Extractions: Was ist Arnis? Wie ist Arnis entstanden? Arnis ist eine philippinische Kampfkunst, ein weicher Stil. Und: Arnis ist ein homogenes Selbstverteidigungssystem. Das sind viele andere Kampfsportarten auch. Aber: Im Arnis lernen wir Bewegungsabläufe mit einem Stock kennen. Und wenn wir diese Bewegungsmuster gelernt haben, können wir sie - das ist Besondere am Arnis - auf Gegenstände des täglichen Lebens übertragen. Kugelschreiber, Buch und Handtuch, Schuh, Gürtel oder Zeitung sind dann für uns in der Selbstverteidigung sinnvolle Hilfsmittel. Arnis ist also kein Stockkampf, sondern ein viel umfassenderes System, in dem Stockkampf einen Teilbereich darstellt. Auch waffenlos funktionieren die Techniken nach den gleichen Bewegungsmustern. Das können die meisten anderen Systeme nicht. Wer also erkannt hat, daß man Reflexschulung nicht unbegrenzt betreiben kann, hat den ersten Schritt zum Arnis schon getan. Die Philippinen sind vor vielen Jahrhunderten von Seefahrern aus dem südostasiatischen Raum besiedelt worden. Diese brachten ihre heimatlichen Kriegskünste mit. Über lange Zeit entwickelte sich ein besonderer Stil, dessen erstes prominentes Opfer Ferdinand Magellan war, der 1521 von Häuptling Lapu Lapu mit Arnis-Techniken ins Meer zurückgedrängt wurde. Unter spanischer Besatzung wurde das Arnis-Training verboten. Die Filipinos "verpackten" die geschmeidigen Arnis- Techniken in ihre Volkstänze und konnten so unter den Augen der folklorebegeisterten Spanier ihren Kampfsport trainieren. Über Jahrhunderte wurde Arnis im Geheimen geübt, Väter gaben die Technik an ihre Söhne weiter. Erst nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg hat

Sifu-Guro Dan Cepeda started his training in Kenpo in 1966 with Master Brian Adams, who was one of the first generation Black Belts of the late Grandmaster of Kenpo Karate, Mr. Ed Parker. In the mid 1970's, Master Dan trained with Master Narrie Babao in the Art of Arnis De Mano. Master Dan Cepeda transferred the studio to his student, Sifu-Guro Joe Abueg in 1995. Cepeda-Abueg Martial Arts is currently owned by Sifu-Guro Joe Abueg. Classes are offered in the dynamic Arts of Kenpo and Arnis De Mano to people of all ages.

It was developed by a man named Remy Amador Presas and was first taught in the Philippines in the late 1960's. The art is a modernized version of Arnis ( also known a Kali ), hence the name "Modern Arnis". The art utilizes sticks (canes), bladed weapons and empy hand techniques in its defensive tactics Arnis ( Kali ) as an art dates back several hundred years having its origins in the Philippines. Its name comes from the ancient Malayan word for large bladed weapon. Bladed weapons were not native to the Philippines, but in roughly 200 BC the Malays migrated to the area and brought bladed weapons with them. These new weapons were eventually added to the native fighting arts. Kali not only was used for self-defense but was also considered entertainment. In the early days it was so popular that it was known as the sport of kings. However, this popular art began to decline as early as 1596 when the Spanish authorities discouraged its practice. They felt that the practitioners were spending more time practicing Kali than tilling their land. It eventually was band in 1764. The revival of Kali and its name change is said to be due to a play known as the moro-moro. The play called for fight scenes requiring bladed weapons. They decided to use Kali for those scenes. In the play, the fighting Spanish soldiers wore arnes, the color trappings worn by medieval soldiers. From arnes came the word Arnis. The official name change did not come until 1853. However, there are still some parts of the Philippines that refer to Arnis as Kali. Over the years Arnis was practiced throughout the Philippines and fluctuated in popularity, but again slowly began to decline. It wasn't until Remy Presas came along that it made its next great revival.
