5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring Psychology
Excellent book - currently using it for Psychology course but this book is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have bought my share of text books, and more often then not I cringe at the cost for what you get. Often I find that my lecture materials are useful and the text is not.

Not so this book! I loved it (although the chapters can be a little long)

PROS: the quizzes throughout chapters to test your understanding and an associated website with practice multiple choice and review questions that were invaluable for preparing for my class tests.

CONS: cover a bit soft and easily damaged when carrying it with you and book is heavy ... Read more

Book Description

David Myers’s Psychology is a textbook like no other—always fresh, always introducing effective new tools for teaching and learning, and always attuned to the fascinating ways that new research can shape the introductory psychology course. The new Eighth Edition is vintage Myers. It redefines excellence for an introductory psychology textbook, raising the standard with its expanded emphasis on diversity and gender issues, its incorporation of new frontiers in research studies in such areas as neuroscience and cognition, new learning features, and its expanded media/supplements package.

Myers continues the tradition of previous editions of bonding psychological science with a broad perspective that engages both the mind and the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
Myers' book is unquestionably the best text for an AP Psych or introductory psychology course.I used his text when I took AP Psych (and got a 5 on the AP exam using it) and continued to refer to it throughout college.Myers' writing style is fluid, making this an enjoyable read. His understanding of his subject is solid, and it comes across in his writing. What is even more amazing is how much I retained from reading the text; some texts you can read and come away with very little, but I found that with Myers' book, your attention is so well kept that you retain it even better. The newest edition seems to continue that trend.A must-own for anyone taking AP or college-level psych or who is interested in the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collective of Disciplines under one Roof
Psychology is no longer a discipline with a few sub-disciplines that need to be examined. Now there are branches of cognitive psychology that need to be discussed with more clarity, the growing ideation concealed beneath the umbrella term "positive psychology" that needs to be introduced sooner and with more zeal, and there are so many other themes that need to be looked out but just don't seem to be "important" to people trying to prime future students. When you look at the 8th edition of Myers Psychology you can see how all of this can be looked addressed by an instructor without overloading students in the process, and you can also see how the author(s) took the time to look deeper than the average creator of books. This doesn't cover the instructor resources, either, which are well worth the time and attention of anyone looking for newer researcher to discuss.
If you are a teacher looking at this, check out the resources and the DVD that comes in the mix because the video library they provide certainly is beyond the mundane norm.

The 8th edition is 18 chapters in length, covering: A Prologue on Psychology, 1 - Thinking Critically, 2 - NeuroScience and Behavior, 3 - Nature Nurture and Human Behavior, 4 - Development through the Lifespan, 5 - Sensation, 6 - Perception, 7 - States of Consciousness, 8 - Learning, 9 - Memory, 10 - Thinking and Language, 11 - Intelligence, 12 - Motivation and Work, 13 - Emotion, 14 - Stress and Health, 15 - Personality, 16 - Psychological Disorders, 17 - Therapy, 18 - Social Psychology, and an Appendix on Careers in Psychology.
In these I liked a few things, including:
(1) The fact that many of these ask a student to "think critically," not just presenting information but allowing the student to interject their opinion on the subject. I thought that was a rewarding thing to see because, above anything else, too many introductory classes leave the student out of the equation.
(2) The fact that some of the chapters treat new ground not covered by most introductory books and do so interestingly. This means that the book gives the students some interesting topics to look at and not just the background of Freud, Erickson, Maslow, and the other well-known names.
(3) The book discusses issues separately that should be separated. Therapy and Psychological Disorders is one of those, and Chapters 5 - 10 are others that also fall in that realm.
(4) The book looks into issues that are not normally covered without delving into some sort of Developmental Psychology, some Cognitive Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and a few other classes. Basically, you have a lot of mini classes cocealed within this one book, allowing the instructor to design their own approach to teaching.

While this may not be the most favored book for students who want a continuum from their high school highs, it is a great book to introduce people to the disciplines of Psychology and allows for a lot of deviation by the teacher. I would certainly recommend it as a primer for Psychology majors, allowing them to see just what the field has to offer. Too often that isn't expressed, with careers in Counseling or Mental Health always taking precedent over Research careers or hose in the Industrial sector.
It really is nice to see something that showcases just how broad the world really is.

5-0 out of 5 stars for 101, it's a 100.
This is a fantastic General Psych, Psych 101, or AP Psych textbook. My experience with it gave me the notion that this might just be the best Gen Psych textbook available.I got a 5 on the AP exam using this book, but more importantly, i learned so much from it, i cannot even begin to explain.I recommend this to students as well as teachers (for their class) because, simply, it just doesn't get much better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Going overboard
I took a general psych course at college this past summer, where we used Wayne Weiten's "Psychology: Themes & Variations". Half-way into the term, health problems conspired to force my withdrawal. Lather, rinse, repeat; new semester, new book (of course) - Myers' 8th edition of "Psychology". This gives me "special" insight into two vastly different approaches to the teaching of the science of psychology. Whereas Weiten's approach was Words, Facts, Reinforcement, Myers' approach seems merely to be Words, Words, Words.

A good example of the differences between the two can be found in their descriptions of psychology's founder, Wilhelm Wundt. With Weiten, Wundt comes off as a figure in abstract. Myers, however, introduces him thus:

"...on a December day in 1879, in a small room on the third floor of a shabby building at Germany's University of Leipzig. There, two young men were helping an austere, middle-aged professor, Wilhelm Wundt, create an experimental apparatus."

What, that's all? What was the barometric pressure? Was it sunny, cloudy, or snowing outside? Was the floor made of tile or wood? And, please, I must know: were either of his grad students having a bad hair day? The history of psychology lies in the balance.

His description of Wundt might seem fascinating, but keep in mind that this book is 772 pages of similarly irrelevant asides. It grows tedious and even hazardous to your learning. Such verbose descriptions of historical figures in psychology serve to distract from the main subject - the science of psychology itself. Furthermore, I am an unreformed outliner. I've found that the best way for me to strengthen my learning and understanding of a subject is to outline the text. But, while Weiten's text seemed specifically designed to make that easy, Myers' approach makes it practically impossible.

Both books are thoroughly up-to-date, and both are amply filled with the staples of modern texts: pictures, charts, diagrams, etc. But Myers lacks what Weiten has in spades: review. Every chapter in Weiten has 4-5 "Concept Checks": brief quizzes reinforcing your understanding of the concepts under consideration. The end of every chapter has a "Practical Learning" section and a "Critical Applications" segment, as well as a thorough, 2 page quiz and review of the chapter. For review, Myers has about 5 questions at the end of the chapter and a list of important terms - and that's it. I think psychology - the subject under study, after all - has pretty much settled the debate over which is the better approach to learning.

I am not totally flaming Myers, however. The man has a clear grasp (and love) of his subject. Some people may even find his approach useful. My own personal experience, however, is to prefer that texts be texts and avoid the distracting verbal diarreah. My astronomy text, for example, took a fairly spartan approach to the subject (by modern standards, anyway). But I found that the text, combined with Timothy Ferris's "Coming of Age in the Milky Way" was a perfect approach to my understanding and retention - far better than if the two had somehow been combined. ... This book is an easy read. I reccomend it for people that are in sales. Very useful information if you're trying to close out that deal. Little tips and tricks in there that are also helpful if you need to get your way out of a jam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Influence
This book is Excelently written. Im no psychology student but I had no problem following along. all the stories and examples are relivant to real life situations. you should buy this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Would Recommend for anyone thinking about Business
This book is a must read for anyone interested or involved in business or marketing. I found it easy to understand, and packed full of real life examples and experiments. This book definitely gave me a new perspective on advertising and the likes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense info to most people
Anyone who has dealt with salespeople will be familiar with the techniques described in this book.Nonetheless, it can be a good refresher to read before going out to make a major purchase, such as a car.The author tells a lot of "real-life" stories that demonstrate the techniques, but they tend to be a bit long-winded and slow to get to the point. Also, just my opinion, but I suspect that some of the stories didn't really happen, as they are just too tidy and neat to be true (that doesn't mean the principles they demonstrate are false).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for marketing departments
This book was recommended to me by a very well respected marketing professional. "If you read one book, this is the one".

All I can say is, wow. It's powerful. A must read.

Book Description
This groundbreaking book explains how to tap into your body's energy not only to change your health, but to change your behaviors and thought patterns as well.

Your body is comprised of energy pathways and energy centers that are in constant motion, a dynamic interplay with other energies and with your cells, organs, immune system, mood, and thoughts. If you can shift these energies, you can influence your physical health, your emotional patterns, and your state of mind.

The Healing Power of Energy Psychology gives simple step-by-step instructions that will help you to:

- overcome fear, guilt, shame, jealousy, or anger
- change unwanted habits and behaviors
- enhance your ability to love, succeed, and enjoy life

The energy approach presented in this book can help bring about significant change in your life. With this strategy, stubborn phobias often fade in minutes; the lifelong effects of an early trauma can frequently be reduced or completely eliminated; uncontrollable anger can rapidly become manageable; even elusive physical problems may respond where other treatments have failed. The Healing Power of Energy Psychology is an amazing tool that puts the ability to effect change directly into your hands, and finally gives you control over your fears, pain, and destructive behaviors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Gave it to All my Friends for Christmas
The title says it all. I found this book at the library several months ago, brought it home and began using EFT on myself. Not long after, I ordered six copies -- one for myself and five for my friends as Christmas gifts.

I used EFT on Sunday to remove a friend's fear of flying. It worked like a charm. I should point out that I am not trained in EFT -- I learned what I need from this book and the book rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Study of Energy Medicine
This is an interesting subject matter. It is a beneficial mode of healing and as stated in this book the "methods can be traced back 5,000 years". I like the fact that their is another tool that can heal which can reduce or even eliminate medication. The author provides information that shows this concept as a tool which complements the science of Psychology.

This book includes a 5 minute daily energy routines that can be combined with other disiplines of excercise. Some of the routines can assist with insomia, ADD, and memory to name a few. IMHO-I would not try any of the information in this book without seeing a professional in this field.I highly recommend this for individuals suffering from PTSD and missing limbs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best yet on EFT
This book is clear, fascinating and contains many examples. I have purchased three copies as gifts and am going back for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet Profound

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine

Book Description
When Elliot Aronson, Timothy Wilson, and Robin Akert started with the first edition of Social Psychology their overriding goal was simple but ambitious: capture the excitement of social psychology in a textbook. Now in its sixth edition, the authors have discovered - through many kind letters and e-mail from professors and students - that they have succeeded in making their book an enjoyable, fascinating story, not just a dry report of facts and figures. In their work they have found that social psychology comes alive for students when they understand the whole context of the field: how theories inspire research, why research is performed as it is, how further research triggers yet new avenues of study. The authors have reached students by conveying their own fascination with the research process in a down-to-earth, meaningful way, yet have done so without sacrificing a firm foundation on which to build the reader's understanding. Here, in its sixth edition, the authors present a rigorous, scientific approach to social psychology in a manner that continues to build on the text's legacy of engaging and fascinating students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great service!
My book came in great condition and there were no hassles or complications. It was my first time ordering through amazon and I found the website easy to navigate and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook and a useful reference.
I needed this book for a class and I usually trade them in or sell them at the end of the semester. I'm going to keep this one and add it to my personal library.

The chapters can be long, but they are all filled with good information and very useful examples. Most of my Professor's lectures were taken directly from the contents of this book. The book also references well and lesser known Psychology work to bring you important information from the field.

I probably could have gotten a good grade without going to class every week and just studying this book. As it is, I'm sure I owe a lot to the A I got in Social Psychology to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars social psychology
I needed this book for school, it was priced way below the cost the schools were asking for. The book arrived prior to the date indicated, which was great. I had the book a week prior to my class starting.I love this site for school books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh, for Social Psych, I guess it is good
This book is way too long for the info it teaches. I took social psych as an elective so that I could have it on my transcript for grad school as suggested by my advisor. However, this book could have been about half as long and gotten the point across. It exhausts every single topic to the max and is basically a waste of time to read the entire thing.
I am a textbook reader for my classes. But, I found myself just reading the terminology and skimming quickly through the rest of this book. I think the authors would do themselves justice to accept that introductory social psychology does not need this much explaining.
I guess I would recommend this book to people who are unfamiliar with introductory psych. But, if you are familiar with psych, get ready for a luke warm ride.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
This is one of the better textbooks that I have been assigned to read. Throughout my introductory 101 Social Psychology class I've read pretty much the whole book. The examples were interesting, and I enjoyed how many of the concepts introduced at the beginning of each chapter correlated with something that had happened not too long ago in the real world. The illustrations facilate a better understanding of the theory or subject matter. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to gain a better understanding of social psychology. ... Read more

This was a great experience. The shipping was fast, and hassle free. Hope to buy this way again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Text
I own several Psychology texts and this is a fine introductory source for abnormal psychology. The illustrations and case histories are quite interesting, and the text is exceedingly easy to read. Very few people will probably find this a compelling read outside of a classroom, but for a textbook, it's a very good one. I'll hold onto my copy - you never know when these things can come in handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology & Video Presentations in Abnormal
A good for the understanding of abnormal psychology. This is highly recommended for the undergraduate study. The book is rather dry but does contain valuable information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and clear book
This was one of my favorite classes in college and this book was very supplemental to my professor's lectures. The text was very clear and there were really good examples to help get the point across. It was nice because it was very concise and to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry to give it up
If I didn't need the money so badly, I'd keep this textbook. It's the first time I haven't been dying to get rid of a textbook.Make no mistake. This book is intelligent, a great read, and the layout is not overdone (unlike some books where your eye doesn't know where to look first). For me, it is the perfect model for a psychology text--reading never felt like an assignment or chore. It really was something I looked forward to. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best (for clinical, at least)
When I first applied to graduate school, I bought both this book and the Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. To my dismay, this book didn't have any information that the Insider's Guide didn't have--plus, the Insider's Guide gave me a much better picture of what the faculty were working on than this book did.For other branches of psychology, this might be worthwhile; but for clinical-bound people, I'd recommend relying on the Insider's Guide and the programs' websites.Good luck applying!

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, if you can find it...
I purchased this book to find out which, if any, universities have online PhD programs. This book did not enlighten me.A few easy-reference charts would have made it much more searchable. It would have been great to look at a chart showing at a glance which schools have developmental psychology programs, for instance. If you already know what school you want to attend, the book has a lot of information, including facts such as how many students have dropped out of each program. But don't use this book for your starting point unless you enjoy reading page after page of 6-point font.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much
This book has too much information if you are interested in a clinical Ph.D. It lists all psychology Ph.D. programs as well as master's programs.I suggest Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 2006/2007 Edition (Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical Psychology).

4-0 out of 5 stars a great help
I have found the book to be helpful in narrowing my search for Grad schools. However some issues...

It seems that it would be beneficial to have two separate sections: one for PhD programs and one for Master's only programs.I have to search through page by page to find appropriate schools based on what degree they offer.

Also, the index of the book by specialization is incomplete. It is one of the reasons I bought the book and I was greatly dissapointed. Again, I have spent hours going through the book to look at what schools offer my specialization. They do offer a website to remedy this though.

However, despite the issues, it has been a great help to me and I would definitely recommend it.It does take a long time to look through and it is very time consuming, but the information it contains makes the time worth it. ... Read more

Balancing biological, psychological, social and cultural approaches, ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY successfully blends sophisticated research (including new prevention coverage) with the most widely recognized method of discussing psychopathology. Going beyond simply describing different schools of thought on psychological disorders, the authors explore the interactions of the various forces that contribute to psychopathology. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, even when one's required to buy it
I had to buy this book for one of my university's special education credential classes, but the book's a definite keeper.I find that I learned more about what I need to know to do my job from this one textbook than from all my other textbooks combined. At least that's what it seems like most days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference On Current Teaching Challenges
This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.

The other text book for the class was "Introduction to the Foundations of American Education" by James A. Johnson, et al. That book was not as good by comparison; it was much too preachy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Psych.
This is a good book but there are later editions that are used in the class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psychology Textbook Review
This is a decent psychology text book. The information is presented clearly. The chapter starts with a quick story about the information, then info is presented clearly, then a review, then study guide and practice test.Overall an excellent book.

The only problem is there are a series of practice test included in the back of the book and they would be very very helpful, but the answers are sold in a workbook that must be purchased separately.

BUT the book was in great condition and I would purchase from the same vendor again!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Introduction
I own several Psychology texts and this one is a useful introduction to the subject. The chapters are well organized and carefully laid out, and the information is presented in an easily absorbed format. Few people will probably find this a gripping read outside of the university, but for a textbook, it's a fine introduction to a difficult study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychology at its finest
This is an excellent source of information for an intro into Psychology. Text is very informative, with most of it coming from the author's personal experiences. Drs. Don and Sandra Hockenbury keep you interested throughout the text with expert writing. Recommened text for beginning Psychology students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference to hold onto
Anyone who is concidering a future in Psychology must pick up a copy of this book. As many books are there for General Psychology this one has got to be one the best written and descriptive books I have ever read. The chapters are carefully broken up into consecutive topics that start with the history and basic terms of Psychology and lead you to client-based pscyhoanaylsis information.

This is must have for all Psychology majors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
This is the best textbook I've ever used.It is interesting and engaging. The content is excellent, but the charts, photos, quotes, cartoons, etc. make studying even more enjoyable. If you want to learn the basics of pyschology, but this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Intro-Psych Book Ever?
I finished reading this book about a month ago. I loved it. It covers many aspects of human behavior, albeit much of it rather superficially- but that's to be expected from an introductory Psych text, where a LOT of ground is covered in ~700 pages! Dr. Myers's writing style is very engaging, and the book is a joy to read. Practically every sentence in the book is backed up by at least one scientific study (the References section is downright intimidating... 97 pages!). The book is full of illuminating graphs & illustrations, quotes, captions, even relevant and humorous comic strips. Each section concludes with a "Review and Reflect" section that briefly summarizes the material and tests your understanding (answers are in the back).

I began reading this book in my spare time for my own enjoyment, and to sort of brush up on the introductory material (I'm a Psych major in school). During that time, I transferred schools and was told I would have to retake Intro-Psych because it didn't transfer credit. I sped up my reading so that I finished the book literally 2 nights before the semester started. So far, the class has been a breeze, and looks like it will continue to be. I am more than prepared - I feel like I'm almost as qualified to teach the class as the grad student that they have doing it. Thanks, Dr. Myers, for writing such a great introductory text on Psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still reading it...10 years out of college
I absolutely love this book. I'm one of those dorks who keeps her college textbooks (some, not all.) This is the one I have turned to the most of all of them, and always with reward.

Most of the reviews here cover everything well, but I want to add one comment. One of my favorite things about this book is a minor one: there are quotes by famous people in the margins, every few pages, that are really humorous and/or insightful. I look forward to coming across of those quotes while I read.

The book reads more like a feature article in a magazine rather than a textbook. I guess that's why it's the only textbook I have that I enjoy reading from.

My comments are based on the 5th edition, which was current during my college freshman year in 1997, so I'm sure the 8th edition has improved greatly. Thanks to the publishers for continuing to publish a quality book.I hope more colleges adopt this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well I got a n "A" in the class, need I say more?
It is long and gruelling reading but what else would one expect from a textbook on psychology??? Learned a lot though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Beautifully Written
This book is beautifully written making it an enjoyable read.David Myers does a superlative job of expressing Psychology in a way that's not only intriguing, but also equally detailed and engaging.I read every page of this book for my introduction to Psychology class, and it was immensely helpful not only for psychology but also a myriad of other subjects.

The online curriculum and tests that Myers provides were also extremely helpful for class. This has to be the best structured textbook I have ever read.Kudos and many thanks for the author. ... Read more

Book Description
Dr. James W. Kalat's BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY is the best selling text in the market because of its extremely high level of scholarship, clear and occasionally humorous writing style, and precise examples integrated throughout the text. Throughout all nine editions, the goal has been to make biological psychology accessible to psychology students, not just to biology majors and pre-meds. The goal has also been to convey the excitement of the search for biological explanations of behavior. Kalat argues that biological psychology is "the most interesting topic in the world," and this text convinces many students. Try-it-yourself activities in the book and on-line help illustrate phenomena and procedures described in the text. Accuracy, currency and a clear presentation style have always been the trademark signature of this text and this Ninth Edition has taken these qualities to the next level. An extremely skilled teacher, Dr. Kalat has written a text that not only speaks to today's students but to their professors as well. 3-0 out of 5 stars BioPsychReview
The book overall is good. However, sometimes it is hard to understand what the author is trying to convey---it is as if the book is not written for the lay person--but a medical student. I bought the book for a phyisiological psychology class. I have to read over some parts of the chapters for better clarification. I do like the fact that the book came with a CD-Rom and that the book has a companion website.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing, insightful, fun textbook
one of the best textbooks i've read in a while. perfect for introduction to neuroscience courses. The book has many illustrations and helpful comparisons, such as comparing the action potential to a toilet! really good textbook!

3-0 out of 5 stars good, but not great
This was the textbook for a Neuroscience course I took. The layout is quite nice and makes for a good reference book if you haven't anything else. It is written very well and has great illustrations. However, overall I was disappointed that I didn't learn more from the book. I felt it just did not go deep enough into the various topics and many new research findings are not presented. This book was more of an introduction to the area. Having already taken an introductory course, I was not impressed. That being said, if you have not taken an introductory course maybe this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ectremely Interesting But Not Boringly Technical
Extremely interesting for both undergraduate and graduate readers. Great online help and internet references. Kalat remains true to his history of clear and accurate presentation. (Strongly Recommended)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and well written
I'm a senior at BYU and I found this text extremely well written. It is filled with interesting examples and cartoons that explain the concepts very well.I also really liked the layout of the pages of the book (the text is in the middle and the outer edges contained the important concepts and definitions). This is one of the few textbooks I've ever read that I enjoyed reading. It's GREAT!!!
