Product Description
This book discusses the history and contemporary practice of studying cultures 'at home', by examining Europe's regional or 'small' ethnologies of the past, present and future. With the rise of nationalism and independence in Europe, ethnologies have often played a major role in the nation-building process. The contributors to this book offer case studies of ethnologies as methodologies, showing how they can address key questions concerning everyday life in Europe. They also explore issues of European integration and the transnational dimension of culture in Europe today, and examine how regional ethnologies can play a crucial part in forming a wider 'European ethnology' as local participants have experience of combining identities within larger regions or nations. ... Product Description
Volume 10 of the "Compendium of Scottish Ethnology" brings together a series of essays by a diverse range of authors on the themes of oral literature and performance culture. The topics covered in this volume include: narrative collection and performance; music (traditional, folk & classical); Gaelic song and verse; ballads; bothy ballads; chapbooks; child lore; dance; and, theatre and drama. The cultural motifs that have over the years been gathered together to constitute the National Song Book and National Drama are identified and discussed. In so doing, the role of 'tradition' in these key aspects of the cultural life of the Scots is thrown into relief. It emerges that tradition and identity are cultural traits which are capable of bearing many meanings. The characterisation of 'tradition' as the immutable source, unadulterated by human invention is challenged in this volume, and in its place is a recognition of the dynamic nature of many of those cultural forms which are described as 'traditional'. This volume acts an ethnographic source in its own terms - drawing together details and insights regarding phenomena such as the Folk Revival of the 1950s and the collection and collectors of 'folk' stories and songs. The impressive range of this volume demonstrates the many ways in which Scots have communicated and continue to communicate with each other regarding the local and national and the communal and the intimate concerns of yesterday, today and tomorrow. ... Product Description
Marcel Mauss (1872-1950) was the leading social anthropologist in Paris between the world wars, and his Manuel d ethnographie, dating from that period, is the longest of all his texts. Despite having had four editions in France, the Manuel has hitherto been unavailable in English. This contrasts with his essays, longer and shorter, many of which have long enjoyed the status of classics within anthropology. We are therefore pleased to present, in the English language for the first time, this extraordinary work that is based on the more than thirty lectures Mauss delivered each year under the title Instructions in descriptive ethnography, intended for travelers, administrators and missionaries. Despite his dates, Mauss s treatment of fundamental questions, such as how to conceptualize and classify the range of social phenomena known to us from history and ethnography, has lost none of its freshness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adds depth to the artist's career
Fans of Ukiyo-e already love the vivid colors, gentle gradations, and non-Western tradition of Japanese woodcut prints. If you've fallen in love with these images, maybe you want to take your relationship to a deeper level. Forrer presents one way to deepen your appreciation of the art.

Kuniyoshi's career, from about 1814 to his death in 1861, created a huge volume work, from minor humorous pieces, to simpler works with amusing images, to exciting shunga. Only a half-dozen finished prints appear here. Instead, this presents sketches that Kunyoshi used to work out his ideas before committing them to the rigors of woodcut. Some sketches capture isolated figures or poses, others display a visual concept close to its final printable form, and yet others lie at every point on the continuum between fragmentary concept and finished work. Some of the more interesting show different states of a single idea, as in the early sketch of plate 27 and the finished print of plate 28, shown opposite 27 in the black and white section, and again among the color plates. Other examples (e.g., plates 109 and 110) show a much looser connection of concept and completion, at least as interesting to students of the creative process.

I had hoped to see sketches of Kunyoshi's shunga (erotic images) represented, but their omission is my only disappointment in this book. Perhaps no shunga sketches remain, something that seems unlikely given how productive Kuniyoshi was in the genre and how many sketches of his other work survive. Perhaps the extant sketches are closely held by collectors and unavailable to scholars, perhaps issues of delicacy forbade their inclusion. Whatever the reason, it's a mark against this collection, but only a small one.

This won't do much for the eye captivated by the color and finished elegance of Japanese woodcuts, and makes no attempt to represent any artist but Kuniyoshi. For some of us, though, the focus on one artist and the hundred-plus samples of thought process comprise an incredible resource for study and enjoyment.

Product Description
In the late nineteenth century, Germans spearheaded a worldwide effort to preserve the material traces of humanity, designing major ethnographic museums and building extensive networks of communication and exchange across the globe. In this groundbreaking study, Glenn Penny explores the appeal of ethnology in Imperial Germany and analyzes the motivations of the scientists who created the ethnographic museums.

Penny shows that German ethnologists were not driven by imperialist desires or an interest in legitimating putative biological or racial hierarchies. Overwhelmingly antiracist, they aspired to generate theories about the essential nature of human beings through their museums' collections. They gained support in their efforts from boosters who were enticed by participating in this international science and who used it to promote the cosmopolitan character of their cities and themselves. But these cosmopolitan ideals were eventually overshadowed by the scientists' more modern, professional, and materialist concerns, which dramatically altered the science and its goals.

By clarifying German ethnologists' aspirations and focusing on the market and conflicting interest groups, Penny makes important contributions to German history, the history of science, and museum studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History of the Development of German Ethnographic Museums
This book, based on the author's doctoral thesis, is an excellent exploration of the development of ethnographic museums in Germany. These museums originally evolved from scattered ethnographic collections. They were developed and funded as a result ofcompetition between different municipal governments. Originally the stated purpose of such institutions was to understand man kind by collecting exhaustive examples of material culture from "disappearing" societies with a view to understanding them through evaluating these materials.Later there was more of a focus on the public nature of museums and how certain types of displays could make human variation more accessible to the public. One major change was from typological arrangements to geographically oriented arrangements.Display caseswent from being packed with examples of spears from a variety of cultures to thoughtful arrangements of objects from a single culture. He discusses problems such as lack of space, need for more labels and the focus on accumulating more and more objects at the expense of cataloging or evaluating them. He gives numerous interesting examples of political strife and also how collecting was carried out in the field in the colonial context including a descriptions of some less than ethical collectors. Overall, for someone who is interested in this topic, this is an excellent book which held my interest throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthropology applied to American Railroading
This is as far as I know, the ONLY serious study concerning what railroad work entails and how railroaders become enculturated into their crafts. It is written specifically from the perspective of the Locomotive Engineer (Engine Driver, for those of you living outside the USA).Author Frederick Gamst writes in his preface that he conducted his research between 1955 and 1961, during 6 1/2 years employment in engine service, as well as fieldwork between 1970 and 1975.

Gamst refers to the individuals, unions, and companies by fictitions names in this book to protect privacy, also undoubtedly not to discourage participation in the future. The railroad he worked for and later further researched is fictitiously called the "Central City and Urbana Railroad".According to other works by Gamst I have read, it appears to have been the Western Division of the Southern Pacific.

For those with no experience whatsoever in Anthropology or Sociology, don't despair!Dr. Gamst explains the importance and meaning of industrial ethnology as well as he explains railroad terms, customs, and behaviors.Chapters include:

1. Introduction (Scope of the Book, In the Rail World, Industrial Ethnology)

2. The Railroad and its Setting (Development of the railroads and the United States, Railroads in Contemporary American Society, The Geographical Setting of the CC & U)

3. Hiring Out (Enculturating the Railroader, Becoming a Student, Examining the Diesel-Electric, Learning the Craft, Flattening Wheels, Learning, A Retrospection)

4. Operating and Other Rules (The Book of Rules, Scope of Rules, Local Additions to Rules, Rules as Ideal and Actual Patterns, Examinations on Rules, Rules, a Retrospection

5. Freight Train, Freight Train, Goes So Slow (The call is out, Bean time conversation, In the register room, Leaving Town, The Man in Charge, The Delayer)

6. On the High Iron (Running to Cementon, Picking up Cars, Radioing Ahead, Hotboxes, "It was on this grade...", Down the Hill, Setting Out)

7. The Home Terminal (Heading home, Arriving at Urbana Terminal, Mileage, other good, and protection of good, Off The Job)

8. Future Trends for the Hoghead (Railroad growth in a developed country, rail demographics, The hoghead is a Lady, Energeticlimits to Growth, Technological Development, Diversification, Nationalization, and Regulation)

*References & Glossary

While 25 years down the line, a few of the things Gamst discusses are outdated, as a Railroad Conductor who has worked in both freight and passenger service, many more things discussed here are still relevent. There is still pride in our craft, and we still hire out, get quits, go to beans, spot cars, pull cars, make set-outs and pick-ups...

On a personal level, this volume (and several of his other published works) was an inspiration and help to me during my senior year in College when I did a study on railroad occupational subculture, and needed ideas for structuring my project and conducting interviews with railroad employees.Gamst has in essence provided a template for further research on our subculture, offering a well thought out and planned work which clarifies what makes a Rail, a Rail.
