Product Description

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people are becoming more and more visible in all aspects of American culture, from party politics to MTV videos.

Despite the recent queer publishing explosion, few texts cover a broad range of topics around sexual and gender identities. Most existing works are high-level theory books, texts focused upon specific disciplines or topics, or practical guides aimed primarily at a heterosexual audience or people just beginning to come out. There has been to date no general, accessible, and inclusive work suitable for use as an introduction to Queer Studies.

In this collection, contributors assess the conflict between postmodernism and identity, the concept which typically serves as a linchpin for social and political organizing. Others address queer theory, looking specifically at how we define it, how it informs political activism, and how we can theorize such aspects of sexual performance/behaviors as s/m or butch-femme relationships.

The volume contains contributions from both established and newly emerging Queer Studies scholars, including Amber Ault, M. V. Lee Badgett, Warren J. Blumenfeld, Gregory Conerly, Patricia L. Duncan, Ruth Goldman, Lynda Goldstein, Sherrie A. Inness, Christopher James, Amanda Udis-Kessler, JeeYeun Lee, Michele E. Lloyd, Tracy D. Morgan, Ki Namaste, Vernon Rosario II, Paula Rust, and Siobhan Somerville.

2-0 out of 5 stars DEALING WITH SOCIAL OPPRESSION BASED ON VARIATIONS OF SEX AND GENDER
Brett Beemyn & Mickey Eliason, editors
Queer Studies:
A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Anthology

(New York: New York University Press, 1996) 318 pages
(ISBN: 0-8147-1257-6; hardcover)
(ISBN: 0-8147-1258-4; paperback)
(Library of Congress call number: HQ76.25.Q385 1996)

Twenty academics with some variation of sex and/or gender
explore the many dimensions of these variations.
They are all sympathetic to GBLTs.
But none of these essays attempts to explain the phenomena.
Rather, the book is more political, attempting to deal with
social oppression based on variations of sex and gender.

There is deep concern about the best concepts for each variation,
for example how different racial and ethnic groups deal with lesbianism.

There is no discussion of the sexuality
of people who have variations of sex and gender.
That is all left implicit and understood
--perhaps because the authors assume that the only readers
will be people who already understand everything
about their variant sexual feelings and behavior.
If all the readers are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender,
they need no exploration of these phenomena.
Rather, they need to work on their common oppression.

There is some discussion of the disputes
within the collection of all people
who have some variation of sex and/or gender,
for example conflicts between lesbian and bisexual women.
Each sub-group claims to be
more marginalized and erased than the others.

This anthology gives a few glimpses into the minds of
college professors who participate in the various communities
of people who have some variation of sex and/or gender.
But it adds little to the understanding of the phenomena.

If you would like to know about better books on this subject,
search the Internet for these exact words:
"VARIATIONS OF SEX & GENDER BIBLIOGRAPHY".

James Leonard Park, author of
Variations of Sex & Gender:
Six Phenomena Frequently Confused

Beemyn has edited an anthology of works from emerging academics who are studying gay life outside of the white, vanilla, male mode. This anthology has great articles on gay black men, Asian lesbians, biracial female sadomasochists, etc.It is a very welcome edition to my gay studies collection.I find myself citing articles from this anthology all the time.I truly recommend this book.I think gay men and lesbians of color will truly appreciate it. ... Product Description
This book examines the delicate and controversial issues which affect the lives of police officers who are lesbian, gay or bisexual. Drawing on interviews with officers from various regions, departments and ranks, the book provides a sociological account of two of society's most contentious minority communities. The material asks which community, if any, has the loyalty of these officers; what it is that makes a person attempt to combine what would appear to be incompatible, and what strategies lesbian, gay and biosexual officers adopt to cope with the pressures of living a double life and when enforcing laws which discriminate against gay people. Officers discuss coming out, equal opportunities, cruising, cottaging and "queer bashing". The interviewees tell their stories with emotion, anger, honesty, frustration, regret and humour. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars groundbreaking
This book was the first of its kind and caused uproar within the British police ranks when it was first published in 1993. Based on the author's PhD research with anonymous officers, the book contains both a semi-academic introduction to each issue but consists mostly of edited interviews with gay and lesbian police officers that are easy and interesting reading. The combination of Burke's socio-psychological observations along with the spoken word, make this book compelling and it remains a must read for all police officers and anyone else who still mis-understands what it really means to be gay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Totally gobsmacking
Marc E Burke was an officer in the British police force from 1982- 1986 and his book is a collection of transcribed interviews from currently serving and retired British police officers, bracketted by Burke'spsychological analysis and commentary on the issues raised.Burke says heprepared the book for a cross section of readers. The general public toraise awareness of police "culture", the force to highlight theexperiences of gay police, and the gay community to show the commitmentmost gay police have to working with them. The biggest discovery in thebook is the notion of gay police living in a "no-man's land"whereby they don't connect with either their workmates because they aregay, or the community because they are police, and thereby bear thecontempt of both. The book makes the issue of coming out in the force amajor trauma and how a number of officers have resigned because of it. Theforce is perceived to be an ultra-conservative body and there are as manycases of officers showing their support for an "out" copper asthere are of harassment by homophobic police. In the chapter"Casualties" there is the story of a former Irish officer houndedfor years because he was seen living with his male lover, who waseventually dishonorourably discharged. The horror of this experience isexpressed in 13 rivetting pages of beautifully written prose. All theinterviews in the book are surprisingly good- easy to read and often funnyand enlightening. What is not good is Burke's tedious commentaries, sincehe points out what is obvious from the interviews and his academic approachis often inaccessible. Burke's commentary is presented in plain text whilethe interviews are in italic, so perhaps my preference is influenced bywhat my eyes go to more easily. An annoying note is that each interviewgives the officers rank but unless you have a prior knowledge of theseacronyms or can memorise the list at the end of the book, you'll beflicking back and forth to find out what all those letters mean, or notbother as I soon learnt to do.A few things gave me a giggle. The SanFrancisco Golden State Police Officer's Association (GSPOA) used to beknown as Pigs in Paradise (PIP) and their newsletter is called "TheHog Caller". The myth that gays are attracted to men in uniform andsavour the use of their handcuffs and truncheons (!). That it is always themost homophobic men that gay men are least likely to want to bed. Thatforce hockey is the secret lesbian society. And the classic beat story ofan officer jumping out from a van and chasing a man across the ClaphamCommon. When the man gave up out of exhaustion, the officer tapped him onthe shoulder and said "You're it now. You have to chase me .."and ran off back to the man. ... Read more

Product Description
Packed to the hilt with living narratives, scholarly research, and problem-solution scenarios, Queer Kids: The Challenges and Promise for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Youth examines the unique challenges faced by today’s homosexual young adults. You’ll learn what modern-day queer kids do to cope, survive, and find understanding in a world riddled with homophobic intolerance.

Queer Kids is a lens of clarity that will help the average straight adult--and maybe even the average gay adult--see things from a kid’s point of view. Its detail-oriented, well-wrought chapters will provide you with literally hundreds of stories of young people who are trying to define themselves sexually and emotionally in a society of criss-crossing judgment, stereotyping, anger, and expectation. Aimed at three target groups--counselors, parents, and youth--this book introduces you to a variety of interesting kids, offers you a look at the process of coming out, and helps you grasp the experience of queer identification. Specifically, you’ll read about:

  • queer kids and their families and peers
  • the medical/health care profession’s impact on queer kids
  • the teachers and counselors of gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth
  • how to alleviate harrassment, abuse, withdrawal, and loneliness
  • the effects of familial denial, prejudiced counselors, and standoffish gay adults

Being a kid is tough--but being a queer kid can be even tougher. Fortunately, Queer Kids is available for students, ministers, teachers, youth- and health-care workers, and especially the friends and families of teens who are working through the personal turbulence that too often accompanies sexual and emotional definition. Guided by its upfront approach and practical resource list of written, computer, and telephone aids, you’ll see that a solution is not as distant as you think. Read it, and relearn what it means to be a kid again.

This handbook is intended for faculty and administrators who wish to create a welcoming and safe environment for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students on our campuses. It will help readers, even those who may struggle personally with understanding non-heterosexual identities, gain a clearer understanding of the important issues facing these students. While some students arrive on campus with full clarity about their sexual identities, others may just be discovering their orientations while in our institutions. It is difficult to provide the attention LGBT students need if we do not understand the crises affecting them or how to address them. Each chapter analyzes specific issues affecting these students and offers recommendations or suggestions for change. Some of the areas discussed include: identity development theories, residence halls, career planning, health and counseling centers, HIV/AIDS, and student leadership and organizational development. Non-heterosexual faculty and staff may also find this work useful as they attempt to discover themselves in academic and educational literature. ... Read more

Product Description

The city of Buenos Aires has guaranteed all couples, regardless of gender, the right to register civil unions. Mexico City has approved the Cohabitation Law, which grants same-sex couples marital rights identical to those of common-law relationships between men and women. Yet, a gay man was murdered every two days in Latin America in 2005, and Brazil recently led the world in homophobic murders. These facts illustrate the wide disparity in the treatment and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations across the region.

The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America presents the first English-language reader on LGBT politics in Latin America. Representing a range of contemporary works by scholars, activists, analysts, and politicians, the chapters address LGBT issues in nations from Cuba to Argentina. In their many findings, two main themes emerge: the struggle for LGBT rights has made significant inroads in the first decade of the twenty-first century (though not in every domain or every region); and the advances made were slow in coming compared to other social movements.

The articles uncover the many obstacles that LGBT activists face in establishing new laws and breaking down societal barriers. They identify perhaps the greatest roadblock in Latin American culture as an omnipresent system of “heteronormativity,” wherein heterosexuality, patriarchalism, gender hierarchies, and economic structures are deeply rooted in nearly every level of society. Along these lines, the texts explore specific impediments including family dependence, lack of public spaces, job opportunities, religious dictums, personal security, the complicated relationship between leftist political parties and LGBT movements in the region, and the ever-present “closets,” which keep LGBT issues out of the public eye.

The volume also looks to the future of LGBT activism in Latin America in areas such as globalization, changing demographics, the role of NGOs, and the rise of economic levels and education across societies, which may aid in a greater awareness of LGBT politics and issues. As the editors posit, to be democratic in the truest sense of the word, nations must recognize and address all segments of their populations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Representation of the Problems Facing LGBT Youths
One of my fraternity brothers going through a sexuality crisis (OX), recommended that I check this book out from the library.I was also going through a Queer Lit class, so I decided it would be a good reference.

This book, even though I know and have befriended many LGBT people, has helped me to understand the development, stages, and problems which many secondary and post-secondary school students face.Traumatizing, perhaps,Normal, almost certainly. This book paints a picture of homosexual adolescence which really entices the reader to envision new ways of thinking.

Of particular interest are the chapters on biology and tolerance for adolescent youths, but the entire book (while very scholarly, reminiscent of the texts a professor might make you read) has a feel to it that really strives to open your mind.Highly recommended, especially for those going through a sexuality crisis, taking a class on such a crisis, or who has a friend who is going through such a crisis. ... The LGBT community also encounters legal barriers to government recognition of their same-sex relationships and relationships to their own children. Policy Issues Affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Families addresses partner recognition, parenting, issues affecting children of LGBT parents, health care, discrimination, senior care and elder rights, and equal access to social services.

Sean Cahill and Sarah Tobias provide up-to-date, accurate analysis of the major policies affecting LGBT people, their same-sex partners, and their children. This valuable resource offers literature reviews of demographic research as well as original research based on the U.S. Census same-sex couple sample.  It also provides a look at the 30-year history of right-wing anti-gay activism and the intra-community intellectual debates over the fight for marriage.

"The sheer diversity of gay people and opinion shines through Cahill and Tobias's fact-packed depiction of same-sex couples and their kids, their needs and day-to-day challenges, and the movement for fairness and the freedom to marry. The disparate personal stories and struggles in this informative book underscore the importance of ending discrimination in marriage and ensuring that no family is left behind."

—Evan Wolfson, Founder and Executive Director of the Freedom to Marry Project

"A concise, comprehensive guide to gay-family issues that combines an impassioned progressive sensibility with a firm respect for facts."
—Jonathan Rauch, senior writer and columnist for National Journal, Atlantic Monthly correspondent, and author of Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America

—Ellen Andersen, Indiana University–Purdue University at Indianapolis

4-0 out of 5 stars A Compact, Readable Analysis of Issues Affecting LGBT Families
This book sounds like the sort that gathers dust on the shelves of politicians and policy wonks. Cahill and Tobias have, however, written a compact, readable analysis of the major issues affecting LGBT families today. It belongs in the homes of anyone with even a small claim to interest in these matters.

One of the work's strengths is that it brings together information that is otherwise scattered across various volumes and Web sites. Anyone who writes or talks about LGBT families, whether professionally, in a volunteer role, or in the supermarket to their neighbors will benefit from being able to answer these questions quickly and accurately.

The book is more than just a compilation of facts, though. It weaves them into the history of the LGBT rights movement and the current debates on LGBT rights both within and outside the LGBT community. It also includes issues not often aired in mainstream coverage of LGBT rights, such as the role of race in the marriage debate, the impact of the debate on low-income lesbian mothers, elder concerns, and domestic violence.

The book is not perfect. Many of its statistics are a year or two old. Still, the references are clear and there is a good bibliography, so those who need the latest information will know where to find it. The authors sometimes also omit relevant details, such as the fact that Vice President Cheney's waffling on same-sex marriage might be because of his dual role as a member of the Bush administration and the father of a lesbian.

Despite these drawbacks, the book is the most accessible single volume on the whole sweep of LGBT family rights, packing facts, history, and talking points into less than 150 pages. It will be an educational read and become a valuable reference. ... Read more

Product Description

Whether one defines sexual orientation as sexual behavior, self-identification, or attraction, sexual orientation is primarily about motivation. The same-sex marriage debate is part of a broader discussion about sexual orientation that we are having as a society. Many of the issues have or should be addressed by psychology and related fields, yet this literature is not yet well-known. Thus, the goal of this volume is to provide a forum for leading scholars to share their work on a variety of topics including the "coming out" experience, same-sex families, hate crimes and bias, and psychobiological underpinning of sexual orientation. Because gays, lesbians, bisexuals and their families live with an evolving legal status for their civing rights and protections, this volume also examines the topic from a legal perspective.
