    Extractions: When most people think about fencing, they are reminded of swashbuckling movies such as "The Three Musketeers," "Robin Hood," "The Mark of Zorro," "The Buccaneer" or "The Princess Bride." In these movies, the hero fights by making broad sweeping motions with his sword and running about the stage or scene, and the winner is clear when one of the fighters is wounded or dies. But modern fencing is a sport with rapid, subtle movements and fast actions. Often the action in an engagement is over within seconds. Because the actions are so fast in competition, judges would have a tough time scoring the competitors' hits. So to make the scoring fair, most competitions use electric scoring machines to detect touches. Even though the weapons are not sharp, modern fencers must wear special equipment for protection and scoring. In this edition of How Stuff Works , we will examine the protective equipment as well as the electric scoring equipment used in modern fencing.

True deep cycles are never used for starting vehicles and thus have no cold cranking rating. A deep cycle battery should rarely, if ever, be discharged to less than 40 percent of full charge. To do so will damage the plates. So, a battery that is rated as 100 amp hours has only 60 usable amp hours. Sixty ampere hours is 60,000 milli-amperes. Most battery energizers will provide statistics regarding their draw per hour. It is usually given in milli-amperes. (Truly big ones use over 1,000 milli-amperes per hour).

Whichever is the case feel free to wander around, find out about fencing at Bath, some of the people who do it and what we get up to. The University Fencing Club has existed at Bath for more than ten years. It has always been a popular club, and at the start of this academic year we had around fifty members. We meet twice weekly to fence and the club owns a large amount of fencing equipment so you don't have to worry about buying your own. We also lend equipment out to trusted members, so that they can take part in open tournaments all over the country. The club participates in the national BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) tournaments, which gives us quite a full fixture list, involving travelling all over the country. One requirement not often mentioned about fencing, is the need to go out after a fence and to have a laugh with the rest of the club. This normally means dragging everyone up to the Plug bar for a swift one (although drinking isn't essential) sometimes followed by a night in the Venue night-club. There's also a range of social events, which are generally well attended.

Popular in Europe since its inception, the sport maintained a low profile in North America until the early part of this decade. With rising interest on this side of the Atlantic, the Excalibur Fencing Club is eager to lead the way in Canadian wheelchair fencing. Our goal is to see Excalibur athletes compete at the Year 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece. Novices, please visit the Excalibur "Learn to Fence" page for a brief overview of the sport. Unlike able-bodied fencing, wheelchair fencing is static : the fencers are fastened together by means of a metal frame (two versions of this frame, the French and the Italian, are used in competition; see lower left). Some unique features include: The fencer with the shortest arm decides whether the fight will be at his distance or that of his opponent, and the frame is adjusted accordingly.
