5-0 out of 5 stars Woman's Study Bible-An Excellent Choice
I actually bought the paperback version of this book and I couldn't be more pleased with it.I love the study materials it includes, such as pages on the flowers and herbs of the bible. The footnotes on the bible verses are so easy to understand.I recommend buying the hardcover version because my paperback is already showing a lot of wear, and I've only had it about 3 weeks. It really focuses on the relationship between women and God.

Product Description

The Phenomenology of Religious Life presents the text of Heidegger's important 1920--21 lectures on religion. The volume consists of the famous lecture course Introduction to the Phenomenology of Religion, a course on Augustine and Neoplatonism, and notes for a course on The Philosophical Foundations of Medieval Mysticism that was never delivered. Heidegger's engagements with Aristotle, St. Paul, Augustine, and Luther give readers a sense of what phenomenology would come to mean in the mature expression of his thought. Heidegger reveals an impressive display of theological knowledge, protecting Christian life experience from Greek philosophy and defending Paul against Nietzsche.

We have a 9 yr. old grandson who is exceeding curious about what the end of the world will entail and what it will be like afterward.I tried reading & abbreviating parts of Revelations for him, but that was not satisfactory.I then went online to find appropriate books for his age level. This and the Chapter 1-7 book by the same authors was Way more than he wanted/needed.We would really like to find a better age-appropriate source.Anyone have suggestions?

Product Description
Rethinking Islamic Studies upends scholarly roadblocks in post-Orientalist discourse within contemporary Islamic studies and carves fresh inroads toward a robust new understanding of the discipline, one that includes religious studies and other politically infused fields of inquiry.

Editors Carl W. Ernst and Richard C. Martin, along with a distinguished group of scholars, map the trajectory of the study of Islam and offer innovative approaches to the theoretical and methodological frameworks that have traditionally dominated the field. In the volume's first section, the contributors reexamine the underlying notions of modernity in the East and West and allow for the possibility of multiple and incongruent modernities. This opens a discussion of fundamentalism as a manifestation of the tensions of modernity on Muslim cultures. The second section addresses the volatile character of Islamic religious identity as expressed in religious and political movements at national and local levels. In the third section, contributors focus on Muslim communities in Asia and examine the formation of religious models and concepts as they appear in this region. This study concludes with an afterword by accomplished Islamic studies scholar Bruce B. Lawrence reflecting on the evolution of this post-Orientalist approach to Islam and placing the volume within existing and emerging scholarship.

Product Description

It is often alleged that religion is a major cause of war and dissent. History is littered with the wreckage of religious conflict, from the crusades onwards, and it is frequently maintained that it is religion which is the tinderbox that ignites so many regional disputes - from Bosnia's ethnic cleansing to the ongoing conflict in Iraq. If religion is on trial, the evidence against it so often seems damning. But is the picture really as grim as has been painted? Very little is heard in defence of religion and few attempts have been made to put the other side of the case. The essays in this volume are among the first systematically to explore the role of religion as a force for peace, both historically and in the contemporary world. They focus on the efforts that have been made by individuals, communities and religious groups to secure conflict-resolution and replace hostility with tolerance and mutual respect. Specific topics explored include: nationalism and religious conflict; revolution and religious wars; the impact of secularisation; ethnicity and religion; conflict over holy places; and making and keeping the peace.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lyndon Cook Interpretations
Overall the book is informative but with speculative views of the authors. Daniel Peterson Phd. BYU bears out that the author promotes views to his perspective with selective accounts that collaborate these facts. Lydon W Cook should have been more unbiased and approach the material as presented and not seen through his interpretations only. Example such as ; :"According to an account of a sermon"....and "the Prophet is reported to have said"....
are used as "doctrine" and accepted as "Beliefs" when in fact there is no warrant or justification for such as an account other than heresay or speculative. In the Book "The Holy Ghost" Page 9 by Joseph Fielding McConkie & Robert Millet the quotes from Lyndon Cook are addressed as though received as doctrine and any information received otherwise would be "unproductive". Careful consideration by Scholars and readers alike should be aware of such material albeit noteworthy, that should be taken in the context of its original format and application rather than by absolute truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight from the Horse's Mouth
This book, which is a collection of the Prophet Joseph's teachings in Nauvoo, was excellent. There are some members of the LDS church that think that Talmage's "Jesus the Christ" is possibly the best book other than canonized Scripture. And although I agree that "Jesus the Christ" is a very insightful and good book, I would say that this book is my personal favorite. In it, the reader is immersed in some of the Prophet's most insightful, and controversial, teachings. And because it is essentially either one of Joseph's scribes or Joseph himself writing, you know that you are getting a reliable source. So I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to further his or her knowledge of the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith in Nauvoo. It certainly has helped me discover the truth and has given me knew insights on a great Prophet of God! ... Read more

Product Description
Since the terrorist attacks on 9/11, the political roles of religious institutions and groups have captured international attention. This book examines how religious institutions and organizations in various Asian countries are influencing democratic development and the shaping of government policies. "Religious Organizations and Democratization" covers Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan. The chapters specifically address the engagement of Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, and other religious organizations in the advancement and/or hindrance of democratization in the region. The contributors consider such questions as: why have some religious organizations played a decisive role in democratic transitions, while others remained politically dormant, and other still acted in conservative alliances to block democratic development? Why did some religious organizations that once were active and instrumental to democratic change lose their political vitality as soon as civil liberties were successfully introduced? And why did other religious organizations, irrespective of their roles in the process of democratic transition, emerge as key political forces in the civil society? ... Product Description

This is the first monograph devoted to divine accommodation in the writings of John Calvin. The text offers careful analysis of the topic along several different lines: it analyzes the character of Calvin’s thinking on accommodation; it reveals the ways in which accommodation expresses itself in his writings; it probes the question of the penetration of accommodation into Calvin’s theology and particularly its implications for his doctrine of God.

Product Description
This book deals with one of the most interesting periods in the development of Indian religious and philosophical traditions. Starting with the teaching of the proto-vedantist philosopher Gaudapada, and then analyzing the ideas of his famous contemporary, the grammarian Bhartrhari, the author suggests an entirely new approach to the whole history of vedanta.

Gaudapada and Bhartrhari are presented as founders of an independent trend within Indian orthodox philosophy, a trend that culminates later in the theistic tenets of Kashmir Shaivism. Isayeva shows that, in contrast to SAankara, early vedantist philosophers regarded the higher Brahman as a kind of continuous reverberation of a peculiar phonic energy that was ever producing the same constantly renewable structures and patterns of the universe. This idea found its continuation in the metaphysical and aesthetical concepts of Abhinavagupta, where the ultimate ontological reality is manifested through the rhythmical outbursts of God's creative power. ... Product Description

"This is a book of extraordinary quality and importance. In tracing the encounter of Jews (the chosen people) and America (the chosen nation).. Eisen has given the American Jewish community a new understanding of itself."-- American Jewish Archives

"... one of the most significant books on American Jewish thought written in recent years."-- Choice

What does it mean to be a Jew in America? What opportunities and what threats does the great melting pot represent for a group that has traditionally defined itself as "a people that must dwell alone"? Although for centuries the notion of "The Chosen People" sustained Jewish identity, America, by offering Jewish immigrants an unprecedented degree of participation in the larger society, threatened to erode their Jewish identity and sense of separateness.Arnold M. Eisen charts the attempts of American Jewish thinkers to adapt the notion of chosenness to an American context. Through an examination of sermons, essays, debates, prayer-book revisions, and theological literature, Eisen traces the ways in which American rabbis and theologians -- Reconstructionist, Conservative, and Orthodox thinkers -- effected a compromise between exclusivity and participation that allowed Jews to adapt to American life while simultaneously enhancing Jewish tradition and identity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Precept Bible studies for children
Of all the aspects of education a child needs, there is none more priceless, valuable and necessary than their own understanding of God's Word.Precept Ministries does an outstanding job of letting the Bible speak for itself for the child,NOT waiting til adulthood to try to find out how God speaks to them

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for a Bible study

Kay Arthur is the founder of Precept Ministries International. For the last four years, I have had the privilege to participate in a Precept class and use Kay Arthur's books as the study material."Jesus--Awesome Power, Awesome Love" is one of the Kay Arthur study books that I used in my Precept class.I am familiar with this series of books and the writing style and material content that Kay Arthur uses in this book.Kay Arthur is a Christian author and this book is written specifically for children who are seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible.Kay Arthur gives children Bible stories to study in a fun format.

"Jesus--Awesome Power, Awesome Love" is a children's Bible study of John, chapters 11 through 16.The book is divided into chapters called Weeks. Each week is segmented into seven days. The purpose is to study each portion on consecutive days. Kay Arthur makes up creative modern-day scenarios to make a factual Biblical point. In "Jesus--Awesome Power, Awesome Love" Kay Arthur encourages the reader to make a movie using pictures and words. The reader completes the Bible story and thus making the movie. The Biblical study in this book is about how Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Mary anointing Jesus and Jesus preaching throughout Israel.Throughout the book there are Biblical cross-references that relate to the study of the book. For example if you were studying the feast of the tabernacles you might go to a different book of the Bible and find information about the same feast and other feasts which are included in the Bible.

I recommend "Jesus--Awesome Power, Awesome Love" because it is presented in a question and answer study format.I enjoyed how Kay Arthur encouraged the reader to produce a movie. In particular, Kay Arthur encourages children to open their Bibles and study God's Word in a deep way.The book caused me to stop and think about my faith in God.This book is an excellent source for a Bible study in a church Sunday school program, kids program or family devotion.

Product Description
Theology and Religious Studies seeks to explore the relationship between the disciplines of Religious Studies and Theology. In particular, it aims to examine whether the two disciplines are strange bedfellows sharing little in common but bedding together out of sheer habit, or whether there is something that the two share in an organic sense, which sustains the link between them.

These questions have important implications not just for how the respective disciplines define themselves and their boundaries, but also for their place in the secular context of higher education in modern universities. The question of how the two are related is one that concerns all scholars of religion, since it has important implications for approach and method in the study of religions. Particularly relevant are questions to do with subjectivity, objectivity, and reflexivity in the study of religion; `insider' and `outsider' approaches; `scientific' and `theological' methodologies; and `public'/`private' dichotomies in defining the `secular' and the `religious'.

This volume is based on a seminar series conducted over 2005-06 in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, at the University of Wales, Lampeter, UK. It brings together papers presented by leading scholars of Theology and Religious Studies on various aspects of their respective disciplines. These include origins; history; founding premises; orientations; methodology; engagement with feminist and post-colonial critiques; and shifts in theoretical paradigms over time. The intended result is the generation of dialogue between the two disciplines, and a self-reflexive examination of what each is about. There is very little available literature attempting such a dialogue between Theology and Religious Studies, and this book will fill a crucial gap in this area. ... Read more
