Extractions: Duckpin Bowling started in Baltimore, Maryland in 1900. The game was first played at the Diamond Alleys on Howard Street, a bar owned by Wilbert Robinson and John J. McGraw who were members of the original Baltimore Orioles baseball club and went on to manage the Orioles. Tenpin bowling was then strictly a winter sport, though a few alleys stayed open in summer so bowlers could practice their games. John Van Sant, manager of the Diamond, first had the idea to cut down a regular tenpin and use a smaller 6-inch diameter ball. He showed the game to Robinson and McGraw who liked the idea of the smaller ball because it would save the arms of their pitchers during the summer baseball season. Robinson and McGraw, who were duck hunters, gave duckpin bowling its name because of the way the duckpins would fly (like ducks?) when struck by the ball. Duckpins grew from its birthplace in Baltimore, where it remains the most popular form of bowling, and spread along the east coast and into Canada. By 1938 there were 200,000 duckpin bowlers in the United States. The Duck Club is the first duckpin bowling center west of the Mississippi River Let the Duckpins Fly!

Most alleys closed down for the summer, but a few of them remained open so that bowlers could practice with small balls, about 6 inches in diameter. They usually played odd games called "back five," using just the 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 pins, and "cocked hat," which used only the 1, 7, and 10. In 1900, summer bowlers at the Diamond Alleys in Baltimore suggested it might be interesting to trim down the standard pins to match the size of the ball. Manager John Van Sant liked the idea. He had a wood turner do the job and many of his customers enjoyed the new bowling game. At first, the rules of ten-pin bowling were used. But, because it's much harder to get strikes and spares, one small rule change was made: A bowler is allowed to use three bowls on each turn. If all ten pins are knocked down with three balls, it simply counts a score of ten. Van Sant demonstrated the new sport to the owners of the alley, John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson. Though they're much better known as baseball managers, McGraw and Robinson were also avid duck hunters. When they saw the way the small pins flew wildly around the alley, one of them remarked that it looked liked a "flock of flying ducks."

Extractions: Kristal I'm afraid I can't answer your question very specifically. I would have to guess that ten pin bowling came to Canada right around the turn of the century. I do know this: The Temperance Street Bowling Club, which opened in 1905, was the first regulation-sized ten pin bowling alley in Toronto. And I can't imagine that there was very much bowling anywhere else in Canada before that, but I can't really document that idea. (The reason I know about the Temperance Club is that Thomas F. Ryan, who owned the alley, invented five-pin bowlingthere in 1909.) There are a couple of books that might help. Unfortunately, I don't have immediate access to them, but here they are: Canada Learns to Play: The Emergence of Organized Sport, 1807-1914

Extractions: Bowling Scoring by Brian Loughery Until you get the hang of it, bowling is perhaps one of the most difficult sports to keep accurate score for. When Kathy, Lida, Michael, and I went for our showdown in the alley, we were fortunate enough to have the burden of scoring lifted from us. Our savior was a man named Vernon, who was more then happy to sit there, keep score, give us tips, and give Michael the creeps. Therefor, we were able to concentrate on more important things, such as winning. During the first game, we all had our share of ups and downs. And after several gutter balls and very few strikes and spares, I emerged victorious. However, this was exactly the wrong thing to do. Lida, who had infintely more bowling practice than anyone else, decided that she would now actually start to bowl for real. She proceeded the thrash all of us quite thoroughly in the next two games. It really wasn't a pretty site. Next time, I think we will make Lida play with a handicap.

Extractions: Duckpin bowling little stubby pins + high velocity = fun by Chris Klimas I believe that duckpin bowling is the best sport ever invented. The thing about sports and I is that we don't spend much time together anymore. When I was in middle school, I played on the local rec soccer team, but after a couple years, I stopped liking it. I think it was because the game was becoming much more about winning than it was about playing. And when people want to get nasty about winning, as I guess nearly the rest of the world could tell us Americans, soccer can be a very nasty sport. I can understand that for athletes, sport is a kind of artform when they're playing their sport, they're more themselves than they are at any other time. For them, the moment of triumph is worth all of the hardship that preceded it. But I'm not an athlete. I'm not looking for a game to provide meaning to my life. When I win a game, I don't want to feel like I'm the king of the world, because that means that when I lose, I'll feel like an jester who just ran out of pies. I just want to have fun and feel fleeting sensations of motion and giddiness, and if possible, make fun of my friends along the way. That's why my engagement with sports before duckpin bowling generally involved a Frisbee, a
