Product Description
A comprehensive and user-friendly guide to school law with a wholly unique question-and-answer format.

Written in a user-friendly question-and-answer format that engages and encourages readers, the new eighth edition of Teachers and the Law offers future educators a thorough and wide-ranging understanding of United States public school law. Eliminating technical and intimidating legal speak in favor of clear and simple explanations, this comprehensive school law text provides school professions with the knowledge and tools they need to both understand legal issues as they arise and to practice preventive law regardless of their legal background. Blending the use of straightforward and easy-to-understand prose with real-life examples and case studies, Teachers and the Law is a vital reference for those who are likely to face pressing school law questions in their coming careers as educators.

The newest edition of this text highlights current trends and decisions in the most recent areas of school law. New topics include teachers’ controversial postings on the internet, the Teacher Liability Protection Act, peer sexual harassment, disciplining students for cyber-bullying, recent restrictions on teachers’ academic freedom and personal life, protections for gay and lesbian students, and for students’ freedom of religious and political expression.  The eighth edition also explains changes in affirmative action decisions, special education, and the likely changes in the No Child Left Behind law.  In addition, the most current edition divides the topic of freedom of expression into two chapters to give readers an expanded understanding of this increasingly controversial topic for both teachers and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book in Great condition
Book came fast and is in excellent condition for a used book.Also, the price was right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super informative and easy to read
Teachers and the Law (7th ed) is divided into chapters and sections, and is written in a question/answer format.Different cases are also introduced, discussed and their significance in education is explored.All kinds of issues are discussed, from what constitutes libel to marriage between administrators and teachers within the same school.The vocabulary/terminalogy is not difficult....you do not need a legal dictionary, nor any dictionary for that matter.It is very interesting, not mundane, and easy to read.One of the few books that I didn't dread having to read for my courses. This is an excellent book to have in your educator's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but guidance was helpful
Teachers and the Law (6th Edition) was the primary text used for my National-Louis University (Wheeling, IL) School Law course. Although the text implies that only information regarding teachers will be discussed, Fischer actually covers legal issues that deal with many levels of educational law including student cases, administrator cases, and even cases that don't involve teachers at all, but loosely relate to educational law in general.

This was my first exposure to any formally-presented school law information and I must confess that I was quite overwhelmed at first. Fischer tends to present a major case very clearly and then fully explains its implications and outcomes. However, he then presents several other related cases that often have conflicting or opposing outcomes to the original point.

What I learned from this text is that there is very little "black and white" when it comes to interpreting school law. I was interested to learn that even the landmark decision cases are still constantly debated in the courts and sometimes ignored when decisions are made by judges or juries. It took our experienced professor to help us understand the subtext of some of the cases and discern the probable reasons why some cases were decided in seemingly arbitrary ways.

In general, Teachers and the Law greatly increased my understanding of school law, but without an experienced professor, I would not have gleaned as much practical information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teachers and the Law
I received the book in good shape.The cover looked next to new and there were very little marks or highlights in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Teachers
Case law, unless done perhaps by the likes of John Grissam, is not page turning material.However, the authors have done an incredible job of putting very pressing and often complex areas into an accessible and engaging book.Written in an easy to use question and answer format, the updated book touches on education legal issues ranging from free speech, to students with disabilities, to internet issues.While of great use for educator (or educators to be), the book could also easily be adapted for classroom use, either as a debate or research starter.Worth every penny of its price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How I learned Crim. Law
I pretty much attribute this book to my success in Crim. Law.You can pretty much just use this book to build an outline around.The whole series, but this one is especially clear and helpful.I used it for the last couple weeks before my exam to help study, but I am sure that it is equally beneficial as a resource over the course of the class.

2-0 out of 5 stars Criticisms of the fourth edition apply here too.
I had high hopes that the fifth edition would not have the problems described in the reviews of the fourth edition. Alas.

The other E&E books I have read have been helpful, informative, and entertaining, but this one is confusing, massively boring, and leaves more questions than it answers.

The critical reviews of the fourth edition do a good job of explaining what is unfortunately wrong with this book. Read them and proceed with caution. ... Read more

Product Description
Constitutional Law: National Power and Federalism, which is part of a two-volume set, is a problem-oriented guide to the principle doctrines of constitutional law that are covered in the typical course. This straightforward text walks the student through issues pertaining to the structure of our constitutional system, including judicial review, justiciability, national power, supremacy, the separation of powers and federalism, as well as some of the structural limitations that the Constitution imposes on state powers.

Designed to encourage students to think about the larger issues of constitutional law with both depth and perception, this straightforward and informal text:
- Utilizes the unique, time-tested E and E pedagogy that combines textual material with well-written and comprehensive examples, explanations, and questions to test students' comprehension of the materials and provide practice in applying legal principles to fact patterns. The questions (in which there are often a variety of issues presented in one fact situation) are similar to those on a law school or bar examination;
- Is organized to parallel the major casebooks and will complement any constitutional law casebook;
- Explains legal concepts and principles in digestible sections, followed by examples and analyses that illustrate how to apply these concepts and principles in hypothetical situations;
- Is part of a two-volume set that includes a corresponding treatment of Individual Rights. Together, these two volumes compose a strong and sophisticated foundation in the doctrines and methods of constitutional law and constitutional argument.

With thoroughly updated text and examples and explanations, the Fifth Edition also incorporates important Supreme Court cases decided during the three terms since the publication of the previous edition, including:
- Hawaii v. Office of Hawaiian Affairs, on adequate and independent state ground of decision;
- District of Columbia v. Heller, on original understanding;
- Horn v. Flores; Massachusetts v. EPA; and Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No.1;
- Hein v. Freedom from Religion Foundation, Inc. and Lance v. Coffman, on citizen and taxpayer standing;
- FEC v. Wisconsin Right to Life, Inc. on mootness;
- Van de Kamp v. Goldstein; Pearson v. Callahan; and Safford Unified School District #1 v. Redding, on government officials' immunity from damages;
- Ashcroft v. Iqbal, on claims;
- Medellin v. Texas, on self-executing treaties and presidential power;

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for those in financial need.
It has been said that if we "seek ye first the kingdom of heaven all else with be added unto us".The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity show us how to achieve a mindset and lifestyle that puts God first and foremost. "The ancients intuitively knew that giving, sharing, and putting God first financially was the first step to permanent, enduring prosperity".This book is not some get rich quick scheme or airy fairy-hocus pocus technique. It is a way for the reader to implement into our lives and affairs day to day practical applications though the use of affirmations, tithing and prayer work promoted by the spirit of giving, sharing, kindness and love. We must remember the old saying, "Faith without work is dead".This book helps us to understand the true meaning behind that statement. It teaches us to practice what we preach in a way that brings a change to our lives that we never before thought possible. It is a book that helps us to focus our thoughts on happiness but also to act and react in a joyful manner without any thought of self gratification.If you are in need of monetary substance, this is a great book for the person that is willing to take the time to learn and grow in order to implement a change that will last you the rest of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly True
There's something instantaneous that happens when I read this book.Everything in my life improves.I've read it repeatedly, because of that.This is a great book to share with our friends and loved one's, especially in this horrible economy that we're in.Give them the lift they need and a prayer that they'll read it and allow the power of the universe to work for them in a positive way.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPIRITUAL CLASSIC! I PLAN TO READ ALL THE BOOKS BY PONDER!
you need to read this book, its so easy to understand and yet so detailed and comprehensive. Cathrine Ponder has profound and comprehensive insight into how the universal laws of the mind work to bring positive manifestations of prosperity and abundance into our lives. this particular book is similar to many New Thought and positive thinking books you will read. BUT Cathrine Ponder is the ONLY author who talks about the GOD of the bible in her books even has a chapter on prayer with a section on praying to Jesus. I looked for other books written by this author and discovered that her books go deep into the bible to discover New Thought and positive thinking principals found in old testament books and stories as well as a book on Jesus. I'm really excited to read her other books, since her series has such a focus on the bible. It seems to me that her philosophy is that the bible of Christianity is a positive thinking prosperity book and i want to learn how to interpret and read the bible as she does! I believe that I will enjoy reading all her books, I always re-read The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity!

4-0 out of 5 stars Liviing the dream

Product Description
Received an Honorable Mention in the Communication and Cultural Studies category of the 2005 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Annual Awards Competition presented by the Association of American Publishers, Inc.

Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more.

Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on.

Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products—how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Homeopathic to the extreme
Do you know what homeopathy is? You dissolve sth in a glass of water, then add another glass of water, then 2 glasses of water, then 4, then 8, ... and after some number of repetitions you got nothing of what you put in there in the first place, just water. By the way, if it was a drug it should still work ... well, not quite.

The same story is with this book. There's no essence really there, just high-level general statements. And just like with homeopathy it will not work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick and light, worth a read.
Definitely worth a read.Maeda's list of suggested books at the end is also very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars It changes your daily life in a way
Still in the middle of this book, and although Maeda's line of organizing his ideas throughout the book is not the GREATEST one, lessons themselves are easy and inspiring to understand and get some parts of your daily life somehow different... especially when you deal with such a huge mass of information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply don't read it
-The title is grand and but the content verges on filler anecdotes
-Maeda writes prosaically, meandering through numbered chapters.
-Where does Madea work?MIT, MIT, MIT, MIT.We get it.
-The acronyms are incredibly hard to remember.
-Why are there 10 rules instead of 11 or 3?

+ Thankfully, the book is short.
+ Tufte's "Envisioning Information" is the book you should read, if you haven't already, dealing with *this* subject thoughtfully and usefully.

-It feels like Maeda wanted to sink his design fangs into simplicity but while writing decided to save his teeth.

2-0 out of 5 stars "If you can't describe it simply, you can't use it simply."
I watched a show about design on Ovation TV and it featured this book. At first glance, the book seems engaging and interesting. As I read on I felt like I was in a work sales meeting with acronyms a plenty. Don't get me wrong this book had a lot of interesting points but it was more work to read trying to remember all of the authors many acronyms. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have ever read about my career
Best book I have ever read about my career, wish I would have read it years ago.I have recommended this book to all my co-workers and they agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saving Book
I wish I had read Dr. Gilmatin's book earlier in my career as a National Park Ranger.I felt that this book was written about me and what my family and I were experiencing due to my job.I was privileged to hear Dr. Gilmartin speak at a training course and immediately bought his book to better study his information and implement his recommendations for dealing with the emotional stress and ups and downs of law enforcement.I was so moved by the benefits of this book that as a supervisor with a dwindling budget, I still made it a priority to buy a copy of for each of the park rangers under by responsibility.I also encouraged them all to have their spouses or significant others read the book.Several thanked me and Dr. Gilmartin for his astute insight into our world.

Everyone working in or considering a job in law enforcement should read this book.It made an impact on my life and helped me to work more affectively and healthily to the end of my career.

The book arrived very quickly and without damage. I read the book over the space of week and have found it invaluable. I have since lent the book to other people at work and they have inturn raved about the contents and the ease of reading of this book. My only wish is that I read this book five years ago when I first started as a Police Officer. 5-0 out of 5 stars 100% Accurate

Product Description
Law School Confidential is written for students about to embark on this three-year odyssey by students who have successfully survived. It demystifies the life-altering thrill ride that defines an American legal education by providing a comprehensive, blow-by-blow, chronological account of what to expect. It arms students with a thorough overview of the contemporary law school experience. This isn't the advice of graying professors or battle-scarred practitioners decades removed from law school. Miller has assembled a panel of recent graduates to act as "mentors", all of whom are perfectly positioned to shed light on what law school is like today. From taking the LSAT, to securing financial aid, to navigating the notorious first semester, to taking exams, to applying for summer internships, to getting on the law review, to tackling the bar and beyond...this book explains it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars law school book 2
very well done. Nicely laid out. Lots of good information. I think it is copyright last 5 of 6 years. Fairly up to do date. Good insite and some great hints on the first year... do's and don'ts ... I like that part....

If you do buy it, buy it used... i would not have paid full price.. However this was very informative for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY KINDLE VERSION!
The book itself seems perfectly ok. The 1 star is specifically for the Kindle version. It has a huge amount of OCR errors (that are also present in the apple ibook version, so it's a publisher issue). It makes the book almost unreadable in many places. There are some charts and forms that are messed up as well, but I expect that in a kindle version. Fix the errors and I would give it at least 3 stars. I have notified Amazon. For now stick with the paper copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Kindle Typo'sruined my experience.
This is a good book, but reading it on Kindle was far from enjoyable.It begins in the book's forward, the word "die" appears where the word "the" should be. I thought, that is okay, easy enough to deal with. However, as you get deeper into the book, the typo's become more cryptic and more frequent.I love my Kindle, but you are better off reading this in hardcopy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
I've only read the first few chapters because they're the only ones that apply to me so far. So far the advice is sound, there seems to be a lot of input from various people who have graduated from some of the top schools in the country. The writing is compelling and speaks directly to the reader in an informal manner. Probably a good guide to help someone wrap their head around the entire experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid overview of material
This book proved to be a critical supplement to my poor immigration law course.The book provides a very helpful overview of the entirety of immigration law in the U.S., and really helps clarify the complex categories and definitions that pervade the subject.Depending on how theoretical or policy-oriented your course is, you might actually learn more about the black letter law from this book than from the course, as I did.Overall, given the low price I would recommend purchasing it even if you only think it would be marginally helpful to your studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars (4th ed.) Good overview/foundation for further research
The most difficult thing about studying any body of laws resides, not in its substance, but in its presentation. One advantage of immigration law is that it relies heavily on fairly stable categories. This book should help anyone but the most impatient to build a first outline of the main categories of immigration law--with helpful annotations.

15 chapters: 1-4 (background information--including history and constitutional law); 5 (immigrant visas), 6 (nonimmigrant visas), 7 (zooms on student visas--a sub-category of nonimmigrant visas), 8 (removal--formerly "deportation"), 9 (inadmissibility), 10 (refugees/asyless), 11 (international law), 12 (citizenship), 13 (zooms on rights of aliens in general), 14 (criminal aspects of immigration law), 15 (ethical practice).

My main advice is to take good note of the general INA and CFR provisions under each category and subcategory, and names (and holdings, why not) of important cases. Add that to your outline, and you have a fine guide for further research. In other words, if your goal is to familiarize yourself with the field AS A WHOLE for the first time, don't get bogged down in the discussions of legal history and cases at first (yes, this is not a manual, so what's the point?)--except for the general history of US immigration law at the start of the book, which gives you a good first sense of the "spirit" of US immigration policy. You could come back to those discussions later, without the aggravation.

I do not recommend delving directly into any body of laws that is as extensive as immigration law, unless of course you have a few years to spare--but then again why waste that time? Think of books like this one as you would of maps: you don't want to have to start looking for California, street by street, starting in Washington DC. The point is this: an overview is always useful. This one should help you, if you use it properly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best ready reference on Immigration
This book is not only very easy to carry around but is an awesome tool for students and practitioners. Right to the point and easy reading format, a must to deal with the most complicated area of our laws. It seems that it will be a good tool for a while since there's no change to immigration laws on sight in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT NUTSHELL
I would HIGHLY encourage anyone taking Immigration law to purchase this nutshell.It succintly covered all the topics of immigration law and trendously helped in understanding this evolving field of law.

Product Description
Constitutional Law: Individual Rights, one work from a two-volume set, is a problem-oriented guide to the principle doctrines of constitutional law as covered in the typical course. This straightforward text walks the student through the constitutional provisions that protect individual rights: Takings and Contracts clauses, Due Process, Freedoms of Speech and Religion, and Equal Protection.

Designed to encourage students to think about the larger issues of constitutional law with depth and perception, this clear and informal text:
- Utilizes the unique, time-tested E and E pedagogy that combines textual material with well-written and comprehensive examples, explanations, and questions to test students' comprehension of the materials and provide practice in applying legal principles to fact patterns. The questions (in which there are often a variety of issues presented in one fact situation) are similar to those on a law school or bar examination;
- Parallels the major casebooks in its organization and will complement any constitutional law casebook;
- Explains legal concepts and principles in digestible sections, followed by examples and analyses that illustrate how to apply these concepts and principles in hypothetical situations.

With thoroughly updated text and examples and explanations, the Fifth Edition also incorporates important Supreme Court cases, including:
- District of Columbia v. Heller, on the right to bear arms;
- Gonzales v. Carhart, on regulation of abortion;
- Kennedy v. Louisiana, on the death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment;
- Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, on benign race discrimination;
- Exxon Shipping v. Baker, on due process limits on punitive damages;
and many others. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
This book is a great tool for anyone working in the schools. Includes case studies, discussion/reflection questions, and laws to live by. There are many times when as an educator I question whether something is being done right, and this book tells me everything I need to know. I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nearly New?!?!
This textbook was a required text for a grad. class.I understand that a textbook should be "nearly new" after being used by an owner, however, this textbook's spine was spliting in half and every chapter was heavily highlighted.I would have thought I would have paid half the price, but not quite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and informative
This text is easy to read and informative. Sample cases provide insight into current law.Practical for both public and private school teachers and administrators.

4-0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this book
This book is actually an easy read and it gets to the point.The only downfall I see is that there are not term definitions for most of the legal terms.I found many of the cases up to date and relevant to any school setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moves the story right along...
#2 First Law fantasy trilogy. This second book furthers the stories of the motley mix of characters introduced in book one, some of whom think others among them are dead. Scattered to the corners of the globe, traveling in groups on very different missions, our friends experience the travails of war--both open war and impending war. Bayaz (the First of the Magi) travels with Loren Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar and others in search of an ancient magical relic on the other side of the world. Threetrees, Black Dow, Dogman and their crew join Colonel West, who is trying to protect Crown Prince Ladisla and his entourage, who are off to war and totally ill-equipped for it,having led lives at court as spoiled royalty and never been in battle. Sand dan Glokta and his Practicals are off to Durgosta where he is to become Superior Inquisitor of the city and investigate what happened to his predecessor, who seems to have vanished off the face of the earth.

A very interesting, widely differing group of characters in a stark, unforgiving, war-torn world. Not your usual unicorns and faeries type fantasy, I would call this series more of a dark fantasy, and definitely not for the prim, proper or faint of heart. I really enjoy this series and look forward to the third one, which should tie all these threads together nicely. There was a little bit of the 'middle book' curse to it, in that the book couldn't really end and have a story that was self-inclusive, but it did do a wonderful job of progressing the various storylines along.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This, the second book in the trilogy, is an excellent continuation of the story. The characters keep developing into this book. A great read, I steamed right through it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Dead Yet
Iconoclasm is fun at first, but it's got a shelf life shorter than a Japanese pop band. Once the glitter rubs off, what once seemed glam feels about as hip as Jefferson Airplane.

"Before They are Hanged" doesn't fall quite so far, but the biting satire is beginning to dull. I confess, I had a whale of a time with Joe Abercrombie's first book in the series, "The Blade Itself". Here, Mr Abercrombie cheerfully vivisected some of the ropiest fantasy clichés, from savage barbarians to kindly old wizards. Logen Ninefingers, the barbarian, spent more time screaming in pain than anger. The old wizard proved as kindly as Vlad the Impaler, and the nicest bloke in the whole book turned out to the torturer.

Mr Abercrombie returns to the bonfire of the inanities in the second book, this time stoking the flames with the concept of heroic journeys and quests, heroes who get through battles without a crease in their woolens, traitors and sieges, heroic romance and famous last words. Nothing is sacred. Again.

The action quickly picks up where "The Blade Itself" left off, with the ramshackle kingdom called the Union facing threats on multiple fronts. The armies of the prophet Khalul, led by a coterie of invincible, cannibalistic Eaters are bearing down on the Union city of Dagoska from the south, while those of the barbarian King Bethod threaten the province of Angland to the north.

Inquisitor Glokta arrives in Dagoska to shore up the defenses and unravel the mysterious disappearance of his predecessor. Bayaz, the First of the Magi and former brother-in-arms to Khalul, journeys in search of a weapon that can stop Khalul's unnatural underlings. He is joined by a mismatched band of five would-be heroes: Logen, Bayaz's apprentice, a talkative guide, a dashing swordsman and a feral escaped slave. A third story arc follows another band of misfits with colorful names like Dogman, as they accompany a Union army heading north, under the dubious leadership of the Union's vain and cretinous Crown Prince.

We've already been introduced to this identity parade of characters, which leaves Mr Abercrombie more time to expand and enrich his world. We get a little further under the unwashed, flea-bitten skin of Logen and Dogman in particular, and these fatalistic, straightforward yet blackly humorous heroes are easily Mr Abercrombie's best inventions. The backstory to the adventure also contains intriguing hints that all this has gone before--hints that Mr Abercrombie has something to say other than "high fantasy sucks!"

All the same, there's still plenty of fun to be had in "Before They are Hanged", watching a string of stale genre staples receive a well-deserved comeuppance. Sword fights become interesting again once you realize Mr Abercrombie is unlikely to let his heroes escape unscathed. Their mask of invulnerability gets its face quite messily mashed in, knocking one hero out but waking the reader up to the possibilities inherent in a story that doesn't handle its characters with kid gloves. The sex is almost as messy as the fighting, uncomfortably believable, mildly embarrassing and--because hey, it's not you--sniggeringly funny.

However, all this relentless stereotype-bashing is starting to wear a little thin. There's now something almost predictable about the character's inability to dig themselves into anything except more trouble. Some of the catch lines too, such as "Say one thing for Logen Ninefingers, say...", have outstayed their welcome. Some of Mr Abercrombie's deconstructions have themselves become stereotypes--the hapless Crown Prince being a classic example. If Mr Abercrombie really wanted to surprise, he'd have the foppish Prince suddenly turn out to be a military genius. Surprise--nepotism works!

It's always easier to destroy than make something new, and I hope that before the end Mr Abercrombie builds something on the smoking rubble of fantasy conventions he's created. In any event, after two books in the series I wonder if he's run out of targets to obliterate. I kind of hope so, otherwise he might be heading back to the remainder bin with all the other glitter boys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of action and battles, with a magical journey too.
Before They Are Hanged picks up right where The Blade Itself left off.Bayaz - the First Mage, Quai his apprentice, the Navigator, Logen or Bloody Nine as he's known, Ferro, and Jezel are all on their journey to the edge of the world to get the seed to save everyone.Glokta and his practicals are in the Southern city Dagoskan, to save a doomed city from the Gurkish.Colonel West is up North fighting with, or for, the Prince against the savage Northmen.It all sounds simple where the characters are and what they are doing.But, the journey with these characters always seems to go by quickly for me with the wonderous things, good and bad, that happen.

I enjoyed The Blade Itself, but I think I enjoyed Before They Are Hanged even more.Joe Abercrombie has a wonderful way of telling the story full of action and wonder.I enjoyed reading of all the happenings with these characters in the different ends of the world, to see there is a great deal going on around the world and needing help in fixing.

I don't know which set of characters I enjoy reading about more.They are all have different happenings and characteristics that pull me into their stories.Glokta is always a pleasure to read with his suspicious negative thoughts are always interesting in how he comes to his conclusions of people and happenings.And he is usually right in his suspicions.Bayaz and the crew have the magic with them and the great journey.Magic and wonder always interest me.Colonel West has the Northern Men coming to him and the crazy chaos.

The characters have all gone through great hardships of their own kind.They are all grew greatly by the end of this book.The Blade Itself defined who they where at the start, and now they are changing.I got to learn more about the Eaters in the south and Shanka (or Flatheads) in the north.Also, some history leading up to the reason Khaluh is doing what he is doing.

You start to see the inside workings of the history to why they are where they are and the world as it is.I love how the history ties everyone together.Even why Bayaz picked the crew, and yet wonder the purpose of a few of them.

There was one thing I would have liked to have, a map.BUT I really liked how Joe Abercrombie drew a map of the world with his worlds and I didn't need a physical map to help visualize the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow but solid
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend, who was dead-on when he said "the first book starts out kind of slow, but books 2 and 3 are amazing".If you like a lot of action and war sequences, you don't get to much of that until books 2 and 3.Book 1 is primarily character development.The easiest comparison is to imagine the first lord of the rings book ending right before the fellowship sets off from Rivendale.The book does carry a bit of action, as you are introduced to some of the major characters, but the action is simply a backdrop to get to know some of the characters.

I found book 1 a bit of a slow read, but I could not put books 2 or 3 down once I started. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A superlative ending
I thought the ending was excellent, but I can understand that some people felt cheated. I didn't. I love the fact that everything comes back full-circle and that, should the city live on, would once again recreate itself in a similar manner because human beings tend to repeat the past. Ultimately, it doesn't matter who becomes what because they all find themselves doing the same things their predecessors did. And there is always someone who will be in control--a formidable god figure. Nine fingers ends up in the water from whence he came. Glokta becomes the superior and like the one before him, is as corrupt although smarter and more dangerous. But he too, will fall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written but a bit too cynical for me
I liked how Abercrombie developed interesting characters (sympathetic antagonists and flawed protagonists).He told his story well and included clever lines that gave me some occasional chuckles.However, I found the ending too cynical; his point seemed to be that no matter what people do, they can't really change things.I'm not saying everything should end happily ever after for everyone, but the whole thing just seemed over the top.

2-0 out of 5 stars Life is short, read something else.
I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. I'd go so far to as to say that it is not worth reading.Life's short, so why waste your time with this one?

One reviewer wrote, "this series is a work of literary art." I disagree. Abercrombie is a good writer, but he isn't writing literature. The series feels like a long-form writing assignment on trying to make unlikable characters likable enough to sustain a story. And that's the problem--in the end, the characters not to likeable. Who cares about what happens to Logen, Glokta, Bayaz, or Jezal?

I cared some about the characters in the two previous books, but in the third book I just quit caring. After I quit caring about the characters, their travails do not matter and there was nothing to carrying the plot along.

Abercrombie has accomplished an impressive writing feat by crafting a trilogy based on unsympathetic main characters. But in the end, and especially in the third book, it does not result in interesting or engaging reading. The first book was worth reading and maybe the second, but there's no reason to read this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say one thing for Mr. Abercombie, say he hates happy endings
Coming into this book after reading the first two, I knew this would be another thrilling dark fantasy, gritty and complex characters, and a whole lot of action.I blasted through the first half of this book, enjoying the ride just as much as I had in the first two installments.Abercombie writes some great stuff here, on top of his original take of overused fantasy characters he has a unique way of presenting each scene.This is what makes the book readable.

But then a realization started to sink in as I trudged my way through the second half of the book.The ending was not going to be a nice little package that I have become familiar with, even in other dark fantasies such as American Gods by Neil Gaiman.This story was to be, and I guess I should warn possible SPOILERS ahead, just an abrupt unsatisfying end.Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily hate endings where the "bad guy wins", but I had this distinct feeling that I was no further from the spot where I had started reading the book.All the struggle, and desperation, and after pages and pages of blood, torture, cleaving heads, and sucking gums, I had come to nothing.I suppose this is the writers intention, but just...come on!I was left flipping the back pages, scanning the back, and scratching my head thinking is that it?You invest a long time in each of these characters, and it is decidingly depressing to just have all hopes of redemption snatched out from under their feet.I want to say that all the enjoyment I got from reading the subplot of the book was enough for me, but I can't shake the sour taste in my mouth after an ending like this one. I guess the best I can describe this feeling is like the journey Bayaz, Logen, Ferro, Jezal, etc, made to the End of the World.A long, sometimes enjoyable, sometimes tough, journey, and then you come to the end,only to find that what you had traveled for wasn't there at all.
Now you tell me, is that time worth it or wasted? I still can't seem to decide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Escapism
Most people read epic fantasy for some sort of escapism.While there might be tradgedy, death and hardships along the way typically there are epic heroes who win out in the end.This is I guess what I like.Last argument of kings is not this kind of book.

I guess this is what I was expecting.Instead in this series you have a group of "heroes" who are all very hard to get behind.Just when you think a character is going to do the right thing, or is on the right track they do something horrible, weak, or that completely shows their character has reverted to the way they always were.

I found this interesting, and somewhere in the second book (when the characters seemed to be improving as decent people) I decided I would reccomend this series to a freind.I am now a bit ashamed that I did because when I reccommend a book I feel like people respect my opinion and I just can't get behind this kind of writing.Particually the ending.

The ending was particularly dissapointing.Evil (in many senses) triumphs, love fails, the characters all turn out dissapointing.I have to say I would reccommend this up to the second book, but the third fails. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific in Some Ways
This book goes right onto my Team Lit Top 10 list, because it's a breeze to read, with colorful vignettes and buckets of common sense wisdom. Best of all is its simple organization into 17 "laws" that make the broad ideas easy to grasp, while allowing the reader the option of digging deeper into each law as necessary. Granted (as other reviewers have observed): this isn't a ground-breaking book, but it serves as a very practical summary of what works with teams.My favorite law is The Law of the Scoreboard: The Team Can Make Adjustments When It Knows Where It Stands. In my corporate experience, too many team members aren't told the "score" or how far they've progressed against the final goal. My favorite line in the book is from Law #1--The Law of Significance: One is Too Small a Number to Achieve Greatness. "Nothing of significance as ever achieved by an individual acting alone"--which is a nice simplification of the famous FDR line. In one organization that I consulted to, Anthem Blue Cross, this book was widely read and applied, and the project teams benefited enormously from it.

But...there are also some difficulties I have with the book. There's a subtle bias towards management as if the anointed organizational leaders know more than the troops. I call this the "Father Knows Best" fallacy, a subtle form of patriarchy which frequently underlies conservative Christian perspectives on leadership. In my experience neither Father nor Mother knows better than front line team members--whether in large corporations or small organizations.

Perhaps because of that bias I don't hear any support for the rebel spirit that characterizes so many great teams--especially in the tech world, where freaks and geeks, dissidents and iconoclasts rule! (It's not unusual in many successful technology firms for small teams--or a few individuals on those teams--to thumb their noses at management and continue to work innovative projects that they're passionate about, until they eventually prove their worth and get major funding.)

Also, I don't hear any support for team diversity that capitalizes on differences in age, gender, cultural background, sexual preference, etc. to generate divergent views and creative conflict.(In "The Creative Priority" Jerry Hirshberg discusses the importance of selecting team members to deliberately produce "creative abrasion.")

And, finally, I don't hear any support for making teamwork FUN--including crazy-making activities and celebrations that often boost creativity and productivity (as exemplified by the teams of Southwest Airlines).

Yet despite these misgivings, this book is SO well organized, SO easy to digest, SO easy to apply, I can actually overlook what's missing and appreciate what's there.For a traditional slant on teamwork, this is actually the best book I've come across.It goes right up on my bookshelf next to "Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration" by Bennis and Biederman (a non-traditional slant on teamwork)--along with a half dozen other high-profile team books I haven't opened yet!

Product Description
Success is the way we learn to use two valuable things-our time and thought. Knowledge alone is not success; it is the way we use that knowledge. Use all your time constructively. It is only the aimless, worthless, unsuccessful ones who speak of killing time. The one who is killing time is destroying his opportunities, while the man who is successful is making his time live and making it useful. I always like to hear a person say that there isn't enough time in the day for him. That person is getting the most out of his life, and, I venture to say, he is succeeding. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Theft of a valuable book.
This book is an excellent work which will benefit anyone.

However, Wilder Publication, which put out this copy, has engaged in copyright theft.

The book was published in 1939 as listed by the copyright office.

It was registered to DeVorss and Company which publishes his works.

The people who put out this edition have done such a sloppy job that they can't even spell the word 'attraction" correctly. See the cover as shown above. They spell it as "attracktion".

They even have the nerve to list it as copyrighted by them in 2009! Thus, they claim below, no one is permitted to even quote from it without their permission.

The DeVorss edition keeps all of the original paragraph numbering and other aspects of the original.
http://www.amazon.com/Working-Law-Raymond-Holliwell/dp/0875168086

This edition is in tiny type and hard to read. There are numerous typos. The book is filled with other errors.

The book deserves a wide readership but not from pirates who return nothing to the Estate of the author.

As an author whose material has now been stolen and given away in torrents on the net by pirates, I urge all of you to support the authors and their legal representatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful laws of the Universe
What an amazing book.Very clear and precise.If you have struggled away with the Secrets 'Law of Attraction' and felt a little defeated at your efforts, this is the perfect book for you.It integrates all of the other 11 universal laws that really are necessary for you to be living the life of your dreams.I totally recommend this book if you are aiming to live a phenomenal life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is one of the best books I have ever read. The Universal Laws described in this book really do work and by studying them I was able to make dramatic improvements in the quality of my life. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in Law of Attraction titles, but especially to Christians who are trying to reconcile their belief in God and the Bible with the knowledge brought forth by the New Thought movement. I was introduced to it when I read "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne and since then I had been trying to figure out if and where God came into the story. I am delighted to say this book has all the answers. God uses specific Laws to run the universe and by following them, you can get the most out of your life. Read it, you won't regret.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gems and truth come in small packages
I'd give it more stars if I could.

I've read, studied and practiced Law of Attraction for 30+ years. If I had to recommend just ONE book _Working With the Law_ would be it. Don't let it's slim size fool you into passing it by! Even with the typos it is a gem of clarity.

Put this book into practice and you'll attract whatever you desire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Edited? No. Well written and easy to read? Yes!
If you just can't get past the several (not many, just several) typos in the book, then you'd be better off buying a much more expensive, yet well-edited and excellent book by Jerry and Esther Hicks. However, if you're like me and can look past the small flaws here and there, this will be a very easy and satisfying source of marvelous information for you! This is one of the few books in my library of research that I have read over and over! Raymond Holliwell speaks plainly and clearly about how the Universe works and his methods are tried and true by myself, so I can vouch for his information.

What I enjoy most is the fact that he doesn't beat the same drum repeatedly through the book. He breaks down the information so it's easily read and has all the information you'll ever want for living inside of 200 pages! It's a small book and for myself personally, I've written notes and thoughts in the margins and back. I plan to keep this book handy, because just reading his words gives you the vibration that makes you happy. It brings you back to a more grounded place, reading the information he details.

I give this one Five Stars because it is simple, describes the Universal Laws well and doesn't fatten the book up with overblown stories and unnecessary "stuff". ... Read more

Product Description
Monday morning's are hell. That's what Carolyn Sullivan is thinking as she arrives at her office at the Ventura County Probation Department. She's got a paper due for law school. Two high energy kids who need to be in different places at the same time. A mountain of debt. Her boss is on the warpath before she even has a chance to grab her first cup of coffee. But Carolyn's day is about to get a lot worse. One of her probationers has just been arrested for rape. It's a front-page headline story that leads squarely back to Carolyn's paper-strewn desk and overwhelming caseload. Could she have prevented the crime? She fears the top brass, pressured by the media, may destroy her career. Just when Carolyn should be lying low, instead she's assigned a sensitive case that's sure to have everyone breathing down her neck - supervising convicted killer and paranold schizophrenic Daneil Metroix. Carolyn dives into a case that everyone else seems to want to keep closed...one that leads behind the glossy exteriors of Ventura's most prominent sons into the darkest corners of the American dream. Someone doesn't want Carolyn to discover the truth.Someone who knows where she lives, where she goes, who she sees. Someone who will strike at the very heart of every mother's worst fear in order to silence her for good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Service
I purchased this book just several weeks before it arrived.The condition of the book was as stated and I was very happy with the prompt shipment.

1-0 out of 5 stars lack of research
I listened to the whole unabrigdged book to try to understand why this book would get published.I belive it is the worst book of its genre that I have listened to on CD or read.

There are several femal author's to choose from.Don't choose Ms. Rosenberg.Sullivan's Law (Rosenberg, Nancy Taylor)

2-0 out of 5 stars Nope - just not up to par with the rest of the genre
I love all things Grisham, Greg Iles, Stephen King, Philip Margolin and (my new fave) Karin Slaughter.This was my first try at Rosenberg.The story line was interesting enough to keep me going, but halfway through the book I gave up, which I don't often do.There were many discrepancies that annoyed me. I'd have to turn back pages, thinking "Didn't she already say.... yes, so what is she talking about here?" The writing didn't grab me either - kinda flat. I hate to sound like a snot, but this seemed to me a "dumbed-down" version of a suspense novel. I finally decided, "Give it up!"There are too many books on my to-be-read list to continue with this.Sorry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not good - just routine
In the world of mysteries and crime novels, the heroes tend to be somehow related to the law:cops, lawyers, crime reporters or private eyes.In Sullivan's Law, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg follows this trend but at the same time moves in a fresh direction:her main character, Carolyn Sullivan is a probation officer.In a world divided between the criminals (and their advocates) and the law enforcers, Sullivan is somewhere in the middle.

As the novel opens, one of Sullivan's old cases comes back to haunt her:a young man who she has more-or-less fallen off her supervision radar has just raped and almost killed a child.To some extent, this was not her fault, but she catches a bit of flak for it.Nonetheless, her boss (and former lover) assigns her to a new case:Daniel Metroix, who 23 years earlier, killed a cop's son.

When Carolyn starts reviewing his case, she comes to the realization that he may have been innocent of the crime and merely railroaded by the victim's father.This feeling is strengthened when people start trying to kill Daniel and in the process, endanger her.And, of course, since this is a mystery novel, the obvious killer (Daniel) is most likely not the real one.Somehow, with all her huge caseload, her attending night law school and raising two children (with a deadbeat dad of an ex-husband), Carolyn still find time to find the truth and have a little romance on the side.

Sullivan's Law is neither bad nor good; it is a straight three-star novel.While it is competently enough written to keep the reader turning the pages, it offers little that is out of the ordinary, beyond Carolyn's profession.Since I picked up three of Rosenberg's books cheaply, I will be reading her again, but there is nothing spectacular enough in her writing to (so far) make me go out of my way to buy anymore of her work.This is entertaining, but also strictly average.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rosenberg is a winner
Sullivan's Law was a can't put down novel.Rosenberg has to be one of the most thrilling and captivating author of our time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely delivery
I needed books for college and did not have very long to wait. I received my books ordered in a timely manner. I had never ordered anything online and was not sure about how secure this would be but it was totally worth. After I had compared prices with other ways to purchase I realized I found the best deal. I would not hesitate to order books or products this way again if I need anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource out there
Whether your are an entrepreneur, VC or lawyer, THIS is the book that you must read.It's really everything that you need to navigate the entire startup ecosystem.I've been in the industry for over a decade and I still use it as a reference and encourage both entrepreneurs and lawyers to read alike.I also think it's a great resource for VCs sitting on boards to make sure they are complying with all the latest and greatest regulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise yet fully inclusive, up-to-date
Includes all important areas of law for the entrepreneur.Was most helpful for our incorporation. Good, short, to-the-point, comparisons of S-corp, C-corp, LLC, partnership, and sole proprietorship.Still covered all issues and is updated to late 2007. This is important because the tax-code changes frequently (last major update was in 2003), and small changes to corporate structure and court pratices happen every year.Better than "Structuring Venture Capital, Private Equity, and Entrepreneurial Transactions."Better than "Starting Your Own Business" by Stephen C. Harper.Better than searching for piecemeal information on websites like news.YCombinator.

Other important areas covered are Contracts & Lease, Operational Liability, and Intellectual Property.I will be using this book heavily for those areas as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, just not for me.
This book goes into great detail about all aspects of Business Law. Anyone who currently owns a business or is thinking about opening a business needs to read this book, or at least have it near by as a reference guide.

However, the book is certainly aimed at Corporate USA and those who are looking to start up a BIG business. If you are looking to open or currently own a Small Business, then there are better books on the market that are tailored more to your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent guide
A book that every entrepreneur should read.Read it before you start the company, it will help you a lot. ... Read more
