5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
If students plan to do well in class, this is definitely a got to have study guide for any student taking beginning Psychology.

I got this book very quickly and in great shape!I believe I did a great buy!I definately recommend buying from here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a very interesting text!Chapters are a bit long & boring at times but overall great material. I just wish my professor didnt read the text word for word! Not the books fault! LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars Excuse me, But do you Mind?
When asked to choose a book to use in my Introduction to Psychology class, I was somewhat unsure because there are armadas of books out there. For students, I think someone should take in price as a factor, look at what they are given in the way of student-aid and multimedia, and how good the book really happens to be. I initially chose this book because I knew someone that had used an older version of it and said that it was a good choice and, well, I couldn't be happier.

As far as the cost of the book, it really isn't bad for a new book. It keeps up with newer stuff, not really leaving you behind with outmoded material you really shouldn't learn anyhow. It also adds in newer elements to the study of the subject, allowing a student to feel out the subject without feeling like they've stepped onto the Intro bandwagon. This isn't to say that all the beginner's concepts aren't covered because they are - this is simply to say that the book takes the subjects and runs with them a lot more than most beginner material. Another thing to take into account if you are teaching a class are the number of chapters vs. the filler material. With classes becoming shorter now (many schools now have a 14 week series v. a 16 week one) the material needs to be able to sink in faster.
Happily for the students reading this, the material will do that AND the book will come with A LOT of help to making testing a positive experience.

One nice thing that comes with the book is the Concept Charts, making it east for people to see the ideas "come to life." It is easier to explain how a science goes from an idea to a modern approach by placing it in a nice graph, and the points that are added make it easier still to separate one person from another. The Chart book follows along with the book amazingly, too; I looked into it first off and saw that it took into account everything the Chapters were trying to say.

Running through the book, it covers: Evolution of Psychology, Researching, Biological Biases for Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Variations on Consciousness, Learning, Memory, Language and Thought, Intelligence and Testing, Motivation and Emotion, Development across the Life Span, Personality, Stress and Coping, Disorders, Treatment, and Social behavior. Combine this with the CD, web help, and you've got a full book of concepts.

If your teacher picked this out, MAKE SURE you get the concept charts with your book. It is good, will help you if you are going into any field dealing with psychology, and is a book that is worth keeping instead of recycling.

Book Description
This brief version of Durand and Barlow's best-selling text was created specifically for those professors who were drawn to the authors' standard-setting integrative approach but who wanted a shorter, easier book for their students. In this briefer version, the authors explain abnormal psychology in the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying abnormal psychology. Through this integrative approach, students learn that psychological disorders are rooted in multiple factors: biological, psychological, cultural, social, familial, and even political. Conversational writing style, consistent pedagogy, video clips of real clients (located on the accompanying free Abnormal Psychology Live 2.5 CD-ROM), and real case profiles - 95 percent from the authors' own case files - provide a realistic context for the scientific findings of the book, and ensure that readers never lose sight of the fact that beyond the DSM-IV-TR criteria, the theories, and the research are real people. With this text, students can take advantage of Abnormal PsychologyNow, our web-based, intelligent study system that, by using online diagnostic pre- and post-tests, helps students prioritize their study time by creating personalized study plans that focus only the sections in which they experienced difficulty. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well...
This book is full of interesting information, but I think most of it is information that isn't very useful for regular Education majors. If you're going to be a school counselor or psychologist though, this book would be a great investment for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Amazon to list new edition
This book is required for a class I am taking, but the school states this book is in the 5th ed. as of 2005.I will wait for the updated version. The school is selling it for $118.50.

3-0 out of 5 stars Educational Psychology book review
I purchased this book because it was mandatory for an education class I was taking. It was very helpful and useful in terms of my class but I don't think I would have purchased it on my own.Not to say that the book did not have lots of good information in it, but it depends on what you are interested in learning about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the learning mind....
I found this book to be very informitive in how the mind works and respect to how people learn. I have improved my personal study habits because after reading this book I realized that I was not using the most effective way of keeping things in my long term memory. This book gives a detailed explanation with real life examples of how to approach situations as a teacher or parent who wants to know the inner tickings of the developing learner. If you are more concerned with toddlers though this book only briefly touches on them. This book deals more with school age children. If I were to try and write a review that this book deserves, I would be writing all night. I know that the description of this book is written above and I believe it to be a really good description of the book. I will agree though that this book answers all of the aspects of teaching, learning and the classroom as well as the many theories and approaches to educational psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars would buy from again
came in good time; wonderful condition; thanks a lot; would buy from this seller again

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for soon to be psychologists!
This book is a comprehensive, step-by-step walk through the application process from thinking about going to grad school to accepting and declining offers (and what to do if you don't get in). It has checklists for choosing schools, one for each application you send in, and one to help in getting strong letters of recommendation. I would recommend this text to anyone applying to a graduate program in psych but would also encourage you to pick up supplemental books about writing a personal statement or whatever you'll need more than a chapter to help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
While I'll agree with all the positive statements made in previous reviews, I must say that this didn't seem too different from the first edition, which I checked out from the library last year. I was expecting there to be a bigger difference. But nonetheless, a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I expected
This is what you can expect from American Psychological Association: the autors go straight to the point, and have an excellent writing. Thanks to theirs suggestion, you can consult different bibliography for special cases (for example, for international students). They make the reader revaluate his goals (like: "given this reality, is this what you really want for yourself?) and, of course, they help you prepare an useful detailed year-schedule.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential, easy read.
I recently graduated as an undergraduate and got a job in the business world.Needless to say it is not what I had in mind.I am seriously looking to go back to school as soon as possible but I feel a bit lost and cut off, now that I have graduated and moved away from school.I just picked this book up a couple of days ago and I have already learned so much about how to prepare myself for applying to grad school. There is some very valuable information in this book that you will not likely find elsewhere. It is a great, essential read and you would be hindering yourself if you did not read it. ... Book Description
A market leader for over 30 years, A HISTORY OF MODERN PSYCHOLOGY has been praised for its comprehensive coverage and biographical approach. Focusing on modern psychology, the text's coverage begins with the late 19th century. The authors personalize the history of psychology not only by using biographical information on influential theorists, but also by showing how major events in those theorists' lives have affected the authors' own ideas, approaches, and methods. Substantial updates in this edition include discussions of evolutionary psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and positive psychology. The result is a text that is as timely and relevant today as it was when it was first introduced. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A History of Modern Psychology
This text is a very easy reading. It is both very informative and to the point, one of the best textbooks I've had to read in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Anyone intersted in Psychology should get this book, very informative and if used for a class, it is just what you need.

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this as a text for my History of Modern Psych class
I teach an undergrad course on the history of psychology (Sonoma State), and I've found this book to be clear and readable. My students tend to like it and find the pleasantly informative tone and highlighted information to be useful. This book has gone through several editions as the authors build in updates. They do a fine job of making what is usually very dry material accessible to students. A recent inclusion discusses evolutionary psychology. InfoTrak allows students to look up information online, and the book is filled with useful web sites for further study. Some of the misconceptions about Freud have been corrected (e.g., the false story about Breuer running away from Anna O), although the role of Pierre Janet in the development of a fully dynamic psychology has remained largely unexplored since Ellenberger's work in the seventies.

Two suggestions for future editions: 1. Include more from the therapy side of the psychological house. The book is heavily weighted toward the experimental side: the tradition from Wundt, Titchener, etc. onward, although it does include material about psychoanalysis. Wundt could use some filling out--he did much more than introspect. 2. The Jung section needs reworking. Jung's theories about the collective unconscious have nothing to do with an ancestral inheritance, for example, and people have been calling him a "mystic" for a century despite all his hard empirical work and his being known early on as an experimental psychiatrist (physicians came to Switzerland from all over the world to learn his association test method). His attempts to study of sacred experience come out of a rich tradition that includes William James and Gustav Fechner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of Psychology's Past, Present, and Future
This book was used for one of my classes this past fall. It is very readable, and all of the names that you learn in psych classes actually become people, characters in the development of this ever-broadening field. I thought it was a great start to get psychology students more interested in the people who came before them.

4-0 out of 5 stars History source of psychology
We are using this book in our class. I do think it is a great book compared to others I have read. I like that they filter through and supply just facts. If you need to know how psychology came about and who attributed to it, this is an excellent source to read. I can say there are times its hard for me to put down the book, then other areas seem to be hard to grasp. Over all the book is a great reference and started book in the history of psychology ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you Interested
This book does a great job of giving you information that you can relate to or apply to what you see in every day life. So far I've really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for intro. to psychology
It seems that many other books in psychology do not offer information in such a broad and defined view to the wide content that creates Psychology as a science. I would recommend this book to someone instead of the For Dummies or Complete Idiots Guide series. The logic behind many concepts are shown in cartoons, pictures, and presentations. I would say this book, in many aspects, is descriptive.

This book includes the following:

- Diseases and disorders

- Cognitive science (learning, developmental stages, etc.)

- neuroscience/neurophysiology (schizo mind, neural connections)

- Psychophysics, which describe how the human body interprets information through their senses.
(THIS IS NOT IN A LOT OF PSYCHOLOGY BOOKS, VERY NECESSARY TO LEARN)

- Psychobiology and evolutionary genetics

5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
For the beginning psychology student, or for someone who just wants to learn some of the basics, this is a good book.
I used to for a class and it is quite informative.

It teaches many of the psych terms and gives examples of how the ideas apply to real life. It also gets a little into the biological things having to do with psychology, but not real deep.
A few entertaining things are in there as well, like small comic strips to demonstrate their points in a humorous way.

4-0 out of 5 stars a very solid and interesting text
i think this is the most interesting psych text i have read.i got it for a 4 week online class and had to read it cover to cover in less than a month.it was easy to read and has review sections within the chapter to make sure you are getting the information, and the author has a lovely sense of humor.I would reccommend this book very highly.the research is current and sound and he gives many perspectives on the same issues.there are some issues i had with how he organizes information, because it can be a bit confusing how he goes from general to specific then changes topics completely, but how else are you going to cover everything? Love the format, get the study guide too if you can.

"Current trends in the field are well reflected with the sections on genetics, neuroscience, and cognitive science." - Jack Nitschke,University of Wisconsin

"I was particularly impressed by the skill with which the authors were able to discuss complex material in a clear fashion." - Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, Ohio State University

I have not received my book yet.It has almost been a month. I have e-mailed the seller several times but she always seems to have a reason why I haven't recieved it.I e-mailed her 2 days ago with a request to refund my money but she said that it should have been shipped by now, that it was at her parents house. At this point, I am very dissatisfied with this particular service.I must also add that I ordered app. 10 books via your service and had no problems at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Psychology
The book has interesting visuals, set-up for taking notes, and covers a wide range of what is contained in the history and present of the study of the mind in relation to the body.
I think it will definitely help me in my entry-level Psychology course.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best psych text
The first day of class my professor felt free to note that the text for her class was boring, in the opinion of some of her students. After reading it myself, I had to disagree. The text is one of the better ones I've read.I took AP Psych in high school and the text used there was boring. This textbook, however, presents Psychology in an interesting light. The first chapter, on the founders of Psychology is written so that you can actually make sense of it.Most cases studies of the guys like Freud, Wundt and the like proved to be boring for me, but not in this text. The authors also go out of thier way to make sure that you understand what you are reading through the questions that appear in the margins of the text. The book also features comics and interesting pictures relating to the subject matter. This book is not your typical "college text."I also recommend the study guide. It has self tests that you can use to study for the final.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
I thought this text was great--it provides information in a very clear and well-explained manner for the student who has never taken a psychology course before.Gray proves he has a sense of humor as well, injecting funny lines every now and then.It provides a lot of pertinent information in an interesting manner, and covers everything from theories on development and society to cognition and neuroscience. After finishing my intro psych class I even found myself wishing I could still use the text for my other classes (in fact I still refer to it every now and then).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Psychology Textbook
As an Intro Psych instructor, I reviewed dozens of psychology texts.Gray's "Psychology" is clearly the best.

First, because it is written by a single author, it maintains a consistent style and viewpoint throughout--that is, the application of evolutionary biology and cognitivescience to the study of the mind and behavior.Consequently, he does notshy away from putting forward strong arguments where they are needed.Onthis, see especially hissuperb discussion of the fall of behaviorism andthe rise of cognitivism.

Second, the author has a powerful command ofseveral lines of important research, and he uses this to "smartenup" the text to make it *more* understandable. As an example, seeparticularly his discussions ofthe heritability of intelligence.

Third,the text is beautifully organized.

The text does, however, suffer fromtwo small weaknesses:the discussion of self-esteem owes too much toJames, with James' errors especially, and the discussion of mental healthand happiness needlessly bore little imprint from the chapters oncognition.

Still, Gray produced a superlative volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
If truth be told, I do not even like psychology, and feelcontemt of some sort for it.I took it this semester to fulfill my humanityrequirement.Nevertheless, I cannot deny that this book is wonderfullywritten, and it was a true pleasure reading it !Peter Gray is obviouslyvery fond of psychology, as well as of teaching it.It was much fun readinga book written so sensitively and with so much enthusiasm. I know manyuniversities assign this book and am therefore surprised only one personreviewed it so far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's guide
Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 2008/2009 Edition is an updated edition of the practical guide for those who are considering pursuing graduate level degrees in clinical or counseling psychology. The book has current data on more than 300 accredited programs in the United States and Canada. At 387 pages, it is rather short as compared to the Graduate Study in Psychology by the American Psychological Association. I found the book to be informative, and the worksheets and timeline in the appendixes are helpful.

If you're choosing between Insider's Guide and Graduate Study in Psychology, the Graduate Study in Psychology is the better book. Both books are handy and having both at hand is a plus. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for last-minute studying
This book was ideal for last-minue studying for the GRE psych exam. It provides a solid review and was basically a bullet-point list of almost everything you need. As a review, great but if you need more in-depth explanations you will need to find more information elsewhere. I used this in conjunction with Kaplan's book and did quite well on the exam. Definitely buy this if you are going to take the psych gre!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Book
This book was ideal for studying for the GRE psych exam. It provides a great review and gives vital information. I would reccomend it to anyone taking the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, but should be used in conjunction with the Kaplan or another study aid
This book is great in that it consolidates an overwhelming amount of information into concise paragraphs and chapters. It's very readable, and easy to get to the next "chapter" so you can bite off small bits at a time. However, it is lacking in depth explanation on most subjects.I worked my way through the Kaplan, then through Cracking, and then took the practice test from ETS.This took me about 6 weeks, and I did really well.I know that the books are kind of expensive, but remember that if you buy This book and the Kaplan, some of the cost will be absorbed by the free shipping.I really liked Cracking--it helped clarify (or summarize) the concepts I was a little "iffy" on, and was a great way to see if I had really absorbed anything from all the other studying I'd been doing.Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent review
This prep book gave a decent review of the topic areas that appearon the psychology GRE, despite how brief it is.I used this in conjunction with Kaplan's book and did quite well.Definitely buy this if you are going to take the psych gre!

Book Description
This unique book closes the gap between psychology books and the research that made them possible. Its journey through the “headline history” of psychology presents 40 of the most famous studies in the history of the science, and subsequent follow-up studies that expanded their findings and relevance. Readers are granted a valuable insider's look at the studies that continue to be cited most frequently, stirred up the most controversy when they were published, sparked the most subsequent related research, opened new fields of psychological exploration, and changed most dramatically our knowledge of human behavior. For individuals with an interest in an introduction to psychology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for any psychology student (or fan!)
This book does an excellent job of summarizing the most important contributions of psychological research in its relatively young history. As a psychology professor, I plan to use this book in the classroom -- many of my colleagues already do. It gives students a great history lesson and also familiarizes them with past and current theories in the field of psychology. We especially love how the author includes more recent studies that have resulted from the original 40 studies -- current directions, so to speak. Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars great!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forty Studies that Changed Psychology: Explorations into the History of Psychological Research

5-0 out of 5 stars textbooks can be good
I really wasn't looking forward to yet another psychology text, but this one is actually enjoyable. The author has managed to pare down each study to the essentials and doesn't waste a ton of space trying to entertain the reader. I would recommend it for anyone interested in how the mind works, and the information that has made our understanding greater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You
I found this book to be very useful because each chapter describes and discusses a different field of psychology and includes current opportunities and pay ranges. At the end of each chapter first-hand experience is shared by a Psychologist that is currently practicing or formerly practiced in the specific area of psychology being discussed. This book is a valuable resource for students pursuing or interested in pursuing a career in psychology; assisting in clarifying areas of specialty, expectations, and opportunities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast service
I was very happy with this book the sender sent this book within a day of notice and it was very well taaken care of.

3-0 out of 5 stars an OK textbook
It's an OK text book. I know I would never buy a book like this for my own sake. However, since it's a PsyD program assigned textbook, I have to go through it. Get bored several times during the reading. It's alright informative; I did learn a little information after reading it. So i think it's alright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for psych majors!
I definitely recommend this book for any undergraduate who is a psychology major and is planning a career in psychology. The authors of each article cover their fields rather extensively, outlining a day in the life, average/median salaries, the responsibilities and educational tracks to their jobs, and more information on related careers in the field. It has many traditional psychology careers (academia, counseling, clinical in a hospital) as well as non-traditional "different" subfields (community, health psych, i/o psych, government research).

However, I only recommend it if you already have an idea that you want to go into the field of psychology but are having trouble deciding on a subfield. The book is really for people who already have a sort of basis in psych and know that they are interested, but need more information. If you still think that all a psychologist does is "couch work," it's DEFINITELY for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview for Exploration
I read this book from the standpoint of a working person interested in getting into psychology. It gives a good overview of the different branches of psychology, and talks about days in the lives of psychologists, educational requirements, salaries, etc. Most of the jobs discussed require a PhD, so for me these jobs would be long term goals, but even so - reading this book was a good way to think about what branches of psychology appeal to me.
