I go to Kicks and Sticks Martial Arts Studio where I am known by the nickname Captain Kidney. Picture Gallery Testing is a difficult time for everyone. The testing determines whether or not you are capable of advancing in rank. If you pass, then you receive your new rank at the next class after the belts and certificates arrive, if you don't, then you train for 6 months and try again. Testing occurs only twice a year, once in January and once in July. Testing is difficult and you can fail (although I've yet to see that happen to anyone). It is meant to put pressure on those taking the test because it shows how much knowledge you have under pressure as in real life situations.

It's no doubt that many of us have heard of Dan Inosanto , but to those who have just tuned in, here's a quick recap. Dan was one of Bruce Lee's close friends and student. Before meeting Bruce, Dan was in his own rights an accomplished martial artist. He studied Kenpo Karate under the late Ed Parker, Sr. For someone with such stature it would seem impossible for someone like Dan to learn under the tutelage of Bruce Lee. Bruce openly criticized the traditional arts - which made the masters of these arts furious. But not for Dan. Instead, Dan willingly gave up his "black belt" status and with an open-mind journeyed to a whole new way of learning the art of unarmed combat. He emptied his cup in order to taste another cup of tea. In February of 1967, Bruce Lee awarded him a third rank in jeet kune do (JKD), the level that Bruce considered necessary to teach JKD. To this day, Inosanto is the only individual to receive a third rank in JKD from Lee. The only man senior to Dan Inosanto is Taky Kimura, who is ranked 7th in JKD and who has personally ranked Dan rank 6 in JKD. Rank 8 is reserved forever for Bruce Lee as the founder of the art.

Howe Over the years, there have been many valiant attempts to link Asian fighting arts to modem spoils and/or forms of combat. Most of these can be charitably described as "reaches" or pure speculation. However, in one case, there is strong historical evidence that a Southeast Asian fighting system may have had a profound effect on Western boxing specifically the Filipino martial arts, known variously as kali escrima and arnis. Background Despite the aura of mysticism an "ancient" lineage gives a fighting art, Western boxing predates most Asian martial arts. Pugilism was practiced in a refined art form in ancient Greece several hundred years before the birth of Christ, whereas most classical Asian systems evolved after the birth of Christ. Many arts, such as karate, are products of the 20th century. Although there has been some speculation that the Greek arts were the origins of refined Asian combative principles, the stronger evidence suggests that India was their place of origin. Spreading northward into China across the Himalayas, the Indian miartial arts evolved into what we now know as chuan fa (fist way). At the same time, sailors, merchants, and traders carried their knowledge of fighting arts south, throughout the Mahajapayit empire, a vast chain of islands consisting of modern-day Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, and the Philippines. Western pugilism evolved in a similar fashion. The Greek culture had a profound influence on the Romans, who conquered the known world. Hand-to-hand fighting was regularly practiced by soldiers and gladiators, who required a knowledge of how to stay in combat when disarmed. This evolved into the sport of boxing.

Arnis, Eskrima (Escrima) and Kali are Filipino weapons arts which teach empty hand techniques based on weapons movements, but which also contain many, many other important aspects. The Filipino arts are highly effective against other systems and are not seen in tournaments because they are not designed for sport. Names of the arts may vary but they are all based on similar concepts. They are all designed to be effective and easily learned. Guro Dan Inosanto explains that "Kali" means "training the hands in motion".
