There are 45 known zoos in Ontario and only seven are accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) . Throughout the year, the Ontario SPCA initiated and supervised the inspection of 27 zoos, including six accredited facilities. The inspections were conducted according to a protocol and Zoo Inspection Report developed by the Ontario SPCA. Although the Ontario SPCA has always responded to cruelty complaints lodged against zoos, these planned inspections are new. The zoo inspection protocol requires inspectors to send a letter of introduction to local zoos, requesting that the zoo owner contact the inspector to arrange a suitable time and date for inspection. Most zoo operators are welcoming; only three operators refused inspection during 2000. However, the three were advised that the Ontario SPCA would respond to any complaints of cruelty or neglect registered against the particular zoo.

Dog fighting starts by training dogs to fight. This training can include using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits, or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements. The dogs are often starved and beaten before confronted with the "bait". After a dog is deemed fit enough to fight, they are placed in a pit (generally an area enclosed by plywood walls) where they attack and maul another dog also placed in the pit. These fights are attended by people who make bets on which dog will come out of the fight less hurt. Fights can average nearly an hour in length and often last more than two hours. The fight ends when one of the dogs is no longer able or willing to continue.
