I actually bought the paperback version of this book and I couldn't be more pleased with it.I love the study materials it includes, such as pages on the flowers and herbs of the bible. The footnotes on the bible verses are so easy to understand.I recommend buying the hardcover version because my paperback is already showing a lot of wear, and I've only had it about 3 weeks. It really focuses on the relationship between women and God.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Shallow Overall
Not as Biblical as we had hoped for a church group study.Would be better for a social circle, like a Sorority group.

1-0 out of 5 stars Psychology biblical study poorly put together
When our church did this study we were informed that this study wasn't a deep biblical study but it had interesting topics that most studies didn't touch on. I was deeply disappointed as this book was very shallow spiritually and it's not based upon the bible. This study is based upon the book that is based upon the bible which can get things mixed up when it comes to what Scripture truly says. You also need a concordance to work through this book as some of the references are incorrect.
This book took a lot of time to do in a group setting. We did it for our Wed night services and found that the study went way longer than 1 hour time that we have for our church. This cut out all prayer time that the group had so it was hard to build relationships or hold one another up in prayer simply because we didn't have time to share what was going on. The layout that she has a group do for prayer is practically non-existent. While she does encourage 1 sentence prayers this can be a benefit and a huge downfall. For our group we really lost track of what was going on in other people's lives or what they needed prayer in because of the prayer layout as well as the time limit.
This study had a lot of how would you feel if type questions or what did Ruth feel and basic observation type questions. I will add that none of these relationships in this book are recorded as friendships. Many times they are relatives and it's more or less a role of mentorship and how people believe the relationship to be. If you are looking for a biblical based study on friendship just look up the word Friend in the concordance or on blue letter bible and learn from those verses. There aren't tons of verses that use the word friend and you'd be surprised by what you learn.
If you choose to do this study in a group make sure you have at least 2 hours as any less than that you will not get through the study with time to pray if that is important to you. Make sure you have a concordance as well because some of the Scriptures or references are incorrect. (I think there are 4 or 5 that you will need to use a concordance on.)

I am glad to say that I thought I had a problem with seller due to shipping but very VERY pleased to know that they contacted me to explain their shipping. I was the one who didnt understand not them. I would purchase with them again! They had very nice customer service!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
This bible is awsome! I recommend every woman have one, it would also make a great gift for women in your life. I will be ordering a few more very soon for gifts. Very easy to understand and I love the study notes throughout the chapters. Ladies get yours, money well spent!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars NIV large print Women's Devotional edition
I purchased the large print edition, and I am so glad that I did for I do know that the others are tiny print in comparison, and even more this print is what I would call small.I believe it is an enlarged edition of the other ones.Even so that it is small print, I find it readable under good lighting and with my eyeglasses of course. But it is all worth it.The Bible is awesome!I dearly love it.I find myself at home in it.This edition is the large print with brown duo vinyl and the pink flap with magnetic closure. The pink flap is beautifully constructed. The paper edges are silver. They have a similar brown/pink flap one in a compact version.Mine has a sewn binding.Yes!There is a great emphasis therein that Jesus is God, and I am so pleased!!!If you are a young woman with good eyes, you might want to consider the compact version of it, as I am sure it would be so convenient as a carry around Bible. This large print one is not too large or bulky.I think they filled the need here for the same Bible for those who absolutely could not read the tiny print on the others; this one brings up the font a bit for those who want to read this Women's Devotional Bible.I think if they attempted to enlarge the font and redo it for extra large print, it probably would be a huge Bible and very bulky, which would decrease its portability a lot and so forth.I am very grateful for this edition.Thank you, Zondervan!God bless you all!

2-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable women - Unremarkable Book
What am I doing writing a review of a book by Elizabeth George? I was preaching on some of the women in the Bible and came across her book--honest! Since so many people--I mean female Christians--seem to be reading her I thought she might have something worth saying on some of the characters I was looking at. I was sadly mistaken! Apart from her saccharine "Dear friend" and "Precious ladies" approach which grates on the ear, there are several other problems which, if she writes in a similar vein in her other books, are worth noting.

Let me say from the outset that there probably wasn't anything unbiblical in most of what Elizabeth George said. On the other hand, much of what she said was utterly unrooted in the characters she was looking at. It seemed as if she had made up her own mind beforehand what she wanted to say about each, and wasn't going to be perturbed by a little matter like what the passage actually said. For example:

* Sarah is held up as a great woman of faith--despite her laughing at God's promise and seeking her own way to fulfil the promise. Three chapters extol her virtues as an example of faith.

* Miriam likewise is held up as a great example of a godly woman, despite the bulk of what scripture tells us about Miriam relating to her pity-party and grumbling in Numbers 12. Her sin is noted, but only as a closing part of the chapter.

* Esther is held up as an example of faith in difficult circumstances. We are told to seek advice as Esther sought Mordecai's advice in 4:12. But Esther wasn't seeking advice but was being told in no uncertain terms that she needed to act in faith, or she would lose her life. Rather than being an example of faith at that moment she is an example of how not to act.

These examples and others make it look to me as if she is coming, at least mentally, to scripture with her chapter already written, and simply looking for a character to hang it on. The saving grace is that her message is sufficiently biblical, albeit from other parts of the Bible, so that the reader isn't carried away into error.

The problem is that it gives the reader imbalanced impressions of these characters and, more dangerously, a poor example of how to interact with scripture. Instead of teaching us to mine the passage for truth--it being far more helpful to see the error Sarah makes in allowing her circumstances to overshadow the promises of God--it teaches us to superficially read a passage and see in it what we want to see.

Apart from the lack of grounding in the passage one of the other weaknesses was that it simply wasn't very deep--lots of simple biblical common sense, but no real depth, and at times not terribly grounded in reality. I found it ironic that a book on women of the Bible--presumably written to give women a sense that God speaks into their complex and difficult lives--should paint such two-dimensional images of the women.

Part of the problem was that I was also reading "Legacy of Faith" by Lydia Brownback, a book dealing with many of the same female characters. It was rich, provocative, dealt with the passages superbly (in most cases) and got down into the nitty-gritty layers of the heart. Against such competition Elizabeth George fared rather poorly.

In short - its not so bad as to deserve 1 star, but it's shallow enough to be avoided. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbiased & forthright!
Let's face it; most are critical and very opinionated when it comes to women (whether in religion, world, politics, etc.)

Myles presents us with the biblical basics to how (and biblical logic as to why) we were created (for purpose). This book isn't biased or judgmental. The author gives you the information with references - then allows you (the reader) to follow up your own reading for a deeper understanding. I was able to understand principles that many misunderstand or quote incorrectly. We must be in the position to obtain our own level of understanding and this book presents you with that.

If you would like to understand why you were created (your purpose) and the many facets to being a women - pick up this book. It also deals with a lot of stereotypes that people (from all walks of life) feed off of women, without really taking the time to understand why.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite book
I'm sure that this book would speak to some, but just didn't do it for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ordered by mistake, but could be a blessing for my friends.
Well, I really wanted the actual book Captivating, but when I saw Amazon's no return to outside parties policy, I just went with it.Now a group of gals are planning to use it as part of our book club.I have not delved into the study guide to in-depth yet, and I will probably come back to this review at that time.I just wanted people to make sure you want the study guide here, not the book itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars captivaing study guide
this book was to be sent to a friend to take with them to Ecuador - it didn't arrive on time and so I was unable to give it as planned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Captivating by John & Stasi Eldredge - New Age Packaged as Christian Doctrine
First off, this book is supposed to encourage the heart of every woman to become "Captivating" as God designed her to be. However, the message is muddied as Biblical references are inaccurately used to prove the message that the heart of a woman is anything but deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9). Depicting our heart as deserving of all with God in us - especially in the "warrior woman" was the first red flag I experienced in reading this book. As a born-again Bible toting Christian believer, I found this message to support New Age philosophy using Scripture to inaccurately state principles about the heart of a woman.

In this review I will give short statements so the potential buyer of this book is not deceived by the subtle introduction of New Age in Captivating. From a structural standpoint, I found using "we" to prove points frustrating. Because this book is co-authored, I found it confusing at times to realize whether John or Stasi was speaking. The "we" though did not apply to the co-authors but was referring to the reader! However, the "we" is used which irritated me the reader because Scripture was thrown in with oodles of assumptions and generalizations.

I did enjoy several personal accounts of Stasi's and related to what she was sharing. I give grace to Stasi as this is her first book. And for that reason I did give this book 1 star out of 5. However, her husband John has authored several books and he should have known better in writing a book in the third person - especially a non-fiction book.

My objections: John plugging his book for men Wild at Heart often, Bible verses were not cited with versions, one verse was quoted by Dan Allender - who is???(p.51), Anderson quote - where is that argument supported in the Bible? (p.104), elevating Cinderella over the Proverbs 31 Woman, promotion of two New Age books written by Frances Hodgson Burnett (A Little Princess, Secret Garden), The Essence of a Woman New Age (p.132 & 134).

"The War Against Femininity?"I am not familiar with what that war is about but in my Bible the war is against good (God) vs. evil (Satan), Eve was a helper to Adam and God gave Adam domininion over all (p.134). Lastly, what made this book a train wreck for me personally, was the endless references to secular movies, books and quotations (I do not look to Bruce Springsteen for inspiration, Jerry Maguire's "You Complete Me" is not biblical, Dan Fogelberg's "Longer" song I wish had never been brought back up into my memory bank and lastly, Harrison Ford does not make this woman "weak in the knees" Stasi! (p.131).

When I review any book, I try to find the inspiration - the takeaway for the reader. The takeaway in this book was zero other than several of Stasi's stories as mentioned above. I cannot promote a book that disguises itself as a Christian work when it is clearly steeped in not only secular culture, but sadly deceptive New Age doctrine that may be "Captivating" to a new believer or true seeker of God's Truth. I pray these authors do not author any more books in the Christian non-fiction genre unless they get their Scripture in context and accurately stated and properly referenced.

Poor Apostle Peter- he is accused of "trying" to convey a Truth in 1 Peter 3:3-4 (p 136). This heresy is anything but "Captivating!" butdownright insulting to the God of the Universe and the Holy Spirit that moved the Apostle Peter's hand to pen the Scripture.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their [...] book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255 : "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad Day
I was so excited to work through this Bible study with a young woman I was planning to disciple. We ordered, we eagerly sat down to work the first chapter, and we both finished with a sense of disappointment.I have heard so many good things about Woman of Faith and so many wonderful things about their Bible studies, but I found this one to be slightly nugatory.Maybe I set my expectations to high, but I wanted to be wowed and challenged and instead I found the most valuable thing was the conversation sparked by the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars on time
I just have to say that although it honestly took me forever to get through it the last 6 chapters were right on time.As God keeps talking to me about rest. This gave me valid scripture to study and practice rest without feeling guilty.Just gave it to my sister to read that is how good it was for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for new Christians
I am a little disappointed in the content of this bible study. I was hoping for something a little more in-depth and rich in scripture. For those people new to the Christian faith or new to a bible study format I think this could be a great study. I like the subject matter, the questions are just not challenging me in the way that I was hoping. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am real Pleased
I am real pleased with this Book. We are using it in our religious studies

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
I really like the idea for this study but feel that the questions could be more in depth and challenging.I would prefer to think through the scripture and apply it to my life in a deeper and more meaningful way than provided.I believe it is a good study for someone early in their Christian walk, for groups who have little time to devote to preparation, or for those who want a less intense/more superficial rather than deep study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging One Another
A co-worker and I are doing this as a once a week Bible study at work.We both enjoy it.Both of us have trouble understanding exactly what the author means by some of her questions. While there are no right-or-wrong answers, still, sometimes the questions are unclear. But otherwise, it's a great way to learn about Biblical encouragement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Bible Study about Encouragement
Bought this book to be used in a small group study. It works fine for that.It is well written and humorous in places. Not an in-depth Bible study like you get with Beth Moore, but doesn't require the time hers do either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This was my all time favorite bible study book that I have done. I have never thought of encouraging others in this way before. It really goes in depth and makes you think of ways that are out of the ordinary to encourage others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Those Interested in Black Womens Studies
This is a seminal novel in the field of Black Women's Studies, and although it was written about a decade ago it is still relevant. If you are a reader who is new to the field, and is striving to better understand Black Women's Studies and its founding principles, as well as the factors that lead to its development, then this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Altering the Racist and Sexist Paradigm in Academia
This compliation of essays lays down the curricular and research agenda for the establishment of a Black Women's Studies program in the academy. It weaves personal narrative, literary criticism, and empirical analysis which cogently argues that Black Studies and Women's Studies in academia do not adequately address the multiple consciousness of Black women through discourses on racism, sexism, classism, and sexuality. The authors of the various articles articulate the need to look at Black women's lives as multi-faceted and complex, neither wholly positive or negative.I am not sure if the authors decided to change the name of the book to make it more marketable but the original title is "All the Women are White, All the Blacks are Men,But Some of Us Are Brave: Black Women's Studies."I tend to prefer the original title because it brilliantly captures the dilemmas that Black women face in higher education and the wider - negation of their experiences as Black people and as women. The book delivers an historical examination of the Black Women's Studies movement that began in the early 1970's with the formation of the Combahee River Collective, a black feminist organization and the National Black Feminist Organization. It also pushes for the development of a Black Women's Studies program that reaches out beyond the halls of academe and situates its curricular and research agenda in political and economic organizing on behalf of Black women of all educational and economic classes. ... Wow!! What a book! It hits to the core and down to the details.I "tested" the things she wrote and they are true to the letter.Highly recommend this book for any woman who truly wants to be a positive person as well as an encourager.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power of a Woman's Words is Powerful
This book is very simple to read and simple to understand. Its message is very powerful.Throughout the book the author pulls out scripture after scripture on how our words have power. We have death and life in our words. This book will challenge and convict your heart. It will make you rethink the relationships you have with those closes to you, as well as, people that you meet in everyday life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have companion guide guaranteed to change your life
The Power of a Woman's Words Study Guide & Workbook by Sharon Jaynes is the first Bible study I've ever really done. Each chapter has lots of Scriptural look-ups for memorization as well as to illustrate the Jaynes' points about how our words have the ability to lift up or crush other people, bring us closer to God, and help us appreciate each day more. By pairing passages from Job's wife with Abigail, the true power of our words really hits home. She focuses on how we can help our husbands, children, church, and friends in ways that are real. I've read the Bible through three times, but doing this study helped me dig deeper in these stories and see them in a new way. I spent about three days on each study to let each point sink in. I learned a tremendous amount from this book, and the message is one that will stick with me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Heart....
My woman's bible study group is in our first week of the study, it's amazing! Each member I've spoken to is thoroughly enjoying their time spent in study.Beth Moore has a unique way of presenting her interpretation of scripture so that each one of us is able to understand and be astounded by her insights.Looking at scripture, both old Testament and New Testament, and seeing the continuity of the message is inspiring. Can't wait till next week!
This is our second Beth Moore study, we recently completed "Esther, it's tough being a Woman", and I'm sure our next study will be one of Beth Moore's.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place, Member Book updated
I am in a Bible study group, using Beth Moore's studies.I received the book in a very timely manner and I have been using this book every day, and find it informative, as well as inspirational. The interactive work book is helping me increase my knowledge of the Bible as well as helping me grow in my faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woman's bible study: A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place
This is a very insightful; inspiring study by Beth Moore. It discusses the tabernacle in the old testament, and how it compares to God's temple in heaven, as well as to our own lives. Each piece of the tabernacle represents a characteristic of God, which helps paint a clearer picture of who God is. It also discusses how we can better serve God in our lives, just as the Israelites served God in the old testament.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beth Moore study is a blessing
Beth Moore's, "A Woman's Heart:God's Dwelling Place", is the updated study from one of her first written. It doesn't disapoint.Following the day to day study is rewarding and renewing. It could be studied alone but is at its best when studied as a weekly group and with the accompanying videos.

5-0 out of 5 stars God is speaking to me through Beth Moore
I simply want to say that the timeliness (His timeliness) of this study couldn't be more perfect for me.The Lord used her as a tool to not only facilitate our growth in Him, but to truly learn what His word is saying. We (our circle of young women at my church) are on week 3 and I so look forward to the 7 weeks remaining. If you are looking for a true, Bible-based study for your group, you will truly find the riches of delighting in His precious word with this one. ... Product Description
Now in a new edition, Women's Realities, Women's Choices introduces readers to the field of women's studies by examining the contradictions between social and cultural "givens" and the realities that women face in society. Written collectively by nine authors from as many fields and disciplines, the book acknowledges the gap between women's realities and their choices--and both analyzes that gap and looks at ways to bridge it. This third edition has been thoroughly updated to include recent developments in the field. Boxes and pictures now contain more information on the current cultural scene, including popular culture and women artists, such as rappers and rock groups. The book also highlights the impact of the post-Soviet world and economic globalization on women's lives, as well as the feminist issues of the 1990s and early twenty-first century. Chapter references have been updated to include not only films but also web sites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and Bible Study
I'm using this book as a Bible study with 16 others and it is very good. There's plenty of questions to stimulate discussion as well as Bible and everyday life examples of the concepts. Truly empowering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letter to the author of Understanding Purpose
I received this letter from a reader who gave her permission to have it posted here.

"Thank you for your hours of love and study in preparation for Understanding Purpose. I have just finished the 12-week course.

I began a bit skeptical wondering what God had in store for me during this time. At age 58, having been a Christian for 20 years, I didn't think I was questioning my purpose. My role in life seemed clear. Yet 2 years ago my nest became no longer empty as my mother moved in and my husband I became caregivers. (Gosh, this wasn't what I had planned!) To be honest, I understood my purpose; I was struggling to accept it.

Your book has helped me:(1) in knowing the certainty of God's direction in this matter--security I needed; (2) it confirmed the significance in all I do--that even in the little things I represent the Lord; (3) it awarded me warrior status (it often feels like a battle) while knowing I am part of the Blessed Alliance, never alone.

What encouragement! The ladies in our class were from 25 to 70 years old and very much appreciated the discussion stimulated from the study. The highlight of my several years of leading studies came from the most quiet young lady in class last week. Through tears she told me what this Understanding Purpose has meant to her."
