3-0 out of 5 stars "Kinda" Good...
...I'll use certain parts of this book for reference in my social work practice. When I first began to read this book, I was struck by how the authors seemed unable to get over the fact that they had been asked to write a generalist social work practice book because they kept bringing that fact up, at least throughout the first few chapters of this book.At times, this book also seemed to be an advertisement for particular colleagues in the social work profession, and not any social work professional who could offer scholarly social work knowledge. This book is poorly organized, with concepts scattered about, instead of gathered into one place in each chapter. Therefore, the authors repeat something they've just written earlier, which gives the reader a "deja vu" feeling that maybe one wasn't paying close enough attention to what one was reading, until the reader refers back a couple of pages and discovers that the authors are in fact, repeating themselves.I found this scattered repetitiveness very annoying.Good tables and figures though.Fair glossary.Poor index.Put it this way:When I was writing a paper for my generalist social work practice class, I referred to my other social work texts, when I found this text wanting (which was quite often). ... Book Description

Movements for social change are by their nature oppositional, as are those who join change movements. How people negotiate identity within social movements is one of the central concerns in the field. This volume offers new scholarship that explores issues of diversity and uniformity among social movement participants. Featuring case studies that range widely—from Jewish resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied Poland to antigay Christian movements in the United States to online white supremacy groups—the essays show how participants set aside issues of personal identity in order to merge together and how these processes affect mobilization and the attainment of goals.Contributors: Mary Bernstein, Kimberly B. Dugan, Elizabeth Kaminski, Susan Munkres, Kevin Neuhouser, Benita Roth, Silke Roth, Todd Schroer, Verta Taylor, Jane Ward.

Product Description
Key Benefit: Gives students the “how to” of actually doing social work with elders, not just assessing or understanding the process of aging. The topic of spirituality is rarely covered in texts on social work with elders and is required of health care facilities—and yet social workers must do a spirituality assessment as required by federal licensing officials. Material on a comprehensive assessment of older adults shows students what a good (but not overdone) assessment looks like and how the information can be helpful in their practice. Key Topics: Has a social work perspective exclusively focusing on the process of assessment through the design and implementation of interventions. Includesnot only information on spiritual well-being and how to assess it but also chapters on incorporating elder spirituality in the process of intervention. Entire chapter is devoted to the process and conditions for performing assessments and an example is given of a comprehensive assessment. Market: This book is important for anyone working closely with elders who could benefit from information on assessing strengths and designing and executing problem-solving interventions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book covering diverse aspects of gerontological social work

This book includes the comprehensive information with a certian depth and will be good for those both in undergraduate and graduate levels.

I am reading this book for a graduate class and find it easy to read and full of useful information for the geriatric social worker. While I can find some value laden language, for the most part it is an excellent book with good resources. Product Description

Inspires students by tracing the careers of macro practitioners from grass roots organizers to agency executives

“A truly amazing book. It manages, as few have before, to cross over as both a textbook and a brilliant contribution to contemporary social work practice. As a textbook it's perfect for macro methods and community organizing courses. It's packed filled with wisdom, insight, and experience, all delivered with grace, clarity, and commitment.
-Robert Fisher, University of Connecticut

“Steve Burghardt makes macro practice and community organizing come alive. Instead of turning this important part of social work into a dry series of academic abstractions he shows the reader the wonderful and exciting opportunities that exist. He has inspired us to get out there and make change and help build our skills to effectively do so."
-Mike Eichler, San Diego State University

“This book provides a holistic vision for macro practice in the early 21st century. It argues very convincingly that effective macro practice requires a strategic vision, grounded in values, that integrates personal and community transformation. Burghardt provides a compass, as well as other tools, that macro practitioners can use to make significant social change. It promises to be a very useful resource for community and organizational practice in a number of fields.”
-Lorraine Gutierrez, University of Michigan

“Building upon his influential work on the professional and personal dimensions of organizing in The Other Side of Organizing, Burghardt articulates an innovative framework for macro practice that is mindful of current and future local, national and global economic, social and political trends. With an emphasis on capacity building from the bottom up, this book offers a challenging, yet practical, approach to justice-centered practice.”
-Cheryl Hyde, Temple University

This book develops a new paradigm suited to the quickly shifting dynamics of a globalized society, both more reliant on social networking, and yet seeking common connection and community. By focusing on how practitioners can make meaningful, strategic choices regardless of their formal roles and responsibilities, the author breathes new life into key issues ranging from how to respond to both diversity and oppression, the vital use of the internet for organizing and the limits to “virtual trust,” and co-leadership development.

This text is appropriate for upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level students enrolled in courses such as Macro Practice, Community Organizing, Leadership, and Management/Administration in social work and allied departments.

Product Description

"[T]his book provides practical practice guidance as well as...interviewing and assessment tips....[A]n invaluable source of information for students, practitioners, researchers and educators."
-Karen M. Sowers, PhD
Dean, University of Tennessee
College of Social Work

Regardless of their field of practice, all social workers must understand how legal issues impact the financial, psychological, emotional, and social concerns that their clients face. Yet legal issues are rarely integrated in social work education in a meaningful and practical way. Therefore, it is imperative that social workers gain the interdisciplinary knowledge of the laws and policies that affect their client populations.

This groundbreaking text broadens the traditional definition of forensic social work to include the legal issues encountered in all social work settings-family and social services, education, child welfare, mental health, addiction treatment, juvenile and criminal systems, and immigration services. Advocating a collaborative approach, this book will allow social workers to navigate the complex social and legal issues that affect their clients.

Includes discussions of the common legal issues all social workers face:

  • How to help meet basic client needs such as income, food, and shelter
  • Policies and practice with victims of violence
  • The relationship between school social work and the law
  • Assessment and treatment of child abuse and neglect
  • The legal needs of clients with mental health and addiction issues
  • Forensic practice in juvenile and criminal justice systems
  • Effective practice with immigrants, refugees, and victims of human trafficking

Product Description

Practitioners who work with clients at the end of their lives face difficult decisions concerning the client's self-determination, the kind of death he or she will have, and the prolongation of life. They must also remain sensitive to the beliefs and needs of family members and the legal, ethical, and spiritual ramifications of the client's death. Featuring twenty-three decision cases based on interviews with professional social workers, this unique volume allows students to wrestle with the often incomplete and conflicting information, ethical issues, and time constraints of actual cases. 4-0 out of 5 stars Social Work Book
I needed this book for my intro to social work class, the book itself is not a very visually appealing, but it is full of information. There are no bold terms and bullet points tend to be whole paragraphs, but there is a summery section at the end of each chapter. To study for tests and find key terms quickly it is almost necessary to high-light or underline.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible sample questions
This book has some useful BASIC information. But I really disagree with the way some of the theories are categorized (i.e. what is in the Psychodynamic/Relational group) and some huge chunks that are missing - Attachment Theory, Transactional Analysis. Also, I think the practice questions are inconsistent and not like the ones on the actual ASWB test at all.Sometimes this book prioritizes safety, other times client confidentiality - it is all over the map.And the questions are just really poorly written. There are lots of questions that refer to concepts not covered in their own study guide!!So frustrating.Definitely overpriced. You are better off looking at notes from Grad School and a couple of the suggested text books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good quality.
Book in perfect shape. Helped me pass test!!

Expensive, but better than ASWB cost.

Worth peace of mind for testing.

ASWB stated that the book was not authorized by them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Tool
I read through the study guide about three times, took all the practice tests, and passed my exam on the first try! Although the study guide presented a variety of in-depth information, much of it was not on the exam.I found the most helpful part to be the test-taking tips.Overall, I was satisfied with this purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I complained after the test that this book was not very helpful because I memorized a lot of information that seemed important, but was not on the exam. However, this book was pretty helpful. The book explains that the questions are not ASWB approved, even though similar questions were on the exam.

This book would have been great if it contained more processing questions because the licensing exam was based mostly on various scenarios. I passed the exam on the first try and I only studied from the book for about 3 weeks. This book is not made to be memorized; it is just a guide (one of the best guides available).

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
This book is "ok" for studying. However, it does give you a good idea about how the exam is going to be and how they are going to ask the questions.I'd recommend doing extra research in addition to studying the book. Some of the material on medications is incorrect so you better know your stuff.I think the book should be cheaper! ...
