The invention of the gun and the enclosure of common land led to its rapid decline, although enthusiasts have kept the sport alive in Britain. In recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of birds of prey in captivity and in the number of people who keep them, frequently more for free-flying or exhibition than for true falconry, the pursuit of quarry. The principal reason is the success of captive breeding, which has ensured that sought-after foreign species no longer have to be imported. Lanner and saker falcons, red-tailed buzzards and Harris hawks are among the most popular non-native birds that are bred in captivity in this country for falconry. As they have become more readily available so they have become less expensive. This also applies to native species like the peregrine falcon. It is the common objective of Government and responsible falconers to achieve sustainable captive-breeding to avoid the unnecessary use of wild birds. 2.9.1 Escaped birds

Extractions: Through history several Danish kings have practised the sport, though the trapping and distribution of gyrfalcons from Iceland and Norway have probably been of greater significance than the hunting itself. A Royal Falconry was established in the 16th century. It was abolished in the early 19th century, and since then falconry have been anonymous in Denmark. Not until the early 1970's a club maintaining the interests of falconry was established. It had a short and chaotic life, and ended it's days in the early 1990's being a club for different groups of people interested in raptors and owls. In 1991 the Danish Hawking Club was formed. The club only maintains the interests of falconry.

We also offer one day hunting experiences using Peregrine falcons and Peregrine Hybrids during the season( 1st October -1st February) Please note that all our birds fly free and most of them hunt, which is of course what they do in the wild. It is for this reason that we have a smaller amount of birds as they are highly motivated , getting plenty of exercise. It is also for this reason that we do not have a large collection of birds and exotic species such as Owls, Eagles and Vultures as these cannot be effectively used for proper falconry purposes.

Extractions: Although I spent most of my childhood in Norfolk, in the village of Stalham, near Hickling Broad (a favorite place for bird watching), I never had much interest in becoming a "twitcher". Then, when I moved from primary school, I found that my new school had four "Houses" - Bittern, Gannet, Grebe and Kestrel, (all native to the Norfolk Broads). I became a member of Kestrel House. This was the start of my interest in birds of prey! Here in Yorkshire, I have recently discovered a great centre for the conservation of these magnificent creatures. Set in dramatic limestone surroundings, the York- shire Dales Falconry and Conservation Centre is the first privately owned Falconry Centre in the North of England. The centre aims to educate and to raise public awareness to the threat of extinction many birds of prey now face. Hopefully, by successful captive breeding and educational programmes, these superb creatures will be saved for the benefit of future generations. There are many species of Birds of Prey from around the world at the Centre. When we last visited we saw Vultures, Eagles, Hawks, Falcons and Owls. A great deal of thought, time and effort has gone into the housing of the birds, trying to re-create their natural habitats. This involved the transportation of 350 tons of limestone boulders for cliff faced fronted aviaries resembling a cluster of famhouse buildings. For us, the biggest thrill was seeing "Andy" the Andean Condor laboriously take to the air. With a wingspan of 10 feet 6 inches he is one of the biggest birds in the world. Andy and his pal "Ringo" the Griffon Vulture are flown daily, weather conditions permiting. The Falcons contrast dramatically cutting through the air at speeds approaching 120mph, stooping to the lure to the fluttering silent flight of the beautiful Barn Owl. Audience participation is encouraged (our daughter, Mandy, was privileged to handle and fly a Falcon on our last visit).
