They are vehicles that are powered be humans, usually in the form of pedal power. This website focuses mainly on recumbent tricycles and their applications in racing. Basic Aerodynamics Generally, the bigger the object, the more wind resistance it encounters as it moves. The faster an object moves, the more wind resistance it encounters. Since in racing applications reducing wind resistance by slowing down isn't a viable option, in order to minimize wind resistance the object has to have as small a profile as possible, and be rounded and smooth so as to decrease air disruption, another form of air resistance. Tucking over the bars of a racing bike has this effect. So too does a recumbent riding position where the rider lies down on the cycle. Streamlining or fairing (placing a body around) the rider and machine helps to reduce the drag even more. 'Aero' components on a conventional bicycle cut drag by about 2% compared with a standard bike. A recumbent position is worth about 15-20%. A fully faired HPV (a recumbent trike with a fully enclosed body) has up to 65% less drag than a conventional bicycle. The air simply slips over it (shown above). Last Updated 16th November, 2002
