Extractions: This is the begining of what I hope to be a bare bones visual record and possible diary of the Arcata Bike polo scene. The sport has existed in Arcata in its current form since this years Bikeweek last July. It is very loosly based on a well regulated and internationally recognized game known as bicycle polo. Anyone is welcome to play using any bicycle and stick (mallet) they wish. We have been playing where ever it is convenient and where there is room. We emphasize good-sportsmanship in this fast paced game. It seems that the players recognise the various playing styles and chalenge one another accordingly. We try not to deliberately hurt anyone but the game is of course full of accidents. Helmets, gloves and appropriate footwear is strongly advised. Everyone must know his or her own limits while playing. Games last roughly two hours and we haven't really ever kept score. There is just this fun perpetual rally that ends when it is either too dark to play or we all tire out. Currently we meet at the Hub on Saturdays and have been starting the game two hours before sunset (about 4pm). The Hub, which is the main work/storge facility of the Arcata Bicycle Library, is located between the Acata Post Office and the Hospice Thrift Shop on 8th street. I welcome any sugestions that may make this web-site more intersting or useful. For now it is just a place for us players to see how silly or heroic we look. We are trying to put up the best images we can using what ever medium we have available. Maybe we need a sketch artist? I have included links to other bicycle polo sites and fun bike related sites.

Look around because people may be playing on any of the soccer fields. Bicyclepolo is great fun! For those who enjoy cycling, hockey and in fact any team sports, this really is one to play. History Bicycle polo is not new to this country. Records show that there were five centres for the sport in 1895 but it was four years before that the very first game was played in Ireland. Cyclist Richard Mecredy devised this form of polo and his club, Ohne Haste CC played in that pioneer match at The Scalp, Country Wicklow on 4th October 1891. The first official international took place at Crystal Palace in 1901. Ireland beating England 10-5. The next landmark was in July 1908, when Ireland beat Germany 3-1 in an Olympic Games match at Sheperds Bush, London. Then came World war and a severe blow to the sport- it took tens years for a recovery. Bicycle polo arrived at its strong point in history before the Second World War -nearly every cycling club had at least one team and it was commmonplace to see the many leagues that opperate all over Great Brittian carrying 20 teams to each dividision.
