Product Description

Women, Science, and Technology is an ideal reader for courses in feminist science studies, science studies more generally, women’s studies, and studies in gender and education. This second edition fully updates its predecessor, dropping ten readings and replacing them with new ones that:

  • extend content coverage into areas not originally included, such as reproductive, agricultural, medical and imaging technologies
  • reflect new feminist theory and research on biology, language, the global economy and the intersection of race and class with gender
  • provide current statistical information about the representation of women and people of colour in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
  • are more accessible for students.

Section introductions have also been fully updated to cover the latest controversies, such as Harvard president Lawrence Summers’ widely debated discussion about women and science and the current debates surrounding reports on the low numbers of female engineers.

Product Description
Islam and women's human rights entertain an uneasy relationship. Much has been written on the subject. This volume addresses it from a new perspective. It attempts to define some basis for constructive dialogue and interaction in the context of international law and, more precisely, in the context of participation of many Muslim States in the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Having discovered a constructive potential in both Islam and women's human rights, the author concentrate on the role which international law should play in promoting dialogue and constructive interaction. This is done mainly through analysis of the regime of reservations and of the practice of reservations developed in the context of Muslim States' participation in the CEDAW.The basic thesis defended is the following: Islam as articulated in the practice of States and women's human rights, as reflected in international instruments, are both results of human activity. Their analysis in this study reveals more commonalities than one might expect.International law should be more attentive to their voices and more innovative in using these commonalities in order to promote constructive dialogue between them and thus help to improve the situation of women suffering from discrimination and inequalities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource of God's view of Women's Role
The Proverbs 31 woman flies in the face of so many stereotypes of the "woman's role".She was a businesswoman, an entrepreneur, an investor, a philanthropist, a planner, a manager and a teacher. She did not wait on anyone to determine what her place in the world should be.Elizabeth George's study of this amazing scripture did an excellent job of opening my eyes to what God sees when he looks at a woman.Whether you are doing a group bible study or an individual study of this scripture, this book is an important resource that should be included. The study is broken into small pieces so that a bit of it can be studied each day.I read and reviewed other materials of Proverbs 31 and this was the best resource I found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing a Paragon
I have used Ms. George's Bible studies for some time, but I was reluctant to have my class do this one. The Proverbs 31 woman is such a paragon of virtue that I didn't think any of us could measure up. This study acknowledges that the Proverbs 31 woman is a composite of virtues, which are probably not attainable by any one individual, but is, instead, a way to set goals for improving one's life. The study is worthy, and each lesson can be completed in twenty minutes or so, which is a virtue in our busy society. I recommend this study to individuals and small groups of women.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatStudy on Proverbs 31
I found this book very helpful because it's easy to read and it's broken up into do able time frames. Each chapter/study takes no more then 20 minutes to complete, but it makes you really consider what this woman was like and how that applies to you. I have found it very enjoyable.I highly recomend it to anyone wanting to further their study on the Godly Woman of Proverbs 31.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discovering the Treasures of a Godly Woman: Proverbs 31 (A Woman After God's Own Heart®)
In a womans life she may wear various hats such as mother, wife, counselor, friend, nurse ect. This book will help you set priorities, understand your purpose, walk daily in clear direction, and enjoy the order, simplicity and fulfillment God wants you to have for your life. This is a wonderful book it has blessed my life and I hope it will bless the lives of each of its readers. God Bless

4-0 out of 5 stars All of Elizabeth George's Studies
I think I have done all her studies and enjoyed them very much.

There are really only two things I have to say about them.

#1) I'm really not sold on the Calvinist beliefs, but could still do her studies without feeling like that perspective was shoved down my throat. She allows Scripture to speak to you for itself.

#2) She could really drop the "honey" and all the oozy, drippy sweetness and would lose nothing in the process. I grew tired of the condescending tones. I really imagine that in person, she probably relates that way and it comes across as truly loving and caring - but the written word somehow does not convey the same meaning. At least that was my perspective.

Yes, I highly recommend all her studies. You will grow for sure. ... Read more

Product Description

Christian women come in many different shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: God wants to work through them to minister to a lost and dying world. But this miracle can only happen as women yield themselves to Him and move closer to His heart. In A Woman After God’s Heart, readers are challenged to grow into Christian maturity. This interactive study, ideal for individuals or small groups, points readers to the promises of God's Word for full and abundant life, and teaches them how to walk in those promises.
A Woman After God’s Heart includes eight weeks of study. Topics include “In the School of the Spirit,” “In the Word,” “Ministering Service,”“Managing the Father’s Affairs” and much more. Each week’s study examines a core belief or practice of Christianity, digs into Scripture to find out what God’s Word has to say about it, offers readers the opportunity to reflect on the past and future of their walk with God and suggests practical action steps to help readers apply what they have learned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
The cover is nice and true to the picture (the embossed design doesn't extend to the back), and I like the topics/articles they address throughout in call-out boxes. I misunderstood that the two-color text throughout does not include the words of Jesus being in a second color (which I prefer). The other color ink is light brown, so it can sometimes be difficult to read. Also, text shows through from the other side of the page, making it difficult to read at times. The page edges are silver and there is a ribbon placeholder (which aren't specified in the description). The margins are also wide enough to write in (if you write small). The notes at the bottom of the page aren't as thorough as some other versions (like a true study Bible). My church uses the NKJV, so I got this to follow along during service vs. as my study Bible. All in all it will serve my purposes, but it won't be my primary Bible. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cotton Candy Concordance Bingo
Studying God's Word is NEVER a waste of time, but studying this particular book felt like eating cotton candy - a lot of fluffy sweetness, but in the end, nothing of substance, not whatsoever.

It really seems as though the authors decided beforehand what they wanted to say about moods and moodiness, and then they just played "concordance bingo," looking up key words about different human feelings and jotting down Bible verses no matter how out of context or irrelevant. For instance, the book contains an entire chapter about "feeling scattered."This really is not an emotion that the Bible itself ever directly addresses, so the authors just took random verses that contained the word "scatter" (or "scattered") and then gerrymandered questions to fit.

What made this study feel even more pointless was how the book made so many artificial distinctions. The chapter about "feeling scattered" was followed by another chapter about "feeling mixed up."Both chapters used random Psalms and various Proverbs twisted completely out of context to support the authors' approaches for dealing with these supposedly different moods.Yet most of us would be hard-pressed to figure out how being "scattered" isn't a whole lot different than being "mixed up," and often, "scattered" people are at the same time "mixed up."Go figure.

The worst aspect of this book was how, when the authors apparently couldn't find Scripture passages that actually addressed their preconceived notions of what they wanted to say, they then turned to "The Message" paraphrase and other "translations" like the New Century Version for "Biblical" support for their ideas. On several occasions, the authors would quote passages from "The Message."These passages actually said something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT in more literal, reliable translations such as the New King James, English Standard Version, or even the New International Version. It got to be almost a given that if they quoted from "The Message," the verses they were using would have little to do with the topic at hand if one were to read them from the NKJV or the NIV.As someone who believes that God meant for us to honor His Word by sticking to what it actually says, rather than a human being's (i.e. Eugene Peterson's) IDEAS about what the Bible says, this heavy use of paraphrases really troubled me, especially because the topics themselves - these various supposed "moods" - already were so far afield from specific subjects that the Bible actually addresses.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the "Women of Faith" organization's editors came up with the concept for a book about moods, and this concept was then handed to a couple of writers who were under major time constraints, so they hastily brainstormed a list of different "moods" that they'd experienced. They then took this list and attempted to turn it into a Bible study by searching out "fitting" quotes from Scripture.

Therefore, what this book really amounts to is a study of the authors' thoughts, NOT a "Bible study." If a group wants to get together to read a nice-enough book about moods that does contain some wisdom and a whole lot of random, disconnected Bible verses, this book is OK.But if you want to actually study God's Word to help you "manage your moods," you'd be better off just reading the Psalms and asking God to teach you by yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Collection of opinions
Approximately 20 copies of this study guide were purchased for our church's womoen's group. This group collectively found the study guide useful, interesting, and worth the small cost.Additional books in the series will probably be purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good subject for working women.
I needed an easy woman's bible study for summer that would allow for it to be completed during a lunch hour.I started this one at my office 3 weeks ago and it has been well-received by the ladies who come for bible study.I love how it is written, and I especially like how organized it is as far as searching scripture when you are doing your lesson.

Although it isn't a hard study, there is a leaders guide in the back of the workbook so if we are stuck on a question we can refer to the answer. I also enjoy the weekly, imaginary "Trinkets to Treasure"and had fun finding the items to display as our reminders.

I plan to continue on with the Woman of Faith Study Guide Series and have already decided on which one. "Encouraging One Another".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study book
Our women's group of 9 are enthused about this book.It is showing us great, God-given tools for "managing our moods".It has lots of Bible verses to look up, and the comments by the Women of Faith are personal and encouraging. We also like the Leaders Guide in the back, for adding to our own comments on the study questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's just me...
Perhaps I'm used to Bible studies that dig deeper into scripture, but I felt I was trying to discuss partial truths. We never stayed on one verse long enough to discuss its full meaning, let alone the context of what was around it.I enjoyed being with a group of women once a week, but I'd rather spend my hour on a more in-depth study. There are no questions that spark discussion of different ways of looking at a thought, a value, or an insight.I can't grow if everyone agrees on everything! This felt like a surface-skimmer to me. ... Find the peace and hope that awaits you once you overcome your fears.

During times of uncertainty, people are looking for answers to their fears as they see things like finances, relationships, and hope crumble around them. But God doesn't intend for His people to live in fear. He wants us to overcome fear and find peace, even in the midst of the aftermath.

Previous study guides on similar topics have helped women learn how to overcome their fears, but none have answered the most important next question: "Now what?" Where do women go once they've left fear behind? What's the next step?

Finding Peace Beyond Your Fears will help women find the peace and hope that God has planned for them.

This is a must have bible for all women. I bought it as a gift for my wife and she completely fell in love with it

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointed
I am disappointed with this bible because some of the verses are combined instead of being listed individually. So, if reference is made to one verse, it is hard to read that particular verse if it is included with several others. In addition, the print is too small, and I even with reading glasses on, I have difficulty reading.

I you do not care about what is written above, then you will love this Bible.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The material for this study was good, but the questions asked in the guide were redundant. They did not inspire thinking.Read the Bible reference, answer the question. No thought required.Done other Women of Faith studies that were done better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not "Adventurous Prayer" - Beginning Prayer
The women's bible study that I attend has used a few of the books from the "Women of Faith Study Guide Series."Adventurous Prayer is the most recent one that we purchased.

Personally I have been very frustrated with this series (and this book in particular) because I feel it just sits on the surface of the issue and never really dives into the "meat and potatoes" of the subject. With a title like "Adventurous Prayer" I was hoping to really dig in deep and deal with some of the issues that we all have with prayer (finding time, listening instead of talking, corporate prayer, consistency in prayer, etc.).I have been a Christian since I was a young child, and I much more interested in in-depth study instead of the absolute basics and a general over-view.

On the other hand, please know that there are some women in my group that are new Christians and they seem to have gotten more out of this book than I have.I have to wonder, though, if the things they are learning are because of the book or because there are 3 or 4 of us in the group that are "adult" Christians and are trying to take the questions that we can more in-depth.

Overall, a book like this could be a good starter for a small group (especially when there is an inexperienced group leader - as there is little to no preparation required for these books), but I would encourage you to find books that go more in-depth as your group becomes stronger.

5-0 out of 5 stars great study on prayer
This is a great book for anyone looking to grow in their prayer life.We are using it in two different studies at our church. As always the Women of Faith ladies give insightful observations and words to live by.This would be good even as an individual study. Many great quotes from the WOF ladies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayer... women of Faith
I have used this book before... it was purchased for a class at my church...great book on prayer, with great discussion questions

3-0 out of 5 stars A prayer primer
My ladies Bible study has just started this book, so granted, I am not writing from the vantage point of having completed the whole thing.Still, I have to say this is probably the least challenging study guide I have ever read. There is a place for it, I'm sure -- I think it would be a great introductory guide to prayer and what the Bible has to say about it, but that's not what I was expecting when we chose it.

Here are a few questions taken directly from the book, at random, so you can gauge for yourself if the material is right for you:

(Ch. 5 - Two-way Conversation)
4. Proverbs 30:5 states: "Every word of God is pure." But can words written down centuries ago be relevant now. [sic] How can they be considered part of a conversation we're having now?
5. How does 1 Thessalonians 2:13 describe the Word of God?

(Ch. 6 - Journaling Prayers)
1. What would you write down in a spiritual journal? Why would you keep one?
4. What will be the result of our meditations? 1 Timothy 4:15 tells us.

The first question I listed, on Proverbs, is about as thought-provoking as you'll find here. It's not a bad question -- it can open up a good discussion -- but most of the book floats closer to the surface.(Again, that may be where you are as you begin to study prayer, so please don't take offense! But with the word "Adventurous" in the title, I was expecting to be taken a bit deeper.)

The last question I listed, from 1 Timothy, represents the format of many questions in this book: the question comes with the answer attached, which is so common in women's guides, I find.Much of the "work" in this book is just writing verses down in the blanks.

It's a lighter book, to be sure, but time spent in prayer and in the Word is never wasted.I will think twice about doing another title from this series, though! ... Read more

VirginiaValian uses concepts and data from psychology, sociology, economics, andbiology to explain the disparity in the professional advancement of menand women. According to Valian, men and women alike have implicithypotheses about gender differences--gender schemas--that create smallsex differences in characteristics, behaviors, perceptions, andevaluations of men and women. Those small imbalances accumulate toadvantage men and disadvantage women. The most important consequence ofgender schemas for professional life is that men tend to be overratedand women underrated.

Valian's goal is to make the invisible factors that retard women'sprogress visible, so that fair treatment of men and women will bepossible. The book makes its case with experimental and observationaldata from laboratory and field studies of children and adults, and withstatistical documentation on men and women in the professions. The manyanecdotal examples throughout provide a lively counterpoint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More People Ought To Read This Book
This is one of the most significant books I have ever read. It is a sort of meta-analysis of a lot of sociological research, but Dr. Valian has assembled it into a coherent narrative, made it understandable for the average reader, and added intelligent and incisive analysis. She focuses on the inherent and unconscious differences in the ways both men and women tend to perceive men and women, or the "schemas" we hold of each gender, and the way our schemas contribute to disparities in achievement between the genders. She supports each point with documented research that you can look up for yourself if you're interested. The points accumulate indubitably to a very persuasive argument that explains much about the professional world today; indeed, the book provides an answer to the question Dr. Valian posits in the title, and it is not the answer of inherent biological differences.

The writing is academic, but I did not find it hard to understand, and it was very spare and clear in comparison to other academic writing I have experienced. The studies are made relevant by and incorporated into a framework of anecdotes, and Dr. Valian explains each study, helping the reader understand its broader application. One of the topics Dr. Valian addresses is that the disparity between the math abilities of boys and girls, often cited in our own culture as an example of inherent biological differences, is absent or reversed in other cultures; in another segment of the book, she cites a study where a woman of the same height as a man was perceived to be shorter than him absent any benchmarks.

Though the book discusses examples and studies from the worlds of academia and business, I believe it has a much wider relevance. In some ways it is "The Feminine Mystique" for a new generation; now that we have addressed (are addressing) conscious discrimination between the genders, it is time to tackle unconscious discrimination. I found that this book made me reconsider my own unconsciously-held schemas, and I often find myself thinking now, "Would I think the same way about this person if he or she was she or he?" It is both an illuminating and sobering examination of our own psychology: illuminating because it may change the way you think, sobering because it will show you how everybody is thinking. Ever since I read it, I have been recommending this book to anyone I thought would read it, and I recommend it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
"Why So Slow" is the most useful book I've ever read on gender issues. It is packed with evidence from psychology and sociology of the ways in which gender affects the way we judge and the way we're evaluated. I took an entire course on the sociology of gender, I found Valian's book more thorough and detailed. And while readable, it's meticulously credible, including citations for every fact. There's no soapboxing or ranting -- just reason and data.

I read the book 5 years ago, ended using it heavily for a thesis I wrote, and still end up referring back to the book every 6 months or so to retell some particularly interesting fact or study to others I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, well-organized, and... ready to go to work
Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women, by Virginia Valian, is a book with a mission. It is not Professor Valian's objective in writing this book to discuss the issues of women in leadership positions with the limited number of other academics studying the issue. It is her objective to shake the people responsible for "the accumulation of disadvantage" of women, and to make them, or their supervisors, accountable for the recruitment and retention of women.

I know this is particularly acute, and action needed, at our nation's universities, where women tend to be recruited less often than men, especially in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, and are promoted at a rate slower than equally qualified males. The book reviews relevant research, discusses the psychological issues involved in our development of "gender schemas," and discusses remedies.

I have heard Professor Valian discuss the issues raised in her book, and she speaks (and writes) with authority and conviction. This book, while not light reading, is written for the educated non-specialist.You can't read it and not be disturbed at how qualified and competent people can be considered unqualified or less competent.

This is a book to read, then get to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true eye-opener!
Valian is a cognitive psychologist.I saw her speak at a local university and was impressed by the breadth of evidence she presented re: how ingrained gender discrimination is in the thinking of both men and women, but also with her logical suggestions for addressing this problem.(She, as a matter of fact, was invited by women students and faculty to help them strategize how to get more women into higher positions.)In her convincing talk, I was struck by the evidence that discrimination is not something "done" by men to keep women down, but is, in fact, "done" equally to women by both men and women. So I got her book and was more impressed when I read it.

Valian presents experiment after experiment showing that women are held back by psychologically ingrained ideas held by both men AND women. She calls these gender schemas, which are a way for the brain to organize complex information.(They are close to stereotypes, but schema is a more neutral term). The evidence is fascinating and convincing.Examples: if a man and a woman of identical height stand in an identical height door frame, viewed separately and then rated, both men and women perceive the man to be taller.Or how a woman can make a suggestion during a meeting and no one hears it, but later a man makes the exact same suggestion and everyone hears it and thinks it's great.(Example after example you will all recognize and be disgusted by!)While the knowledge presented in this book is depressing, Valian ends with suggestions for ways to become aware of these fallacies in thinking and then actively counteract them within organizations.

I LOVE this book and it is a true eye-opener.It has really opened my eyes to what women have to surmount to get ahead when there are so many hidden negative assumptions ingrained in our culture. While it is written in an academic style and perhaps less accessible than a pop-psychology type or journalist-written book, one could read the introduction and conclusions to the chapters and skim parts of the in between text if it gets too heavy.(Like all academic writers she says her main points in the chapter intro, then presents evidence, then summarizes at the end of the chapters.)I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't stop recommending this book to every woman I know.
I waited too long to read Prof. Valian's book. Had I been armed with the knowledge offered in it earlier, I might have been spared some of the most unpleasant experiences and obstacles in my professional life. The breadth of the research covered, on everything from how young girls are channeled into certain careers or non-careers to the publishing patterns of men and women in academics, is its most impressive quality. I find myself referring to it often in everyday conversation, and recommending it to female friends and family members of all ages and levels of employment. If I have more confidence and a more positive outlook on my life's work now, it is in large part due to Prof. Valian's superb mega-study and her suggestions for moving forward. ... Read more

Product Description

The American women’s movement was one of the most influential social movements of the twentieth century. Beginning with small numbers, the women’s movement eventually involved tens of thousands of women and men. Longstanding ideas and habits came under scrutiny as activists questioned and changed the nation’s basic institutions, including all branches of government, the workplace, and the family. Nancy MacLean’s introduction and collection of primary sources engage students with the most up-to-date scholarship in U.S. women’s history. The introduction traces the deep roots of the women’s movement and demonstrates the continuity from women’s activism in the labor movement and New Deal networks, the black civil rights movement, and the peace movement to the height of Second Wave feminism and into the Third Wave. The primary sources reflect the social breadth and depth of the movement. Dispelling the misconception that the American women’s movement was solely a white, middle-class cause, the documents include the voices of women of all ages, classes, and ethnicities. Topics addressed range from wage discrimination, peace activism, housework and childcare, sexuality, and reproductive rights to welfare, education, socialism, violence against women, and more. Document headnotes, a chronology of the women’s movement, questions for consideration, a selected bibliography, and index support student learning, classroom discussion, and further research.

Product Description
Was Paul an opponent of imperialism or a participant in the patriarchal social codes of his day? Joseph A.
Marchal moves beyond this too-simple dichotomy to examine the language of power and obedience, ethnicity, and
gender in Paul s letters, arguing that understanding the way rhetorics of power overlap and intersect requires a
nuanced combination of feminist and post-colonial criticism and a "thick description" of colonized space.
His analysis of gender and power dynamics in the Roman colony of Philippi is an exemplar of a
new approach to reading Paul in his contexts, always attentive to the contexts of the contemporary interpreter as well. The Politics of Heaven offers new clarity and precision in the interpretation of the apostle and the social spaces in which he moved. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Heavenly Here
You know your in trouble when in the first couple of pages the author dons sack cloth and ashes by describing himself as an elite pale male.

I hope that this book would answer some questions I had concerning the Apostle and his interactions with the early Christians of that era. Instead what I got was a disjointed and bizzare rant about post colonial feminism, class mobility and other colonized women. Plus, for some odd reason, the author attempts to link Paul's words with U.S. class power and African women. Perhaps the books most bizzare statement is on page 83 where the author writes that: the colonial imagination can be charaterized as "porno-tropic', as it sexualized and gendered peoples and locations."No doubt Paul was thinking of dusky maidens and palm trees while walking toward Corinth.

Product Description
Does Paul teach a hierarchy of authority of man over woman, or does he teach the full equality of man and woman in the church and home? In Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip Barton Payne answers this question and more, injecting crucial insights into the discussion of Paul's view of women. Condensing over three decades of research on this topic, Payne's rigorous exegetical analysis demonstrates the consistency of Paul's message on this topic and its coherence with the rest of his theology. Payne's exegetical examination of the Pauline corpus is thorough, exploring the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings to various Christian communities. Paul's theology, instruction, and practice consistently affirm the equal standing of men and women, with profound implications for the church today. Man and Woman, One in Christ is required reading for all who desire to understand the meaning of Paul's statements regarding women and their relevance for Christian relationships and ministry today. This work has the potential of uniting the church on this contentious issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Study of an Important Issue
This is a strong scriptural look at the unity of women and men in Christ according to Paul's writings. Dr. Payne wrote this for the Evangelical Free Church so that they would reconsider their stand of not ordaining women. He cogently argues from Galatians 3:26-29, 1 Corinthians 12:12, Colossians 3:11, and elsewhere that Paul's uniform vision is Jew and Gentile, man and woman, slave and free, united and equal in Christ. No problem there.

Dr. Payne goes on to expound some controverted texts in 1 Corinthians. He argues at length that wherever the word kephale (Head) shows up in 1 Corinthians 11:1-10, we should interpret this to mean source rather than leader or authority. Therefore, Paul is not saying that the leader of every man is Christ, and the leader of the woman is man, he is saying that the source of every man is Christ, and the source of the woman is man, and the source of Christ is God. He gives parallels in ancient literature, but the argument is strained. The head covering debate is really a hair covering issue rather than a hat covering issue according to Payne, and this may be right. He also shows from 1 Corinthians 11:5 that both women and men can pray and prophesy in church.

Payne then goes into 1 Corinthians 14 and gives a painstaking, 42 page deliberation on why verses 34-35 were interpolated into the text centuries later. He argues forcefully for this, because he knows if Paul really did say that women are to be silent and submissive in the churches at all times, this shoots down Payne's position that women can pray and preach and lead in church.

Payne shows that these verses were not quoted in the first couple of centuries of the church, and when they show in later texts, they are not always in the same place. He also demonstrates that Paul says elsewhere that we are not under the law, but under grace (Rom 6:14), so why would he invoke the law to keep women from speaking? No where else does Paul invoke the law.

After a long, passionate discussion, I must say that Payne has finally persuaded me in the end that these verses could very well have been interpolated.

There is also a long discussion of Ephesians 5:21-33 where Payne reminds us that the word "submit" cannot be found in Ephesians 5:22, and there is an intense, scholarly, cogent exegesis and exposition of 1 Timothy 2:8-15, where Payne interprets Paul as saying "Since women are the targets of the false teachers in Ephesus and since they are helping to propagate this false teaching, I do not permit (right now) for a woman to teach or assume authority over a man, she should learn in quietness and silence. We need to remember that Adam is to be respected as the one who is the source of women. Moreover, just as Eve was seduced by false teaching in the garden of Eden, so also the Eves of Ephesus are being seduced by false teaching. But women will be saved through the childbirth of Jesus Christ if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with propriety." Payne may be right again!

Then Payne takes great pains to show us that the instructions to elders and deacons in chapter 3 apply to both women and men. But if he is declaring that women ought not to teach at the present time, it's hard to imagine that they would be given instructions on how to be elders and deacons, especially since one of the big requirements is to be "able to teach - 1 Timothy 3:2). Also, the reference to elders and deacons being the husband of but one wife cannot easily be swept aside, as Payne tries to do.

At the end of the day, I believe that Payne has shown that the ordination of women into pastoral ministry should not be forbidden, but it is not a slam dunk. Much hinges on whether or not Payne is correct about the interpolation of 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, and the temporariness of the injunctions in 1 Timothy 2:11-15. This is an important book and is probably going to be considered the benchmark for the egalitarian position regarding man and woman in Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and insightful
Payne's new book is an incredible work.He gives very good insights into the "gender" verses in the Bible. If you think you know what the Bible says on gender but have not read this book, I strongly encourage you to read it.

Payne has a blog where he answers questions and responds to reviews, most recently to Schreiner's negative review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Whether or not readers align with Payne's conclusions, his research is comprehensive and fair-handed. Anyone who takes seriously the teachings about women in ministry and the Word of God will find here a biblically faithful, historical responsible, and culturally insightful defense of evangelical egalitarianism. To ignore Payne's research is to miss some of the most important findings to date on a topic that continues to divide Christianity in North America. I very much appreciate the author's commitment to all the relevant biblical data. While he shows appreciation for the cultural and social backgrounds surrounding the Pauline corpus, Payne does not "foreground" them unnecessarily such that they eclipse God's holy Word. His high regard for Scripture is evident on every page and he plainly states his full belief in inerrancy of Scripture. Moreover, he takes on the loudest voices from the other side (Wayne Grudem, Douglas Moo, Andreas Köstenberger, et al.) and graciously engages them without compromising his findings. Quite simply this is the best treatment today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, St. Paul was an egalitarian
Philip Payne's new book is an extraordinarily well-done study of Paul's letters, in the areaof women's roles in the church. Payne has studied this subject in detail for several decades. His knowledge of the 1st century AD background, of New Testament Greek, of textual criticism, and of the theological issues is extensive. His viewpoint is thoroughly evangelical. He zeroes in on several controversial passages in Galatians, I Corinthians, Ephesians, and I Timothy. He shows convincingly that Paul desired that all social groups be equal in status and potential role in the early church: Gentiles as well as Jews, slaves as well as masters, AND women as well as men.His tone is irenic, although he often quotes the views of those who believe in hierarchy and/or patriarchy. He shows how careful exegesis refutes the views of those who believe that women must remain in non-leadership roles in the church. His discussion of I Corinthians 14:34-35 is outstanding, demonstrating that these two verses are almost certainly an interpolation that came into the NT text a few generations after Paul wrote his original letter. Regarding the 1st letter to Timothy, Payne discusses the fact that there are NO masculine pronouns in Paul's lists of requirements for overseer, elder, or deacon roles that would limit these roles to males, showing rather that "anyone" or "whoever" fits the characteristics (such as trustworthy, hospitable, gentle, being above reproach, etc.) could aspire to one of these roles, which is said to be a "noble task."
Dr. Payne originally started his studies of these passagesfrom an adversarial viewpoint, attempting to prove the hierarchical stance, butafter prolonged study found that he must come to opposite conclusions.I highly recommend this marvellous book.It does require close attention in reading but is worth the effort.Definitely five stars. ...
