Extractions: The purpose of non-competitive lure coursing tests is to offer sighthound breed owners a standardized gauge to measure their hounds' coursing instinct. The competitive lure coursing trial program aims to preserve and develop the coursing skills inherent in the sighthounds and to demonstrate that they can perform the functions for which they were originally bred. Coursing is a great way to keep your hound physically and mentally fit. Dogs must be at least one year old to run at an AKC-approved event. Dogs with breed disqualifications are not eligible. Check the standard for your breed or the Lure Coursing Regulations for more information. Many AKC affiliated clubs offer non-competitive Lure Coursing clinics for novices.

The Gap kind of bores the hell out of me, so it never occurred to me to check out Gap Body until this weekend when I wandered in just so I didn't have to go into Victoria's Secret and remind myself how much I hate it in there (whorehouse decor + pushy salespeople + crappy merchandise = very cranky Jackie-O). Many say that they originated in ancient Egypt and the Phoenicians exported them to the islands of Malta and Gozo in the Mediterranean. There, the breed known as Kelb-Tal-Fenek, was kept pure for the next three thousand years where he is the National Dog of Malta. Others argue vehemently that the breed originated in Malta and the similarity to the artwork of ancient Egypt is coincidence. Whichever side of the debate you're on, all agree the Pharaoh Hound is one of the most (if not the most) ancient of all breeds and still very similar to their ancestors. Their job throughout the millennia has been to hunt using their wonderful eyesight, speed, and wits. Their specialty on Malta was the rabbit. Kelb-Tal-Fenek means "dog of the rabbit." This hunting focus has molded a dog that is athletic, intelligent, and self confident. The breed enthusiasts take great pride in maintaining this wonderful breed as close to its roots as possible. Our noble forefathers could appreciate the speed, agility and grace of watching the hounds run, to them coursing was a favorite sport. Coursing is running specially bred hounds at top speed to simulate the hunt. These powerful animals are fast, agile and thrilling to watch. In period servants were sent to find a nice open field with rabbits in it, they would call the hound handlers (called Fewterers), to bring the hounds then flush out the hare to give it a running start. A brace of hounds (two dogs at a time) would chase them. These hares would usually run straight until they saw the hounds coming up behind them, then with lightning speed dart off in another direction looking for a safe place to hide. The well-trained hounds would work in unison to catch the elusive hare. This would continue until either the hounds caught the hare or the hare disappeared into the thick underbrush. The Nobility would follow on horseback and wager on which hound would give the best chase or catch the hare first. This was a very spectacular sight as it tested not only the hounds speed but also agility and intelligence at the hunt.

Extractions: This is Coursing The Hares C oursing is one of the world's oldest field sports. Since the days of the Pharoahs "gazehounds", dogs which hunt exclusively by sight, have been tested in competition. Arrian, a Roman writing in AD 116, laid down: "The true sportsman does not take out his dogs to destroy the hares, but for the sake of the course and the contest between the dogs and the hares, and is glad if the hare escapes." His words are just as relevant today. A 11 coursing under National Coursing Club Rules takes place in open country. The wild brown hares are at liberty on their own territory and the fields are not enclosed in any way which would prevent the hares I escape. Beaters, in the same way as for game shooting, drive the hares' one by one on to the running ground. A lternatively, as in rough shooting, the hares are put up by the company walking across the fields to be coursed over. T he hares are not released from boxes, nor are they caught up afterwards. G ame Conservancy research has shown that on estates where coursing takes place, hare numbers are increasing against the national trend. Habitat is carefully preserved, the farming regime is sympathetically modified, and there is no shooting of hares, the most significant factor in the encouragement of hare numbers.
