Extractions: The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival The Dragon Boat Festival is a lunar holiday, occurring on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival is a significant holiday celebrated in China, and the one with the longest history. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by boat races in the shape of dragons. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first. The boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival are traditional customs to attempts to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan. Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese citizens now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water. Therefore the fish could eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating tzungtzu and rice dumplings. The celebration's is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. It is done so by different practices such as hanging healthy herbs on the front door, drinking nutritious concoctions, and displaying portraits of evil's nemesis, Chung Kuei. If one manages to stand an egg on it's end at exactly 12:00 noon, the following year will be a lucky one.

Extractions: Website last updated 20th March. Click here Dragon Boating is an exciting sport that is taking the country by storm! If you are looking for a fun and challenging new sport then why not give it a go? Dragon Boating is the one of the worlds most popular sports and over 30 countries have teams. It is the fastest growing watersport in the UK and there are now over 600 crews registered here. The brightly painted fibre-glass boats are about 40ft long and decorated with a dragons head and tail. Each holds up to 20 paddlers sitting side-by-side. There is a helm who steers the boat and the paddlers are kept in time by drummer who beats a large drum. Regattas are often held on multi-lane courses, which can result in very exciting (and very loud) racing. Normal race distances are 250m (short race) and 500m (standard race), although there are some events with races of 1km and more. Crews are divided into various classes including premier, standard, mixed, ladies, junior and charity.
HKIPC Dragon Boating dragon boating The Hong Kong Island Paddle Club seeks to challengethe existing standards of dragonboat racing in Hong Kong. By http://www.hkipc.com/sport.htm
Extractions: Dragon Boating The Hong Kong Island Paddle Club seeks to challenge the existing standards of dragonboat racing in Hong Kong. By striving to improve our quality of racing and strengthening our own performance year by year, we throw down the gauntlet to many of the local teams who have long been favored to win in the past. We approach dragon boating as a sport and provide opportunities for our members to paddle all year for fitness and for fun, which is a much different attitude than that of many of the Hong Kong teams. Dragonboating is still very much a festival activity here and even the more competitive teams only commit to a very short training season. Over the years we have spread our dragons "talons" beyond the boundaries of Hong Kong and now compete throughout South East Asia each year. The Hong Kong International Dragonboat Festival is our "home" event, but each year you may see the "purple battalions" at any (or all) of the following events: Perhaps it is just in the nature of Hong Kong. The turnover rate of our paddlers is high as our Club tends to attract many people from the Hong Kong expatriate community. Most people who come to Hong Kong from other countries stay a relatively short period of time. Many have no previous experience paddling at all much less dragon boating. It is an added difficulty for our Club having to train up first year paddlers to take on the best teams in Hong Kong and the world, though it could be considered one of the more exciting aspects of our Club.
