Product Description

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's famous investigations of "optimal experience" have revealed that what makes an experience genuinely satisfying is a state of consciousness called flow. During flow, people typically experience deep enjoyment, creativity, and a total involvement with life. In this new edition of his groundbreaking classic work, Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates the ways this positive state can be controlled, not just left to chance. Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience teaches how, by ordering the information that enters our consciousness, we can discover true happiness and greatly improve the quality of our lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shallow Pop Psychology
I must admit, I didn't get very far in this book before throwing it down.As a trained psychologist, and a life-long meditator in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition (Karma Kagyu), I thought this would be a perfect book for me.However, it turns out that the author has just elaborates an idea he has and bases it on many vague connections, but nothing substantial. The sheer number of factual errors, generalizations and glossing over details in the first couple of chapters had me shaking my head constantly. Look, there is no reason to involve the history of the universe and all of mankind in a book about cognitive styles. Why are we bringing systems theory into this? He talks about various religious traditions, philosophies, social science and hard scientific disciplines as if he did more than read a wikipedia page about them (like any other new age book). He confuses mindfulness with concentration. I could go on and on.

This book is a mishmash of common pop-psychology ideas: be mindful, be confident, accept your condition, set goals, savor the sensual, find meaning in life. I had similar ideas when I was in college, before I realized through serious investigations, how banal and shallow they were.If only I had written a book at that time, referenced dozens of philosophical and scientific disciplines to project the idea that I'm intelligent (without fact checking them) and then sold it to hundreds of thousands of saps like this author did.

4-0 out of 5 stars a little blinkered and prejudicial, but good read for the westernised modern world
dr. unpronouceable almost lost me with his ignorance and prejudice when he said, "Traditionally, the problem of exsitence has been most directly confronted through religion, and an increasing number of the disillusioned are turning back to it, choosing either one of the standard creeds or a more esoteric Eastern variety."

if he had ever cared to read beyond and before kierkegaard, nietzsche or even plato and socrates, let his worshipping mind wonder beyond the abrahamic personality cults of moses, jesus and mohammed, and let himself hop on a flight beyond the arabian sea, he would have known that in the orient (and that includes the forgotten fount of india) it is not religions governed by dictats that rule the roost, but ways of life backed by philosohpies. thus hinduism, which is a nomenclature of the west, is actually indian philosophy, which has various strains but some very very profound and robust philosophical and some spiritual core.

so no wonder that throughout the entire first chapter, where he makes some really compelling points, i kept on asking myself "what is the new thing has this guy says he has discovered?" because all what he propounds and more, are already in the texts of indian philosophy, wrongly called by the western academic as hindu or buddhist scriptures.

having said that, what dr. m_______ actually has done is nothing but the age old practice of quest for happiness, and having seen some light, put it out for the world to see. kudos to you dr. m____! i salute you for your journey because as you found out, it's only the journey that matters, not the end.

now, i hope you realise that because you made the journey within the modern setting of an academic portal, it does not go on to become the only definitive and therefore superior one to the ones made before. if your "flow" is followed by millions for next thousand years and is cluttered with anthropological debris and cultural trash, you will also be worshiped as a prophet and "flow" will go on to become another religion to be duly debunked by others at a later date.

you get the drift, i presume.

but a book surely worth a read and ponder as it gives us a contemporary tool for the quintessential quest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
It's interesting that the author (Csikzentmihalyi) forewarns the reader that he or she will need full concentration on the material in Flow to grasp it completely. I found this to be entirely true. At times, I would start drifting off, since certain sections are understandably less interesting than others, but afterward, I would find that I needed to reread that part to comprehend the information in a subsequent portion of the chapter. This book is a great read, and I actively seek to find/gain optimal experiences in my day-to-day life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating & Frustrating
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi originally wrote "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" in 1990. It's an interesting read, both fascinating and frustrating at the same time. But the main idea, the idea of flow experience, is a powerful one and should be considered during product design.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone interested in using Positive Psychology in Coaching
This is an excellent book for anyone who is a coach and uses Positive Psychology in their work with clients or would like to begin.

Robert's writing is very succinct and easy to read. He gets to the point without making the topic too big and scary, but easy to implement. He writes in a manner that is very easy to digest and have fun at the same time.

The book is set up in a format that is easy to follow so you can find what you are looking for with ease.

Whether you are a seasoned coach or just beginning this book is one you must have on your shelve. You will find yourself going back to it over and over.

Great Job Robert!

4-0 out of 5 stars Practicing Positive Psychology Coaching
Mr Diener has produced a beautiful, coaches dream workbook here. He has shared his vast experience in coaching and positive psychology to produce a workbook that really 'works'.Since buying his book I take it everywhere, having now read it twice through. His insight and wisdom are evident in the multitude of coaching interventions that he suggests, it is quite clear that his book is a step ahead than the rest, he is pushing boundaries here and considering thought not yet delved into deeply.A highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to build themselves or participating in the transformation of others.

5-0 out of 5 stars swiss knife of positive psychology coaching
This book is the swiss knife for anyone interested in applying the science of positive psychology in coaching. Biswas-Diener's book is action packed with research driven coaching techniques, great assessment tools, cautionary tails, and it makes for a great reference. And if I was missing anything in my recent studies of positive psychology coaching then it was this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars perhaps the best book on science and coaching out there...
yes, I am biased but you won't find me writing reviews for every person who is my colleague and friend in the field of psychology. I promote what I am comfortable standing behind (and what I actually read and enjoy). Biswas-Diener'sfirst book on the topic was an overview of the science of positive psychology. This follow-up emphasizes practical applications that can be used in coaching, therapy, consulting, and education. The chapters include unfamiliar territory. In sections on strengths, positivity, and hope (topics we are used to seeing), Robert provides new insights such as a killer overview of the relationship of strengths and weaknesses, as well as specific practical ideas that you can adopt instantaneously. Unusual topics include positive diagnosis, in which Robert presents brand new ideas on multi-axial diagnosis in the context of appreciating positive situations and personal attributes. There is also a chapter on positive assessments reprinted in full--ranging from meaning in life to curiosity, along with specific suggestions for how to use these, including open-ended questions that can be used to debrief clients. One of the best features of this book, and one of the reasons I collaborate with him so often, is that the guy simply knows how to write (unlike the vast majority of scientists or coaches). He veers away from an academic tone (jargon, abstract and nebulous concepts) and the book is filled with playful and emotionally provocative personal anecdotes--choosing sports teams in grade school, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, etc. Having seen him speak, he is the master of storytelling. I highly recommend this book. If you don't like it, its you not the book. seriously.

Author of Curious?: Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful for Coaches and helping professionals
This book fills a need in the coaching world because too many practitioners who love the science of flourishing and Positive Psychology don't have any idea how to use it with clients. This book takes care of that problem by giving readers a solid background in why Positive Psychology can enhance coaching, and exactly how and why to perform a "positive diagnosis," how "hope theory" is integral to effective coaching, and even how to prepare yourself for a coaching session and certification. This book is a must-have book for a coach's library, and will be well-thumbed by anyone who is serious about doing excellent Positive Psychology Coaching. ... Product Description

This edition continues to have in-depth, practical coverage with a focus on the intentional teacher by presenting up-to-the-minute research that a reflective, intentional teacher can apply. The eighth edition of this popular text from renowned educational psychologist Robert Slavin translates theory into practices that teachers can use in their classrooms with a further inquiry into the concept of intentionality. An “intentional teacher,” according to Slavin, is one who constantly reflects on his or her practice and makes instructional decisions based on a clear conception of how these practices affect students. To help readers become “intentional teachers,” the author offers a set of questions to guide them and models best practices through classroom examples. Firmly rooted in research, up-to-date theory, and classroom-tested applications, Educational Psychology prepares teachers as no other text does. It teaches them to think about how students develop and learn, to make decisions before and during instruction, and to consider what constitutes evidence that their students are learning and succeeding.

This edition includes a new focus on reflection, new cases, sections on brain research, programs for language minority students, technology, No Child Left Behind, and after school and summer school programs. It contains new critiques of assessment and accountability strategies and a substantially updated treatment of programming for students with special needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrongfully sold in US!!!
My wife experienced a horrible time with this book because it was sold as the Ninth Edition, Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice by Robert Slavin.WRONG! It is a Pearson International Edition and it states this on the back: "This is a special international edition of an established title widely used by colleges and universities throughout the world.Pearson Educational International published this special edition for the benefit of students outside of the United States and Canada. If you purchased this book within the United States or Canada you should be aware that it has been wrongfully imported without the approval of the Publisher or Author."No wonder my wife had such a hard time in her class! Her professor nor anyone could figure out why the wording or some of the information was different! The cover looks the same with the exception of the Pearson International Edition Title. We just passed it off thinking it nothing of it.When we went to resell it, it kept rejecting the ISBN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos from a Chakra Author
I have written a book and teach classes on the chakras and have found the exercises in this book to be very useful in helping my students move through places of stuck energy in the body. The book works with the meridians, but the meridians do go through the chakras. Opening any parts of our energy systems helps to open other parts of it. I bring this book to my classes and recommend it to my students. The exercises in the "Circuits of Joy" chapter are very easy and effective for feeling more connected in the body and releasing emotional pain to feel lighter and more joyful. Great exercises for depression. The descriptions and diagrams are clear and easy to understand. Tapping is also a well-proven technique for releasing emotional trauma and self-limitations. It is used by therapists of various modalities, and is taught in this book. I thought I had lost my copy, and ordered a second one. I found the first one and gave the new one to my daughter, who is a counselor. She also likes it very much. This, and "Energy Medicine" by Donna Eden, are two books I would not be without...Marcia Phillips, author of "Seven Portals To Your Soul: An Accessible Guide for Mending Your Life".

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of science, lots of snake oil
Question:Where are the results of the peer-reviewed, randomized, controlled, double-blind studies?

Answer:There aren't any!!

This book is the equivalent of getting the cart before the horse. If it's so effective, then let's have the scientific evidence that shows its efficacy. Most books written by psychologists are written on the basis of the result of years of scientific research that use accepted research methods. This book is written on the "promise" of studies that might be done "someday" and nothing but excuses for why there are yet to be any proper studies.Sorry, but I don't have time or money to waste on "promises" as there are many, many promises that never come to fruition. At this point, this promise isn't science. It's snake oil.The funniest part is a pilot study would be sooooo simple to conduct, which would then either make way for more research or lay the matter to rest, if only there were a scientist in the room!

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Healing - EFT
This is one of the very best books on Energy Healing I have come across. A fully detailed method of healing emotional turmoil by using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)is described in the first half of the book. Wonderful energy exercizes complete this wonderful book on healing self. Outstanding energy healing for self. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars newest discovery since BF Skinner
This is a real breakthrough in treatment for emotional issues. I like the
science that backs this up and the fact that an engineer created this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Index
I returned this book unread because there's no Index. How do the authors think you are going to look anything up in this book after you've read it? Apparently, they think you won't want to look anything up.If the information contained is of so little value, why read it in the first place?I wish Amazon included information about an Index or lack thereof in the spec's. ... Product Description
Career Paths in Psychology is a must-have resource for students contemplating a career in psychology, for psychologists considering switching between areas of psychology, and for professionals thinking of switching to psychology from another field. In this comprehensive anthology, authors selected for their distinction in their chosen careers offer their professional--and personal--perspectives on 19 different graduate-level careers in psychology. Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology, and readers will find thoughtful discussions, leavened with tips and insights gained from personal experience, on the full range, including (to name only a few) academia, clinical psychology, health and school psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and government service. Each chapter discusses the nature of the career, its advantages and disadvantages, how to prepare for it, typical activities, ranges of financial compensation, opportunities for employment, and the personal attributes needed for success in the career. "Day in the life" discussions give readers a glimpse into the prosaic realities, challenges, and rewards of each career that the lab or lecture hall rarely provides. Reprinted eight times since the publication of the first edition in 1997, Career Paths in Psychology is recognized as the "go-to" sourcebook for anyone seeking a candid portrait of different careers in this ever-changing field. The second edition has been expanded (discussions of five new careers added) and updated to reflect current trends and changes in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review
The book I ordered was in great condition, just like it had been described and it arrived quickly. I am happy with the purchase and I will definitely come back and buy more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every basic path you can take!
I have been thinking about going back to uni to study psychology and since there are so many fields, I decided to buy this book to see which field would best suit me or be most interesting.
Many people major in psychology these days but this book is definately for those who are looking to obtain a MA/MS or higher, working as 'psychologists'.
I read a review saying how it was not in-depth enough and that it lacked in details but how much of one profession can ever be squeezed into a book, yet alone most of the career paths in psychology.
It covers all the basic areas and environment where a psychologist can work and each chapter is written by a psychologist working in that setting. It definately gives you an idea of what it's basically like to be working in that particular field, highlighting most expectations that you are likely to come across.
It can get a little confusing after reading five different chapters but if you're looking to see which profession in psychology might suit you or like best, then this book is the way to go.

I found this book to be very useful because each chapter describes and discusses a different field of psychology and includes current opportunities and pay ranges. At the end of each chapter first-hand experience is shared by a Psychologist that is currently practicing or formerly practiced in the specific area of psychology being discussed. This book is a valuable resource for students pursuing or interested in pursuing a career in psychology; assisting in clarifying areas of specialty, expectations, and opportunities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GAPS saved my life and my sanity
YES! YES! YES! This book saved my life and my sanity. GAPS explains my life, my parents, my extended family. Within 36 hours of implementing the diet, my mind cleared and I have not experienced depression since then, not one moment depressed. That was 1 and 1/2 years ago. I'm 37 now. I had been a depressive since age four or so. I was diagnosed celiac in 2008, but the standard medical advice was going to kill me, just like it had killed my mother years prior, also diagnosed celiac. I implore you to read this book if you or anyone you love suffers from mental problems, gut problems, auto-immune problems, ear aches, chemical addictions, obesity, diabetes, high metabolism, joint pain, night sweats, night terrors, hot flashes, migraines, sinusitis, dry skin, oily skin, constipation, bad breath, bad b.o., sore muscles, etc., etc., etc., practically everything. It was the carbs all along, the carbs, the carbs. I take no meds now, no vitamins. I see no doctors, no nutritionists. I am freeeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best news for me since 1982
Gut and Psychology Syndrome. This is the science behind Dr. Mark Hyman MD'S The Ultra Mind Solution. Following these principles, under my medical doctor's supervision, I have weened off all psychiatric medications for nearly the past 10 months. I had been under a psychiatrist's care since 1982 and have been on most of the meds used for Bipolar 11 Disorder. Now, I have no depression, no foggy brain, no side effects, a great sex life, no anxiety, and hope to get off disability sometime soon. People need to take control of their own health and use their own will power. After electric shock treatments and acupuncture and years of nonfunctioning it was surprizing to me that our gut actually produces most of the Seretonin used by the brain. I wish I would have found this earlier. My wife and kids are amazed to "have me back." 58 year old professional male.

This is a major indictment against the entire psychiatric community and welcome relief to millions of fellow sufferers who are tired of being guinea pigs under the supervision of their psychiatrists who just prescribe more and more combinations of mind numbing drugs with little hope of ever overcoming their "mental illnesses." This Gut stuff is real. It works. Finally hope for the rest of us.

1-0 out of 5 stars $55? Really?!
I bought a used version of this book, and it is very helpful in getting your health back on track.I was going to order the new version for a friend.
Did someone make a typo or did pigs suddenly sprout wings? When did a paperback ever need to cost $55?How ridiculous!Guess that's a no sale.I will find another used copy for under $10.How sad and greedy to gouge those who need this information to live a normal life!

Product Description
Positive psychology is the scientific study of what goes right in life, from birth to death and at all stops in between. It is a newly-christened approach within psychology that takes seriously the examination of that which makes life most worth living.Everyone's life has peaks and valleys, and positive psychology does not deny the valleys. Its signature premise is more nuanced, but nonetheless important: what is good about life is as genuine as what is bad and, therefore, deserves equal attention from psychologists.Positive psychology as an explicit perspective has existed only since 1998, but enough relevant theory and research now exist to fill a textbook suitable for a semester-long college course.

A Primer in Positive Psychology is thoroughly grounded in scientific research and covers major topics of concern to the field: positive experiences such as pleasure and flow; positive traits such as character strengths, values, and talents; and the social institutions that enable these subjects as well as what recent research might contribute to this knowledge.Every chapter contains exercises that illustrate positive psychology, a glossary, suggestions of articles and books for further reading, and lists of films, websites, and popular songs that embody chapter themes.

A comprehensive overview of positive psychology by one of the acknowledged leaders in the field, this textbook provides students with a thorough introduction to an important area of psychology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, fun and very worthwhile!
During undergrad at Umich, I actually bought this book to read during a winter break when I realized I wouldn't be able to take Chris's course as an elective. A Primer feels less like a textbook, though it's layout, organization and content are far more useful and practical than most anything I've ever read in Psychology.

While A Primer is technically a textbook, it can be read through many lenses and angles and be used as a tool for personal and professional growth. The research is interesting and credible, and shows how Positive Psychology has deep roots under many names. Five stars 100%.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Psychology
An excellent book on a relatively new approach to psychology. Should make for an excellent textbook for studnets of psych.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of a Primer for Positive Psychology
Excellent book if you want to understand the basics of Positive Psychology and all the scientific research that supports the field. Also it includes many practical ideas and exercises for use in any walk of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Read on Positive Psychology
If you're looking for an accessible foundation in positive psychology that is content rich, research-based and practical, then this book is for you.

It's used as a college textbook by the author/professor at U of Michigan who is a pioneer in the field, but it's much more interesting and humorous than the textbooks I've read for my college classes. It doesn't have that typical textbook feeling, but it's richer in ideas than what is on the mass market on happiness.

And there are exercises to try out in your life to improve your happiness
at the end of each chapter. The author is brilliant and articulate. He's won teaching awards at U of M:you feel like you're in his classroom being taught by him without having to pay tuition--and that's positive! I learned about this book on a list of top 10 books on Happiness & Positive Psychology. It's a great book for psychology students, coaches, practicing psychologists and regular folk interested in the evolving and transforming field of positive psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cogent review of Positive Psychology
I confess that I gave up reading "Authentic Happiness" half-way through, so I was not biased toward positive psychology. However, this was a text for a PP coaching class I took, and I liked it a lot -- very clear, straight-forward, easy to understand, full of substantive and interesting research, and even a bit of humor. I found myself looking forward to reading the assignments. My only fuss (which the author says he'll rectify in the next edition) is an inherent testosterone bias, (e.g., a key element of happiness is "winning," expressed in masculine terms rather than the kind of fulfillment that a soccer mom might get from raising great kids). Altogether a good explication of the rationale and value of positive psychology. ... Read more

Product Description
In PSYCHOLOGY: THEMES AND VARIATIONS, BRIEFER VERSION, Wayne Weiten continues his proven combination of a scientifically rigorous text with selective pedagogy that makes learning easy for students. Weiten?s approach is backed by a straightforward writing style, unparalleled in-text visuals and didactic art program, and in-book review to help users prioritize and retain the core concepts. Weiten surveys psychology?s broad range of content with three aims: to illuminate the process of research and its intrinsic relationship to application (themes); to show both the unity and diversity of the subject (variations), and to invite users to the study of psychology by respecting their ability to master its fundamental concepts. Weiten?s themes (including empiricism, theoretical diversity, sociohistorical contexts, multifactorial causation, cultural heritage, heredity and environment, and subjectivity of experience) and variations provide unifying threads across chapters that help users see the connections among different research areas in psychology. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars overpriced textbook
This Text is a slight revision from an older text and not much new added. It is hard to read easily because the authors insert sources into the text making it difficult to follow the flow. The sources should have been footnotes instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to the Personal Library
I love this. I've had some interest in Psychology in general, so when I needed this book for my Social Psych. class, this was well-informed of all the issues and concepts that are presented in analysing society as individuals and groups. It has opened my eyes to see people in a different outlook when people are rude, inconsiderate, or when people come as "weird."

Besides those particular points, it also helps in understanding your own personal actions. You can receive a lot from this book that can benefit yourself and others for the good of your social environment. Highly recommend this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Although it was listed as "used", the book was untouched.Thanks.Saved a lot of money buying through Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic
Factually, this book gives a solid introduction to Psychology. As a textbook, however, there is considerable room for improvement. The chapter summaries at the end of the chapter are basic and short-- it provides a quick summary, but no review questions, practice quizzes, or suggestions for further explanation in different areas of Psychology. Compared to other textbooks I have used that are very similar to this one, this was by far the worst. The companion workbook that goes along with this book is also unimpressive when compared to workbooks for similar textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psych 101
I bought this book because it was a required text for my intro Psychology class. The book is readable, clear and informative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Psychology 10th Edition
The book gives a college introduction to psychology. It is sophisticated but, drags along at times before getting to a point. The chapter placements are not very continuous and topics can better arranged. The examples used to explain concepts are sometimes long and unneeded. So explanations of topics are also unclear such as the "garden path effect" and can confound readers at times. ... Read more
