Book Description
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people are becoming more and more visible in all aspects of American culture, from party politics to MTV videos.

Despite the recent queer publishing explosion, few texts cover a broad range of topics around sexual and gender identities. Most existing works are high-level theory books, texts focused upon specific disciplines or topics, or practical guides aimed primarily at a heterosexual audience or people just beginning to come out. There has been to date no general, accessible, and inclusive work suitable for use as an introduction to Queer Studies.

In this collection, contributors assess the conflict between postmodernism and identity, the concept which typically serves as a linchpin for social and political organizing. Others address queer theory, looking specifically at how we define it, how it informs political activism, and how we can theorize such aspects of sexual performance/behaviors as s/m or butch-femme relationships.

The volume contains contributions from both established and newly emerging Queer Studies scholars, including Amber Ault, M. V. Lee Badgett, Warren J. Blumenfeld, Gregory Conerly, Patricia L. Duncan, Ruth Goldman, Lynda Goldstein, Sherrie A. Inness, Christopher James, Amanda Udis-Kessler, JeeYeun Lee, Michele E. Lloyd, Tracy D. Morgan, Ki Namaste, Vernon Rosario II, Paula Rust, and Siobhan Somerville.

Beemyn has edited an anthology of works from emerging academics who are studying gay life outside of the white, vanilla, male mode. This anthology has great articles on gay black men, Asian lesbians, biracial female sadomasochists, etc.It is a very welcome edition to my gay studies collection.I find myself citing articles from this anthology all the time.I truly recommend this book.I think gay men and lesbians of color will truly appreciate it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars groundbreaking
This book was the first of its kind and caused uproar within the British police ranks when it was first published in 1993. Based on the author's PhD research with anonymous officers, the book contains both a semi-academic introduction to each issue but consists mostly of edited interviews with gay and lesbian police officers that are easy and interesting reading. The combination of Burke's socio-psychological observations along with the spoken word, make this book compelling and it remains a must read for all police officers and anyone else who still mis-understands what it really means to be gay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Totally gobsmacking
Marc E Burke was an officer in the British police force from 1982- 1986 and his book is a collection of transcribed interviews from currently serving and retired British police officers, bracketted by Burke'spsychological analysis and commentary on the issues raised.Burke says heprepared the book for a cross section of readers. The general public toraise awareness of police "culture", the force to highlight theexperiences of gay police, and the gay community to show the commitmentmost gay police have to working with them. The biggest discovery in thebook is the notion of gay police living in a "no-man's land"whereby they don't connect with either their workmates because they aregay, or the community because they are police, and thereby bear thecontempt of both. The book makes the issue of coming out in the force amajor trauma and how a number of officers have resigned because of it. Theforce is perceived to be an ultra-conservative body and there are as manycases of officers showing their support for an "out" copper asthere are of harassment by homophobic police. In the chapter"Casualties" there is the story of a former Irish officer houndedfor years because he was seen living with his male lover, who waseventually dishonorourably discharged. The horror of this experience isexpressed in 13 rivetting pages of beautifully written prose. All theinterviews in the book are surprisingly good- easy to read and often funnyand enlightening. What is not good is Burke's tedious commentaries, sincehe points out what is obvious from the interviews and his academic approachis often inaccessible. Burke's commentary is presented in plain text whilethe interviews are in italic, so perhaps my preference is influenced bywhat my eyes go to more easily. An annoying note is that each interviewgives the officers rank but unless you have a prior knowledge of theseacronyms or can memorise the list at the end of the book, you'll beflicking back and forth to find out what all those letters mean, or notbother as I soon learnt to do.A few things gave me a giggle. The SanFrancisco Golden State Police Officer's Association (GSPOA) used to beknown as Pigs in Paradise (PIP) and their newsletter is called "TheHog Caller". The myth that gays are attracted to men in uniform andsavour the use of their handcuffs and truncheons (!). That it is always themost homophobic men that gay men are least likely to want to bed. Thatforce hockey is the secret lesbian society. And the classic beat story ofan officer jumping out from a van and chasing a man across the ClaphamCommon. When the man gave up out of exhaustion, the officer tapped him onthe shoulder and said "You're it now. You have to chase me .."and ran off back to the man. ... Read more

Book Description
The essays in this volume explore the psychological dimensions of lesbian, gay, and bisexual identities from puberty to adulthood. The essays focus upon three general areas: theoretical frameworks that are important in understanding the development of sexual orientation in adolescence, challenges faced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth, and issues related to interventions and services for LGB youths in community settings. Changes in biological processes, relationships, and community interactions influence the emergence of sexuality in all young people. The process is more complex and difficult for LGB teenagers. Fortunately, the cultural changes that have allowed LGB youths to become more open about themselves at earlier ages have also allowed social and behavioral scientists the opportunity to study them. This volume presents authoritative, research-based reviews of this ever-increasing area of study and social concern. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Representation of the Problems Facing LGBT Youths
One of my fraternity brothers going through a sexuality crisis (OX), recommended that I check this book out from the library.I was also going through a Queer Lit class, so I decided it would be a good reference.

This book, even though I know and have befriended many LGBT people, has helped me to understand the development, stages, and problems which many secondary and post-secondary school students face.Traumatizing, perhaps,Normal, almost certainly. This book paints a picture of homosexual adolescence which really entices the reader to envision new ways of thinking.

Of particular interest are the chapters on biology and tolerance for adolescent youths, but the entire book (while very scholarly, reminiscent of the texts a professor might make you read) has a feel to it that really strives to open your mind.Highly recommended, especially for those going through a sexuality crisis, taking a class on such a crisis, or who has a friend who is going through such a crisis. ... Book Description

The Fifth Volume in the annual series Psychological Perspective on Lesbian and Gay Issues is devoted to providing a basic collection of resources for educators, practitioners and researchers in Lesbian/Gay Bisexual and Transgendered Psychology. The volume and the series are sponsored by Division 44 of the American Psychological Association.

Academic psychologists have been challenged to make psychology curricula more inclusive. Program changes involve revising undergraduate and graduate course material and content to represent the full spectrum of sexual orientation identity, development and life dilemmas. Similarly, trainers and educators responsible for training in related mental health disciplines, mental health agencies and other venues that deliver psychological services to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgendered Psychology individuals have been appropriately challenged to make training competent practitioners a priority. Many practitioners who have had no training in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgendered Psychology find themselves confronted with clients that they feel ill equipped to address. They often have the desire to develop clinical competencies in this area, but dont know where to begin. This volume is intended to serve as a basic resource with information on salient lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered psychology issues and to provide the reader with a range of references and other resources to explore key identity, development, and other subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Homophobia
An excellent resource manual of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered psychology with a strong emphasis on their segregation from mainstream America.Includes strong literature on the structural isolation of lesbians and gay males and how the creation of a subculture leads to negative stereotypes, warped images, and fictional creations that are used to justify oppression of members of the disadvantaged group.Depicts and explains the homophobic image of homosexuals as a small, self-interested group, favoring their own, commanding a disproportionate world influence.Relates homophobia to other oppressed groups, including Jews as self-interested and cliquish, and African American males as sexual predators. The book also addresses how homophobes justify their behavior through logic and morality. Finally, it provides interesting research on reducing homophobia, including studies on contact and cooperation as means to resolve group conflict. ... Adam Mastoon's beautifully reproduced photographs of gay, lesbian, and bisexual young people are a revelation: each subject, posed yet casual, looks directly into the camera and invites us into his or her life. But the book is more than a photo gallery, and the personal statements written by each young person brings a sense of what it means to be a gay youth today. In a world in which gay teens are told that they either don't exist or should change their sexual orientation, The Shared Heart is a beacon of hope, clarity, and joy.Book Description
With candor and sensitivity, thirty-nine young people write frankly about their own homosexuality. Told with honesty and courage, their words express the fundamental need all people share for acceptance and respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Powerful Account I've Ever Read
This was the first book I found when I started accepting my sexuality, and I have to say I was so moved by what I read here that I found the courage to come out myself. What makes this book so much more different from other accounts of GLBTQ youth is that this book also comes with a photo of each teen, so we have faces to match the stories with. And it's not all "boo-hoo, we're unaccepted gays", though we do have a few stories like that. But we also have tons of stories that cover all possible societal reactions, and each story provides a ray of hope for any GLBTQ person.A classic that must be on the shelf of every GLBTQ person's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shared Heart, Shared Story
I found this book in the local libary and I automatically sat down and read it from cover to cover. This is the book that every young lonely GLBT youth needs. It shows that we are not alone and that there are other teens out there just like us. It is a fabulos book and it is the best thinh that has happened to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous life stories, personality-filled photos
These beautiful and complex photographs depict humor, integrity, joy, pain, and courage. The photographer's technical expertise is matched and perhaps even surpassed by his eye for the "soul" of his subjects. The photos are complemented by first-person stories that reveal the journeys and challenges these young people have faced and overcome. It sounds corny, but this book made me proud of both the photographer and his subjects. This book does what great art and literature are supposed to do. It is uplifting and inspiring, and it lights the path toward a brighter future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving book.
This is a beautiful book that I received as a gift from my boyfriend. Anyone will profit from reading it. The stories in it, written by a number of lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth, are honest and very moving. It says toall the people who are still in the closet: wherever you are, you're notalone! And it also shows how gay people are just as diverse, talented, andlovable as straight people anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A beautiful and moving book. Had there been a book like this available when I was coming out, I would have felt less terrified and alone. Congratulations to the brave youth represented in this book, and thank youto Adam Mastoon for providing such a valuable resource. ... Read more

The book is divided into eight sections that deal with the meaning of sexual orientation; the psychological dimensions of prejudice, discrimination, and violence; identity development; diversity; relationships and families; adolescence, midlife, and aging; mental health; and the status of practice, research, and public policy bearing on homosexuality and bisexuality in American psychology.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does Love Make a Family?
"Love makes a family" originally started as a photo exhibition depicting gay, lesbian, transgender&bisexual families. The exhibition toured the US- and there were even different versions of it,one for kids, another for adults. It does beg the question- if it's so family-friendly&all about families, why did there have to be different versions? The exhibition faced controversy as it toured public libraries. Though it initially fanned the flames of controversy, its message came to be seen as ubiquitous. Gay parenting is more accepted than gay marriage;it's commonplace for same-sex couples to have children.

"Love makes a family" was the spoonful of sugar that made the medicine go down. One can sympathize with the families' struggles. It's not just the case of two men or two women raising children;there are also bisexuals and the transgendered. The book's philosophycan be summed up as-family is how you define it. A free-for-all. Granted, the photography is beautiful;in a sense,"Love makes a family" is a great queer parenting coffee table book. (However, the amount of text is daunting&at times intrusive)

"Love makes a family" shows how times have changed. Back when the exhibition traveled from coast to coast, from Boston to Portland, New York City to Dallas, people debated gay parenting. Now, a queer family is any other kind of family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography...
This is a must have for anyone with an alternative family. We can't wait to share this book with our family & friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, Very Surprising
What I enjoyed about this book is that it covered not only the people like me (gay, male, plans to have children), but it also gave me an insight into some others who have very different lives but the same issues of"alternative-ness."It actually contained a few surprises andgave me some ideas about how a family could be built from things I'd neverconsidered before.

Book Description
Soon to be translated into Japanese! The Bisexual Option explores bisexuality, explains the bisexual, and explodes myths surrounding this large “unseen” segment of the population. Now in its second edition, this intriguing book gives an overview of bisexuality. As there is still no book that covers the subject like this one, it is must reading for establishing a contemporary view of bisexuality and those committed to a bisexual lifestyle. Fritz Klein, an experienced psychiatrist and expert in bisexuality and sexual orientation, explains the concept and the variables of sexual orientation and where bisexuality fits.

He covers many subjects in the book including:

  • myths of bisexual nonexistence and the “either/or” dilemma
  • intimacy, both emotional and sexual
  • an explanation of bisexuality and the Oedipus Complex
  • definitions and examples of the healthy and troubled bisexual
  • major sociological findings about bisexuality
  • the bisexual in history
  • the bisexual as depicted in the arts
  • factors that will influence bisexuality in the future

The book helps readers understand where they fit on the sexual orientation continuum. The Bisexual Option aids in explaining who bisexuals are and why they have problems in heterosexual as well as homosexual societies and shows bisexuals that they are not alone. Even helping professionals will find information on this “invisible” but large segment of the population.

A variety of readers will want to read The Bisexual Option including the bisexual community and individual bisexuals, the homosexual communities which include many bisexuals, mental health practitioners, psychologists, both students and professionals, university students, married partners of bisexuals, HIV/AIDS workers who wish to become acquainted with how bisexuality affects the risk to the heterosexual community, sexologists, and researchers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Need to know basis
This is an important part of the Bisexual living. Bisex 101 you could say. How to plot your sexual preference and lifestyle in a scientific way. To further expand your knowledge there are newer books though, but can't hurt to have this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter
This is the very first book I ever read on bisexuality.Since then I've found better books on the subject, but this is still a book I'll put my nose into again. The reason it's not the "best" is because I didn't relate to most of the bisexuals Klein interviewed. It was kind of a downer, some of the uptitebis in this book. Then again, he didn't interview very many people.Especially compared to "Bi Any Other Name:Bisexual People Speak Out".Now that is a book where I related to many more of the people.Just goes to show we (bis) are all different.I will always have a lot of respect for Fritz Klein and found his scale on bisexuality very good.Although I don't agree who we prefer to socialize with has anything to do with orientation.I could enjoy a cup of coffee with anyone, that says zilch about orientation! Other than that, I liked the scale. This is an interesting read, for the most part.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bisexuality: A Feelgood Scholarly Book
As one half of a long-time male to male rlp, with a three year periodic sexual rlp with a bisexual male, I was interested in reading Dr Klein's book. This is a scholarly and thoughtful addition to the scant litteratureon bisexuality. Dr Klein is a Psychiatrist who specialises in sexualorientation and rlp problems.

In the first half of his book Dr Kleintells us why bisexuality is so hated and misunderstood in gay and"straight" society. He then goes on to reproach the (American)Psychological establishment for their slowness to accept bisexuality as agiven. (This reads almost as an apologia, given the conservatism of medicalculture). Dr Klein presents a number of patient profiles, and clinicalstatistics. Disturbingly, there are very few lower-middle class, or poorpeople represented. The message seems clear: it's easier to be bi' andorganise your sexual mobility if you're affluent. This is a book thatcelebrates the diversity of bisexuality, and encourages the like-orientedto see themselves as "normal". As for the really difficult anduncomfortable issues (ie: the agonising struggle of hetero' and homosexualpartners to bisexual men and women, Dr Klein offers little advice.Reprinted from an earlier adition, this 1993 second edition has the"feel good" feeling of 1980's/1990's books on Sociology andPsychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging exploration of human sexuality
This well-written book is a must-read for anyone struggling, as I have, with bisexuality. It is hopeful, insightful, and very liberating.Dr. Klein presents an engaging balance of theory, research, and case examples. This is a very real and honest presentation of bisexuality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for discovering sexual identity.
I liked this book.I found it to be very affirming of my experience. It offers a balanced approach to exploring your sexual identity.I am married and have struggled with my attractions to men. This book shows that thereare options for persons attracted to both sexes. It's not black and white. There is a HUGE middle and bisexuality encompasses it.I am bisexual andI feel much freer to make choices out of truth, than feeling like I 'haveto be gay' or I'm 'in transition' because I enjoy my attractions to bothsexes. The personal stories in the book are a great source of hope andguidance.Well done! ... Book Description
Traditional understandings of families incorporate the assumption that both parents and children are heterosexual. Only quite recently have psychological research and theory examined lesbian, gay, and bisexual lives within the context of families. In Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities in Families, Charlotte J. Patterson and Anthony R. D'Augelli draw together the psychological research and examine the entire multifaceted experience of such relationships. The editors bring together the most important recent scholarship and empirical research on family relationships and dynamics, and they identify directions for future research and theory in this area. The first section of the book discusses different perspectives on sexual orientation in families. It focuses on evidence relevant to genetic contributions to sexual orientation, and looks at social interactions and their development. Ethnic identity and family dynamics along with cultural influences on conceptions of sexual orientation and family lives are examined. The next section focuses on key aspects of interpersonal relationships within the families of lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals. The interactions between children and parents of different sexual orientations and a variety of intergenerational processes in lesbian-headed families are explored. The final section of the book focuses oncommunity and contextual issues. It explores economic issues, antilesbian/antigay attitudes, social structures, and social policies that affect lesbian and gay family lives. This volume, one of the first to discuss the family relationships of gay men, lesbians, and bisexual men and women, will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, social workers, scholars of gay/lesbian/bisexual studies, as well as laypersons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative Views
The compilation of all the Art Educators and Artists in this book shows what great thought, work, and research was done in the writing of this book by the authors.
All the views of Lesbian, Gay, and Transgender issues brought forth in this book are very personal and thought provoking, to make this a very interesting and informative book.
There is so few reading materials available to the public on this subject matter, and as a result many people today are not very well informed concening issues raised in this book.
In my opinion, I feel reading this book will shed new light on the artists views who speak out. ... Read more

Many of the stories in Out & About Campus are as upsetting or enraging as one would imagine, given the scenario of a queer or questioning youth thrust into a historically straight institution and surrounded by other equally insecure young people. Tales of intolerant classmates and obstructive professors abound, with the usual threats of violence, gay bashings, and episodes of self-loathing. But the gradual movement toward acceptance of "diversity" on college campuses since the mid-1980s has clearly altered the social landscape. In "Sisterhood," for instance, Stephanie J. Stillman recounts her gradual coming-out to her sorority sisters, most of whom had figured it out for themselves and none of whom condemned her as she had expected. In "Competitive College," Ruth Wielgosz explains the informal designation of "Big Dyke on Campus" at Bryn Mawr and describes the requirements for the position (as listed in the college newspaper), which begin with "(1) Has lots of attitude, very self-confident," then move on to "(5) Unattainable, or nearly so, (6) Many people have crushes on her, and many more feel too unworthy, and (7) Visually impressive, especially with regard to hair." Several contributors describe their political activism on campus and their service work for other gay students. Overall, these stories provide an encouraging look at an unprecedented cultural expansion. --Regina Marler Book Description
Introduction

So, how do you know?

If there is one thread that binds the stories in this collection, it is the question of "How do you know?" "How do you know you're gay?" "How do you know who's safe to come out to?" "How do you know how to respond to hate?" "How do you know how to create change on campus?" These questions and a variety of others asked and answered in the following stories are the same questions many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and questioning college students across the country ask.

Though the issues raised in these stories clearly speak to the experiences of LGBT students, they also speak to the questions asked by many student allies and college faculty, staff, and administrators: "How do you know how to be an ally?" "How do you know if your campus is safe?" "How do you know what to do when hate happens?" "How do you know what efforts will make a difference?"

While many excellent research studies and books discuss issues facing LGBT college students, when we began this project we found no major publications that allowed students simply to give voice to their experiences. Indeed, over the time that we solicited contributions to this collection, more than 500 students wrote us to say they wished they had a book like this. We hope Out & About Campus will fill part of this need.

There is no question that for many people, college is a time of intensive personal exploration. College students questioning their sexuality or gender identity and students coming out or transitioning gender identities face an added dimension in their identity exploration. Many students who question their sexuality or gender identity do so for the first time in college. But even for those who know going into college that they are LGB or T, those years may be the first time they have had the chance to meet others like them or search out meaningful resources.

In the last decade there has been an explosive growth of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and ally resources on college campuses. More than 800 LGBT college campus student groups exist across the nation; approximately five dozen colleges and universities (and the numbers are increasing rapidly) have o ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, gay or straight
Coming out of the closet is one of those things that makes one feel out in the open and sticking out like a sore thumb. You contemplate that you might be gay or bi, then finally realize that you are and come out of the closet.Right away, especially if you're anything like me, that's exactly what goes on.Surely, right off the bat, one will feel that they can't talk on the same level let alone relate to anyone.Out of curiosity, I bought this book, and read a bunch of the stories.Although not all of them are just about coming out of the closet, I could relate to a lot of the stories, and probably anyone that has ever come out and goes or has gone to college can relate to at least one of them. All in all, however, in order to get the most out of college, and an open minded perspective, I strongly recommend this collection to anyone just graduating high school and bound for college.Or, don't, and end up with everyone hating you, for you haven't outgrown the high school labeling mentality of calling every gay man a faggot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Engaging, Helpful
The voices of the students come through eloquently in this engaging and fascinating book. The diversity of the GLBT experience on campus is evident. The book helps provide insight into the various experiences ofGLBT students and helps readers see the experience as not at allmonolithic. I recommend this excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
As a straight college-age female, I was worried that I might not be able to identify and relate tothe experiences of the writers. As I read, however, the authors made me realize that their stories are simply an account of their struggle to do what they feel is right--a process to whichanyone can relate.I especially enjoyed the piece by the student from theUniversity of Texas, Andrew Gray. His courage and determination are trulyremarkable.Yay Andrew! ... Book Description

This book provides a framework for affirmative, empirically supported cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients. Guidelines for competent assessment and treatment are integrated with practical descriptions of widely used CBT applications. In addition to presenting powerful treatment tools for depression, anxiety, and other problems encountered by gay and straight clients alike, the book offers clear-cut guidance on helping individuals and couples cope with the stresses of sexual minority status. Rich case illustrations bring to life the diversity of lesbian and gay communities, highlighting commonalities as well as differences among the issues that clients bring to therapy. Filling a crucial gap in the literature, this is an important resource for therapists in a range of settings, from CBT newcomers to experienced practitioners. Appendices include resources and sample client and therapist forms.
