emotional charge out of arguments and get to the heart of the issue. I am extremely impressed by techniques that help to check the intent of your message against the impact it makes on your partner, leveling and editing conversations, verification of each others feelings... and more! We now recognize that a single word used in an argument can change the entire message, how to remove the emotional charge when conversing, how to make our point without offending each other and how to succeed in validating and respecting your partners persons position without necessarily having to agree. This book puts daily bickering in perspective and gets to the heart of why the bickering occurs with activities and discussion directives to guide conversations that you and your partner would have had anyway, but are now productive and not destructive. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to feel closer to your partner through real transcendental conversation - and may provide new fulfillment in your physical relationship as a result!

1-0 out of 5 stars A Couple's Guide to Communication
This book was published in 1976.There are more current books by the same author that are much better. He is a researcher who was just "starting out" in 1976 and has since made new discoveries so that this book (examples for sure) are very out-of-date for today's world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book helped me understand that we often do more damage to our relationships even when we intend to make things better. After reading this book, I see that there are so many things that I noticed in myself and my partner that negatively affected our relationship. We are now on the path to correct these things and our relationship is getting better month by month. This book as well as a very enlightening book called "The Ever-transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato are Godsends to us. They have saved our marriage and made us more positive and hopeful about our own lives! If you read these books, you will understand what I am saying. Good luck on your journeys together! ...
