Product Description

Edited by two leading scholars in the field, Leisure Studies is a new title in the Routledge Major Works series, Critical Concepts in the Social Sciences. It is a four-volume collection of canonical and cutting-edge research in Leisure Studies.

The origin of Leisure Studies is comparatively recent. The subject is largely a postwar development which began to unfold in the 1960s, initially in the USA and Europe. The subject area has continued to evolve internationally from a number of other disciplines and cognate areas—such as outdoor recreation, geography, history, economics, and sociology—and there has been a corresponding growth in Leisure Studies scholarship. Leisure Studies is now a vibrant and dynamic field of study and research, and the sheer scale of the growth in its output makes this collection especially timely. A wide range of social science journals have published leisure-related material and this Major Work makes available foundational pieces of scholarship—as well as cutting-edge research—from these disparate, and sometimes less accessible sources, as well as from the leading UK, European, and North American leisure journals, and from other publications, some of which are no longer in print.

As well as bringing together the key studies and journal articles that have shaped leisure thought, the collection is to be welcomed as the first mapping of an area that to date has lacked an interdisciplinary synthesis. The thematic organization of the collection, together with the editors’ introductions and their commentaries on the collected texts, makes sense of the wide range of approaches, theories, and concepts that have informed Leisure Studies, and reviews the history of the subject and the rise of its identity and research agenda. It is an essential collection destined to be valued as a vital research resource by all scholars and students of the subject.

A wide range of tourism environments is covered, from mass market destinations to islands where there is currently very little tourism. 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Rated by Business Students
Fundamentals of Leisure Business Success has recently been added as required reading at the Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management in Warsaw, Poland (rated as the number one business school in Poland - for 6 years running - by Newsweek magazine). The students absolutely love its easy to read style as well as the international aspect of its content (the case study deals with a company that employs workers from over 72 countries).
All in all, FLBS has proven to be a reader-approved business book that dispenses with the grind of academic jargon and presents the study of business from a hands-on practitioner's viewpoint.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Find
At last, a truthful, real-life management book that focuses on the lucrative recreation and leisure profession. This is a well written and fascinating read that marries practitioner oriented reality with academic theory. The results are most interesting. The text focuses on a leisure business turn-around that succeeded under the most difficult of circumstances. While becoming completely immersed in the story, the reader suddenly finds that the basics of modern business management have been grasped.Well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good read for managers and students doing projects.
This book is a fascinating read, relating the story of a manager thrust into a run-down recreation club and transforming it into an effective organisation in two years. The location is Saudi Arabia, with significantreligious constraints on western management and the substantially westernhospital staff for whom the club is run. The author studied for his MBAafter this experience and is therefore able to draw out the relationshipsbetween the management problems faced and the principles expounded in themanagement literature. It is therefore an interesting case-study andrecommended reading for students struggling to link theory with practice. ... Read more
