Product Description

Sociology Now reflects thediscipline today and emphasizes the big questions aboutmulticulturalism and globalization that sociologists ask.

Sociologyhas always offered a way to make sense of the complex and sometimescontradictory forces that shape our social lives in any era. As Sociology Now  explainssociology as both a body of knowledge and a "way of seeing," itshows how two such forces in particular have come to preoccupysociologists and influence the way they look at the events andexperiences of the early twenty first century:

The first is globalization--the economic, political, cultural, and social interconnections among people and institutions all over the world.

The second is multiculturalism--therecognition that race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and other statuses are sources of social inequality, but also thefoundations of our identities.

MichaelKimmel, a leading sociologist and gender researcher, and co-author AmyAronson, a journalist and media scholar, address these questionshead-on as they make a compelling case for the importance of sociologyin the contemporary world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was well worth my money
I took a Sociology class in Maymester--2 weeks of 4.5 hour classes each day. Instead of buying the $100+ book, I just picked up this study guide. This study guide had all the necessary information from the book, and had around 30 multiple choice questions from each chapter--some of which were also used by my professor (must have been included in his test bank from the publishers).

If you're someone who can study from the bare essentials (think similar to CliffNotes on subjects) then I would easily recommend this study guide over the actual book. It's always nice to just flip through the main words and ideas from a chapter, then quiz yourself over 30 multiple choice questions to make sure you picked up on the main concepts. All in all, well worth my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Not Worth the Money
What a piece of trash. The difference between this version and the previous versions are the cover. The worst thing is, the Student Access Code Card is "almost" as useless. When I was trying to register for the code, it didn't recognized the code, and the "Help Desk" are totally useless... more phone calls unless you are an instructor or a technician..., only emails... thanks for nothing. For the money that "I had to purchased at the college because of the Student Access Code Card", I would had taken the classroom versus online.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid purchase of above
I cannot recall a single instance wherein I reached for my Oxford Sociology Dictionary and found the term I was looking for. For example, the term `white privilege' and 'social hierarchy' are not even included. 3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Sociology
If you are taking Ms. Even's class at South College... DON'T BYE THIS BOOK! You don't need it. We looked at it once! Everything you need to know is written on the board.

4-0 out of 5 stars previous edition much better
The new addition by Brinkerhoff et. al., though it provides the basics for teaching introduction to Sociology and by far one of the best texts available, is more efficient, but sacrifices much needed information. The recent edition deletes a chapter and attempts to incorparate issues of poverty and inequality in the other chapters, but this really needs to be its own chapter, so I would recommend that they reintroduce it in future editions.Furthermore, their population and urban discussion is good, but its environmental discussion is weak. They really need to add a stronger environmental piece.Furthermore, I really thought that their section on religion was much better in the previous edition.Students had a much easier time grasping concepts. The authors redid this section and now the distinct sects and subsects are unclear. Finally, I would recommend that if you use this book that you find supplemental material on social stratification, social inequality and social differentiation because the book does a poor job discussing the differences.I also would recommend supplemental materials to discuss the race and ethnicity chapter because its discussion on ideological racism and its history is weak.

Despite my minor critiques, I still would hightly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
This is supposed to be a short review, but the book is okay. Definitely not the best. I used it for Sociology 1 but apparently the person I bought it from used it for Sociology 101 or something like that.

The chapters are long and somewhat dry. I feel like the authors say a lot of things that do not matter. Sometimes, they are not clear in what they are trying to say. Each chapter ends with a section about how the topic relates in the 21st century.

Some topics covered in the book:

What is Sociology?
Methods of the Sociologist
Deviance and Crime
Stratification and Social Class
Race and Ethnicity
Sex and Gender
Age and Sexuality
The Family
Economy and Work
Politics and Media
Education

2-0 out of 5 stars Sociology book
I purchased this book for $40.00, and when I recieved it, on the front cover it says "free issue for professors to review and consider adopting" why did I pay for someone else's free book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Well....there has got to be an easier way to learn Sociology.
You have to read each chapter word for word, or you will not gather enough information to understand the concepts. Explanations and examples are not precise. I'm sure there is an easier way to learn this subject. I would not recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Biased
I am a college student in Nevada and I have this book as the main text for my sociology class. Although this book is colorful, up-to-date, and slightly entertaining, it suffers from rank biases. The authors, especially Dr. Michael Kimmel, are very feminist, hate the so-called "heterosexual, white male" among other things and seem to have a problem with presenting sociology without an implicit ideological slant. Should these people even be writing a textbook? The goal of a textbook is to provide information so the student can come to conclusions on his/her own, not to sneak in a socio-political perspective in the back door. Regardless of the authors political opinions, they should have at least attempted to hide their biases so not to alienate their readers because everyone has DIFFERENT BELIEFS, we are not a monolithic species.

All I ask is just some level of objectivity because it is very annoying to read opinions presented as facts, regardless of political persuasion. Whether or not a person believes that all the world's problems are caused by heterosexuals, Christians, whites, or men, this should not be presented as FACT because at the end of the day it is just an opinion. It should not make it into an "objective" textbook. ~Jessica

Product Description

Organized around an integrated paradigm—the sociospatial perspective—this breakthrough text considers the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, culture, and politics on the development of metropolitan areas. By moving beyond the traditional city/suburb dichotomy, the authors’ unique focus on the continuously changing nature of metropolitan regions makes the material more relevant to students’ personal experiences, and the cohesive conceptual framework engages students’ critical thinking skills. It integrates the social ecological with the political economy paradigm through a fresh theoretical approach emphasizing the importance of space to social life and real estate to the economy and urban development. Fully revised throughout, this edition features a new chapter on metropolitan social policy and expanded discussions of international regions, key concepts, and the effect of the economic crisis on housing markets, public policy, and urban development. Concise and accessible, this book offers students a brief, intelligible history of urban life from its origins to the industrial period, as well as a clear, sophisticated summary of urban social theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Sociology
I am a college senior and am really glad I purchased this item. It has really come in handy for all those sociological terms in my sociology text books. It was a good price and received it in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me from a web of confusion

During my first undergraduate sociology topic, I became confused by all the unfamiliar terms I was encountering in the readings. This dictionary saved me from a web of confusion by clearly defining each term.

The terms are explicitly explained and differentiated from each other. This sort of description is hard to come by in sociological literature.

It also acknowledges the relationship between terms by recommending other terms to refer to.Below many definitions, there are even references to readings if you want more information on the topic.

While the definitions are restricted to explain only the given term, they are also detailed enough to give a good understanding of the meaning and context of the term. Most terms are explained in a paragraph or two, while more important and complex terms or phrases are explained with more information, often in one or two pages.

If you want explicit descriptions of terms that we don't often encounter outside of sociology, or of terms that have a different meaning within sociology, this book will definitely help you.You will be able to write your papers more confidently knowing that you fully understand the sociological concepts.

Even though I no longer study sociology, I am happy to see this dictionary still resting on my bookshelf because I remember what a great help it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Value
This is a great dictionary, but how much information do you really think fits into such a small book? I found it useful for my purposes as an undergraduate student, but I'd personally like to own one of those big fancy sociological dictionaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Guide
For any student of sociology, this is a welcomed addition to textbooks. The dictionary is also a good addition to the library of someone who just enjoys reading sociology books. It has a bit of a British flair because of its authors, but is really a well-rounded and insightful reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perspective From an Instructor
While there are other dictionaries out there that do a better job, for the price of this dictionary it is a great reference for Introduction toSociology students.Definitions range from a few words to a couple ofpages.Usually gives a reference to an author connected to the term andother concepts that might be important to the term.Still there are keyconcepts missing (for instance a definition of methodology) that make thisbook problematic. This book is not written from a particular standpoint, but at times the definitions are classical. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A "classic" that is now quite archaic
Weber's book was groundbreaking when it was first published.Even today, it is considered a classic. However, the reader should be informed that Weber's book is full of white Germanic Christian bias, a bias so strong attimes that it harms the author's credibility. However, if read in tandemwith later works which critique it, Weber's "Sociology ofReligion" provides a glimpse of early 20th century sociologicalmethodology

4-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Introduction to Sociology
The author of this competent introduction to sociology is Dr. Zgourides, a former Eastern Orthodox priest.Dr. Zgourides previously authored several publications that engaged with coping strategies for dealing with anxiety and stress, including "Anxiety Disorders: A Rational-Emotive Perspective" (Macmillan, 1991)and "Don't Let Them Psych You Out!" (Loompanics Unlimited, 1993).

After his tour at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, Dr. Zgourides has fluttered, at times anxiously, about a wide variety of halls of higher and further education across America. He has worked or continues to work as a clinical psychologist, certified acudetox specialist, massage therapist, and volunteer healthcare chaplain with specialties in mind-body psychology, anxiety disorders and phobias, sexuality, addictions, pastoral issues, and Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches to healing. He has held a wide variety of full-time and part-time positions at such institutions as New Mexico Military Institute (Roswell, New Mexico), Capella University (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Dallas Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Dallas, TX), Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon), and the University of Portland (Portland, Oregon), where he was previously a tenured Assistant Professor of Psychology. Dr. Zgourides currently maintains a writing/consulting practice and assists as a staff researcher at Parker College of Chiropractic's Research Institute in Dallas, Texas. His wife, Christie Zgourides, is a former lecturer at a small Oregon liberal arts college and is now an online instructor of writing for Kaplan College, a for-profit corporation owned by the Washington Post Group.

With these credentials, Dr Zgourides has written a sound introduction to sociology, summarizing the major points of current sociological knowledge. After introducing readers to competing sociological perspectives and basic research methods, he discusses culture and socialization, social groups and social organization, crime and deviance, social and global stratification, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, economics and politics, education and statism, family, religion, health, population, mass media, and social movements in the context of social change.

Dr. Zgourides advises to "Ask and answer the following questions when deciding the validity of a piece of social research: Are the sociologists qualified to conduct sociological studies? What are their credentials? Are the sociologists associated with an academic institution, laboratory, or clinic?" (p26).As a participant observer amongst various institution engaged with the social sciences, Dr. Zgourides has an experienced eye for spotting what isn't right, which is reflected in this sound introduction to the field of sociology. ... Product Description
This book was written to bring a more cohesive thematic approach - emphasizing social/global change - to the introductory course and to give students a better understanding of sociology as it is applied to the real world. The text is accessible, while advanced students will be challenged with material in the exhibit boxes such as 'Sociological Methods' and 'Mapping Social Change'.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a WASTE of money!!!
This might be a good book for those who are related to the field of sociology, or are more involved on it. I am a nursing student and I had to take this introductory course. The book was SO confusing, in some parts not so clear, I really hated it. I had to buy it because it was the book required for my course, but I think there would be many other books out there better than this, and easier to understand. The worst part is that it is SO expensive. What a waste of money!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sociology is the key
