Within the Special Forces Group, the primary operational unit is the Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA); a twelve man team of highly trained Special Forces soldiers (sometimes referred to as "Green Berets"). Each ODA has its own number (such as 536, 525, 584, etc.) to give each team its own identity. Due to military training, exercises, and deployments, for each adventure race the members of ODA 5XX cannot all come from the same ODA. Adventure Racing 101 By the late 1980s, the world was picked over; the highest peaks climbed, the largest deserts crossed, the oceans sailed and the skies crisscrossed by space exploration. Into this void stepped the Raid Gauloises, a race that sought to reconnect man with nature, to reclaim the spirit of discovery and adventure. The Raid created a new category of sport, the multi-day, team endurance race. Teams must stay together and navigate through the outdoors for as little as 3 hours or as long as ten days. The disciplines vary: mountain biking, paddling, trekking, rappelling, but the essentials remain: racing non-stop, around the clock, as a team, in hopes of meeting the rigors of the course and the great outdoors. From its first race in 1989, the Raid was a surprising commercial and popular success, capturing the imagination of adventurers and the public and reigniting the quest for adventure. Others followed: the Eco-Challenge, which, like the Raid, presents an exploration-length race. The Southern Traverse and the Mild Seven Outdoor Quest, which merge arduous terrain, heavily-subsidized media exposure and elite athleticism, also followed the lead set by Raid. Within the past two years, a host of domestic adventure races have helped spur the sport's growth. Races such as the Hi-Tec Adventure Series and the popular Cal-Eco Adventure Series have put adventure racing into the national consciousness and within reach of recreational athletes.
