Book Description
"We thought the study of women would be a temporary phase; eventually we would all go back to our disciplines."—Gloria Bowles, From the Afterword

Since the 1970s, Women's Studies has grown from a volunteerist political project to a full-scale academic enterprise. Women's Studies on Its Own assesses the present and future of the field, demonstrating how institutionalization has extended a vital, ongoing intellectual project for a new generation of scholars and students.

Women’s Studies on Its Own considers the history, pedagogy, and curricula of Women’s Studies programs, as well as the field’s relation to the managed university. Both theoretically and institutionally grounded, the essays examine the pedagogical implications of various divisions of knowledge—racial, sexual, disciplinary, geopolitical, and economic. They look at the institutional practices that challenge and enable Women’s Studies—including interdisciplinarity, governance, administration, faculty review, professionalism, corporatism, fiscal autonomy, and fiscal constraint. Whether thinking about issues of academic labor, the impact of postcolonialism on Women’s Studies curricula, or the relation between education and the state, the contributors bring insight and wit to their theoretical deliberations on the shape of a transforming field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased!
I was very happy with the speed with which my book was shipped. I was also pleased at it's overall condition.I have started my study using the book and am very grateful to Amazon.com for helping me begin in a timely fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes it is Encouraging
I really enjoyed the outline of this study guide. It sparked so much conversation. Nicole Johnson writes, 'How can we encourage someone else when we feel so discouraged? Our temptation is to stand in the corner of the encouragement party. Just hang around the edges and observe everyone else having a good time. But that never works. It's not till we start throwing the confetti on others that we realize how much is landing on us! We can encourage others from the overflow of God's encouragement to us.' This work book did just that. Showed us how to encourage one another in a very practicle way!

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to use and practical study guide
We used this book as a small group bible study and loved it.Every lesson had a good combination of Scripture study as well as a practical application that we could use.I highly recommend it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just didn't apply to me
While I agreed with most of what this author had to say about our relationship with God, the topics covered in the book (divorce, eating disorders, sexual abuse)did not apply to me so it was difficult to keep reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars a keeper
There are so many self-help books out there, but this one stands above the rest. Cynthia, a counselor, speaker, mom, and wife, takes us on a personal journey as she shares her own personal story, as well as stories of others who have found themselves caught in the trap of shame. Cynthia doesn't just offer stories, but practical help through spiritual, emotional and tangible steps that take you from guilt, pain or emotional conflict to freedom. This book is a keeper as it contains a timeless message that will help all who want to start fresh and see themselves as they truly were meant to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deceived by Shame, Desired by God
Many thanks to Cynthia Spell Humbert for writing a book that has been much needed in the church.Working with women in ministry over the past 12 years, I have found that there is a deserate need among women to understand who they really are in Christ and how much they are desired by God."Deceived by Shame, Desired by God" is the book I've been waiting for.

Cynthia brings to the table a wealth of wisdom gleaned through years of counseling in a clinical setting, but more importantly, she brings the wisdom gained from dealing with the issues of her own heart.Cynthia helps us understand ourhuman condition and then takes us to the cross of Christ to find the power to break through to the life God wants for us.

Cynthia pulls no punches as she explains how the enemy can decieve our hearts, choking out the love from God that we so desperately need.Thankfully she doesn't leave us there, but takes us straight to the truth that will indeed set us free.We are desired by God!!

The real life stories will intrigue you, the truth of God's Word will liberate you, and your heart will be drawn to the God who desires to lavish his love on you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book that hits straight to the Heart!
This book is amazing!Cynthia really knows what she is talking about! You can tell from reading this book that she is a very caring, experienced councellor! The book hits home for me and I know for a lot of women, whether you've suffered from abuse, a divorce, a painful past, an abortion, or whatever, it will hit home for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Those Desiring to be Free from Shame,
Cynthia Spell Humbert has written a powerful book on shame. It offers hope to those who suffer from shame and gives understanding to those who relate to someone who is dealing with it.She describes shame as an extremely painful internal wound that can cause a woman to believe she no reason to exist. The desire to cover the shame from people and God leads to various hiding patterns in behavior. She identifies places and circumstances that lead women to put on masks to cover their shame as inauthentic churches, dysfunctional families, addictions, sexual abuse, sin, eating disorders and loss of love.Cynthia points out that a woman has great worth in the Lord's eyes and that He used broken, weak and sinful people in the past to serve Him and that He will continue to do so.She also points out that it is never to late to come to God and allow Him to heal and to change the destructive patterns brought about by shame. She balances truth with grace as she covers the need to forgive in such a way that the reader does not feel beaten down but drawn to God's love. Her honesty about her own struggles with shame and how God's using that in her life will also make it safe for the reader bound by shame to be real about their own struggles and to seek help. Thank you, Cynthia, for addressing such a widespread issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Study Review
This is an excellent book for a Catholic women's small group. It has thought-provoking questions and can lead your group into deeper discussions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Infantalizing pablum.
I was completely disappointed with this book. I felt it was infantalizing, directed at women who had little knowledge of the Bible, the role of women, etc. I felt I was being talked down to. My opinion is that a Bible study written for a specific audience or on a specific topic should go beyond the beginner level. In other words, in seeking a Bible study for married women, I wasn't seeking a kindergarden-level Bible course; I was seeking something that would help me, as a Bible reader/prayer of many years, to home in on the Bible's inspiration and guidance specifically for married women. I found the questions uninspiring, and the fill-in-the-blank format to be juvenile. The questions were so superficial that they weren't remotely thought-provoking or challenging. I agree with another reviewer who said that this book assumed that you have a "certain kind" of Catholic husband, or a "certain kind" of past. In that sense, it was judgmental and excluding, and not helpful. I don't know why everyone thinks they need to publish; the world could have easily done without this book. I'm sorry if this sounds like sour grapes, but I feel this book had nothing to offer to a person who has read he Bible even once, and who is seeking answers to difficult situations, rather than coming from the idyllic Catholic marriage/family situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspired
I have used the book 3 times with 3 different groups and they have all really got a lot out of the study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Catholic guidance for wives and mothers
Easy to read, very interesting, good down-to-earth advice.
Helpful bible passages and recommended reading.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Good for small group study as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but something's lacking
The women's group in our parish has been using this book for the past several months. There is much that is good in it and it is solidly Catholic. But I don't think it "hits the mark" for the majority of faithful Catholic women today, that is those who do not fit the model of Mrs. Martin. The main point of disparity is that most Catholic women do not have faithful Catholic husbands, like Mrs. Martin does, who function as the spiritual heads of the households. So much in this book is founded on the premise that they do.

She makes a point in one chapter about how astounded someone was to hear all five of her children had the same father.I wondered at that point about the women reading the book who haven't come from such a wonderful past as she, who have made serious mistakes, whose children do not all have the same father, yet still want to be "women of grace". There was nothing in the book about coming out of an imperfect past (and haven't we all really?), finding forgiveness and striving to become the women of grace God wants us to be.

I also found the format difficult to deal with. Maybe I'm just not the "write in the answers" type of person, but I really did not like so many questions with simple, one-word answers. The book is not really a Bible study, but a Bible-referenced topical presentation. ... Read more

Book Description

Based on interviews with key informants, focus group discussions, and a semi-structured interview questionnaire, this study—framed around four Zimbabwean sites located in communal, resettlement, and urban areas—provides revealing empirical evidence and new insights as to how the land question has unfolded with particular reference to woman and orphans. The research critically examines Zimbabwe’s land and agriculture policies, and the utilization and efficacy of legal redress. It suggests and develops policy responses to cushion the impact of HIV/AIDS on local communities, especially dispossessed women, and analyzes the critical roles played by women in establishing and managing urban and rural support initiatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
This is a very nice Bible. The leather cover is a beautiful color and has a soft feel. The font size is easy to read and the different fonts used make it feel more engaging then just regular text. The devotionals are short to read but offer other verses as references, questions to think about and a quote from a well-known woman. There are numerous reading plans to choose from.My one complaint would be the silver edged pages.I find little flecks on my fingers after thumbing through the pages. Not a big deal but something I wasn't expecting to have happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great choice!
I have been looking for a good devotional Bible and I found it in this one. If you are thinking about making a purchase for yourself, or even for a gift, don't hesitate to buy this Bible. I also bought the companion Men's Devotional Bibles for my sons, and they are very pleased as well. 5 stars from me!

4-0 out of 5 stars New Women's Devotional Bible
The bible is beautiful, and I have not started the daily devotion yet.I was hoping for more commentary. The KJV bible I had spoiled me, as it frequently had 1/5 page at the bottom of definitions, commentarty etc. I'm giving it 4 stars as it is exactly what it says a Devotional Bible, I was just expecting something different

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Amazing Women's Bible! A Must Have!
This Women's Bible is amazingly beautiful to behold! It presents God's words in a manner that touches a woman's feminine heart --- just by the visuals alone! Within this Bible the reader will find God's eternal messages, and questions set forth to the reader to help her think about her role as a vessel of God. In addition, many of the words of inspiration by reknown Christian women drive home, to the reader, just how important she is to God. In short, this is an absolutely cool presentation of God's words. It will surely appeal to women of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Woman's Bible
When I ordered this Bible I must admit that the picture of the cover was the first thing that attracted me to it.At the time I was looking for another Woman's Bible.I stumbled upon this one by accident. While compairing the two Bibles I opted for this one and I am so glad I did. It truly is a Woman's Bible. The Bible I had been using was okay, but I wanted one that was a little more femine.

This Bible is femine while not being to over the top.It has some great quotes in it from some great women. It also has certain Bible verses picked out that would be easy to memorize (if you are in to that).I'm following the daily devotionals and loving it.There are 3 questions with each devotional that they give you to think about.I've been keeping a journal and writing the questions/answers down.

All in all a great Bible! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "What She Wants": Bold and Beautiful Visions for Men, Too!
Highly recommended book for women (and men) who are photography enthusiasts, gender observers, and collectors of erotic photography. As a white male, age 42, I enjoyed this book immensely! The photography, from several highly creative women photographers, is displayed at the top of its form: provocative and beautiful; disturbing and erotic.Photographers like the talented Jacqueline Kennedy of London--whose fabulous print "Other Chambers" is in this collection--offer an erotic vision of women looking at manas sexual creature, sexual object. You'll learn that a penis can be a humorous object for women, mystical , magical and sometimes ugly. Each photograph, like Kennedy's bold and erotic image of a sexually mature, elegant woman fisting a passive man, will stimulate much conversation between men and women. This is a small coffee table book that is bound to be picked up and discussed by friends. It is too important a workto be out of print!Perhaps the publisher will reconsider and reissue this book in a larger format edition?Let's hope so! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Bible Study Guide for Women
We recently started a Women's Bible Study group in our parish. We searched for a Catholic bible study guide that we could use along with the Bible and "Catechism of The Catholic Church".We started using "Courageous Love" by Stacy Mitch and it has worked out great. There are other books in the Courageous Studies for Women series that we plan to use when we complete this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a women's study!
We have used this book for our Women's Book Study this year, covering one chapter per month. It has been a wonderful source for learning, faith sharing, and growing in love with our families, our selves, and those around us.Highly recommended for group study or individual!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome study that involves scripture, Catechism, and Saints
If you are looking for a complete bible study (that's not just for woman) this is the book... It pulls in scripture, the cathechism of the Catholic Church, Saints writings, and future Saints writings... There are 8 woman in my group -- we meet every other week and take about 1 1/2 hours to go through 3 questions. Most chapters have about8 or 9 questions... You can do it on your own, too...

5-0 out of 5 stars For Catholic women!
It's wonderful to find a women's Bible Study out there written specifically for Catholics. There are some good Protestant ones out there, but their "slant" is not always close to the Magisterium's.Besides, where apart from a Catholic Bible study are you going to find comments that include the sacred tradition, Mary, and the Magisterium?Highly recommended for women at any stage in their life who are wondering about holiness, their faith, and trying to draw closer to God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening!
I searched quite a bit for a bible study for women that would meet the needs of my Catholic faith.I first purchased this book for my own personal use. Each lesson builds on the prior lesson and includesscriptural passages and assigned readings. Each lesson is more thoroughthan I had thought, but not overwhelming or extraordinarily time consuming. Time is a critical factor for most women, and this seemed to be justright. After joining a Catholic Motherhood Prayer Group, I was approachedabout putting a Bible Study together...I pulled this book out and submittedit to 23 other women for their review. All of them unanimously voted to goforward with this, and our local priest and spiritual director wasimpressed with the contents. It was decided that the group would use thisbook for the Bible Study. It was thorough, complete, accurate, wellorganized and easily managed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The book is more helpful.
This guide is for study but I read the book, "Lies Women Believe and The Truth That Sets them free" and it is awesome but the study guide was not useful at all to me.

This is an excellent study book which accompanies the hard back book "Lies Women Believe".It helps you to understand how our thoughts can be controlled by false assumptions and how our thought patterns can be destructive. This study has many scriptures that help clarify these negative thoughts that have brought fear and bondage into our lives and shows that there is change available through knowing God's truth and experiencing His power in our lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Conservative Study Bible
I was looking for a KJV study Bible for quite a while when I came across this one.I bought one for myself and one for my long time best friend so we could study "together" (we now live 400+ miles apart). We both love it and really appreciated the conservative view presented in the study notes. Many helpful topics for women.I've enjoyed mine so much I also purchased one for each of my daughters-in-law and have presented them to each on their wedding day.Covers many topics, includingheadcovering and submission. Such a wonderful change from the "modern" versions.I would highly recommend this Bible to other conservative women.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Bible
I have been looking for a bible with conservative, literal study notes.I looked at a lot of King James bibles and was frustrated with most of them.By luck I found this one on sale at my local Christian Book Store, I had a coupon for 10% off any purchase, so I went ahead and bought this book. I was pretty sure it would be just as ridiculous and "modern" as most of the study bibles I had looked at.Wow! what a treat I was in for. This bible addresses many issues that are significant for women, but it also stands alone as an accurate and scholarly work.Headcovering, Submission, Hospitality, Motherhood, Modesty and many other feminine concerns are addressed in a literal and comprehensive manner. There is even a lovely little chart detailing the herbs mentioned in the bible with pictures of each one and details about the way they were used. In addition the letters and words are pretty easy to read.I usually buy large print bibles because of my astigmatism, but this one is perfectly easy for me to read.Besides all of this, it is a lightweight, and compact bible. It easily fits in a medium sized purse.Oh yes, Christ's words are in red too, which is something I always like about a bible.I beleive my search for a great bible is over.I don't usually buy books or bibles specifically aimed at women, but this one really hits the mark.Very Highly Recommended. ...
