Ficco's Bowl-A-Drome / Franklin, MA candlepin bowling. The foul line must be observed at all times. It must be rememberedthat candlepin bowling is a rolling game, and the ball must not be thrown. http://www.ficcosbowl.com/about.htm
Extractions: Candlepin Bowling The candlepin game was introduced in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1890. It was created by a billiard-room owner, Justin P. White, and a Billiard expert John J. Monsey. Mr. Monsey was convinced that bowling should not be all big balls and big pins, and it was his idea that a smaller ball and pin would be more appropriate for the temperaments and physical make-up of many bowlers. The first candlepin was 11 inches high and tapered to an inch in diameter at either end. The ball was made of wood, weighed about 2 pounds and was 3 inches in diameter. The lanes were the same as the tenpin alleys. From the 60-foot distance the slender pins looked like the candles on a birthday cake, and that is how they got their name. Since the pins were set up as in the regulation tenpin game, their slimness made the distance between them greater. That, combined with the small size of the ball, would have made the game too difficult if the creators had not thought of a counteracting feature. They decided to make all fallen pins, or deadwood, playable as long as the pins remained on the playing area. The Game of candlepins spread throughout New England and the Canadian Atlantic seaboard, replacing the skittle alleys, where larger pins and disks rather than balls were used, together with a different approach. The newer, more scientific game became so popular that today it is played in such diverse places as California and Hanover Germany.

Candlepins use a 4 1/2" ball which is rolled at tall thin bowling pins which taper at the ends resembling candles hence the name. Candlepins are far more challenging than other forms of bowling with a perfect game never having been achieved. The high score to date is a 245, however the novice should be very happy with a 90 or 100 score. Candlepin bowling, unique to New England and parts of eastern Canada, held a prominent spot on the area's sports pages through much of the 1900s, and Channel 5's Saturday morning show, which ran for 37 years until 1995, was among the weekend's most-watched sports programs. No bowler, male or female, could match the name recognition of Stasia Czernicki.

Extractions: 80s Saturdays These are taken straight from my collection of TV Guides... These are here to help you remember how you spent your mornings in the 90s. I started with 8 AM, since I'm assuming most of the major network stations picked their own schedules before that time in the morning. 8AM to 11AM was pretty much the standard Saturday morning prime-time schedule for me. I'm sure that not all regions followed these exactly, and no, I don't really want to know the differences. There are a few regional things like "Candlepin Bowling" which I'm sure is not shown much outside of New England. There is also a possibility that this isn't the correct line up for every morning of that season. The WB for instance, likes to move it's programming around every few weeks for special days, and it's possible I picked a bad day to compile a list from. Fall of 1992, NBC dropped much of their morning cartoons, and began running (yawn) their newscast all morning long. Sometimes they'd run Saved By The Bell or something around 11 am. Since they're traitors to the Saturday morning tradition, I stopped listing them once they stopped conforming. As you can tell, this list has not been completed yet, it will hopefully be complete in a week or two.

Polarblog :: 02.22.2003: Youve Never Been?, By Elliott Youve never been? Have you ever been candlepin bowling? Have you ever evenheard of candlepin bowling? Commentary. I HATE candlepin bowling!!! http://polarblog.com/archives/00000088.html
Extractions: saturday, 02.22.03 Youve never been? Have you ever been candlepin bowling ? Have you ever even heard of candlepin bowling ? I hadnt until just recently (that goes for either question), and now that I have - again, in relation to both inquiries - I miss tenpin bowling. Apparently there is a history to this miniaturized yet elongated , somewhat unkempt game of bowling and a (perhaps fictitious) account of how it came about. Whatever candlesticks origins, its sphere of development and influence seems to be reserved to New England. Factoids aside, candlepin bowling is a rather difficult little game or perhaps more aptly put, it requires greater effort than what the rest of the country knows as tenpin. A facet of the game - the one I had always assumed to be bowling, not its spurious brethren - is that when you roll the ball with any sort of gusto and or spin to it, the pins tend to explode upon impact. If, during a tenpin frame, you placed the ball in the 1-3 pocket, then there was at least a decent chance you could get a strike (and if you bowl like me, then you consistently throw Brooklyn style, which is a shot where the ball drifts across the lane, smashing into the 1-2 pocket). Alas, there are no such assurances in candlestick. For starters neither ball nor pins have a significant amount of weight and are thus lacking enough mass to provide any serious discharge of energy. Hurling one of those undersized spheres down the lane seems to be a repudiation of
